Isn't it a masterpiece?
I dare you to come up with something scarier sounding.

Mancini.
Theme from "Experiment In Terror."

It's iconic.

It's easy to picture a pleasant ballet performance to all of this music. The music is "scary" because of the visuals. There's nothing inherently scary about a sound.
Did you really not know that? How old are you?

Yes R8. I can just imagine Baryshnikov plie-ing to the wonderful sounds of John Carpenter.

I find Howard Shore's score for Scanners much more unsettling.

As ridiculous as the movie JAWS is, the music still gets to me. I recently rewatched it & as soon as I heard that music I started looking over my shoulder, as if expecting a Great White to come cruising through the living room to attack me.
After the movies release, a lot of kids couldn't splash in an ocean, lake, pool or bathtub without hearing that shark music playing in their little heads.

Please elaborate as how Jaws is "ridiculous."

R11 I hope you don't live in Australia.

The score from The Exorcist. Particularly the music playing when Karras sees Regan's "Help Me" message.

R12 - The stupid looking shark, the colorful/possibly retarded locals, Quint, the fearless shark hunter, taking on the monster with a rickety boat & a fishing pole, the shark passing up two tasty little boys (the shark fin pranksters) to enter the pond to fuck with Chief Brody's kid..... It's just like every other slasher film. The killer is everywhere, day or night & he's hard to catch & kill. Instead of a knife wielding madman, it's a seemingly clever shark. It terrified me as a kid, but now...not so much. It was groundbreaking & scary in the 70's, but now I find it a bit silly. Sorry.
Still loved Scheider, Dreyfuss & Shaw though.

I'll take that challenge, OP. It doesn't get much creepier than this.

R19, if you think the shark looks stupid in the first Jaws, I'd love to hear what you think of the Jaws 3-D one.

Bernard Herrmann, Psycho, WINS EVERY THREAD LIKE THIS.

Ever hear any Crumb, Penderecki, etc...?
