Why does a church — the Church — get a pass? If these pedophiles (and let's not get into an argument about the definition of pedophilia [italic]again[/italic]) worked for any other organization, they would be caught, tried, convicted and sentenced with speed and clarity, but because they're "men of the cloth" they have gotten away with, and continue to commit, heinous acts of violence, abuse, extortion, conspiracy and cruelty unimaginable. For decades, if not centuries.

The answer is very simple (as is the case with most complex issues; we just don't want to admit it): zero tolerance. As in, get caught once, go to prison. Get caught again, or if the circumstances were particularly egregious (multiple crimes, multiple victims, or repeated abuse) and it's either castration or death. And since we're talking about sick fucks here, those that chose castration would probably continue their criminal behavior, so it's get caught a third time and it's death. No. Questions. Asked.

Now, the tricky part is catching them and the possibility of extenuating circumstances, so the answer would, again, be very simple: every priest must wear a camera that is permanently on and recording. Getting caught not wearing a camera or somehow disabling the camera results in prison time. Even in the confessional (because, well, let's face it, half of the problem is that Catholics allow people to commit the most heinous acts imaginable and receive absolution through confession... and one giant opportunity for catching crooks is wasted). I don't care if this is prohibitive of religious freedom: religious freedom ends where a victim's body and well-being begin. And it's not like were talking about men who don't know their acts are illegal, immoral and contrary to every good thing on Earth. They know.

And finally, set a deadline: all acts of abuse and molestation must end immediately. Should another act occur, arrest the entire congregation as accessories to the crime, and hold the congregation responsible for allowing this abuse to continue (as in, average pew-sitters could possibly get time in prison and minimally placement on the sex offender registry for seeing and doing [italic]nothing[/italic] instead of doing the right thing and reporting this crime to the secular authorities). With this threat hanging over their heads, you'd have a whole slew of Catholics suddenly finding their conscience and reporting suspicions and doubts so that the authorities could investigate and clear the Church of this scourge. And I don't care that this could end up in a witch hunt-like atmosphere; we've put up with sexual abuse from Godly men for far, far too long, and seeing the pendulum swing in the direction of overzealous prosecution of priests is a price that [italic]they[/italic] will have to pay for not correcting this ongoing problem when they were given the chance, starting decades ago.

What should have happened is that church officials who knowingly hid the crimes by moving these pedos around to commit further crimes should have been charged as accomplices or some form of criminal facilitation.

Anyone else would have been charged with crimes if they had helped conceal such crimes and facilitated their continuation.

Why people haven't called for this is astounding and demonstrates the willingness of people to crimes committed by these people slide.

Where I live , 10 years ago the bishop was convicted of possessing child pornography. It was observed that he was taking an inordinate number of trips to Thailand, and when he got back from his last trip, his laptop was seized. It was found to contain numerous pictures of naked underage boys, some as young as 8. Several had rosaries around their necks. He was tried and convicted, and got a "whopping" 15 month sentence. The time he spent in detention before the trial was counted as part of his penalty, so in fact he served no time whatsoever. He made the public statement that he was glad he was caught. Suuuuure.

Of course he was glad, R18. Now, he's free to go molest again, knowing the worst that will happen is a slap on the wrist (and not by a nun because that would hurt!).

Every time a thread like this pops up, someone comes along and defends the Catholic church by saying it’s “only” a minority of priests, yadda yadda, and ignoring the fact that the church continues to shelter, defend, hide and protect these child rapers while claiming to be changing their ways and grooming more priests to continue to rape kids. It’s so fucking sick. I really judge all Catholics for continuing to promote this sick brand and to financially underwrite it.
