OP, remember, addicts switch addictions. I went from barely ever drinking, yet doing lines, & smoking weed, to no drugs at all whatsoever, yet drank like a fish before I got sober. Booze is still the biggest offender. Does the job well, & is acceptable in public/social scenes, & no one accuses you of being a coke fiend or a junkie.

Sometimes the line between drug use and mental illness is hard to draw, because mentally ill people tend to self-medicate with all kinds of substances. And some mental illnesses get triggered by drug use - psychedelics can change your brain structure permanently and can trigger schizophrenia, just like "harmless" weed, if you have a disposition (and you never know if you have one, unless it gets triggered).

I've once read that scientists have difficulty doing large studies on the prevalence of schizophrenia in Western countries, because nearly all test subjects were exposed to cannabis at some point. They usually take these studies to East Asian countries, because cannabis is far less common there, and it's the only way to get "untainted" data. However the problem is that schizophrenia prevalence in East Asia might be (genetically) quite different from those with European heritage, so all these stats are hard to work with.
