Did it used to be easier? Especially being gay, I imagine there is a yin-yang to it, that we’ve progressed as far gay rights etc., but now I feel like Social Media stops us. We’re all tethered to these people from high school and it feels infantilizing.

You can delete your Facebook account and survive, OP.
I did it earlier this year — after thinking I couldn't possibly because it's the locus of the modern world — and it was freeing. I don't regret it for a second.
You can also mute high school people on Twitter and "restrict" them on Instagram so they basically disappear from your feeds.
