I'm convinced Frau Garner is making his recovery impossible. She is forcing him to attend church, and who knows what other quackery she subjects him to.

He’s too old for this bullshit. His kids are old enough to know what’s going on and it’s probably very embarrassing for them. He needs to start taking recovery more seriously. Every time he goes to rehab it’s always those luxury places where he can come and go as he pleases, which obviously isn’t helping him.

Yeah AA and religion are so damaging to addicts. All this bullshit about defects of character. Like addicts don't loathe themselves already. It is the last thing we need. He seems really depressed and unhappy with himself. He needs to get honest, get therapy and start to heal. AA does not do this.

Agree, OP. Slow suicide, by bottle.
People who drink to excess are miserable. I had thought his misery was because he was forced to be a father and had Garner stuck to him like a barnacle, when he did everything he could to rid himself of them all, but become a family annihilator. I was wrong. The misery he's trying to drink away lies inside him, no matter which new puss he's buried in or role he's taken.
Not sure which will give out first, his heart or liver but neither will last too terribly long.

It is not his ex-wife's responsibility to "get him sober".
She has no actual responsibility for him at all, and he's lucky she's even involved to the extent she is.
So all of you need to stop making this out like it is somehow Jennifer Garner's fault that he keeps relapsing. He needs to take responsibility for his own problems, get appropriate treatment, and work harder at it than he has in the past.

What are you girls even quarrelling about? Like most things in life, addiction falls under the biopsychosocio model. Our biology makes us predisposed. Then our psychological traumas start to press those biological buttons. And finally our social environment pulls the lever. That's why if you can intervene in just one of the three categories, you have a really good shot.

He's been told for the last 25 years that he's a god and will get chance after chance.
Look at his reaction today. He was taped being fall-down drunk with some little girl who had to be half his age, but is he ashamed? No, he's brushing it off as a slip and holding court with the paps. The Datalounger habit of blaming everything on women as though men have no free will is so tiresome! Affleck is rich and privileged and has access to all kinds of help and no one is stopping him from using his resources to get help. Why do you think he's a big baby who can't be responsible for himself? That's stupid.

Yeah, I dont think Garner is a doormat Even this morning, you can bet Garner summoned and he mainlined that coffee and came running. Or like the time he got his ass into her back seat and headed to rehab in the most humiliating circumstances. I guarantee hes been nursing hangovers at some of those farmers market and church outings, but had to suck it up. Shes clearly the most powerful person on his life. She may be the only person with any power whatsoever in his life.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | October 28, 2019 5:48 AM |
For all her "help" he hasn't improved one iota. He's right back to where he started. Nothing she's done has helped him whatsoever and last night was proof of it. She's his second mother and at 47 years old, that's pathetic.
The paps were laughing at him in that TMZ video. That's how far he's fallen.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | October 28, 2019 6:19 AM |
Doing a photo op with the kids the morning after he falls off the wagon is not savvy, it's pathetic. Everyone knows exactly what's going on, and they're fooling only themselves by thinking that it's working. They've done it too many times.
He's supposed to be filming his new movie in Louisiana in November. I am willing to bet it will either be pushed back or he'll be fired (but be allowed to say that he dropped out). He's a total joke. Jen Garner pretending that everything is great while carving pumpkins for the photographers she called is the reason the situation repeats itself and never changes.

No. His continuing to drink is the reason the situation repeats itself and never changes.
He alone is responsible for his own alcoholism. Not her, not the kids, not his parents, not Jennifer Lopez. He alone.

Shes right to try and limit the public fall out. A press hate frenzy harms her kids. Even if this is a full on spiral, her kids don't need to see that shit play out in the full public glare. It's bad enough that they're living it behind closed doors.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | October 28, 2019 6:49 AM |
She’s an enabler! She would have every right to get primary physical custody & child support, plus supervised visits for Ben Affleck. All this St. Jennifer stuff is baffling. What was the sense of getting a divorce if she’s still embroiled in his drama. She’s a doormat, setting a bad example for the kids. Should have had one child with him, maximum.

He's a wealthy powerful man in an industry that doesn't care so long as you make money. There's no "rock bottom" for that guy. Cutting him off is bullshit unless she wants Charlie Sheen 2.0. Charlie is still searching for his rock bottom FYI. Garners influence is the only reason he's been to rehab in the first place..

He went through the motions of rehab. Spent most of his time working out and eating at home. Clearly didn't take it seriously.
Now he's out celebrating a year of sobriety with a half dozen drinks, a few lines of blow and a hot babe young half his age. Yes, Garner has really and truly saved him.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | October 28, 2019 7:25 AM |
I checked out the video. All I have to say is that the queens on DL are so fucking hysterical and beyond dramatic.
Good God. I thought I was really about to see something horrifyingly batshit crazy from him. I'm thinking he had completely lost his damn balance and that he was going to be crawling around on the ground in the damn streets drunk.
The man just barely lost his balance and fell back a little and had to hold on to the SUV so he didn't completely fall to the ground.
You bitches are worse than the damn media. You overblow everything. There was only 94k views of the video when I looked. I was expecting at least 4 million views or more. Everyone in the comment section dont even think it's much of a big deal. Except here on DL.
You queens are so fucking dramatic.
Damn.
I viewed the video on YouTube by the way.

R155 - yes, he alone is responsible for his actions, but her covering up for him is on her. When people divorce it usually means going their separate ways living their lives apart. She's doing more harm to her kids by having a perpetually hungover father around. I don't think she covers for him for her kids, she has other reasons. I don't know why she bothered to divorce him.

Any adult who doesn't know that the self loathing that comes with public humiliation is more likely to imprison you than motivate you, lacks sense. It's hard enough coming back from failing sobriety, imagine failing before the entire globe. The less that plays out in public, the easier it will be to prevent a shame based spiral.
Be glad your struggles are not other peoples morning entertainment.

Still for R167. But yeah, it's funny how they can't decide what's the "correct conduct" from the wife. Angelina Jolie is a spiteful monster for airing Brad out. PSHs wife is a killer for cutting him out despite the fact that she never aired him out. Jennifer is a doormat for neither airing nor cutting Ben out. And if course RDJs wife should have no credit on his turn around which begs the question why they're so obsessed about the wives in the first place.

Yeah, unfortunate that he looked burned out after the BvS reception, on top of the problems in his personal life. He was imo the best part in BvS. Played the role super well.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | October 28, 2019 1:21 PM |
BvS and dealing with WBDC caused whatever issues he was struggling with to worsen, IMO. How many years had it been, before he got that role, that he was seen to be a mess in public? Then, afterwards, he was rarely not a stained-shirt, sweaty, hungover trainwreck. He was even showing up for premiers coked up, with his fly unzipped and covered in blow (Suicide Squad premier).
He never recovered from being Batman.
by Anonymous | reply 173 | October 28, 2019 1:30 PM |
The spiral started before Batman, IMO. It was Gone Girl. I remember him and Fincher joking that he went Method for that role, which I interpreted as, he got wasted a lot and fucked Emily Rataj-whatever her name is.

He went and did that controversial Ibogaine treatment in Northern England about 8 years ago and hasn’t had a craving since. He even had a glass of wine last year with no desire for more. He said that it was so dramatic and purging that he feels that it totally requires his brain chemistry. Wonder if there’s any truth to it.

I would guess a spiral somewhere around 2013 which is the year he won the Oscar, was announced as Batman and filmed Gone Girl. Same year he kept being spotted at casinos and random States by himself. Affleck is just the worst self sabotager. Give him success and he will try wreck it.
There does seem to have been a clean period end 2014 and early 2015 during the training for and shooting BvS. Of course once it's in the can, Benny boy celebrates by fucking the fame whore nanny. Self sabotage is real.

by Anonymous | reply 182 | October 28, 2019 4:22 PM |
Every actor who played Batman brought a degree of tragedy to the role, but Ben Affleck takes the idea of Bruce Wayne. like a tortured soul to the next level. His Batman is not someone you would like to be friends with; he is angry, paranoid, lies to his lover, and seems to have at least some degree of joy in harming criminals. Although This doesn't exactly describe someone you would invite to dinner, it gets to the heart of what Batman is as a character. More than any other man to assume the role of The Dark Knight, Ben Affleck communicates the sadness, the guilt and pain this character carries with him from the moment his parents died in that alley of Gotham.

I know many guys straight guys like Ben, they let fraus like Jennifer who likens herself to be better than Martha Stewart run their lives. She orders him around, tells him what to do, where to go etc, she's perfect mother/wife material...someone who just wants to stay home, raise kids and cook. He's happy for a while...but he wants his cake and eat it too because he's a fucking star!
He soon gets bored of the goody wife esp after so many kids, her vag is like the grand canyon..how can you expect his normal sized cock to climax in that? I think she would have stayed with him if he was "manageable"...but he gambles too much so she divorced him to get the money in case he gambles/pisses it all away.

They check how successful you are, how much press you get, how many Raya followers you have and you have to be invited by Raya members. That said, I've heard the Raya administrators sometimes head hunt members newly single celebs and socialites. I bet that's how Ben got it. Good looking guy had the window seat, asked if I wanted to change and I declined. Flight attendants fawned all over him, I had work stuff to do, so ignored him. His suit though? Gorgeous. Easily $5K.
He was a very polite guy. No matter how many times those attendants hovered and offered him something he was well mannered. At the end, he asked if I minded if he get out before me as he was meeting someone at the gate. Of course I said yes.
I waited for my team who were flying in coach. I guess au was the buzz as I was sitting next to Ben Affleck and had no idea. Just that his suit was gorgeous, and he had impeccable manners.

R41, alcoholism hadn’t anything to do with not valuing yourself, your life, or not recognizing your strength.
Everyone drinks for different reasons, however the usual common denominator is a dysfunctional childhood. But I’ve met people who say that they hadn’t been exposed to dysfunction, but nevertheless, developed alcoholism.
Ben strikes me as an intelligent person. Above average in intelligence, as a matter of fact.
Lots of times, highly intelligent people end up facing a sort of existential crisis. The reason that happens is that smart people usually figure shit out, earlier than most. They start looking around, and realize that we live in a truly fucked up world. They recognize that no matter how much farther we move along, there are people who will insist on pulling others down, or backwards. Wars, wars caused by ridiculous religions, racism, poverty, etc.
Once they see that the fix is in, and they are intelligent enough to see all possible outcomes, they begin to ask themselves shit like: what the fuck is all of this for? It doesn’t make much of a difference, and nothing and everything matters, all at once.
Now imagine realizing this sort of thing at 23-25 years of age, and simultaneously coming into mega money, fame, success, in not just any industry, but in the entertainment industry, specifically the film industry, where image is EVERYTHING.
Go a bit further, and imagine all of this taking place, along with what is either the beginning of addiction, or full blown addiction.
The bottom line is that for whatever reasons, combined, or singular, smart people often party hard, and they do it to shut off their thinking. It allows them to let go and have fun. They do it because it works immediately, and they are looking for immediate relief.

Turns out he's supposed to start filming next week. Hence the quick turn around from the drunk to the sober photos. It's a race to calm down the studio and avoid being fired before shooting begins. Which is fine to me. Doesn't matter why you stop fucking around as long as you stop it

He is a bipolar mess - textbook. He needs a psychiatrist and meds to stop the relapses, gambling, etc.
Odd how he can keep counting cards even when falling off his chair. We all have our skills and priorities, I suppose.

I suspect Ben’s been drinking for a while now. The Saturday night thing with TMZ was just the first time we saw it.
Booze and opiates are the most difficult things to quit. I’ve never touched opiates, other than when I was prescribed Vicodin for post surgery. The doctor prescribed enough pills for a week. I took them for 3 days. They made me very nauseous. Recently, I sustained an injury at work, & got Ultram. They prescribed 5 of those. I found Aleve to work better than the Ultram.
Now, booze? That was a bitch to quit. When I started drinking, I did so after having long term sobriety. I attempted to quit repeatedly, many times. It took going into treatment for me to quit. I would get the tremors, the whole nine yards. The physical addiction was intense. I couldn’t stop, no matter how hard I tried. My AA friends pulled an intervention on me, and drove me straight to rehab the following morning. The rehab had it’s own medical/detox unit, and I was in such bad shape, they basically knocked me out for a week in order to detox me. Then I spent an additional 30 days there. I’d never been to rehab before, but it saved my life.
Some people knock rehabs. They say it’s a crutch, and for many, it is a crutch. It’s also a place where people go in order to make their spouses and kids happy. After I got out, I was the only one that remained sober, and I thank my AA peeps for that, because they stuck by me like white on rice in order to help me get through the first 90 days post rehab.
For hardcore boozers, medical detoxes are oftentimes necessary. I had no idea that you can die if not detoxed under medical supervision. It turns out that you can.
I know that not everyone has access to these places. Rehabs with medical detox units are VERY expensive without insurance. Ben definitely has insurance, and can check in whenever he needs to. But if he gets back to where he was before his last rehab stay, he will most likely need to do that.
Most alcoholics die of organ failure, but plenty of them die from taking nasty falls. One guy I knew died after hitting his head on the edge of a table. He was so drunk, he couldn’t get up, and hadn’t any clue that he was bleeding out. Another girl I knew accidentally overdosed by drinking and taking pills she had forgotten she already took, due to being drunk. She was found with multiple prescriptions all over her house, with her kids running around, screaming.
I’ve known young people who had undiagnosed heart problems, and die from doing blow. And I’ve met or have been close to plenty of people who figured they could tell everyone they were sober, and were found with needles hanging from their arms or hands.
Addiction is a bitch. You really never, ever know if you’ve beat it. I don’t care how you get sober, how long you stay sober, etc. Once you’ve developed alcoholism and/or addiction, there are no guarantees. I’ve known people with decades of sobriety relapse, or blow their heads off. And now, with the opiate crisis, people are dropping like flies.
All you can do is keep on trying. Find something that works for you. Understand that what works for you today, may no longer work for you in 5 years. Become self aware enough to recognize your triggers, so that you can hedge against relapse.
I hope this guy doesn’t drop dead from this. My heart goes out to him, because I get it.

[quote]They prescribed 5 of those. I found Aleve to work better than the Ultram.
That's because the guy at the pharmacy, stole your actual Ultram and gave you probably Tylenol in its place. You got ripped off and he got high

My criticism with Garner is that she parades those kids around.
It feels as though she’s working out her own issues, and I have some sympathy for her. I wonder if she had an alcoholic parent.
I wish I could tell her that she cannot save him. She can’t.

R229 is something I agree with. There are people who will become physically addicted - like R236. There are people who feel life is suffering - and why not escape that every once in a while. Not sure which one Ben is. But the occasional binge by itself is overhyped. The issue - is this every day. Plenty of normal Joes do this every weekend. Not good - but the sober or nothing thing may not be his answer. Agree with poster above who mentioned SMART.

fuck that, I'm reopening it. I'm busy enough during the days with my dog and foster kitties etc etc. that it takes awhile reading thru a thread, but there are some misconceptions about alcoholism and sobriety--which i blame no one for, this being a country that relies heavily on people remaining uninformed and ignorant--that need to be cleared up, and i think i can shed some light on the problem, too. I sobered up in AA without benefit of treatment in 1984. The fact that I eventually drifted away in 2010 and have been an off-and-on again drunk since then is not lost on me, since i know what i'm headed for if i keep drinking much longer, and what will happen to anyone if they do likewise. But i sobered thru AA w/o treatment because i'd been thru extensive rigorous treatment at least four times in the preceding 3 years, and it wasnt sobering me up. I got to AA, did a 90/90 (90 meetings in 90 days) and joined the catholic church because of frequent trips to a monastery just north of here, and i stayed as stuck to all that as i could afford to for a long, long time. What killed me eventually was the nature of AA in this college town, the relatively few old-timers, and large numbers of students cycling thru every three or four years, who were always running everything, and taking up most of everybody else's time with their constant, ego-driven horseshit. like any newcomers or youngster. And I got old, and infirm, and didn't particularly care what happened next, what with heart disease and atrial fib a constant reality, and my declining sex drive, and sex appeal. I just lost faith. the catholics also became increasingly repugnant to me with politicking from the pulpit, re abortion rights and a number of really white-people-centered concerns. it is really farm country after all. Also a couple of oldtimers meetings i loved went south because most of the old timers died off. Now, Ben isn't going to sober up, perhaps because he can't. Perhaps he has a screaming harassing voice inside his head haunting him every single day, stealing all his joy and keeping him in pain. Perhaps he feels that he failed himself or someone else important to him. Perhaps in a way he feels so sick he doesn't give a fuck anymore. Now, I have to enter therapy, just to get at my harassing, nagging voices. And get back to AA or something like it. And find some reconciliation to a higher power I drifted from awhile ago, for no real good reason. And I hafta stop. Drinking. Today. Ben must do these things and people his life with sober helpful honest people, and I know for a fact there are a few in Hollywood. But a bunch of dithering strangers talking about it all will not help him at all. Peace out.

Life can be a very hard place to exist in. I think most people are just trying to cope and survive the best way they know how to.
Life is not easy at all. Human beings are very flawed people. We all have demons. I always try to remind myself of that.
No one is perfect, no one. We all have our struggles in this world.

R242: Amen, and I also must add, both Ben and I must find some crazy inner strength or grace, at least enough to give up and surrender. what a moment that was in my life. the earth and all the universe shifted inside me, and i was...sober!

Ben Affleck is too narcissistic to ever kill himself. If he dies from his addictions it will be because he wrapped his car around a tree or something.
by Anonymous | reply 244 | October 29, 2019 3:54 PM |
I always thought at some point I’ll indulge again. I don’t think I would mind being one of those old retiree drunks hanging at the bars in SF or NYC in the afternoon, having dinner at 5 and falling asleep by 7. I don’t have that luxury now. But not sure it’s a horrible way to ride out the end days.
by Anonymous | reply 245 | October 29, 2019 3:56 PM |
Now I know why he didn't move out immediately after the split. He stayed on Jens compound for over a year right? Then as soon as he moved out, he relapsed with the SNL tranny. Either go back to Jens or move into a recovery house full time.

r245: Dont worry, it's horrible enough to keep some people sober. I remember when I was still sober seeing an old drunk down on the beach every day at Gulf Shores (you know, on da Guff?) and thinking it didn't lookas though he was having one helluva lot of fun. and what a drag it would be, ogling the swimming suit crowd from the sixty year old, drunk perspective, only folling yourself every fucking day
by Anonymous | reply 247 | October 29, 2019 4:15 PM |
Meh - retirement of watching CNN all day or surfing the internet vs. drinking at a gay bar. Not sure the gay bar life is so horrible. At least it’s social.

He's a functioning alkie. I know many like this.
He probably doesn't remember a time when he hasn't been a drunk. He probably started drinking when he was a teenager...he doesn't know how to be sober. Sober is boring to him. He can't do it.
He was able to star in hit movies, direct oscar nominated films, win oscars as a drunk, gambler, whore fucker, and make millions while being fucked up. He's done pretty well in his mind. He's not gonna give it up. He might be a bit superstitious and think he can't be a success if he doesn't drink etc...who knows?
by Anonymous | reply 250 | October 29, 2019 6:15 PM |
Why's he so angry? Does he drink because he's angry or does he get angry when he drinks?
How much more does this dude have to achieve (and lose) and achieve again before he's not pissed off anymore?
I don't understand people like that. What a horrible way to live life.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | October 29, 2019 6:31 PM |
That kind of anger comes from not feeling loved / being abused as a child. It’s trite, but true.
The question is how to deal with that. What makes it better? I can’t think of anything. Even if the offending parent dies, it doesn’t help.
by Anonymous | reply 252 | October 29, 2019 6:38 PM |
I think that would describe a lot of Hollywood but not Affleck. He's definitely not a functional drunk. He has extreme impulse control issues which is why the whole world can tell when he spirals. When he gets going, he forgets about being discreet, he starts fucking the nearest plain faced gold digger, he's at any casino that will have him, he never changes his Tshirts, gets his meals at drive throughs and his work falls apart.
Now Brad Pitt was a good example of a functional addict. Up until he said he's been drunk everyday since high school, who would have guessed. I bet you DiCaprio is also one.
by Anonymous | reply 253 | October 29, 2019 6:40 PM |

Staying sober in Tinsel Town isn’t for the mild at heart. There’s everything you want to stay high/drunk, and more where that came from.
People who haven’t lived in LA think they know how it works, but they really don’t.
LA is the biggest party town I’ve ever lived in. There is literally hundreds of place to choose from every night of the week. Celebrities don’t usually hit the club on a weekend. They go on Mondays, or Tuesdays, and usually go to places where film/music industry people hang out. Weekends are for partying at home, or at some suite at the Four Seasons, or Vegas, or New York.
Regardless, there’s ALWAYS something going on if you have disposable income, and wanna get high AF. Shit is on offer constantly. Booze, blow, pills, pot, you name it. If you want it, you find it pretty quickly.

R262 I get exactly what your saying. And I agree with you. I wouldn't trade places with Ben Affleck through. I was speaking really about people in general, that life in general is hard.
I'm a person of color and I believe Ben is spoiled and an over privileged white man. I don't feel sorry for him at all. He has everything monetarily anyway.
I just meant that life can be really rough at times. I do agree that if everything was taken away from him he'd be completely fucked.

(I'm 67 y/o and only have 7 years sobriety). When you get sick and tired enough of being sick and tired, come back. My father drowned himself in the Magnolia River, because he gave up. That's OK, too, of course. But you sound as if you've the will to survive.

Actually I do think he will die soon. I can’t see him living to 60 years old. If it’s not intentional suicide, it will be an OD on a heavy bender, maybe in Las Vegas. (Because Ben is classy like that) Some gamboling, drinking, whores, cocaine, and then the heart stops.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | October 30, 2019 2:48 PM |
Agreed R279. He reminds me a bit of the kid from Glee who od'ed. He even looks a bit like him. Ben hates himself for some reason. There's a lot of self loathing there.

If he doesn't OD, it's going to be a heart attack. You can't drink, smoke, do coke and eat garbage like that and not have cardiac problems. Carrie Fisher, George Michael, etc.

He seems like the type who will always push his high. Keith Richards credits his longevity to the purity of his drugs and the idea that there is only so high you can get, don't cross that line. Ben doesn't have that line. I don't have it either once I'm fucked up. It's very scary.
