A Chinese drama series based on a popular gay-themed sci-fi novel has been pulled from one of the country’s top video-streaming platforms barely two months after its release, sparking fury among its fans. All episodes of Guardian (Zhenhun in Chinese) were completely removed from video-hosting service Youku on Thursday. The show – based on a novel published online by an author using the pen name “Priest” – is the latest in a string of Chinese productions recently pulled or delayed since an official directive was issued last month to “clean up TV programmes of harmful and vulgar content”.

One minute they are censoring gay shows and then the next they are funding books that teach 6-year-old children about gay people.

A country of contrasts!

If they apply censorship rules arbitrarily, everyone is scared all the time and everyone will be scared to speak out.

Dictatorship 101.

Shouldn't China be more worried about the secession of Hong Kong than this?

r8. Duh. It's a distraction. For eons homophobia has been used to distract the masses from something else (usually corrupt leaders and their shady business deals being uncovered).
