I was a fan of the 90's thread and with 2019 coming to a close I thought we could start on a new decade from 2000-09.
I will start the thread with "Mercy" by Duffy.

Natasha Bedingfield "Unwritten". It was THE frau anthem in the 00s.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 16, 2019 1:48 AM |
I feel like I hear 'Unwritten' on a ton of commercials still.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 16, 2019 2:38 AM |
R1 r2 I hated Unwritten but it was inescapable. I loved Bedingfields "The One That Got Away " but stations never ever played it.

Heard this on the radio the other day. Such a mysterious sound. It brought back obscure memories of high school.

The Thong Song was pretty inescapable, especially in clubs. Now you rarely hear it anywhere.

WEHT to Nelly Retardo? She was pretty big for awhile and then she disappeared.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 16, 2019 3:29 AM |
I don't know if this annoying song ever made it across the pond but in Europe it was HUUUGE! It reached #1 in more than 20 countries over here and everyone knew how to do that dance. But just like all the other novelty songs it quickly faded into obscurity. I'm actually surprised to see it has so many views on YT.

This goddamn song that followed me everywhere. I remember I was at a bonfire and some woman decided to blast this song from her car speakers for whatever reason. Some time later she attempted to rattle us a second time but someone answered our prayers and intervened.

r3, I still hear that one on the radio all the time not to mention as a throwback jack at clubs and summer bbqs.

All of Avril Lavgine's music except for "Complicated". She was everywhere in the early to mid 00s. All of Fergie's music. Michelle Branch, "Everywhere". Janet Jackson, "Doesn't Really Matter" and "All For You". Madonna, "Music" and "Don't Tell Me". Daddy Yankee, "Gasolina". Lil Wayne, "Get Low".
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 18, 2019 12:27 AM |
This song was all over the place in late Y2K. "The alleged assailant is five foot one" is such a daft line. And the way Wyclef deadpans "I'm losing blood, y'all" always cracked me up.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 18, 2019 12:31 AM |
I can't believe this song is ten years old but I remember hearing it all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 18, 2019 12:35 AM |

There was even a Christmas version of The Ketchup Song, R24

Most of Eminem's output from when he was huge would be in that category. I'm guessing people eventually realized how shit he was in the first place.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 19, 2019 4:34 PM |
I'd almost forgotten about Eminem, R26. His music sounds so dated now.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 19, 2019 4:56 PM |
Nelly's song above is a GREAT dance song.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 19, 2019 5:04 PM |
R29, I think it was from 2000. All of Train's songs were terrible and I'm glad I never hear them, ever.

R31, it was in Britain. Truth be told, I like "Warwick Avenue" and "Mercy" better than anything by Adele.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 19, 2019 7:33 PM |
Mercifully, I had stopped caring about pop music by Y2K. Don't know any of these songs.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 19, 2019 7:33 PM |
All of them. Pop music of the last twenty-thirty years will not have the lasting power of what came before. Hit songs are less and less about melody and lyrics these days and more and more about production. Nothing wrong with that. But production and arrangement get dated fast and limit the longevity of the songs.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 20, 2019 3:41 AM |
R26, Eminem is the biggest rapper ever and his classic music is still relevant. He still huge to this very day and still gets hits.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 20, 2019 3:55 AM |
The only song I don’t like by Nelly Furtado is “Promiscuous Girl” and Icould never escape it—particularly on MySpace. The other one was “Candy Shop.”
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 20, 2019 4:16 AM |
R26 Yeah I never understood Eminem / Mathers popularity. He was so tiresome. He had 3 subjects to rap about : his hatred of gays, his hatred of Mommy, and his affection for his spawn. He would shit out the most vile and bigoted lyrics but all would be forgiven if it was followed up by some cheesy line about how he loved his brat Haylee. The worst were the critics who were constantly wanking off to him.
Today's cancelled/ outraged generation can be a bit annoying but they would rip this piece of hideous white trash to shreds if he came on to the scene today. I'll give them that.

The Pussycat Dolls disappeared into oblivion, which is a good thing. There was a period of about two or three years in the mid-late 00’s when that stupid “Don’t Cha” song was literally everywhere.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 20, 2019 12:26 PM |
I'm glad I never have to hear this on the radio. So dated.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | October 20, 2019 2:51 PM |

Some of these posted still get airplay or various radio formats, not to mention commercials, and pop culture at large. Even if the artist has faded, the songs haven't.

r76 is an idiot. That song has been featured in 1000 commercials, films, and is recurrent gold on various radio formats. Its like Crazy In Love. You just hear them all the time.

In retrospect, I find music from about 2001-2005 to be atrocious. By 2006/7 things started to perk up, slightly.
I will contribute this Sheryl Crow abomination.

Oh man, and that awful song Sheryl Crow had with Kid Rock. I've managed to block it until now.

R83, I was in high school when 9/11 happened (my freshman year). That song was played CONSTANTLY after 9/11. FUCK THAT SONG!
R84, that song is played all the time still.

R86/R87, those two songs demonstrate why I've always hated Sheryl Crow's music.
