Every October, I always watch all the Friday the 13th movies. They are classics. What are your favorites?

I've seen every horror movie 100 times. There is a new movie that was released about three weeks ago online that is pretty good: Haunt.

The Wicker Man (the original, like I have to say that...)
The Stepfather (So happy Shelly Hack got her Oscar for this.)
Dead Ringers
The cheesily delicious Motel Hell
The sequel to The Omen. I like the original of course, but the sequel holds it's own.
The Hitcher

Well, I enjoy particularly gruesome entertainment so I watch "The Mirror Has Two Faces" or a recent Adam Sandler comedy.
If you can stomach it, might I recommend Mike Meyer's Cat in the Hat or The Love Guru.
Not for the faint of heart.

R21 meant Halloween, Halloween 2, Halloween H20 and Halloween 2018.
She also neglected Friday the 13ths 5-7.
But Elm Streets 1,3 & 7 own all of her pucks, so why not just watch Freddy?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 18, 2019 4:23 AM |
Ugh, no I didn't R24. Friday 5-7 suck. Halloween III and 4 are great. NOES is overrated.

The classic, original Night of the Living Dead.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 18, 2019 12:51 PM |
R8, I agree. I saw Haunt just the other day and thought it was a solid horror flick. It has a 6.3 rating on IMDB (the reason I gave it a watch). It's weird because I never saw any previews or anything for it. As for my go-to horror films to put me in the Halloween mood, The Strangers (don't even consider watching the lame sequel) and The Others work for me.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 18, 2019 12:53 PM |
Haunt was written and directed by the guys who wrote The Quiet Place, so there is some measure of talent behind this. I don't remember any jump scares in the movie. It really is good, if you are looking for a new scary movie.

Are they still doing this? Ridiculous. I thought that after Walking Dead with all its gore they would stop the editing.

Halloweens 3 & 4 are two of the WORST MOVIES EVER MADE, let alone horror movies, let alone the Halloween series.
Nobody agrees with you. The overwhelming consensus is that those movies suck, especially the craptacular shit sandwich that was Halloween 3, which has nothing to do with Michael Myers.
In case OP is different from r21 and in danger of wasting precious microseconds on Halloweens 3 & 4, take note of how the critics decimated them.
You might get a couple of unintentional laughs from the telebeam kills of the mother and trick or treaters in Halloween 3. But that's all.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 18, 2019 4:57 PM |
Viewing a horror film without profanity and gore is like watching porn without penetration and money shots.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 18, 2019 4:57 PM |
I agree that Halloween 3 sucks but Halloween 4? I thought 4 and 5 were a good way to reboot/sequel-ize the original movies without Jamie Lee Curtis.
Halloween 3 and 6 are by far my least favorites.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 18, 2019 5:01 PM |
I got suckered into watching Halloween 3 again last year. I thought it was dreck when it came out but I kept seeing people on line trying to rehab its reputation so I thought, "Why not?". What garbage. So amateurishly made it's cringe-inducing.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 18, 2019 5:48 PM |
A bunch of new horror movies just hit the streaming services. Most are garbage but there's one starring Omar Epps that's decent: Trick. It feels too long and I kept looking at the time remaining on it but like I said, decent.

If you want a solid, scary found footage film, check out He’ll House LLC. It’s steaming on Shudder, which you can access thru Amazon Prime. It’s super low budget, but as a horror fan, I found it incredibly well done. It’s got two sequels (it was written as a trilogy). The sequels are somewhat diminishing returns, but I’d definitely suggest watching all three of them.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 18, 2019 7:54 PM |
I was just about to recommend 'Hell House LLC', R38. I'm glad someone else thought to mention it.

I'll third the recommendation for Hell House LLC for those who like - or at least don't mind - found footage. The original is one of the best in that genre, in my opinion - very scary and well acted with decent character development besides. The sequels are OK if you've seen the original because the underlying story arc is interesting. Don't watch the sequels if you haven't seen the original. In my opinion, they don't stand on their own.

"The Innocents" with Deborah Kerr, based on Henry James's "Turn of the Screw".
"The House on Haunted Hill" with Peter Gallagher got poor reviews but I like it.

JFC R32, calm down! Halloween III & 4 the worse movies ever made? Hardly. And thanks for providing no reasoning of your own as to why you think they are. Did you even see Halloween III? No mother or trick or treaters get killed.
Halloween III has developed a following over the years and is actually very creepy. Clueless as to why the hate as it's a DLers wet dream of getting rid of all the crotchfruit on earth. And Halloween 4 is highly regarded by fans for its atmosphere and Ellie Cornell's character and Danielle Harris' acting. Fuck the critics and fuck you R32.

Yes it is and the ending is very surprising. It's a much more thought provoking movie than your average horror film. Is the governess really seeing ghosts or is she losing her mind? Do the children know about the ghosts, and so on.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 19, 2019 2:27 AM |
R47 is lying, guys.
Here are all the kills from cinematic garbage Halloween 3. Notice how the mother and trick-or-treaters melt or get blown apart by telebeams , then creatures crawl out of their remains. RIDICULOUSLY FUNNY.
You have no reason to sit through Halloween 3 after this video.

I should have added this when I commented before. Here's a recommendation for 'Train to Busan'. 2016, Korean, subtitled but that's not a distraction after things kick off. Super well done zombie flick. It never lets up.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | October 24, 2019 5:43 PM |
Terrifier is disgusting, with one murder where the maniac suspends a woman upside down and saws her in half starting at the vagina.

I never liked any of those.Too scary. I like monster movies like Sci-Fi stuff from the 50's. and good ones from more recent years. War of the Worlds. Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The Alien series. Predator. I like the old classic Frankenstein and Wolfman movies. And the Dracula ones. Even the Gary Oldman one.But my favorite Dracula was Frank Langella. Sohot.Of course Bela was the absolute best. And The Mummy. The old versions. Then there were the Outer space alien invasion movies from the 50's. Giant ants, etc. Hilarious.

I love the ORIGINAL Night of the Demons, Dawn of the Dead, and Black Christmas.
I also LOVE Return of the Living Dead and most recently, the Final Destination Series.
One cheesy but endearing movie I saw as a kid was THE UNBORN. Brooke Adams, a brunette Lisa Kudrow, and an almost unrecognizable Kathy Griffin.
I'm so stoked I found I like I can watch it for FREE!

Hell House, LLC is terrifying and this is coming from someone who hates found footage movies. This one is really unsettling and got under my skin.
Can't go wrong with Halloween, Carrie, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Creepshow, Trick 'r Treat, Alice Sweet Alice, Dressed to Kill, Sleepaway Camp, The Witches, Dolls, Suspiria, House of Wax, Tourist Trap, Messiah of Evil, Night of the Living Dead, Prom Night, When A Stranger Calls Back, The Fog, Carnival of Souls, House on Haunted Hill, Scream, The Fly, Friday the 13th...these usually make my list around this time of year.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | October 24, 2019 7:22 PM |
A fun film with very Halloween-y atmosphere is "Hell Night" with Linda Blair. I love the film's kitschy look, which feels almost like it was filmed in a haunted house attraction at some amusement park. It's just too bad the film is at least 20 minutes too long.

What's the verdict on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark? It's online now.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | October 26, 2019 5:37 PM |
Scary Stories is a boring children’s film with unremarkable action and characters. Creepshow 2019 is better if you want tame stuff.
But I think Hell Night is mediocre and not very scary. And the Final Destinations are static snuff films. So I’m at odds with basic bitches on this thread.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | October 26, 2019 11:05 PM |
I started watching Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark right after I posted that, gave up after 25 minutes.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | October 26, 2019 11:18 PM |
Scary Stories is well shot and I thought the creature designs were eerily similar to the illustrations, which surprised me, but the story was unremarkable and there was some distractingly goofy CGI like in the recent It movies that took me out of it too often to ever feel any real tension or threat.

V/H/S is a solid, disturbing found footage movie, if you ignore the interstitials. Starry Eyes is also disturbing in the body horror genre.
[REC] is a terrific zombie movie (like Train to Busan).

The Snowtown Murders

Yes, r91.
Elm Street 1 to Elm Street 3 is a flash forward six years, not true to the production years.
Just like Friday the 13th 4 to 5 was a flash forward several years for the Tommy Jarvis character, despite just a year between Corey Feldman and John Shepherd.

I forgot about the time jump in F13, I don't even think I've seen all the films still. The poster for Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday frightened me when I was younger and I never got around to watching it. To be fair, it sounds dreadful, but that's never stopped me from watching a horror film.

Friday the 13th are classic horror movies.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | October 31, 2019 3:49 AM |
Start with the original, 1980 FRIDAY THE 13TH. Watch the successive one every Halloween or something. It IS a show where you're better off knowing what happened before; they often take off immediately where the prior one left off, like HALLOWEEN to its sequel.
But they do that thing with lengthy summaries of previous episodes at the start of each movie — something that many sequels in the '70s and '80s did if you feel like jumping around. Just know the very best F13s are 1-4 & Part 6 JASON LIVES. The very scariest, most realistic entries are 1-4.

ELM STREET 2 is one of the worst and most hated ELM STREETS.
But it's notable for being a gay metaphor, having "the First Scream King," having an now-openly gay lead actor and some campy moments that are funny. You may want to watch it for that.
The actually good and scary ELM STREETS are 1, 3 and 7.

R115 Honestly, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (Part 6) is soooooo much worse than Part 2. I think Part 2 has a certain charm to it! Freddy was still menacing and scary, if you will. Part 3 grounded the series again. I can't decide which film in the series was worse, Dream Child (Part 5) or Freddy's Dead.

"Ringu is better than The Ring.
Let the Right One In is better than Let Me In."
I agree with the second statement, but not the first. Too much of J-horror is poorly acted and the storytelling is choppy. THE RING is a much better movie IMO.
That said, JU-ON is better than the remake THE GRUDGE.

I watched "Hell House LLC" and "Haunt" last night.
The first one was awesome and deserves all the praise it's getting on DL horror threads. I guess the big climax was a bit of a letdown but the rest of the film was great. There's one particular scene (where one of the characters wakes up and finds something in his bedroom) that was scary as fuck.
I was less impressed by "Haunt". It starts off well enough but then quickly goes downhill and feels super long even at just 90 minutes. I'm yet to see a good horror film with Eli Roth's name attached to it.

Hell House, LLC is the real deal. I watched it earlier this week and almost felt like I needed to sleep with the lights on. I don't think a movie has done that to me since I was a kid. Found footage movies are usually awful, but the people behind this one must know what they're doing.

I mean, the fucking creepy clowns that moved around the house probably had something to do with that...

Second (or third) all of the positive reviews for Hell House LLC. Saw it a few years ago and was quite impressed. It does a lot with a little. Not interested in the sequels. I'm a hardcore horror fan and it's hard to impress me so it's refreshing to find a good horror gem. Saw Haunt last night - it wasn't bad. Kept me interested and entertained me - that's all I ask.

The Unfriended movies are decent.

Yeah I thought I friended would be dumb as hell but it was okay. Not amazing but enjoyable enough.

Whoever told me to watch Hell House, LLC and V/H/S:
FUCK YOU.
Those movies are 10th-rate Blair Witch ripoffs. The cheapest thrills I've ever seen. I've been more scared by neighborhood Halloween decorations — which is the level of production values we're talking about.
DO NOT WATCH or you will die of boredom 7 minutes later!

I watched The Ring (US version) yesterday and i had trouble taking it seriously. I don't know if Scary Movie 3 ruined it for me lol. But i found all of the characters annoying. And the dialogue was cringey.

Nah, The RIng is a masterpiece. Scared the hell out of me.

R131 probably would have if i'd watched it when it came out. The Grudge scared the hell out of me.....still does.

I really like The Grudge too.

I never saw The Ring in theaters because I thought the premise sounded dumb. Several years later I saw the DVD in the $1 bin at a video store in Kenmore Square and thought, why not? I ended up barricading myself in my room that night. There were a couple of scenes where I had to mute it and look away (when the ex boyfriend gets murdered) -- I didn't watch those scenes with sound for years.
