It's Octoberfast
This month I am going on a serious diet. I am 5'6" tall, 195 pounds, over 50, and I need to lose at least 15 pounds, but probably more.
I plan on cutting way back on the sugar and the bread, and trying to keep my daily calories to 1500.
It can be done, slowly but surely, but it is so easy to put it back on one-two-three.
Maybe some of us could do it together, and we could track our progress on this thread.
Ready, set, diet...!

I can't be having people who can't make a joke, don't understand how numbers work or promote the usage of peanut butter. Not because it contains peanuts, but because it's fucking disgusting and it /reeks/.

I've been using the 'Lose-it' app since last November, also targeted at around 1500 calories. That's tough to do, so I've scheduled in an occasional cheat day. Results? Down from 223 to 184. At 6' 0" my target is 170 to 177. Be sure to up your exercise, if you can. Even daily walks help (I'm doing that, plus weights and bicycling). The app lets you credit exercise toward an offset, increasing your daily calorie intake.

Day 4: 196.6
To celebrate a friends birthday, yesterday I had a bacon cheeseburger, french fries, Swedish fish and chocolate wafers. Ugh.

Good for you. Wish i saw this earlier. I have 15 lbs to lose too, but will consider a success Iosing 7 in October. I don't have a scale but I do have a belly from the first half of the year's "Kummerspeck" ("grief bacon" from overeating/junk food) and my knees feel the pressure from carrying the load. My success will be in inches lost from the waist.

Lower your carbs and up your good fats. Cut out wheat and most grains. Don’t have to go total keto. No alcohol. Light to moderate exercise. Concentrate more on diet than exercise. Abs are made in the kitchen and not the gym. Sleep. Good luck!

I had my cancerous thyroid removed and I am on a daily regiment of levothyroxine. Before the thyroid removal, I could go on the reduced carb diet and lose 20 pounds in 2 months. Now, post thyroid removal, I have done reduced carbs, and did not lose an ounce.
I am trying intermittent fasting, skipping 16 hours. No eating after 8, and start up eating the next day after 12 ( I usually go longer due to work). Less bloated with more energy so far. Because I am not eating till later, it gives me a higher absorption rate of my levothyroxine medication, so I am hoping that may be contributing to the energy boost.
Our senior center just moved into a 3000 square foot defunct gym just down the street, that kept the gym part upstairs. It caters to the 60 and over crowd. My partner and I are going to join. Only pitfall, not being able to observe the eye candy at a regular gym. But it's close by, and on our way home from work for both of us. Actually looking forward to my partner and I engaging in a healthier lifestyle. My partner is a smoker, and wheezes at the slightest physical exertion. It will be interesting on the treadmills.

OP, you know your strengths. Personally, I fell off the wagon Hallowe'en 1992. For months I happily avoided sugar. All it took was ONE fuckin Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and I was back on it. Not horribly, mind. So, beginning a diet as the rest of the Western wairld dives headlong into a three month orgy of unnecessary calories sounds a bit like pissing in the wind to me. But I know absolutely nothing and I'm quite proud of the years it's taken me to get here. Good luck, in any case.

Day 15: 199.4
I went to the Poconos with a friend this weekend, and we hit the following temptation pits:
Friday, bottomless fries at Red Robin Saturday, all you can eat shrimp at Red Lobster Sunday, breakfast bufet at a local place, dinner was all you can eat fish and chicken at Long John Silver Monday, lunch at pizza buffet.
It's a miracle I only gained two pounds. This is some fucked-up diet I'm supposedly on...

Intermittent fasting worked for me. Depending on your particular metabolism OP it could be a useful tool for you.
Start with 16-8 and then move on to 18-6 if you are able - that is the combination that got me to lose weight without counting calories. After 18 hours without food I will then have a snack at 2pm (usually a couple handfuls of nuts and a glass of water), a small meal at 3pm, and dinner at 7.

I did weight watchers to lose 25 pounds. It became like a game to me, counting points on the app. Really helped me understand where the guard rails were. Highly recommend. And yes over 50.

I made the same decision, OP. I just bought a new Fitbit (I killed the old one) and I've gone from 191 to 188 in a week. But it has to be a lifestyle change, not just a "diet."
I lost 25 lbs. the last time I used a Fitbit by cutting down on my food and walking the recommended 10K steps a day. But my dog was much younger then. Nowadays, she's only good for around the block, so I have to walk on my own. Where I live, people want to know who you are and why you're walking down their block, so it's easier walking with the dog. But I did walk around my yard yesterday, so there's that.
Good luck, OP!

OP I lost 20 pounds by cutting out most sugar. Virtually impossible to eliminate all sugar since its in so many foods. But I try to limit sugar to 30-35 grams a day.
I still eat bread, but make sure its whole wheat bread rather than white bread.

I hope this is a parody, seeing as there has been no attempt at weight loss these last 3 weeks --- he enjoys being a big fat gay cow, and will likely stay that way. Lol I'm thinking parody after that Poconos weekend....

OP, are you logging everything you eat? Weighing and measuring portions? If you are sticking to 1500 calories a day you would be under 190 today. There is some good advice in this thread that you started but you don't seem to take any of it.
