Grey's Actor Jake Borelli to Lead Gay-Themed Valentine's Movie at Freeform

Freeform on Monday greenlit its first-ever Valentine’s Day movie — and with no disrespect to Sally, this romantic comedy is all about Harry.

Titled The Thing About Harry, the gay-themed original film will center on high school enemies Sam (played by Grey’s Anatomy‘s Jake Borelli) and Harry (newcomer Niko Terho), who are forced to share a car ride to their Missouri hometown for a friend’s engagement party on Valentine’s Day. But when Sam learns Harry has come out, things take a turn, and the two men “begin to develop a deep friendship — with neither admitting a potential romance may be brewing — leaving them wondering if one road trip could change the rest of their lives,” the project’s logline reads.

Borelli’s Sam is described as a “handsome, funny, neurotic, intelligent gay man” who has both “a scathing wit” and “an overly idealistic worldview.” Sam came out when he was still in high school, for which he was constantly bullied in his small Missouri town. Terho’s Harry, meanwhile, is an “emotionally uncomplicated, promiscuous player” who secretly “yearns for love, family and stability,” even though commitment terrifies him.

Queer Eye‘s Karamo Brown will co-star as Paul, a gay man who is both “exceedingly well put-together” yet “overbearing and pretentious,” while GLOW‘s Britt Baron will play Stasia, Sam’s edgy and opinionated best friend. Peter Paige (The Fosters) will direct the movie and appear as Sam’s warm-hearted roommate, Casey.

“It’s been an honor to partner with Freeform in making great television with LGBTQ+ characters as leads,” executive producers Paige, Greg Gugliotta and F.J. Denny said in a statement. “True equality can only be achieved when you see yourself reflected in the movies, music and stories that paint our culture. As young gay men in the 90s, whenever a rom-com opened, we would watch the leading lady fall in love, and imagine what it would be like if the boy was saying all those things to another boy. We’ve always wanted to make a movie — an unabashedly romantic comedy — that queer boys wouldn’t have to translate. It’s rewarding to take the genre to a new, all-inclusive level.”

The Thing About Harry is, fittingly, slated for a February 2020 premiere on Freeform.

Is it worse to be the sexless best friend, the serial killer, or the Hallmark holiday movie damsel?

At least, we can assume that they won't find love only to have one of them die of AIDS, a gay bashing, or OD.

by Anonymousreply 1November 12, 2019 2:12 AM

Well, I'll watch it.

This is Niko Tero:

I have no idea who either of these guys are, but the on in OP's picture has a great smile.

Why would Borelli's character have a 50 year old roommate, Mr. Paige?

They made sure to cast an actor who was actually gay as the lead, I give them credit for that. It's often not the case for these movies.

Such a cute movie. Predictable as hell but loved it. Was surprised about all the time jumps though, especially at the end.

For anyone who didn't watch it, it should be up on Hulu by tomorrow but it's also up on Freeform's site (with cable provider)

[quote] Queer Eye‘s Karamo Brown will co-star as Paul, a gay man who is both “exceedingly well put-together”

Hilarious. By “well put-together” they mean dressed, not his body. I just saw the movie, it was actually pretty good. (and Karamo was just a 1 minute cameo).

by Anonymousreply 29February 16, 2020 6:27 AM

I'm actually glad Karamo only had a short scene. I actually laughed out loud when they said that he was dating Sam. Luckily they broke up pretty quickly.

by Anonymousreply 30February 16, 2020 6:29 AM

Funny.

by Anonymousreply 31February 16, 2020 9:21 AM

Nah, I'm good.

by Anonymousreply 32February 16, 2020 9:59 AM

It’s great

by Anonymousreply 33February 16, 2020 5:34 PM

Watching it now

by Anonymousreply 34February 18, 2020 4:08 PM

He's cute but I have to admit I'm not very interested unless there's nudity. I might check it out, but my expectations are very low. How kitschy is it, on a scale of Lifetime to Hallmark?

by Anonymousreply 35February 18, 2020 5:18 PM

Nudity? Uh no dude. This is not porn

by Anonymousreply 36February 18, 2020 5:22 PM

The fact that Karamo was asked to do this already tells you the quality of the production.

by Anonymousreply 37February 18, 2020 11:43 PM

It was okay. The ending was cliched

by Anonymousreply 38February 19, 2020 12:45 AM

I thought it was cute, Niko has a great smile, it wasn't any sappier than the average fare on Hallmark.

by Anonymousreply 39February 19, 2020 2:03 AM

I’m into Niko

by Anonymousreply 40February 19, 2020 2:05 AM

so Peter Paige played Jake's roommate?

that's like 41 year old Amy Poehler playing surrogate baby mama for Tina Fey's character

by Anonymousreply 41February 19, 2020 2:10 AM

I'm kind of glad that there are basically no gay rom-coms outside of this and that shitty movie Love, Simon (based on a book written by a straight woman with a fan base of nothing but fag hags, of course). It's very reflective of who we are as a community, but in a good way. It shows that we're above all this kitschy, saccharine schlock.

by Anonymousreply 42February 19, 2020 2:55 AM

I read that Niko is gay, too.

by Anonymousreply 43February 19, 2020 5:23 AM

Not much is known about Niko since he's an unknown in Hollywood. This was his first acting job.

by Anonymousreply 44February 19, 2020 5:33 AM

Karamo...stick to reality TV

by Anonymousreply 45February 20, 2020 7:58 PM

[quote]so Peter Paige played Jake's roommate?

I’m surprised he only played the roommate and not the love interest. He produced it so he should have cast himself as Harry.

by Anonymousreply 46February 20, 2020 8:19 PM

I just watched Grey's and the hot Asian doctor who initially thought Glasses wasn't gay enough or out enough for him just said his parents don't know HE's gay.

Man, they run out of stories FAST.

by Anonymousreply 47February 21, 2020 2:25 AM

Didn't Nico make a big deal about how Levi wasn't open and out with his mom?

by Anonymousreply 48February 21, 2020 2:26 AM

Yes; he's hot so he'll be forgiven.

I guess we've come a long way. When I was a young young gayling we only had Steven Carrington -- and he kept sleeping with Claudia and Sammy Jo.

by Anonymousreply 49February 21, 2020 2:28 AM

Just watched it tonight, pretty sweet although Sam's prickish behavior about 3/4 of the way in was a little unpleasant. Very nice final scene.

It's streaming on Hulu, no subscription to freeform necessary.

by Anonymousreply 50February 22, 2020 5:37 AM

Still all smiles a week later

To be fair, the ending was just as ridiculous as every straight romcom, so there's that.

by Anonymousreply 54February 24, 2020 12:37 AM

One day they’ll start making good tv gay rom coms. Today isn’t the day.

by Anonymousreply 55February 24, 2020 1:37 AM

Fodder for morons....I would be EMBARRASSED to watch this with a straight male friend. The end scene with the baby was too laugh out loud ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 56February 24, 2020 1:51 AM

It’s “When Harry Met Sally” if BIlly Crystal had slept with Carrie Fisher in the third act.

I enjoyed it enough. Two attractive leads - neither of whom were generic looking - and they actually had great chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 57February 24, 2020 1:56 AM

I liked it too

by Anonymousreply 58February 24, 2020 2:01 AM

Judging by the massive outpouring of social media love for it and the ratings, I think Freeform is going to be doing a lot more inclusive movies. They're still tweeting about the movie.

by Anonymousreply 59February 24, 2020 2:32 AM

They're still tweeting because it just moved from Freeform subscription needed on Hulu, to no subscription needed...

by Anonymousreply 60February 24, 2020 4:23 AM

It's a successful and cute romcom. I mean it isn't trying to reinvent any cinematic wheels, but it is a well executed gay version of the genre. Happy it was made. Though it could have cut before the final scene of them with a baby, that felt unnecessary.

by Anonymousreply 61February 27, 2020 2:45 AM

[Quote]I would be EMBARRASSED to watch this with a straight male friend.

Man, you don't come across as desperate for validation from straight guys at all r56.

Anyway, it is a romcom. Duh. What exactly do you expect?

by Anonymousreply 62February 27, 2020 2:55 AM

This is the first time I’ve seen Jake Borelli in anything and I’ll admit I am smitten. Niko Terho was great too. They kept me interested until the end.

by Anonymousreply 63March 1, 2020 1:13 AM

You should watch season 15 and 16 of Grey's Anatomy R63

by Anonymousreply 64March 1, 2020 1:19 AM

i don't know anythijng about Harry's thing, but "Harry" is one hot man!

by Anonymousreply 65March 1, 2020 6:56 PM

Jake may likely stay on Grey's for the run of the series, which could be for years and years.

He'll land another series after that; first, if he's young enough, as a gay Mary Richards type character on a sitcom.

Then he'll do a streaming series as a lead.

THEN, he'll come back to broadcast as the gay best friend.

by Anonymousreply 66March 2, 2020 4:49 AM

Thanks r64. I am currently fast forwarding episodes of S15 on Netflix. The show itself is awful, but Jake is adorable.

by Anonymousreply 67March 2, 2020 5:17 AM

I just watched it. Total fantasy and predictable as hell but I really, really enjoyed it, every minute of it. The two leads were adorable.

by Anonymousreply 68March 8, 2020 2:30 AM

This movie is the wet dream of fem Dataloungers who scorn masculinity on here while chasing masculine gay/bi dudes who would never date them in real life. It figures it was written by a real Datalounger who even wrote himself as an unbelievable roommate of a 20something college kid.

Love Simon is a very good teen gay flick that has more going on than this trite. Of course you hate it, because unlike this shit fest, the protagonist isn't a walking gay stereotype. This film would feel more legitimate if it were about two masculine guys falling in love or even two fems falling in love. This is the gay version of every Judd Apatow show where inept annoying geeks get the hot girl. Truly embarrassing.

Why must all these gay films have stereotypical effeminate annoying leads? Let's not forget the oversexualized fag hag who never shuts up. My God this shit feels like it was written in 1992. At least Love Simon was paying tribute to John Hughes and trying to make a gay version of his films.

by Anonymousreply 69March 8, 2020 2:42 AM

I was attracted more to the “effeminate annoying lead” in this one.

Actually I didn’t find him effeminate or annoying. Jake Borelli is adorable!

by Anonymousreply 70March 8, 2020 3:30 AM

[Quote]Why must all these gay films have stereotypical effeminate annoying leads?

When you literally spent half your post talking a movie, Love Simom, that didn't have an effeminate lead....

Going through recent gay movies you have Simom, Gods Own Country, Call Me By Your Name, Beach Rats, Moonlight. Yes, it seems like it is just impossible to find a gay movie that doesn't have an effeminate lead!

[Quote]This is the gay version of every Judd Apatow show where inept annoying geeks get the hot girl.

So it's a romcom, and it follows the standard tropes of the genre?

by Anonymousreply 71March 8, 2020 3:30 AM

That's not allowed r70, you have to be very triggered by anyone that reads as gay. R69 demands it.

by Anonymousreply 72March 8, 2020 3:41 AM

The annoying lead is a gay Woody Allen. He whines, complains, whines some more and acts like an insecure 12 year old girl. Do you find this attractive? To each his own.

by Anonymousreply 73March 8, 2020 3:44 AM

You're projecting R73

by Anonymousreply 74March 8, 2020 3:56 AM

100 percent, r73.
