Who will play the royals for seasons 5 & 6 of "The Crown"?

Helen Mirren has said she will NOT play the queen for the fin al two seasons, although everyone would like her to do it. So who will play the queen, probably from ages @60 (in 1996) probably to age 78 in 2005, which will take us through the marriage of Charles and Camilla? I really don't think Peter Morgan, the showrunner, will let it go beyond that--he doesn't like actors playing too far beyond their age range. (There is practically no chance of him having Meghan as a character by the way, because he is unlikely to go to the present day, although I know the Meghan-obsessives and the Meghan-haters alike will not believe me.)

My bets are: Lindsay Duncan (who is now 69) as the Queen, and Jeremy irons (who is now 71) as Prince Philip.

They would also need someone to play Charles and Camilla from their early 40s to their early 60s. They will also need a middle-aged actress to play Anne, men in the 30s to play Andrew and Edward, a woman in her 30s to play Fergie.

The rumor is they will let Emma Corrin play Diana straight through season 5 as well as next season.

As for Charles and Camilla and Anne, here are a list of British actors currently in their 40s.

Lindsay Duncan is so willowy, and HM is....the opposite.

by Anonymousreply 14November 19, 2019 4:52 PM

Emma Thompson could be the queen, although she is only 609, and so Morgan might feel she would have a tough time playing the Queen at 80 believably.

Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother wore a fat suit this season, so a skinny actress playing Elizabeth II like Thompson or Duncan could too.

by Anonymousreply 15November 20, 2019 12:03 AM

*Sorry, I meant "60," not "609."

by Anonymousreply 16November 20, 2019 12:04 AM

Olivia Colman struggled with the voice. Not the accent but the voice.

Who will be the Americans? I want to see Ron and Nancy.

by Anonymousreply 20November 20, 2019 4:44 AM

Would it be heresy for them to hire an American or Australian actress as the queen? Meryl and Jessica are both the right age. And Judy Davis would knock it out of the park.

by Anonymousreply 21November 20, 2019 5:18 AM

Joanna Lumley as the Queen.

by Anonymousreply 22November 20, 2019 5:21 AM

I could reprise my Oscar-winning role as Thatcher, but Jessica? A histrionic Queen Mom on her deathbed? G could be a frumpy lady-in-waiting though.

I'm sick to fuckin death of playing her!

by Anonymousreply 24November 20, 2019 8:10 AM

How bout me for Queen Mother, I'm an old queen

by Anonymousreply 25November 20, 2019 8:11 AM

I hate Olivia Colman. Especially as The Queen. She has this pitiful painfully mournful look about her, she always looks sad and clinically depressed, very victim-mentality-like, The Queen doesn't look like that.

by Anonymousreply 26November 20, 2019 8:14 AM

Lizzo for Meghan

The gay kid from Curb Your Enthusiasm for George

Kevin Spacey for Andrew

Carrot Top for Harry

Two ficus trees for William and Kate

Andy Dick for Charles

The Queen as herself

by Anonymousreply 27November 20, 2019 8:21 AM

Patricia Routledge as The Queen Mother. Patricia Hodge as The Queen. Billy Nihy or Charles Dance as Prince Phillip. Joan Plowright would have made a good queen but is too old and blind. Helen Mirren could give a go at playing Camilla but Tracy Ullman was brilliant

by Anonymousreply 28November 20, 2019 8:22 AM

Me, Possums. I know her so well!

by Anonymousreply 29November 20, 2019 8:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 33November 20, 2019 8:36 AM

Judy Davis would be excellent as the elderly, embittered Princess Margaret. They should keep her in mind for Seasons 5 and 6.

by Anonymousreply 42November 20, 2019 11:01 PM

Have they cast Diana yet? I think Daisy Bevan ( Joely Richardson's daughter, Vanessa Redgrave's granddaughter) would be a good choice for young Lady Di:

by Anonymousreply 43November 20, 2019 11:17 PM

They've already cast Emma Corrin as Diana, since seasons 3 and 4 were filmed back-to-back. She'll be staying on in Season 5 to take Diana right through to the end, which makes sense as Diana died so young.

by Anonymousreply 44November 20, 2019 11:30 PM

I was thinking that it would be weird for her to appear with multiple actors playing Charles, but in season five she wouldn't really be with Charles.

by Anonymousreply 45November 20, 2019 11:43 PM

It probably helps that Charles was more than a decade older than Diana. Emma Corrin is 23, so she can reasonably play Diana as a teenager and in her 20s. Thirties might be more of a stretch, but that's what makeup is for.

by Anonymousreply 50November 21, 2019 1:30 AM

I would love to see Elie White, who is the cast standout as Princess Beatrice on "The Windsors," play Beatrice's mother Sarah Ferguson on "The Crown." She is very funny and is excellent at being boisterous, but I think she could also play pathos. Plus she looks like Fergie (or would if her hair were in that weird 80s do).

Oops! Sorry. Let's try again.

Judy Davis as Princess Margaret is a sensational idea, I'd love to see that.

A friend and I were talking about this and I came up with two ideas for Elizabeth in Seasons 5 and 6. One is obvious and the other not so much, but it'd be brilliant.

First would be Imelda Staunton. She's extremely famous right now, getting her pick of many big roles. She's a tad too working class, but I could see it. Small and round, so forth. About the right age.

Who is less obvious but who would be absolutely brilliant and would have a great comeback story would be ... Julie Christie. About the right age and of course too beautiful to play it, but I do think she'd be perfect. What a story that would be.

by Anonymousreply 53November 21, 2019 4:50 AM

Imelda Staunton lacks regality, as has Olivia Colman this season. They're both sort of coarse. Staunton is also very hammy, which can actually be a good thing, but not here.

The queen became rounder, but she was never quite squat and dumpy. She was always athletic. She also looked much better in the 1960s than does Colman.

Julie Christie is a very interesting idea.

by Anonymousreply 54November 21, 2019 1:48 PM

r50 Nance and Jenna both have those crazy piercing quality to their faces.

by Anonymousreply 55November 21, 2019 1:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 58November 21, 2019 10:07 PM

Nailed it!

by Anonymousreply 59November 21, 2019 10:18 PM

They should have kept Matt Smith, Claire Foy, and Vanessa Kirby for another season. If this season goes 1964-1976, Phillip, Elizabeth, and Margaret would be 42-54, 38-50, and 34-46, respectively. Smith, Foy, and Kirby are currently 37, 35, and 31. With some subtle aging makeup and costuming, they could easily have played their characters' range of ages for Season 3.

I've only seen the first episode, but so far the recasting is NOT working for me. I'll give it another few episodes and see, but I still think they made a huge mistake getting rid of the original cast so soon.

by Anonymousreply 60November 21, 2019 11:20 PM

I try to forget the sisters are still in their late 30s at the beginning of this season cause HBC and Olivia dont look near that young. But their ages are good for the second half and next season.

by Anonymousreply 61November 21, 2019 11:23 PM

Charlotte Rampling.

by Anonymousreply 62November 21, 2019 11:27 PM

Interesting ideas being bruited about, according to CNN:

*They suggest Emma Thompson as well as Staunton for the Queen--I was not aware of how much Thompson looks like the queen (although she's much taller)--and also Meryl Streep

*Jim Broadbent and Gary Oldman are the favorites right now at Ladbroke's to play Philip, with Jeremy irons and Charles Dance also on the short list--with Patriuck Stewart as an outside choice.

*Ladbrokes is betting on Ralph Fiennes as Charles, with Colin Firth second, and then Dominic West. (CNN suggests Hugh Laurie.)

They have many more suggestions at the link, including Michael Caine (who would be far too old) as John Major.

Charles Dance can't play Phillip, he's already played Mountbatten. Which is something of a shame, as I agree he'd have made a perfect older Phillip, and would have had more to do than he will as Mountbatten.
