This reminds me of when Miriam Margolyes was a guest on The Graham Norton Show. She expressed her discomfort at playing gay characters. She tried to sell the idea of straight actors doing such roles better and guess who agreed with her? Stanley Tucci.
I'm glad that Graham Norton's facial expression showed he was not co-signing such nonsense.

Stanley Tucci is a character actor. He has never had box office draw. And I can't think of too many Colin Firth vehicles, certainly not box office successes. Even "A Single Man" was sold more on Tom Ford's name.

It's absolute bullshit that straight people shouldn't play gay roles. That will very possibly lead to people claiming that only straight people should play straight roles. And guess what then happens? Actors will most certainly not come out since they'd lose so many job opportunities.
There are obviously always people who demand that every gay person MUST come out for the cause. In a way social media is already acting like some kind of truth commission. Many of these people refuse to believe bisexuality is real, everything is black and white to them.
The world is getting crazier every minute, and some people acting like know-it-alls about gay rights are about to do some serious damage in their attempt to separate people by their sexuality, color etc into neat separate groups. We're going back decades in gay rights because of this idiotic separationist agenda.

Rolling my eyes at the comments about "opening the picture" or "box office clout." This movie will $12.89, if that. It's purely a prestige, awards-bait kind of project, and the idea that Firth and the very tired Tucci will "sell it" is absurd.

Oh please, you're fully aware how many actors are in the closet. Most actors seem to be bi, married to opposite sex or not. You want them to come out and only then should they be granted the right to play gay people. You're trying to dictate what kind of people are worthy, and I have a feeling you also have a list of undesirable traits gay people shouldn't have. I'm obviously projecting here since I know nothing about you but I've met gay men who try to follow the "rules of being gay" so slavishly they are constantly correcting others for doing things wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 22, 2020 8:16 PM |
It's not about granting someone the right. The closet writes gay people out of public life. Look at Hal Fucking Prince.

Thank you! I have to laugh reading the eldergays comments as if we're still living in the era of the studio system where big stars draw an audience. Those days are long behind us, and there's only a few actors today that can open a picture just by their name alone.
Some here are acting like Firth and Tucci have DiCaprio and Cruise type of clout. Laughable.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 22, 2020 8:22 PM |
It's called acting. If you limit gay roles to just openly out actors then you have less talent to pull from.
Let's stop thinking like reality shows. Lose me in a character and I don't care what the actor's background is.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 22, 2020 8:34 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 22, 2020 8:57 PM |

I'm annoyed with straight actors always getting plumb gay roles:
[quote]"I met him, we got on famously," Macqueen said of Tucci. "He said, 'Can we talk about who plays opposite me? Have you thought about Colin Firth, because I could get the script to him?' Of course, I said, 'That would be amazing.' And he said, 'Good, because I gave it to him yesterday and he read it and loves it and he wants to meet you.' It was quite extraordinary quickly it came together in the end." And we know what you're asking, but why? "I thought your sensibility was right, and I thought I needed a great actor to do this with, and that’s you," Tucci told Firth in the feature. "Also, because you’re my friend, and we know each other so well, it seemed we could bring that to it; a history, that maybe two actors who didn’t know each other couldn’t bring." But it could have been interesting to see what two out, gay actors would have brought to it no?
Tucci believes a straight actor would be great in a gay role. Not because he's gay or knows what it's like to be gay or has a life filled with gay experiences, but because they've known each other for 20 years.
I more pissed off at straight writers and directors thinking they can tell our stories better than we can. The only reason any straight person does a film like this is for awards and accolades.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 22, 2020 10:38 PM |

[quote]I find a little mystifying The idea that only gay actors should play gay roles. It is acting, after all. Gay actors should have more opportunities, sure, including playing straight.
Gay actors should be treated as equals to straight actors. The problem is they are not. They don’t get the same opportunities to play straight OR gay.
It’s not as if the producers of this movie went around looking for two openly gay actors for these roles. I mean these are two big names but ... it’s not as if two openly gay actors around this age would have ever had the chance to get to their level.
Because Hollywood is always willing to cast straight people in gay roles because they know the straight public will go see them because they have big names and they’re not actually gay! And gay people will just be excited to have the representation so they will go and see them too!
Multiple things can be true at once: gay and straight actors should be able to play gay or straight and that Hollywood has a terrible history of treating gay actors as second class performers.

I agree completely with r68. Part of the problem is that all the gay movies are written by breeders who do not know anything about being gay. Tucci just exposed himself as an asshole and a gaybaiter. He is an overrated actor, and he needs to have several seats and be shown the door with his equally-overrated homophobic/transphobic brother-in-law.

[quote]Part of the problem is that all the gay movies are written by breeders
There are literally dozens and maybe hundreds of gay movies written and directed by gay people. The problem is that most of them are total crap with a budget of $10. Gay films do not get the funding because they don't sell that well. Thankfully there are exceptions like Brokeback Mountain and Moonlight but overall gay matters don't really matter to the big masses. We should be glad that more or less straight stars want to play gay roles because those are the faces that sell the movie. Colin Firth has played a gay man in at least 4 films and I'm totally for it. I suspect he's one of those people who've made homosexuality more approachable to those who don't know much about it. He's handsome and extremely likeable. Why wouldn't we want an ambassador like that. I can tell you I'd much rather watch him be a gay man for 2 hours than out actors like Anthony Rapp.
It's idiotic to try to control who can make art and what that art should be like, and yet here we are.

Stop right there. Not a film made by gay people. Writers Annie Proulx and Larry McMurtry, straight. Director Ang Lee, straight. All 4 acting leads, straight (at least publically).

BBM is a gorgeous example of a high quality product made my true professionals. All this discussion about who should play what, who should be the director, who should be the writer, only gays can tell gay stories, is so tiresome, as if this movie is the only representation we will have this year.
Between Prime, Netflix, and Hulu, there are hundreds of gay titles that I will never get around to seeing; there is an overwhelming amount of gay content out there, so why make a big fuss about this one not checking all the woke boxes.
And I have to disagree about this movie being made for straights; from what i can tell, it looks like it's been made for a certain educated and discerning section of the gay male audience.

People conflate straight actors playing gay characters with not providing enough roles and opportunities for out gay actors and they are not the same thing.
You can cast straight men to play gay characters AND still address the lack of diversity in casting, I really would not like to have a world where an actor can only play a version of themselves, that would completely stifle creativity and talent. Equally, there absolutely needs to be more opportunities for gay actors to play any type of character, including straight, and there needs to be more high profile film and television gay characters who are not just the funny best friend throwaway, but demonstrate all the different facets of life.

All the homo apologists here are most likely in the biz themselves and are part of the problem.
Most gay directors don't want to work with gay actors. Most gay writers don't want gay actors saying their lines. They seem to believe that having hets do their parts legitimizes their work.
Like that lesbian director who said she didn't make The Kids Are Alright for gay audiences. She wants straight praise and so do most gays involved in film making.
Fuck them all and fuck the house gays kneeling before great straight Hollywood scraping and bowing in hopes of getting their scraps.

[quote]the only reason this movie got made is because two straight men are playing gay. If it were two out gay actors it wouldn't have even gotten funding.
You have no fucking clue what you're talking about.

I work in development and what you say is a delusional fantasy of a frau living at some flyover state. You're also 20 years late in your assumptions of how the business works.
If you're a gay guy you're beyond stupid and clueless too.

[quote] Let's face facts; films like this are not made for us, they're made for straight audiences. Romanticized and idealized versions of our lives made by straight people for straight people.
What exactly does that mean? Honest question. I had a very t normal and somewhat boring life as a gay guy. Are you saying all gay stories should deal with conflicts, closets, suicide and coming out? I don't know any gay person from my personal group who's had any sort of out of the ordinary conflict. This isn't the 1980s anymore, the world evolved.

Stephen Fry was a joke suggestion by someone to undermine complaints about casting straight actors. No one thinks he's a fucking actor. He's a comedian.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | September 23, 2020 2:33 PM |
Fry isn't even that and I'm sure he thinks that he's an ACTOR.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | September 23, 2020 2:35 PM |
an ACTEUR!

[Quote] Equally, there absolutely needs to be more opportunities for gay actors to play any type of character, including straight, and there needs to be more high profile film and television gay characters who are not just the funny best friend throwaway, but demonstrate all the different facets of life.
And where do we start? It's lovely to say "Oh, yes we must address this issue" and then nothing is done about it. One way to tackle the issue is to cast gay actors in leading roles as gay characters. Out actors - yes, even ones who have been cast as romantic leads prior to coming out - see opportunities dry up, such that gay assistants/waiters/clerks become all that they are seen for on screen. (Some actors are only ever right for supporting roles or bit parts, those aren't the kind of actors I'm talking about.)
I find it laughable that more than one person in this thread has suggested that "marginal" talents might then be cast in leading roles just because they are gay. I guess it shows that homophobia even influences assessment of talent, which is so fucking laughable considering how many successful actors are (and have been through history) closeted homosexuals...

The last acting role in which I saw Fry was a cameo part as a doctor in a French/Euro gay movie. It wasn't even a dramatic part but her managed to stink.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | September 23, 2020 2:41 PM |
*he managed
by Anonymous | reply 123 | September 23, 2020 2:41 PM |
Politics aside - the film looks awesome! I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

Must all supposedly straight actors (they're actually bi but whatever) throw an affectation in their acting when portraying gay characters? it's so frustrating. Can't they just portray a person as anyone else like Heath Ledger did in Brokeback Mountain?
by Anonymous | reply 125 | September 23, 2020 4:09 PM |
Fry is an actor and a comedian. One does not have to think highly of his skills, but if one peruses his IMDB, they will see that he does plenty non-comedic work. When people think of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, I doubt the first thing people think now is "Fry and Laurie", but their individual work.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | September 23, 2020 5:02 PM |
I don’t really have an opinion as about actor, but I have enjoyed his novels. In case he’s reading this thread so he doesn’t slit his wrists.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | September 23, 2020 5:12 PM |
What is Fry's non-comedic work? His documentaries? He'd never have got "Wilde" if it weren't for a vague resemblance to the subject.

R116 is a gay lapdog and will defend to his death the homophobia and anti-gay bigotry in Hollywood and the film business in general. He'd rather trash gay men than admit his straight bosses don't like gay men.

From Variety review @ r57:
[quote]Whether he’s unable to accept grimly imminent reality more out of defiant love for his life partner of several decades, or his own cavernous terror of being left alone, is a question that “Supernova” addresses with moving frankness, even when its characters talk gingerly around the issue.

Hollywood loves gay men as long as they're child molesters like Bryan Singer, or lapdogs like Ellen, or closet cases. You can be a fucking degenerate piece of shit and as long as you're straight you'll never be out of work. But be openly gay and your career is over.

by Anonymous | reply 132 | September 23, 2020 5:27 PM |
Most of the people here trashing what gay men are writing about this film are not gay--they're hets trying to defend their own beliefs that gay actors should not play gay characters. Sadly, they also believe they cannot play straight either.

R117 I'm sure you loved BBM as well, right? Straight audiences only want stories about gay men if someone dies. If yo think the world has evolved why don't you move to some southern state and see how much it has evolved for gay people.

Whatever dude, keep living your outlandish fantasies of how Hollywood works from you couch in Bumfuck, Idaho. What you claim wasn't real 15 years ago, let alone today, I won't engage with you any further. BBM is artistic relevant, but I don't care about the film or its story. It does have great acting and direction though.
FYI finding a gay boss in development or any artistic side of this business is like finding a needle in a haystack but I'm sure you know that already.

Eeek! Do 60 year old writers get early onset dementia in their 50s? Like this character? I've never heard of that. Maybe ex ball players....
by Anonymous | reply 140 | September 26, 2020 12:53 PM |
Alzheimer's used to refer to dementia with onset before age 65. Yes, people dement at earlier ages and have for decades.

To those who are saying that the 2 lead roles should have been cast with out gay actors - who do you think should have been cast?

My sister was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 50 and was dead before 60. It happens R140.

Tucci and Firth have aged in completely opposite ways. Tucci got uglier with age while Firth got hotter.

Tucci was always... regular looking.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | September 28, 2020 8:06 PM |
Tucci was hot back in the day. As he aged he started to look worse and worse. Firth was ugly when he was younger but has gotten hot as he's aged into his daddy years.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | September 28, 2020 8:58 PM |
Firth has never been my cup of tea but to suggest that he was a minger is a bit much.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | September 28, 2020 9:02 PM |
Tucci is just another short cocky actor with a little muscle. (NYC theatre is full of this guy.) Time has not been kind to him.
And while it's inoffensive, his portrayal of the non-gay/gay character in DEVIL WORE PRADA was hardly some brave new achievement in gay representation. Some on DL give him way too much credit for that.

I agree. Once he hit his fifties he became handsome to me. He's moreso attractive with the beard.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | September 28, 2020 9:21 PM |
Oh yes, Firth was just utterly DISGUSTING when younger.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | September 29, 2020 1:09 AM |
Tucci has always been a character actor--it doesn't matter if he's lost his looks. Firth is more of a leading man---he has no choice but to try his best to hold onto his looks.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | September 29, 2020 2:05 AM |
R148, to do this, no actor has ever come close to playing Mr. Darcy as brilliantly as Colin Firth. He owns that role!
