Disgraceful: New York City Council to Spend $11 Billion for Four NEW Jails With No Guarantee of Closing Rikers

Absolutely shameful. It's sad that there wasn't more opposition to this before it passed. Hopefully, it will be challenged in court.

I imagine Rikers would be a good deterrent to prevent crime. Hopefully the new jails won't be other than unpleasant.

They can close Rikers AFTER Trump and his family finish their stint there, around 2050.

by Anonymousreply 2October 17, 2019 10:03 PM

Does it need to be closed?

by Anonymousreply 3October 17, 2019 10:23 PM

Please don;'t close RIkers.

Oh for fucks sake, DeBlasio: just put them up at the Plaza. And let them loose when they are ready to say they’re sorry. It’ll probably cost us less.

by Anonymousreply 5October 17, 2019 10:48 PM

This is the same shit he’s doing with the public schools.

They suck because they’re full of apathetic miscreants. So we have to bend over backwards to rearrange everything and make everyone else suffer. Instead of actually addressing the real issue.

Typical DeBlasio.

$11 billion, to start. Once the construction management teams and the unions get done with them, the price tag will be closer to $30 billion.

by Anonymousreply 7October 17, 2019 10:53 PM

And I bet a lot of those dollars will be joining their brethren in Chirlane’s offshore account.

*looks around for the missing money*

Well, the bleeding heart may not be as bloody as he pretends. The sole holdout against solitary confinement... buh-byeee.

R9 That's what I can't understand about most of the posters here. De Blasio is [bold] NOT [/bold] a bleeding heart liberal or a communist. He is, in fact, a corrupt plutocrat who is using this jail plan as an excuse to give his real estate donors money to build new jails while only pretending to close rikers (which can be overturned by the next mayor). Hopefully this sham is held up in court so that it never sees the light of day.
