Who will play the royals for seasons 5 & 6 of "The Crown"?
Helen Mirren has said she will NOT play the queen for the fin al two seasons, although everyone would like her to do it. So who will play the queen, probably from ages @60 (in 1996) probably to age 78 in 2005, which will take us through the marriage of Charles and Camilla? I really don't think Peter Morgan, the showrunner, will let it go beyond that--he doesn't like actors playing too far beyond their age range. (There is practically no chance of him having Meghan as a character by the way, because he is unlikely to go to the present day, although I know the Meghan-obsessives and the Meghan-haters alike will not believe me.)
My bets are: Lindsay Duncan (who is now 69) as the Queen, and Jeremy irons (who is now 71) as Prince Philip.
They would also need someone to play Charles and Camilla from their early 40s to their early 60s. They will also need a middle-aged actress to play Anne, men in the 30s to play Andrew and Edward, a woman in her 30s to play Fergie.
The rumor is they will let Emma Corrin play Diana straight through season 5 as well as next season.

We need to cast minor parts like sexy nanny Tiggy Legg-Bourke, Dodi Fayed, Dr Hasnat Khan and Paul Burrell.
As for Charles and Camilla and Anne, here are a list of British actors currently in their 40s.

Emma Thompson could be the queen, although she is only 609, and so Morgan might feel she would have a tough time playing the Queen at 80 believably.
Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother wore a fat suit this season, so a skinny actress playing Elizabeth II like Thompson or Duncan could too.

Patricia Routledge as The Queen Mother. Patricia Hodge as The Queen. Billy Nihy or Charles Dance as Prince Phillip. Joan Plowright would have made a good queen but is too old and blind. Helen Mirren could give a go at playing Camilla but Tracy Ullman was brilliant

They've already cast Emma Corrin as Diana, since seasons 3 and 4 were filmed back-to-back. She'll be staying on in Season 5 to take Diana right through to the end, which makes sense as Diana died so young.

I was thinking that it would be weird for her to appear with multiple actors playing Charles, but in season five she wouldn't really be with Charles.

It probably helps that Charles was more than a decade older than Diana. Emma Corrin is 23, so she can reasonably play Diana as a teenager and in her 20s. Thirties might be more of a stretch, but that's what makeup is for.

I would love to see Elie White, who is the cast standout as Princess Beatrice on "The Windsors," play Beatrice's mother Sarah Ferguson on "The Crown." She is very funny and is excellent at being boisterous, but I think she could also play pathos. Plus she looks like Fergie (or would if her hair were in that weird 80s do).

Judy Davis as Princess Margaret is a sensational idea, I'd love to see that.
A friend and I were talking about this and I came up with two ideas for Elizabeth in Seasons 5 and 6. One is obvious and the other not so much, but it'd be brilliant.
First would be Imelda Staunton. She's extremely famous right now, getting her pick of many big roles. She's a tad too working class, but I could see it. Small and round, so forth. About the right age.
Who is less obvious but who would be absolutely brilliant and would have a great comeback story would be ... Julie Christie. About the right age and of course too beautiful to play it, but I do think she'd be perfect. What a story that would be.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | November 21, 2019 4:50 AM

Imelda Staunton lacks regality, as has Olivia Colman this season. They're both sort of coarse. Staunton is also very hammy, which can actually be a good thing, but not here.
The queen became rounder, but she was never quite squat and dumpy. She was always athletic. She also looked much better in the 1960s than does Colman.
Julie Christie is a very interesting idea.

They should have kept Matt Smith, Claire Foy, and Vanessa Kirby for another season. If this season goes 1964-1976, Phillip, Elizabeth, and Margaret would be 42-54, 38-50, and 34-46, respectively. Smith, Foy, and Kirby are currently 37, 35, and 31. With some subtle aging makeup and costuming, they could easily have played their characters' range of ages for Season 3.
I've only seen the first episode, but so far the recasting is NOT working for me. I'll give it another few episodes and see, but I still think they made a huge mistake getting rid of the original cast so soon.

Interesting ideas being bruited about, according to CNN:
*They suggest Emma Thompson as well as Staunton for the Queen--I was not aware of how much Thompson looks like the queen (although she's much taller)--and also Meryl Streep
*Jim Broadbent and Gary Oldman are the favorites right now at Ladbroke's to play Philip, with Jeremy irons and Charles Dance also on the short list--with Patriuck Stewart as an outside choice.
*Ladbrokes is betting on Ralph Fiennes as Charles, with Colin Firth second, and then Dominic West. (CNN suggests Hugh Laurie.)
They have many more suggestions at the link, including Michael Caine (who would be far too old) as John Major.

Charles Dance can't play Phillip, he's already played Mountbatten. Which is something of a shame, as I agree he'd have made a perfect older Phillip, and would have had more to do than he will as Mountbatten.
