by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 16, 2019 2:48 AM |
aww Amy bringing up for the 10000th time she was friends with McCain pulling that centrist heart string
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 16, 2019 2:48 AM |
John McCain was the Hamburglar.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 16, 2019 2:49 AM |
There was that Abscam thing, r4. But now I'm being Joe Biden OOOOLLLLLDDDDD.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 16, 2019 2:50 AM |
It's called "civility," darlings.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 16, 2019 2:50 AM |
Her career, R2?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 16, 2019 2:50 AM |
You can't see Deplorables? You're Fired!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 16, 2019 2:50 AM |
Bernie should respond to this question by talking about Hillary.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 16, 2019 2:51 AM |
Jimmy Durante vibes from this billionaire
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 16, 2019 2:51 AM |
Warren has great skin but she also botoxes at least her forehead. You can see her forehead doesn't move and her eyebrows are pressed a bit lower than normal. When she makes an exasperated face you can really notice the eyebrows
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 16, 2019 2:51 AM |
what are you on about Beto. Could everyone just break into People Who Need People if you have no actual answer?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 16, 2019 2:52 AM |
Beto is sexy
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 16, 2019 2:52 AM |
But what products does Liz use?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 16, 2019 2:52 AM |
Moderates ruled the night.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 16, 2019 2:52 AM |
Beto is getting the 3rd longest airtime after Warren and Pete. Fuck yeah!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 16, 2019 2:52 AM |
actually I renounce my comment, Beto has a great answer
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 16, 2019 2:52 AM |
What the hell, Beto telling some story about an epic road trip he took?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 16, 2019 2:53 AM |
[quote]Beto would make an EXCELLENT Senator. Why in the hell didn’t he do that instead. What a pointless loss.
Because the Senate seat that's in play is John Cornyn's. He is more well-liked than Ted Cruz, who everybody hates, even Republicans.
If Beto couldn't win against Ted Cruz, the thinking is he will not have an easy time against Cornyn. And the Dems have recruited a strong candidate already, a female veteran. Not a good look for Beto to swoop in and edge her out.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 16, 2019 2:53 AM |
And I was that little George Bush
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 16, 2019 2:53 AM |
Pete looking very Presidential.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 16, 2019 2:53 AM |
Tom Steyer is going to buy CNN so he can get more air time in the next debate.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 16, 2019 2:53 AM |
I bet Pete will talk about his close friendship with his former governor!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 16, 2019 2:53 AM |
Corey goes to Bible study classes?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 16, 2019 2:53 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
How many times is Booker going to come out as a vegan?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
Inhofe's Bible study - as STRAIGHT as it gets!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
"Candidates, if you were a Real Housewife, what would your tagline be?"
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
As fuck, R14. Would suck him dry.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
Good closing from Booker though. Otherwise he wasn't great.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
Lawrence O'Donnell is going to read CNN for filth again about some question and moderating choices
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
[quote]Beto is getting the 3rd longest airtime after Warren and Pete. Fuck yeah!
Only because Pete hate fucked him.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
Bible study w/Imhofe? I wonder if this is true.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
That's right Booker, just one openly gay man on the stage.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
I am very close friends with a heterosexual woman!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
Why are these 1% ers like pock skin getting so much time?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
M Pence. Is that Mike or Mother?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 16, 2019 2:54 AM |
Kinda over this Booker's youth pastor schtick.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 16, 2019 2:55 AM |
Does Beto know that many gay men wasn't him badly?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 16, 2019 2:55 AM |
Yang's awesome. 👍
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 16, 2019 2:55 AM |
God help Biden remember his web address.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 16, 2019 2:55 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 16, 2019 2:58 AM |
Your most surprising friendship should be with yourself.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | October 16, 2019 2:58 AM |
E52 A lot different from how he looks on his commercials, isn’t it?

by Anonymous | reply 63 | October 16, 2019 2:58 AM |
Kamala is a good fighter but she is not inspiring. She is like that pissed off neighbor who will help you fight to get your money back from Wallmart but not someone you really want to hang out with.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | October 16, 2019 2:59 AM |
What happened to Tulsi? Did Elizabeth throw a glass of water out of her and did she melt?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | October 16, 2019 2:59 AM |
Tom Steyer is only 62, he looks much better in his commercials.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | October 16, 2019 2:59 AM |
Jesus Christ on a crutch, Kams.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | October 16, 2019 2:59 AM |
R53, well that'll guarantee him another six or seven votes.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | October 16, 2019 2:59 AM |
Are Beto's and ripped and defined?
by Anonymous | reply 69 | October 16, 2019 2:59 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 72 | October 16, 2019 2:59 AM |
Kam will bring us all together, but first she needs to get herself some identity politics.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | October 16, 2019 3:00 AM |
R70, what's surprising about that?
by Anonymous | reply 74 | October 16, 2019 3:00 AM |
AOC's endorsement means one thing: Warren bombed.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | October 16, 2019 3:00 AM |
I know Pete. Seriously, nobody specific from that military that never ever cares about anything but getting the job done? Nobody, ya know, specific? Nobody who isn't out of central casting from some war movie?
by Anonymous | reply 76 | October 16, 2019 3:01 AM |
R62 yeah Rhodes Scholars are dumb...
by Anonymous | reply 77 | October 16, 2019 3:01 AM |
Another vote for John McCain as bff? Fuck off with that, Amy and Bernie.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | October 16, 2019 3:01 AM |
R71 has that Russian Not thing DOWN!
by Anonymous | reply 79 | October 16, 2019 3:01 AM |
[quote]AOC just endorsed Bernie, shocking!
Cause her endorsement was ever so helpful during the midterms.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | October 16, 2019 3:01 AM |
Right R66. He only looks 75 in his commercials.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | October 16, 2019 3:01 AM |
He did seem to be implying that the other soldiers knew he was gay at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | October 16, 2019 3:02 AM |
Rev. Booker needs to can it.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | October 16, 2019 3:02 AM |
AOC played this like a pro.
She never left Bernie’s side.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | October 16, 2019 3:02 AM |
McCain is dead.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | October 16, 2019 3:02 AM |
Here comes Joe with a tale from the Coolidge administration
by Anonymous | reply 86 | October 16, 2019 3:02 AM |
[quote]AOC's endorsement means one thing: Warren bombed.
Another narrative problem for the DL fav.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | October 16, 2019 3:02 AM |
Booker is such a phony, I can't stand his BS.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | October 16, 2019 3:03 AM |
Warren's answer is pretty good.

by Anonymous | reply 93 | October 16, 2019 3:03 AM |
Bernie cult.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | October 16, 2019 3:04 AM |
so seriously, just six next time, mkay Dem Party: Warren, Bernie, Biden, Kamala, Pete, and yeah, she kind of earned it tonight, Amy. I'd like Yang too, only because he actually is outside the norm and is thinking seriously about the future economy and not just sleepwalking into some new 1950s fantasy economy.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | October 16, 2019 3:04 AM |
Pretty much everyone stuck the landing.
Well, there's still Biden...
by Anonymous | reply 96 | October 16, 2019 3:04 AM |
this was a stupid last question
by Anonymous | reply 97 | October 16, 2019 3:04 AM |
Liz Warren's 3 brothers are Republicans because they're Liz Warren's brothers.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | October 16, 2019 3:04 AM |
Bernie can rise too fast or he will get light headed and ....splat. Done.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | October 16, 2019 3:04 AM |

Nice finish by Biden.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | October 16, 2019 3:06 AM |
He's shouting now for some reason.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | October 16, 2019 3:06 AM |
Why's Joe all shouty?
by Anonymous | reply 109 | October 16, 2019 3:06 AM |
Next I only want Bernie, Liz, Amy and Pete.
They cover the Democratic spectrum we need to get behind, from Social Democrat to Conservative Democrat, and all shades in between.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | October 16, 2019 3:06 AM |
Did Tulsi get to say who her friend was? I missed it.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | October 16, 2019 3:06 AM |
Joe woke up in the debate's last two seconds.

Megan McCain has been rushed to the emergency room, Apparently, she masturbated herself bloody after hearing all the references to her Lord on High, ,John McCain. She flicked her bean clear off!
by Anonymous | reply 114 | October 16, 2019 3:06 AM |
I was hoping they would all start singing The Golden Girls theme together and Anderson's career would be over.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | October 16, 2019 3:06 AM |
If nobody won then Warren won. Slow and steady rise to the top.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | October 16, 2019 3:06 AM |
Bernie is the Hillary of this election cycle. Needs to bow out.

MSNBC says Mayor Pete had a stellar night.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | October 16, 2019 3:08 AM |
John McCain's daughter will be basking in the glory tomorrow, ugh.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | October 16, 2019 3:08 AM |
I blame Anderson for the "Miss America Finale Question."
It's like he know of DL obsession with Beto who had the most on-point answer, so he threw him a boner.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | October 16, 2019 3:08 AM |
Biden is clearly FUBAR.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | October 16, 2019 3:08 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 127 | October 16, 2019 3:08 AM |
Warren most definitely did not win tonight. Tonight was about Pete and Amy.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | October 16, 2019 3:08 AM |
I predict little to no difference in polling. At most, maybe Bernie and Liz will be neck and neck again.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | October 16, 2019 3:08 AM |

Oh I see the joke now
by Anonymous | reply 134 | October 16, 2019 3:10 AM |
Warren and Bernie are going to need to come up with answers on how to pay for their freebies by the next debate. That will be the next attack point by more than just Biden and Pete.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | October 16, 2019 3:11 AM |
Warren botoxes her forehead. It's obvious but it's well done. She doesn't look crazy or plastic
by Anonymous | reply 136 | October 16, 2019 3:11 AM |
The biggest loser was Biden.
Biggest winner was Bernie. He looks healthy and and strong.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | October 16, 2019 3:11 AM |
Amy's going from 2% to 10% overnight.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | October 16, 2019 3:11 AM |
Oh Pete, you been out of the closet for only four years! Get over yourself as some gay ambassador.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | October 16, 2019 3:12 AM |
Wow, CNN naming Pete the winner!
by Anonymous | reply 140 | October 16, 2019 3:12 AM |
Pete is now second in the race.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | October 16, 2019 3:12 AM |
CNN likes Pete, it's just the liberals on Twitter that hate seeing him fail their purity tests.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | October 16, 2019 3:12 AM |
Tom Steyer should give the money he will spend on a losing campaign to Alex and friends at St. Jude. It's Christmas commercial time again.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | October 16, 2019 3:12 AM |
CNN thinks Pete stole the show.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | October 16, 2019 3:12 AM |
Pete did well. He's still got that solid C.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | October 16, 2019 3:13 AM |

r151 He wants some of that alpha magic. 😏
by Anonymous | reply 156 | October 16, 2019 3:16 AM |
predict no big change in polls. Pete maybe up a little. Amy maybe up a little. Top three still very much dominant. Not the PollTroll, but I'm not sure he makes predictions anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | October 16, 2019 3:16 AM |
Pete did good tonight. Watch his polls rise. I wouldn't place much importance on twitter. That's just all of the supporters of other candidates coming to bash him because he kicked ass.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | October 16, 2019 3:16 AM |
I hope I look as good as Liz when I'm her age and even more than her looks I hope I have her energy. She is a powerhouse. She is someone I'd love to have as an aunt but I'd love her even more as my president. I would be so proud to call her Madame President. I have never once put the word President together with Cheeto. He is not my president. He isn't anyone's. He is an illegitimate president. We all know Hillary was the winner and while I voted for her I could not stand Hillary but she still was the real winner. I'm not even talking about the 3 million more popular votes but the cheating Russia did to make her lose the EC. And the Facebook and Twitter cheating Russia did to make those few who really voted for Cheeto vote for him.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | October 16, 2019 3:16 AM |
Ew. Not a Tlaib fan. Bad endorsement.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | October 16, 2019 3:16 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 164 | October 16, 2019 3:18 AM |

Is Pete's private jet ready for the flight to LA?
by Anonymous | reply 173 | October 16, 2019 3:20 AM |
Can Buttigieg be the alpha dog? What a fucking homophobic statement from the talking heads. He served in the military, he is literally trained to kill. None of you have done anything close to that. Neither has Trump by the way. But you are not sure about his alpha quality? Really? It Trump live Tweeting in your ear piece?
by Anonymous | reply 174 | October 16, 2019 3:21 AM |

Some of you really think that we’re not at the brink of a true revolution, even as we sit at the precipice facing impending climate change, record levels of poverty and violence - for the 99%, of course - and dwindling nutritional and life-sustaining resources.
😂 Ok.

Pete is was on fire tonight, so sharp and quick on his feet. We need that kind of youthful energy and intelect in the White house, not an 80 old dreamer with heart conditions. And I am saying that as an elder gay.

Trained to kill? He was an intelligence officer, not in combat. He just comes off as a gay guy who is touchy that someone dare question his masculinity and frankly many people will be turned off by that.

R191 But then his ending bit sounded too careful... and in that care, sounded fake. And he has made absolutely no progress with voters of color. He's a work in progress... he needs to be looser, more assertive in easier sound bites. He needs to learn to make the sound bites seem like he just thought of them. He needs to let the Alpha out, but stay "sweet"... again, Dem turnout will beat Trump. Black folk won't turn out for him. I'd like to propose a Pete-MIchele ticket.

Biden did just fine, no major screw-ups and he correctly, if gently, asked Sanders and Warren how they are going to pay for all the freebies. He needs to be more direct about it.
That last question was a waste of time and they all had a canned response, it was so obvious.
They need to start cutting off their microphones when their time is up, its very rude and non-presidential to keep rambling on - Tulsi, Pete, and Kamal Toe.

Pete came out of the closet only four years ago. He needs to get over himself. People are more tired of his performative masculinity than you think. And again, he was not in combat, so he doesn't understand anything. Just another thing to pad his resume.

I’m horrified to even believe this privately, but I can’t imagine a scenario in which Trump loses reelection. Nicole Wallace just asked Warren again and she keeps dodging before going to her general stance of she wants everyone to have coverage then she brings up examples of people who have conditions that weren't covered and how the insurance companies are making big profit.
This could get her through the primary but I'm not sure how it will play in the general. I will vote for whoever the Dem nom is but I'm scared the moderates will be turned off by her healthcare and taxes vs. costs stance. The repubs are sooooo good at vilifying Democrats and scaring the public with hyperbolic messaging

Amy just wouldn't leave her message track for one goddamned answer. Most of the candidates wouldn't, but she was by far the worst. "Yes, climate change is a problem and as president I will work to bring jobs back to Ohio and I'm the only candidate who can win the Midwest." STFU and answer the goddamned question already.
I also hate her face.
I think the only candidate who gave genuine answers to every question asked was Yang. Booker somewhat, and Pete a bit too.
The final friendship question was the worst for this. Castro didn't even answer the question, instead giving a precanned response about something else.

I'm through with debates. I no longer view them as a source of information. They're just all about strategy and who can best who. This is spurred on by the media that is looking for those action moments of which they can loop for ratings. 12 minutes isn't enough time to get to know a candidate and their positions.
They ALL did pretty good. I love Warren's energy but I just don't think she can do what she wants to do. I love Kamala but I'm not seeing her as POTUS. However, I would LOVE for to be the US Attorney General. Bernie needs to be put out to pasture. We're not at the French Revolution point... yet. It's really time for Corey Booker to drop out. On and on...
But, Joe Biden... He moves a bit slower. He stumbles over some words. But, you can see that he thinks. He reflects before he speaks. He calms me. I'm not expecting or looking for anything dramatic. I just want us to be put back on the path that we were on when Obama was president. I just want to be able to sleep calmly at night.

She's referring to the cost to of health care insurance.
She frames it that way because the average (employed) American will pay more in taxes directed to health care than they currently pay in their share of health care insurance -- but it will be less than the total cost of insurance, which is currently paid mostly by employers.
It will be a boon for people with high uncovered medical expenses and it's where America needs to go -- but it will be a hard sell for Joe Public, especially once the Republican scaremongering kicks in.

This whole “let’s go big to energize people” ignores American political history. Energizing has only worked when coupled with moderation and, unfortunately, triangulation . Even if Warren or Sanders won, they would face an uncooperative Senate in 2021 and likely a Republican House and Senate in 2023 and beyond. I don’t want a moderate for their exact policy positions, I want one so they can get ejected and achieve something more than moral purity.
by Anonymous | reply 366 | October 16, 2019 1:40 PM |
Honey, a Republican senate is not going to work with a Democratic President. It doesn't matter how moderate or liberal they are r366.
The cold truth no matter who gets elected these sweeping policy proposals aren't going to happen unless the Dems manage to win the senate also. But either way getting Trump out of the White House alone is a huge win.
by Anonymous | reply 367 | October 16, 2019 1:44 PM |
r366 Nailed it. Energising will work once the cancer of Electoral College is abolished. Until then, those Obama voters who switched to Trump or those moderates who stayed at home, both in crucial swing states, need something other than energising with sweeping policies.
But sure, go right ahead and energise... you'll energise yourself right into another popular vote win / EC loss.
by Anonymous | reply 368 | October 16, 2019 1:47 PM |
Both Democrats and Republicans were energized in 2018. Democrats ended up with a +7 blue wave. If we see that again in 2020, and the indications today are that we will, Trump will lose.
It's pretty simple: when Democrats are energized, when they turn out, they win.

by Anonymous | reply 373 | October 16, 2019 1:55 PM |
I didn't say it was going to be easy and I'm not discounting Republican enthusiasm, R371. I'm just pointing out that they were enthusiastic in 2018, too, and Democrats still won.
Trump is down to his base right now, in the upper 30s to low 40s, overall, and he will not be pivoting. He's already made it very clear that he will be doubling down on the whining and the attacks. And he and his base will be egging each other on in those endless rallies he's been holding, and will continue to hold, resulting in a vicious cycle, where he needs to go even farther out into the wilds to get his applause fix.
He needs another 6 to 10 percent of the voters in order to win in 2020. Where will he get them? Even a high turnout from his base won't be enough.
by Anonymous | reply 374 | October 16, 2019 1:56 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 375 | October 16, 2019 1:58 PM |
Yeah, actually it was, as Republicans acknowledged, R375. It was a mid-term election, one that Republicans traditionally do much, much better in than Democrats do, and it was a referendum on Trump. Democrats are energized, more so than they have ever been in my lifetime. And Trump's "strongly disapprove" numbers are at historically high levels, with the most recent poll showing half the country strongly disapproving of Trump.
Again, I'm not saying it will be a walk in the park or that we will not have to fight for every vote, but right now, Democratic chances look good.

Warren's easy ride just ended. Rivals and media will now ruthlessly push the challenge of a plain answer. Nothing indicates Warren is ready (or able) to give it. That will harm perception of her. It's a problem. So is the pivoting. She's good at it in that she's fearless and comfortable with the tactic.. she's also obvious about it... it will begin to work against her if she appears to be avoiding the big question... which she is.

[quote] Other candidates, meanwhile, shifted their strategies in the wake of the new political circumstances. Buttigieg was newly combative, displaying a strategy of attacking the more progressive wing of the party that he had debuted in a series of left-punching statements made in the days before the debate. He criticized Warren on her wealth tax and on Medicare for All, which he deemed impossible; he criticized the former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke for his call to institute a nationwide buy back for automatic weapons, a prospect that Buttigieg deemed a “shiny object”. The message was that better things are not possible, and that Democrats, and Americans more broadly, must lower their hopes. It was hardly an inspiring assertion, especially considering that Buttigieg delivered it with sneering condescension, apparently impressed with his own callous brand of pragmatism. The combination of cynicism, contempt, and Buttigieg’s extreme youth was disquieting. The South Bend mayor’s debate performance conjured the image of a character in a dark teen drama, an ambitious prep school debate captain who would throw his best friend under the bus in order to secure his own admission to Princeton. In reality, Buttigieg graduated from Harvard.

by Anonymous | reply 397 | October 16, 2019 4:03 PM |
This is the beginning of Warren's fall. You could see how the CNN panel which was once so impressed with her was exasperated with her lack of candor on the Medicare for all funding question. The more she repeatedly employs the same pivoting schtick, the more she comes off as slippery and dishonest.
She had a very easy ride for awhile which in part helped lead to her ascension, but that's over now. Her style of completely avoiding answering questions and instead delivering a rehearsed answer beginning with a "So look, this is how I see it" generalization and then telling a folksy story about some random person she met is now getting noticed and called out, along with her arrogant stance that only she has the right "bold" ideas.
I saw her post interviews on both CNN and MSNBC and she repeated herself VERBATIM both times using the exact words and phrasing she did in the debate. The other candidates did not do that- while they may have made similar general points they came off as natural, not like some sort of phony rehearsed, evasive bot.
Several pundits also called out her petty ungraciousness towards Biden, when she intentionally refused to acknowledge his significant help in getting her bill passed, pointedly mentioning Obama instead, and worst of all, disrespectfully refusing to look him in the eye even once.
This pattern of behavior will only get more dissected and exposed as time goes on. "Bitchy" or not, criticisms such as Pete's this morning that Warren was "more specific and forthcoming about the number of selfies she's taken than how she will find her health care plan", will multiply and resonate. She will maintain a decent base of support, but those on the fence and newcomers will get wise to her game and look elsewhere. This won't happen overnight but this is the beginning.

I believe in Warren's case it will have an effect r402 because I think many of her more recent supporters were somewhat hoodwinked by this technique-- a very sly approach of appearing to be candid, straightforward and matter of fact when she is actually being the opposite. I think it's taken some time for the other candidates and the media to catch on and start articulating their doubts , and now that they have, it will become more clear to the public at large.
Also, I believe Warren's confidence in herself and her myriad plans is appealing--until one realizes that what they are actually witnessing is OVERconfidence. Her self aggrandizing selfie count, for example, underscores a carefully disguised smugness that is becoming more apparent .

Kamala and Julian are correct. Something has to be done about the current debate structure -- all the moderators care about is getting candidates to attack each other and creating "gotcha" viral moments. Maybe they need to be given over exclusively to PBS, which doesn't have to chase ad money.

by Anonymous | reply 436 | October 16, 2019 8:32 PM |
They won't vote on the first ballot, R435. They don't come into play unless nobody wins the nomination on the first ballot. For the first ballot, a winning candidate would need something like 1990 votes. If nobody achieves that, the super-delegates get to vote in the second ballot and a winning candidate would then need 2373 votes.
Short answer: no. If Warren or Sanders takes it in the first ballot, they take on Trump. And the current data show that each of them are in the lead right now and have a solid shot at winning in 2020.

R431 Digging into Nate Silver's numbers - the more interesting % to me is that Pete has the lowest "unfavorable" total. The current Twitter-verse, Bernie Bro, Woke Army response is to cast him as some kind of corporate shill. The Blue Dog, Centrist, Neo Liberal threat to the ideological purity represented by Bernie first, and Warren secondarily, and Harris/Castro just because.
In fact Buttigieg is still pretty hard to pin down on too many policy issues - his Douglass Plan is pretty impressive, but getting ZERO traction among AA voters who fundamentally distrust him. (His mediocre civil rights record as mayor doesn't help). So, he's the logical candidate to ascend as others fall out - only 13% don't like him. He'd need Biden to have a gaga/ stroke event in public, or simply drop out, and Klobuchar to stumble (she's not consistently smooth-centrist-stable mom... she has crags and shadows), AND he'd need Obama or Oprah to endorse him. Not likely to happen.
For the record, I am a democratic socialist who has given $ to Warren (most), Bernie, Castro AND Pete. I plan to vote for Warren.

Where do the moderates who just want to tinker with Obamacare start negotiating from? Their position is the endgame position. What do they give up to the other side to get it passed during negotiations. And, there are always negotiations. You don't start at your endpoint. Warren is starting at the grand liberal dream scenario and leaving plenty of room to negotiate to a place where you end up with, wait for it, a very good public option that mimics Medicare which will slowly fill with people as they realize that it's a much better value and much easier and less annoying than dealing with insurance companies. Medicare for all achieved on longer timeline.
And, those attacking Warren leaving Biden out of her list of people that helped her form the Consumer Protection Agency seem to be fine with Biden proclaiming that he's the only person on that stage who has every done anything big. Her speaking about the CPA she formed under Obama was in answer to Biden's bullshit claim that none of them had accomplished anything. You also don't seem to have a problem with Biden talking down to her by saying, "You did a hell of a job AT YOUR JOB!" to which she, after a pause, simply replied, "Thank you."

R470, Re how other countries can provide medical coverage for all . . . prior to recent mass immigration every country with socialized medicine had extremely strong social controls and a fairly homogeneous population.
By contrast now Britain's health services are being strained due to the prevalence of cousin marriages with a high rate of babies born with severe disabilities. There are an overwhelming number of cases of severe obesity, drug addiction, alcoholism, mental illness, etc all of which result in skyrocketing medical costs. R483 Aggregate polls for Iowa, where he's organizing and spending $, show Pete at 14%.... about 8% behind Biden and Warren. His campaign's strategy (like Obama in 2008, smart for new, unknown candidates) is to focus on Iowa... win or come in second there, do well in New Hampshire... and then see what happens. National polls don't mean that much for him yet. But as I've posted here a gazillion times, unless Pete can get some traction with communities of color, he's a dead end.

R486: poverty rates for OECD countries:
U.S. 17.8%
Canada. 12.4%
Australia 12.3%
U.K. 11.1%
Out of all OECD countries, the United States had the highest poverty rate as of 2016, at 17.8 percent. The country with the second highest poverty rate was Israel, with 17.7 percent.
The significance of the OECD
The OECD, or the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, was founded in 1948 and is made up of 36 member countries. It seeks to improve the economic and social well-being of countries and their populations. The OECD looks at issues that impact people’s everyday lives and proposes policies that can help to improve the quality of life.
Poverty in the United States
In 2016, there were 40.6 million people living below the poverty line in the U.S. About 21 percent of the African American population lived in poverty in 2017, the most out of any ethnicity. In addition, more young women lived in poverty than young men. It is clear that poverty in the United States is a complex, multi-faceted issue that affects millions of people and will require a solution for the country to move forward.

R494 So the arguments against universal health care are manifold. They shift when the facts contradict. "What's the Matter with Kansas" syndrome pervades the discussion of what's best for our country - the years of stultifying lobbying by Pharma et. al. have poisoned our thinking about what is possible. We're not homogenous enough (the most bizarre argument), we've too high levels of poverty.
Israel and US have EXACTLY the same poverty rates. Israel has a compulsory universal care healthcare system.

Yet a major contributor to poverty is lack of affordable healthcare for chronic conditions, for major illnesses(meaning people can't work for longer periods of time or can't work WELL because they are sick and so are unable to improve) as well as medical bills themselves.
So better healthcare most likely means fewer people in poverty as well as fewer bankruptcies.

You know, many of these healthcare discussions wouldn't be happening if only Democrats would have showed up to vote in 2010 to help Obama by keeping a healthcare friendly Congress. Many of the problems with the ACA could have been fixed. All I ask is that those of you who are screaming about MFA and Warren's plan, better be damned ready to show up in 2022.

Don't worry about us. It was the centrists who gave the house the majority in 2018.
It's the progressive purists who don't turn out or vote third party when they don't get their way.
