There's the gay community, etc, but not all those letters don't really go together. It simply makes no sense.

r25 Christ! What bad experience did you have with the word "queer". Queer wasn't derogatory in my day. There was "Queer Literature", "Queer Cinema", you could major in "Queer Studies" at my University, there was "Queer Politics", etc. It was a blanket word that covered all things "gay related".
