I just want to see him dance
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 19, 2019 5:09 AM |
Fun fact, the scene of him dancing inside the public bathroom after he murders the Wall Street douches in the subway was not scripted. That was Phoenix himself, and they decided to keep it in the movie.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 19, 2019 5:10 AM |
Prepare yourselves for a glut of pretentious, arthouse-style comic book movies with "something to say."
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 19, 2019 5:12 AM |
It's incredible because, truth be told, it's NOT the Joker. They've conned people into going to what they expect to be a comic book movie and really it's a gritty character study of a man's downward spiral mentally due to a health care system that doesn't work for the poor, an income gap that has an increasingly noxious impact on society, poverty, violence and greed. If you changed the title to "CLOWN" and took out the reference to Thomas Wayne (or just changed the character's name to John Smith), this would never be mistaken for anything to do with Batman or comic books. It's like if Travis Bickel shaved his head completely at the end of TAXI DRIVER and decided to change his name to Lex Luthor and everyone said, "Hey, it's a Superman movie." The box office is baffling. I can't believe it is a result of repeat viewings because after seeing it once I don't know why anyone would want to see it again.

Good chance to make $300 million domestic

R3 better than the cgi cotton candy comedic lowest common denominator superhero films that’s been shoved down everyones throats over the past decade.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 19, 2019 5:25 AM |
Honestly, this ones a masterpiece. Absolutely fantastic and pretty scary.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 19, 2019 5:27 AM |
The audience identifies with Arthur Fleck. All you see is the rich getting richer and nobody gives a shit about other people. We want somebody to rise up and destroy the Thomas Waynes of this world. I don't think it's coincidence that the character is so very reminiscent of Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 19, 2019 5:28 AM |
r11 I'll have to go see it.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 19, 2019 5:30 AM |
Way overrated. People at my showing were laughing at the screen and about 1/4 of the audience (young people) walked out.
My review: meh
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 19, 2019 5:32 AM |
R13 you’re lying.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 19, 2019 5:35 AM |
*Spoiler Alert*
I do think Thomas Wayne was Arthur's real father. He forged those adoption papers, caused Penny's mental breakdown, and had her locked up in Arkham.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 19, 2019 5:36 AM |
R5, it's such a relentless, unremitting downer that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but that's not to say that you won't like it. People's tastes are different. It's well made and it's trying to be another TAXI DRIVER or KING OF COMEDY, but those movies had scripts that were more clever and contained numerous memorable scenes. Joker has one scene involving a dwarf that made the audience I saw it with respond vigorously but other than that it's a real drag. Joaquin does act his ass off but the character is not sympathetic enough or loathesome enough. They needed to embrace one of those ends of the spectrum to really involve us in his fate. NIGHTCRAWLER was a better entry in this genre; it had a mentally ill, sociopath at its center but he was interesting and the script was clever as hell.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 19, 2019 5:37 AM |
Joaquin will win the Oscar. He better, anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 19, 2019 5:39 AM |
Yeah, Nightcrawler is a way more accomplished film than Joker, but Joker does have its strengths, namely Joaquin, the score, and cinematography.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 19, 2019 5:40 AM |
It has an 8.9 on IMDB, that's one of their best scores all time.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 19, 2019 5:42 AM |
R18, Yes, Joaquin does give a highly original performance (physically it's downright bizarre and confounding, remember what he does right before going onstage at DeNiro's show? Weirdly fascinating.) and the cinematography is good. I actually don't have much memory of the score, I'll have to go to YouTube and listen to it again.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 19, 2019 5:47 AM |
[quote]We want somebody to rise up and destroy the Thomas Waynes of this world.
Psst, R11? Thomas Wayne isn't evil (or at least he shouldn't be, he fathered Batman FFS).
I also believe R13 is full of shit. Movie tickets are so expensive nowadays that I doubt hardly anyone "walks out" anymore, regardless of how bad the film is.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 19, 2019 6:04 AM |
In this universe Thomas Wayne is an evil asshole.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 19, 2019 6:10 AM |
Yeah this an alternate universe not set in the dceu, I wonder what dc will do now though? No one will want jared letos joker back and they'll want to see the new batman fight this joker.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 19, 2019 6:14 AM |
And it hasn't opened in China yet!
This is a great film, very disturbing, but so well made and brilliant job by Joaquin. There will be hell to pay if he doesn't win the Oscar!

by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 19, 2019 10:59 AM |
R15 - very possible! In general, the whole thing is left up to the watcher to decide what is real and what is not and there have been so many theories about it.
SPOILER - I was left wondering whether the whole thing was a delusion and he was in the nuthouse the whole time. Is he even really the Joker or was he the inspiration for the joker?
Whatever anyone thinks of it, Joaquin was amazing.

r26 Well that just makes the polices job easier.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 19, 2019 11:01 AM |
I was surprised how much I enjoyed the film. I love the period the film is set in too. Did anyone notices the movie theatre with posters of Blow Out, Arthur and Zorro the Gay Blade? Brought back memories.
I usually find Joaquin Phoenix hard to take but sometimes like in Her & The Sisters Brothers he is simply brilliant and his performance in this is another to add to that list.

I haven't seen it yet but I also thought this might be the way this movie portrays The Joker... Not as a comic book super villain but a portrait of mental illness... That isn't what I would pay money to see... How fucking depressing!

by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 19, 2019 7:28 PM |
Honestly, I can't believe anyone enjoyed this movie. It's apparent popularity is inexplicable to me. The previous poster is right. It's NOT a comic book movie and really has nothing to do with Batman or the character known as The Joker. The few references to that mythology that there are seem tossed in just to fool the comic book geeks into thinking this movie is something that it's not. It worked because they've deluded themselves into thinking it's a great Joker movie. Just goes to show that you can slap a comic book title on anything nowadays and make a fortune off gullible fanboys.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 19, 2019 7:28 PM |

The varied demographics seeing this movie indicates its well beyond a fanboy flick
by Anonymous | reply 54 | October 19, 2019 7:31 PM |
It's a stand alone narrative, with the Batman references kept fairly marginal to the main character's arc. It has a GREAT look to it; every frame is PERFECT, with great music choices as well. Not nearly as violent as I thought it would be.
And of course, Joaquin Phoenix's performance is jaw droppingly, astonishingly INCREDIBLE.
It's a masterpiece.

I’m so glad I know that-
by Anonymous | reply 61 | October 20, 2019 9:31 PM |
Thanks R38. The problem is I was watching too many theories and I began to question it all. There would be no point if it were all delusion in my opinion. Then you get some who say that's the whole point, the Joker was always telling stories about his background so you never really know what is true or not. But yes, I do think you have a point. People are going to speculate and draw up all these interesting theories. And as for Zazie - there was the sound of police sirens after he left her apartment, which people have pointed out. What about the nurse at the end? He left the room and had blood on his shoes?
I enjoyed the score/soundtrack too.

It's not a comic-book action film, it's a comic-inspired psychological film for adults, finally. Not specifically aimed at teens, for a change. Barely has any fights or explosions in it. It's about realistic problems. It's relatable and atmospheric. It's [italic]au courant[/italic] too.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | October 26, 2019 5:44 AM |
It will make $900m at least and aside from last weekend it’s been beating Maleficant 2 throughout the past week. Long shot but it could be a $1b film.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | October 26, 2019 7:38 AM |
Deadline: This was a busy weekend at the international box office with the sophomore session of Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil seeing a 43% drop to lead studio pics at $64.3M in 100% of its offshore footprint. Behind the sorceress, Warner Bros/Village Roadshow/Bron Studios’ Joker continued its laugh-a-minute run to add $47.8M (just 38% off the previous weekend), becoming the No. 3 biggest DC movie ever overseas with $571.5M to date for $849.1M global — where it is also the the top-grossing R-rated movie ever (at current rates) and the first to cross the eight century mark.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | October 27, 2019 7:40 PM |
R73 it’s made $849 million. It will pass $900 easily.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | October 27, 2019 7:45 PM |
Ugh, I’m so sick of hearing about this unoriginal mediocre regurgitated film. I can’t wait for the world to forget about it in a few months when the next new superhero film comes out. Stupid schlock masquerading as something “deep” by repeating social commentary that’s been old since the French Revolution.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | October 27, 2019 7:45 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 78 | October 27, 2019 7:48 PM |
The studio faces a huge dilemma. It said Joker was a stand-alone movie outside of a larger universe and without a sequel. But it would be financially irresponsible not to try to replicate this huge hit into Another vehicle.

well deserved i think
by Anonymous | reply 80 | October 27, 2019 7:51 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 81 | October 27, 2019 7:53 PM |
The people calling this a low-budget indie film are fucking nuts fanboys.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | October 27, 2019 7:56 PM |
R81 everyone remembers Avatar. It was all over the media again throughout Endgames entire run.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | October 27, 2019 7:59 PM |
R83 Because Endgame was slated to become the next highest grossing film of all time. Was it all over the media before that? Or even referenced for any reason other than the money it made? Did anybody ever reference the plot and commentary in the film, or did they just reference the numbers?
Now Endgame is being quickly forgotten as well. Face it, fanboys, your stupid derivative superhero film is going to be as quickly forgotten as its predecessors. Spider-Man: FFH is another film that made a billion. I doubt that’s going to be remembered at all until it’s time for the next billion dollar superhero flick.
Your stupid fucking DC movie isn’t special. It isn’t an art film, it isn’t anything new, and it won’t be remembered. Give it up.

I really loved the film. The Bruce Wayne angle was very compelling and very sad. I am not a comic book person but the Batman/Joker trope is undeniably an eternal font of material for good vs evil musings. More than that though, this is a film about child neglect and abuse, and ties that into a bigger contemplation of how lonely and meaningless life can feel in a world divided sharply into Haves and Have-Notes.
The film explicitly depicts just how psychologically unendurable the resulting feelings of impotence and worthlessness can be when you have gone for so long with profound unmet emotional needs.
It seriously touched something deep in me, because I could not stop crying for a half-hour after the movie ended.
Joaquin was beyond amazing and I really hope he wins an Oscar for this role.

At the rate it is going and all the shitty films out right now, easily a billion. I always check the local theatres to see if Joker is sold out and even now, a month later. Most of the smaller theatres they are playing in are 80 to 90% sold out.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | November 3, 2019 4:18 PM |
R98 Thankfully no, because up until now The Oscars had the common sense to ignore shitty comic book movies and the ability to separate a movie made for money from a movie made for art. Here’s hoping they don’t stoop any lower than they already have by “honoring” this schlock and proving to us once and for all that The Academy really is dead and that the studios control it all.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | November 3, 2019 4:27 PM |
