This is so true! Identity politics, political correctness, and what the always hysterical Twitter mob says, etc., have killed legitimate cinema and television criticism and proper/objective appraisal of art and its merit (or lack of)...
Almost every “review” now reads like a paper for a Gender Studies class.
Most modern “critics” seem like they’d rather focus on the portrayal of women and how many people of color or disability were “represented” in a particular film (and whether a female or person or color directed the movie) than about how good (or bad) the actual cinematography, directing, writing, storyline, and performances were...
It’s a sad and weird time for writing and film critics; the days of critics like Siskel, Ebert, and Pauline Kael seem to be over (and not in a good way).

A critic who is driven primarily by their politics, who is blinded by their own sense of moral superiority, or who cannot temporarily surrender to the worldview of their subject, can barely be said to be a critic at all.
