What the fuck is ETSY?

And why?

It sounds really dumb. Like, Frau central.

by Anonymousreply 62June 21, 2020 4:03 PM

ETSY should have been named NELLIE.

by Anonymousreply 1November 12, 2019 9:37 PM

[quote]It sounds really dumb.

You would know.

by Anonymousreply 2November 12, 2019 9:39 PM

R2 is a Nellie ETSY Betsy.

TWAT!

by Anonymousreply 3November 12, 2019 9:41 PM

It's a place where fraus with all day to waste, can make ugly crafts at home, and sell them online, to buy their daily allotment of wine.

by Anonymousreply 4November 12, 2019 9:45 PM

It's like eBay for fraus.

by Anonymousreply 5November 12, 2019 9:54 PM

But what in the hell is SOLD on ETSY?

by Anonymousreply 6November 12, 2019 9:55 PM

Hurry only 1 left! ^^

R4 statement could be their stock market float tagline. It’s bang on.

by Anonymousreply 8November 12, 2019 10:03 PM

Gee OP. If only there were some way you could type etsy.com into your calcaputer machine and have it show it to you. All your questions would be answered. If only.

by Anonymousreply 9November 12, 2019 10:04 PM

They sell cheesy crafts and clothing items with phrases on them that say stupid shit like “Mama Needs Coffee” and “Mama’s Do It All.”

by Anonymousreply 10November 12, 2019 10:05 PM

It's like a shitty craft fair, except online.

by Anonymousreply 11November 12, 2019 11:03 PM

it's 5 crafters, 17 weirdos and the entirety of China selling junk. sometimes one of the first two will sell something interesting but you will never find out because, China. all of China.

by Anonymousreply 12November 12, 2019 11:07 PM

It should be renamed, SHITSY.

by Anonymousreply 13November 12, 2019 11:08 PM

I love Etsy for cute personalized gifts for my husband. I got great ones for our last two anniversaries from there. Inspired by my choices, my straight coworker now does the same for his wife. She of course loves them and I’m sure it helps him score his annual old fashioned.

Hop on board the train to Frautown, OP.

by Anonymousreply 14November 12, 2019 11:12 PM

Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods. It’s home to a universe of special, extraordinary items, from unique handcrafted pieces to vintage treasures

by Anonymousreply 15November 12, 2019 11:21 PM

Rofl R15.

Looks like ETSY marketing has entered the building!

by Anonymousreply 16November 12, 2019 11:25 PM

go over to etsy and look. There are some very professional people on there. They create everything from furniture to clothing to dishes to jewelry. Price range is $1 to $100,000 or higher.

by Anonymousreply 17November 12, 2019 11:31 PM

So what's the catch, R17?

These online market place sites start off with good intentions, but they always turn sour after a year or so.

Scammers, price riggers, etc.

I'm sure it's no longer some homey little website, where grandma can sell her wares. It's probably already tainted and corrupted.

by Anonymousreply 18November 12, 2019 11:35 PM

etsy has been around since 2005

by Anonymousreply 19November 12, 2019 11:47 PM

Agreed that it's heavily frau-skewed. However ...

I've purchased a few decks of playing cards there, some cufflinks made from coins, some cigarette cases that I've used to store card decks, and a very nice Kindle cover from Russia (thick gray fabric for shock absorption, button closure, pocket for pen and notepad, etc). I got it on sale for $30 including shipping.

by Anonymousreply 20November 13, 2019 12:08 AM

The catch is you have to sort through loads of crap to find the gems. I just bought some vintage ribbons for my Xmas pomanders, first things I've bought on Etsy for years.

by Anonymousreply 21November 13, 2019 12:15 AM

Etsy is mug cradler heaven.

by Anonymousreply 22November 13, 2019 12:23 AM

It looks like a 2nd grader made that thing at R7.

If that's the case, I'm going to get together some child labor and have them slave away, so I can sell their shit on ETSY.

I'll be rich!

by Anonymousreply 23November 13, 2019 12:27 AM

Way back when you could find some amazing treasures on there. I cant tell you the amount of sterling I scored dirt cheap. I once bought 24 pieces of british hallmarked silverware for $24 plus $5 shipping .She had it listed as silver plated.

by Anonymousreply 24November 13, 2019 12:27 AM

Wow, that's amazing R24.

Some people are just fucking lucky.

by Anonymousreply 25November 13, 2019 12:33 AM

It's been around for 15 years, OP. Can it be that much of a mystery?

It does have some overlap with eBay (it has a big focus on vintage furniture and items) but it also has a focus on things people make. In the best sense, that might be, say, a small sign/printed greeting cards, etc. where someone with talent creates something and sells it there.

But there was a site called Regretsy that was hysterical, and made fun of some of the dumb things that would show up on Etsy. Usually, it was either (a) something that someone made that was hideous, or (b) someone's attempt to, say, buy an IKEA item, change it in some way, pass it off as a newly created/made item, and charge out the ass for it.

I've used it a few times, most recently to buy some vintage Christmas ornaments and a few pieces of dinnerware someone had for sale that matched pieces from our set that broke. I think I also bought a few greeting cards there, where the artist changed the cover to read the names I wanted there. (Well, that was either Etsy or CafePress, not sure.)

by Anonymousreply 26November 13, 2019 12:40 AM

And yes, the Chinese resellers are all over the site.

The less unique the item is, the more an item might look like something on eBay or Amazon? The risk that it's a Chinese reseller or scammer exponentially increases.

by Anonymousreply 27November 13, 2019 12:42 AM

I thought the name might have been a typo (like 'cak' or 'Lens') and they just kept it.

by Anonymousreply 28November 13, 2019 12:56 AM

R15 is right. It's been around for about 20 years.

by Anonymousreply 29November 13, 2019 1:17 AM

OP has inspired me to resist the Christmas tree ornaments I make.

Sometimes I forget how out of touch some of the eldergay are here.

You could still get away with a thread like this and we could have fun some, maybe up to 5 years ago. Now it just looks silly.

by Anonymousreply 33November 13, 2019 2:33 AM

Hi OP

It's the year 2008

Please come back to us now! We miss you!

by Anonymousreply 34November 13, 2019 2:35 AM

They could have called it something more up-market, like Etsy Lauder.

by Anonymousreply 35November 13, 2019 2:39 AM

I know tons of gay men that sell their crafts on there.

by Anonymousreply 36November 13, 2019 2:43 AM

I've gotten some vintage and some beautifully handcrafted leather pieces. It's not all cutty-pasty frau crap. In many cases you pay the artist or the collector directly, and get a beautifully packaged item with a personal note. I like it.

And WW for R35.

by Anonymousreply 37November 13, 2019 2:54 AM

I've purchased many nice things there: semi-precious gemstones from India, Ukrainian Easter eggs, a Navajo vase, some expertly framed butterflies and moths, antique coins, vintage silver plate. I'm not really interested in crafts, per se. Also, some small, uncommon carnivorous plants.

by Anonymousreply 38November 13, 2019 3:00 AM

Always makes me think of Goatsy, even when I was an Etsy seller.

by Anonymousreply 39November 13, 2019 3:53 AM

The name is off putting and it's definitely frauland, but if you're looking for birthday presents for your mom or your sister (or even a man), you could do worse. Lots of handmade stuff that is often well made and sometimes very cheap for the quality depending on where in the world the seller is (it's international).

by Anonymousreply 40November 13, 2019 4:06 AM

It's a code for IOLA

by Anonymousreply 41November 13, 2019 4:08 AM

Can I take a dump in a bucket, and sell it on ETSY?

by Anonymousreply 42November 13, 2019 3:04 PM

[quote]I just bought some vintage ribbons for my Xmas pomanders

This is the gayest thing you'll read today.

by Anonymousreply 43November 13, 2019 4:10 PM

They sell a ton of jewelry.

The Beekman Boys are Goatsy.

by Anonymousreply 47November 13, 2019 6:00 PM

LOL r43!

by Anonymousreply 48November 13, 2019 6:01 PM

I just saw the Beekman Boys on one of those home shopping channels and they were wearing felt goats' ears, so yes, they were Goatsy.

by Anonymousreply 49November 13, 2019 6:02 PM

Goatsé . . . . . . . . . .

Leave Those Kids Alone.

by Anonymousreply 50November 13, 2019 7:47 PM

Are the Beekman Boys gay ?

😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

by Anonymousreply 51November 13, 2019 7:49 PM

Although it's only vaguely on topic, I wonder if anyone has kept up with news of Crazy Davey Blackburn's pal ETSY Nanny. Is she still lying for the lord, or has she moved on?

by Anonymousreply 52November 13, 2019 8:26 PM

It's decent, with a lot of interesting things. Ebay used to be decent 20-25 years ago and it's all crap anymore. Etsy used to be more unique 20 years ago, but it's already starting to go downhill a bit. I used to find some nice handmade jewelry on there at reasonable prices. Now the Chinese assembly line makers are hawking their wares. The owners are really marketing heavily so the more they can entice sellers the better and they don't care about it's image as a niche space.

by Anonymousreply 53June 20, 2020 2:42 AM

It's the place were you can buy real haunted items! Yes, that count as craft

It is Iola Boylen's dream come true.

by Anonymousreply 56June 20, 2020 3:42 AM

I’d like to find unique items on there. I bought my partner this money clip on Etsy. It’s not this exact one and I paid like 25 bucks for it. He gets so many compliments on it.

Don't be so transparent. You didn't "FIND" this, this is YOUR site and you're trying to promote it.

by Anonymousreply 58June 20, 2020 1:08 PM

R58 that’s not true. I go onto Etsy all the time to find unique gifts. Or gifts for me!

by Anonymousreply 59June 20, 2020 4:58 PM

I love Etsy! I found a really nice short elastic felt scarf last fall and it was just what I was looking for. Very comfortable to.

by Anonymousreply 60June 21, 2020 3:06 PM

I knew a black girl named Etsy

by Anonymousreply 61June 21, 2020 3:58 PM

Was she a crafting frau R61?
