Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci's love story “Supernova”

[quote] “Supernova,” a romance starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci as a longtime couple on a road trip, has inked a raft of early distribution deals after having just wrapped a six-week shoot in England’s scenic Lake District.

A love story for eldergays!😍

by Anonymousreply 1October 24, 2019 7:03 PM

It'll never get released, because some dumb Twitter cunt will complain that two straight men are playing gay.

by Anonymousreply 2October 24, 2019 7:17 PM

I just became pregnant seeing this post

by Anonymousreply 3October 24, 2019 7:21 PM

Colin could still get it.

by Anonymousreply 4October 24, 2019 7:47 PM

Hope there is anal. Do people have anal in the Lake District?

by Anonymousreply 5October 24, 2019 7:48 PM

R2 the only reason this movie got made is because two straight men are playing gay.

If it were two out gay actors it wouldn't have even gotten funding.

That's reason enough to piss me off.

by Anonymousreply 9October 24, 2019 10:01 PM

I'm sure they're already lensing the porn version with Adam Russo and Dallas Steele in Palm Springs.

by Anonymousreply 10October 24, 2019 10:11 PM

Stanley Tucci’s portrayal of a sexless gay man in Devil Wears Prada was so awful and over-the-top, I’d hate to see his portrayal of a gay man who actually has sex.

Can you think of two out gay actors with the clout and box office draw of these two?

by Anonymousreply 18September 22, 2020 7:37 PM

This reminds me of when Miriam Margolyes was a guest on The Graham Norton Show. She expressed her discomfort at playing gay characters. She tried to sell the idea of straight actors doing such roles better and guess who agreed with her? Stanley Tucci.

I'm glad that Graham Norton's facial expression showed he was not co-signing such nonsense.

[Quote] Can you think of two out gay actors with the clout and box office draw of these two?

This movie won't do numbers. It will at best benefit the "brave" straights come award time.

by Anonymousreply 21September 22, 2020 7:38 PM

Would a Colin Firth end up with a Stanley Tucci??

by Anonymousreply 22September 22, 2020 7:39 PM

[Quote] Can you think of two out gay actors with the clout and box office draw of these two?

Stanley Tucci is a character actor. He has never had box office draw. And I can't think of too many Colin Firth vehicles, certainly not box office successes. Even "A Single Man" was sold more on Tom Ford's name.

by Anonymousreply 23September 22, 2020 7:39 PM

They could have made it with Rupert Everett (Firth was Everett's successor in the play of "Another Country") and Denis O'Hare.

by Anonymousreply 24September 22, 2020 7:41 PM

[Quote] Would a Colin Firth end up with a Stanley Tucci??

Didn't Colin Firth end up a cuckold?

by Anonymousreply 25September 22, 2020 7:42 PM

Lee Pace and Richard Armitage could have brought the project some buzz, especially if they acknowledge that they had once been a couple.

by Anonymousreply 26September 22, 2020 7:43 PM

I'm glad it's getting good reviews. I wish we had the movies back. Would love to see it. Who did you want for the parts -Stephen Fry and Nathan Lane?

The younger generation has some film actors to consider but I can't think of many eldergays that aren't tv actors and mostly from the TV show Frasier that could open a picture like this.

by Anonymousreply 27September 22, 2020 7:43 PM

Open a picture? Is this going to be on a shit ton of screens? I doubt it.

by Anonymousreply 28September 22, 2020 7:46 PM

r26, Armitage isn't out. But his next roll is as a gay man, no.

by Anonymousreply 29September 22, 2020 7:49 PM

Is it a jelly roll?

by Anonymousreply 30September 22, 2020 7:51 PM

It's absolute bullshit that straight people shouldn't play gay roles. That will very possibly lead to people claiming that only straight people should play straight roles. And guess what then happens? Actors will most certainly not come out since they'd lose so many job opportunities.

There are obviously always people who demand that every gay person MUST come out for the cause. In a way social media is already acting like some kind of truth commission. Many of these people refuse to believe bisexuality is real, everything is black and white to them.

The world is getting crazier every minute, and some people acting like know-it-alls about gay rights are about to do some serious damage in their attempt to separate people by their sexuality, color etc into neat separate groups. We're going back decades in gay rights because of this idiotic separationist agenda.

by Anonymousreply 31September 22, 2020 7:54 PM

It will disappear from screens around the globe as quickly as it's showing begins, sinking into film oblivion.

by Anonymousreply 35September 22, 2020 7:57 PM

Rolling my eyes at the comments about "opening the picture" or "box office clout." This movie will $12.89, if that. It's purely a prestige, awards-bait kind of project, and the idea that Firth and the very tired Tucci will "sell it" is absurd.

In which case--why not cast openly gay actors?

by Anonymousreply 36September 22, 2020 7:58 PM

Except, of course, the entire premise of the movie appears to be based on Tucci having a degenerative disease like Alzheimer's, so they'd be a bit young for it.

The producers could have hired one gay actor at least.

[quote] Out actors are sidelined all the time. But let's continue to support "brave" straight actors in their vanity projects.

Oh please, you're fully aware how many actors are in the closet. Most actors seem to be bi, married to opposite sex or not. You want them to come out and only then should they be granted the right to play gay people. You're trying to dictate what kind of people are worthy, and I have a feeling you also have a list of undesirable traits gay people shouldn't have. I'm obviously projecting here since I know nothing about you but I've met gay men who try to follow the "rules of being gay" so slavishly they are constantly correcting others for doing things wrong.

by Anonymousreply 47September 22, 2020 8:16 PM

It's not about granting someone the right. The closet writes gay people out of public life. Look at Hal Fucking Prince.

by Anonymousreply 48September 22, 2020 8:18 PM

[Quote] I have a feeling you also have a list of undesirable traits gay people shouldn't have.

Perhaps you should examine why, to bolster your own sense of your "correct" opinion, you think of words unstated by me...

by Anonymousreply 49September 22, 2020 8:19 PM

[quote] Rolling my eyes at the comments about "opening the picture" or "box office clout."

Thank you! I have to laugh reading the eldergays comments as if we're still living in the era of the studio system where big stars draw an audience. Those days are long behind us, and there's only a few actors today that can open a picture just by their name alone.

Some here are acting like Firth and Tucci have DiCaprio and Cruise type of clout. Laughable.

by Anonymousreply 50September 22, 2020 8:22 PM

It's called acting. If you limit gay roles to just openly out actors then you have less talent to pull from.

Let's stop thinking like reality shows. Lose me in a character and I don't care what the actor's background is.

by Anonymousreply 51September 22, 2020 8:34 PM

And why do you have less talent to pull from? It's not like the acting profession lacks gay talent.

by Anonymousreply 52September 22, 2020 8:36 PM

What's the problem? Plenty of gay actors/actresses play straight roles.

by Anonymousreply 53September 22, 2020 8:46 PM

The trailer made me want to see the movie because of the actors, who are talented actors. Both have played gay, so there is hardly a “brave” factor. I find a little mystifying The idea that only gay actors should play gay roles. It is acting, after all. Gay actors should have more opportunities, sure, including playing straight.

by Anonymousreply 54September 22, 2020 8:57 PM

I sometimes wonder if people who vehemently demand gay roles to be played only by gay actors are just shit-stirring homophobes enjoying pitting us against each other. Divide and conquer.

by Anonymousreply 55September 22, 2020 9:03 PM

I don't mind them casting straight actors in a movie like this, but I'm not going to watch it. Why would I watch straight guys fake being gay when I have access to real gay people, facing situations like this in real life?

But the producers don't care about me. The target audience for this movie is straight people. It sounds like a downer movie anyway.

by Anonymousreply 67September 22, 2020 10:33 PM

I'm annoyed with straight actors always getting plumb gay roles:

[quote]"I met him, we got on famously," Macqueen said of Tucci. "He said, 'Can we talk about who plays opposite me? Have you thought about Colin Firth, because I could get the script to him?' Of course, I said, 'That would be amazing.' And he said, 'Good, because I gave it to him yesterday and he read it and loves it and he wants to meet you.' It was quite extraordinary quickly it came together in the end." And we know what you're asking, but why? "I thought your sensibility was right, and I thought I needed a great actor to do this with, and that’s you," Tucci told Firth in the feature. "Also, because you’re my friend, and we know each other so well, it seemed we could bring that to it; a history, that maybe two actors who didn’t know each other couldn’t bring." But it could have been interesting to see what two out, gay actors would have brought to it no?

Tucci believes a straight actor would be great in a gay role. Not because he's gay or knows what it's like to be gay or has a life filled with gay experiences, but because they've known each other for 20 years.

I more pissed off at straight writers and directors thinking they can tell our stories better than we can. The only reason any straight person does a film like this is for awards and accolades.

Tucci has made a CAREER out of playing gay. Him and Richard E. Grant are always so flaming I just assume they are closeted or heteroflexible.

[quote]I find a little mystifying The idea that only gay actors should play gay roles. It is acting, after all. Gay actors should have more opportunities, sure, including playing straight.

Gay actors should be treated as equals to straight actors. The problem is they are not. They don’t get the same opportunities to play straight OR gay.

It’s not as if the producers of this movie went around looking for two openly gay actors for these roles. I mean these are two big names but ... it’s not as if two openly gay actors around this age would have ever had the chance to get to their level.

Because Hollywood is always willing to cast straight people in gay roles because they know the straight public will go see them because they have big names and they’re not actually gay! And gay people will just be excited to have the representation so they will go and see them too!

Multiple things can be true at once: gay and straight actors should be able to play gay or straight and that Hollywood has a terrible history of treating gay actors as second class performers.

by Anonymousreply 70September 22, 2020 10:49 PM

Let's face facts; films like this are not made for us, they're made for straight audiences. Romanticized and idealized versions of our lives made by straight people for straight people.

by Anonymousreply 71September 22, 2020 10:53 PM

r54, you just exposed your stupidity. Would you say the same thing about White people playing black people?

I agree completely with r68. Part of the problem is that all the gay movies are written by breeders who do not know anything about being gay. Tucci just exposed himself as an asshole and a gaybaiter. He is an overrated actor, and he needs to have several seats and be shown the door with his equally-overrated homophobic/transphobic brother-in-law.

by Anonymousreply 72September 22, 2020 11:05 PM

Then go ahead and start writing gay screenplays, you gays who are complaining about straight people cornering the market!

Stop whining and start solving the problem, if you believe that it’s a problem.

What next? Male and female writers for each screenplay, dividing up the dialogue between them on gender lines? Gay writers / directors / continuity/script editors barred from working on “straight” content?

by Anonymousreply 73September 22, 2020 11:23 PM

It doesn’t matter to me if straight actors play gay or vice versa. That’s what acting is about. It’s not a documentary. I’d wager that getting top names is more useful for the initial funding anyway.

My only problem with this is that Colin Firth is a horrible, horrible actor. He gives the exact same performance in every film he’s ever been in.

by Anonymousreply 82September 23, 2020 12:58 AM

[quote]Part of the problem is that all the gay movies are written by breeders

There are literally dozens and maybe hundreds of gay movies written and directed by gay people. The problem is that most of them are total crap with a budget of $10. Gay films do not get the funding because they don't sell that well. Thankfully there are exceptions like Brokeback Mountain and Moonlight but overall gay matters don't really matter to the big masses. We should be glad that more or less straight stars want to play gay roles because those are the faces that sell the movie. Colin Firth has played a gay man in at least 4 films and I'm totally for it. I suspect he's one of those people who've made homosexuality more approachable to those who don't know much about it. He's handsome and extremely likeable. Why wouldn't we want an ambassador like that. I can tell you I'd much rather watch him be a gay man for 2 hours than out actors like Anthony Rapp.

It's idiotic to try to control who can make art and what that art should be like, and yet here we are.

Stop right there. Not a film made by gay people. Writers Annie Proulx and Larry McMurtry, straight. Director Ang Lee, straight. All 4 acting leads, straight (at least publically).

I love BBM, but it's a piss-poor example of "gay people telling their own stories," which is what many of these posters are asking for. Some of you simply don't understand that concept.

Read my post again. BBM is an example of a more or less straight-made film getting the funding unlike most films made by gay people. BBM is a gorgeous example of a high quality product made my true professionals. Keep in mind that people bitching about gay people not getting to make gay films would've stopped the film from being made, and yet the film single-handedly did more to advance gay rights than probably all other gay films together.

All this discussion about who should play what, who should be the director, who should be the writer, only gays can tell gay stories, is so tiresome, as if this movie is the only representation we will have this year.

Between Prime, Netflix, and Hulu, there are hundreds of gay titles that I will never get around to seeing; there is an overwhelming amount of gay content out there, so why make a big fuss about this one not checking all the woke boxes.

And I have to disagree about this movie being made for straights; from what i can tell, it looks like it's been made for a certain educated and discerning section of the gay male audience.

People conflate straight actors playing gay characters with not providing enough roles and opportunities for out gay actors and they are not the same thing.

You can cast straight men to play gay characters AND still address the lack of diversity in casting, I really would not like to have a world where an actor can only play a version of themselves, that would completely stifle creativity and talent. Equally, there absolutely needs to be more opportunities for gay actors to play any type of character, including straight, and there needs to be more high profile film and television gay characters who are not just the funny best friend throwaway, but demonstrate all the different facets of life.

by Anonymousreply 112September 23, 2020 12:34 PM

quote] So Firth played gay in Apartment Zero, Mamma Mia!, Another Country, A Single man and this latest one. That five, one more than Alan Bates.

I think you also have to include "Mama Mia! Here We Go Again", the sequel for the count. Also, his credits on IMDB are so voluminous and unfamiliar to me, I can't be sure he hasn't played gay even more than that, unless some Colin fan knows for sure.

He's the straight go-to guy for the gay. Even Tom Ford uses him for that.

by Anonymousreply 113September 23, 2020 1:51 PM

All the homo apologists here are most likely in the biz themselves and are part of the problem.

Most gay directors don't want to work with gay actors. Most gay writers don't want gay actors saying their lines. They seem to believe that having hets do their parts legitimizes their work.

Like that lesbian director who said she didn't make The Kids Are Alright for gay audiences. She wants straight praise and so do most gays involved in film making.

Fuck them all and fuck the house gays kneeling before great straight Hollywood scraping and bowing in hopes of getting their scraps.

by Anonymousreply 114September 23, 2020 1:54 PM

[quote]the only reason this movie got made is because two straight men are playing gay. If it were two out gay actors it wouldn't have even gotten funding.

You have no fucking clue what you're talking about.

by Anonymousreply 115September 23, 2020 2:06 PM

[quote] Most gay directors don't want to work with gay actors. Most gay writers don't want gay actors saying their lines. They seem to believe that having hets do their parts legitimizes their work.

I work in development and what you say is a delusional fantasy of a frau living at some flyover state. You're also 20 years late in your assumptions of how the business works.

If you're a gay guy you're beyond stupid and clueless too.

by Anonymousreply 116September 23, 2020 2:13 PM

[quote] Let's face facts; films like this are not made for us, they're made for straight audiences. Romanticized and idealized versions of our lives made by straight people for straight people.

What exactly does that mean? Honest question. I had a very t normal and somewhat boring life as a gay guy. Are you saying all gay stories should deal with conflicts, closets, suicide and coming out? I don't know any gay person from my personal group who's had any sort of out of the ordinary conflict. This isn't the 1980s anymore, the world evolved.

by Anonymousreply 117September 23, 2020 2:21 PM

Stephen Fry was a joke suggestion by someone to undermine complaints about casting straight actors. No one thinks he's a fucking actor. He's a comedian.

by Anonymousreply 118September 23, 2020 2:33 PM

Fry isn't even that and I'm sure he thinks that he's an ACTOR.

by Anonymousreply 119September 23, 2020 2:35 PM

an ACTEUR!

by Anonymousreply 120September 23, 2020 2:38 PM

[Quote] Equally, there absolutely needs to be more opportunities for gay actors to play any type of character, including straight, and there needs to be more high profile film and television gay characters who are not just the funny best friend throwaway, but demonstrate all the different facets of life.

And where do we start? It's lovely to say "Oh, yes we must address this issue" and then nothing is done about it. One way to tackle the issue is to cast gay actors in leading roles as gay characters. Out actors - yes, even ones who have been cast as romantic leads prior to coming out - see opportunities dry up, such that gay assistants/waiters/clerks become all that they are seen for on screen. (Some actors are only ever right for supporting roles or bit parts, those aren't the kind of actors I'm talking about.)

I find it laughable that more than one person in this thread has suggested that "marginal" talents might then be cast in leading roles just because they are gay. I guess it shows that homophobia even influences assessment of talent, which is so fucking laughable considering how many successful actors are (and have been through history) closeted homosexuals...

by Anonymousreply 121September 23, 2020 2:39 PM

The last acting role in which I saw Fry was a cameo part as a doctor in a French/Euro gay movie. It wasn't even a dramatic part but her managed to stink.

by Anonymousreply 122September 23, 2020 2:41 PM

*he managed

by Anonymousreply 123September 23, 2020 2:41 PM

Politics aside - the film looks awesome! I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

by Anonymousreply 124September 23, 2020 3:00 PM

Must all supposedly straight actors (they're actually bi but whatever) throw an affectation in their acting when portraying gay characters? it's so frustrating. Can't they just portray a person as anyone else like Heath Ledger did in Brokeback Mountain?

by Anonymousreply 125September 23, 2020 4:09 PM

Fry is an actor and a comedian. One does not have to think highly of his skills, but if one peruses his IMDB, they will see that he does plenty non-comedic work. When people think of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, I doubt the first thing people think now is "Fry and Laurie", but their individual work.

by Anonymousreply 126September 23, 2020 5:02 PM

I don’t really have an opinion as about actor, but I have enjoyed his novels. In case he’s reading this thread so he doesn’t slit his wrists.

by Anonymousreply 127September 23, 2020 5:12 PM

What is Fry's non-comedic work? His documentaries? He'd never have got "Wilde" if it weren't for a vague resemblance to the subject.

by Anonymousreply 128September 23, 2020 5:14 PM

R116 is a gay lapdog and will defend to his death the homophobia and anti-gay bigotry in Hollywood and the film business in general. He'd rather trash gay men than admit his straight bosses don't like gay men.

by Anonymousreply 129September 23, 2020 5:23 PM

From Variety review @ r57:

[quote]Whether he’s unable to accept grimly imminent reality more out of defiant love for his life partner of several decades, or his own cavernous terror of being left alone, is a question that “Supernova” addresses with moving frankness, even when its characters talk gingerly around the issue.

Just lost my love of 40 years. This cut right to the quick.

by Anonymousreply 130September 23, 2020 5:23 PM

Hollywood loves gay men as long as they're child molesters like Bryan Singer, or lapdogs like Ellen, or closet cases. You can be a fucking degenerate piece of shit and as long as you're straight you'll never be out of work. But be openly gay and your career is over.

by Anonymousreply 131September 23, 2020 5:26 PM

i'm so sorry, r130

by Anonymousreply 132September 23, 2020 5:27 PM

Most of the people here trashing what gay men are writing about this film are not gay--they're hets trying to defend their own beliefs that gay actors should not play gay characters. Sadly, they also believe they cannot play straight either.

by Anonymousreply 133September 23, 2020 5:28 PM

[Quote] Just lost my love of 40 years.

I condole you.

by Anonymousreply 134September 23, 2020 5:28 PM

R117 I'm sure you loved BBM as well, right? Straight audiences only want stories about gay men if someone dies. If yo think the world has evolved why don't you move to some southern state and see how much it has evolved for gay people.

by Anonymousreply 135September 23, 2020 5:30 PM

[quote] is a gay lapdog and will defend to his death the homophobia and anti-gay bigotry in Hollywood and the film business in general. He'd rather trash gay men than admit his straight bosses don't like gay men.

Whatever dude, keep living your outlandish fantasies of how Hollywood works from you couch in Bumfuck, Idaho. What you claim wasn't real 15 years ago, let alone today, I won't engage with you any further. BBM is artistic relevant, but I don't care about the film or its story. It does have great acting and direction though.

FYI finding a gay boss in development or any artistic side of this business is like finding a needle in a haystack but I'm sure you know that already.

by Anonymousreply 136September 23, 2020 5:48 PM

^^^Proved my point about what Hollywood thinks of out gay actors.

by Anonymousreply 137September 23, 2020 6:04 PM

Jesus, R130, I’m so sorry to hear that.

by Anonymousreply 138September 24, 2020 2:08 AM

Very sorry for your loss, R130. You will learn to avoid or embrace movies like this. It's very personal.

by Anonymousreply 139September 25, 2020 2:55 AM

Eeek! Do 60 year old writers get early onset dementia in their 50s? Like this character? I've never heard of that. Maybe ex ball players....

by Anonymousreply 140September 26, 2020 12:53 PM

Alzheimer's used to refer to dementia with onset before age 65. Yes, people dement at earlier ages and have for decades.

by Anonymousreply 141September 26, 2020 3:21 PM

To those who are saying that the 2 lead roles should have been cast with out gay actors - who do you think should have been cast?

by Anonymousreply 142September 26, 2020 4:05 PM

My sister was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 50 and was dead before 60. It happens R140.

by Anonymousreply 143September 26, 2020 4:07 PM

^^^True. My cousin works at a home for Dementia patients and on her first day she was shocked to see a woman in her 40s living there.

by Anonymousreply 144September 28, 2020 7:47 PM

Tucci and Firth have aged in completely opposite ways. Tucci got uglier with age while Firth got hotter.

by Anonymousreply 145September 28, 2020 7:57 PM

Tucci was always... regular looking.

by Anonymousreply 146September 28, 2020 8:06 PM

Tucci was hot back in the day. As he aged he started to look worse and worse. Firth was ugly when he was younger but has gotten hot as he's aged into his daddy years.

by Anonymousreply 147September 28, 2020 8:58 PM

Firth has never been my cup of tea but to suggest that he was a minger is a bit much.

by Anonymousreply 148September 28, 2020 9:02 PM

Tucci is just another short cocky actor with a little muscle. (NYC theatre is full of this guy.) Time has not been kind to him.

And while it's inoffensive, his portrayal of the non-gay/gay character in DEVIL WORE PRADA was hardly some brave new achievement in gay representation. Some on DL give him way too much credit for that.

by Anonymousreply 149September 28, 2020 9:07 PM

[quote]Tucci and Firth have aged in completely opposite ways. Tucci got uglier with age while Firth got hotter.

I agree. Once he hit his fifties he became handsome to me. He's moreso attractive with the beard.

by Anonymousreply 150September 28, 2020 9:21 PM

Oh yes, Firth was just utterly DISGUSTING when younger.

by Anonymousreply 151September 29, 2020 1:09 AM

Tucci has always been a character actor--it doesn't matter if he's lost his looks. Firth is more of a leading man---he has no choice but to try his best to hold onto his looks.

by Anonymousreply 152September 29, 2020 2:05 AM

R148, to do this, no actor has ever come close to playing Mr. Darcy as brilliantly as Colin Firth. He owns that role!

by Anonymousreply 153September 29, 2020 2:10 AM

*To this day

by Anonymousreply 154September 29, 2020 2:10 AM

Tucci does "gay" so well, it's hard for me to think of him as straight. No matter the role he plays.

by Anonymousreply 155September 29, 2020 2:25 AM

Now that Supernova has been released what do we think of it?

87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
