Musicians you like that nobody listens to anymore.

Are there any bands or singers that you regularly listen to that nobody likes anymore? I see a lot of CDs in the used bins of record stores that are in almost new condition by bands and singers that were once very popular. Albums by Alanis Morrisette, Blind Melon, The Indigo Girls, The Cranberries, and The Spin Doctors. I'm guessing that none of them have garnered classic status like say Nirvana, The Cars, or Madonna. One of my personal favorites that I listen to is Alice Donut

No one I know listens to Pet Shop Boys anymore, but I still keep up with them.

Although with all the albums, and remasters, and B-sides and remixes and special limited editions they put out it's a bit tough keeping up. It seems they're just about selling as many units as possible now.

I don't know if anyone listens to Nirvana on a regular basis like they used to but I still like them. I still break out my Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins CDs every once in awhile too.

Nelly Furtado. Her latest album, The Ride, is a masterpiece. But no one listens to her these days.

Crowded House put out some great pop tunes but they never made it that big in the States. Their greatest hits album is solid.

I started a Pandora station months ago from Rubberband Girl by Kate Bush and listen to it for several hours a day at work. Lots of Bush of course, but a good smattering of Tori Amos, the Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Roxy Music. Usually I alternate between that station and a more mainstream new wave channel that’s very Morrissey/smiths-heavy, but that music is probably still pretty broadly listened to by Gen X.

R26 Metallica still gets pretty heavy airplay on classic rock stations. I know a ton of people who still listen to them. I used to LOVE Ministry — I had totally forgotten.

[quote]Nelly Furtado. Her latest album, The Ride, is a masterpiece. But no one listens to her these days.

She was hip-hop/folk-pop and morphed into what she announced was anti-feminist R&B with Loose, of which the only good song was Say It Right. Genre hopping is a bad idea.

R62, that has to be one of the most unexpected career turns ever. It was also a blatant stab at commercial success after her folk album bombed.

Judas Priest, Blondie, Roseanne Cash, Willie Nelson, Dixie Chicks / Court Yard Hounds.

by Anonymousreply 65September 20, 2019 12:57 AM

Peggy Lee, George Jones, and Johnny Hartman.

Modern music is very generational. I’m a Gen-Xer but discovered performers like these in the early 90s, which is the era that dominates this thread.

I think because I’ve always listened to music a bit out of time, I’ve always known that most everything would end up being forgotten.

Listen to what you love and don’t lament the vague lonesomeness you feel as you feel the band or singer slipping into obscurity.

They’re all chalk marks in a rainstorm, to quote Joni Mitchell.

Half of my music collection would fit in this thread from hard rock/metal bands long past their glory days (Cinderella, Tesla, Saxon), 80s/80s-influenced synthpop (Camouflage, De/Vision), industrial/alt bands (Thrill Kill Kult, Revolting Cocks, Front 242), late 90s alt/rock (SR-71, Remy Zero, Dishwalla, Fountains of Wayne), 00s pop/rock (Nick Carter, Mika, Under the Influence of Giants, Orson, The Click Five), etc etc.

by Anonymousreply 82September 20, 2019 2:27 PM

R60 came here to say The Sundays too. Soul II Soul and Tracy Chapman too.

by Anonymousreply 91September 20, 2019 7:27 PM

I also still listen to Soul II Soul. One of those artists who had a great debut, a pretty decent follow-up, and then just disappeared.

by Anonymousreply 92September 20, 2019 7:37 PM

The The and The Church as mentioned above. I still also enjoy Prefab Sprout and Aztec Camera. Even more obscure is an English band called The Bible whose 1988 album Eureka is nearly perfect. I've listened to it from time to time for all these years and since I've got an Amazon Music "all you can eat" plan I've been revisiting a lot of old stuff from my youth. Some artists I'd like to hear again are missing though: The Lightning Seeds and De La Soul to name two of them.

by Anonymousreply 93September 20, 2019 9:07 PM

The Darkness. 4 Brit awards, one completely amazing debut album, and...catsuits.

Flamed out immediately. But , "Permission To Land" is a classic.

Yes almost all music I ever liked is still occasionally played chez moi. If the mood strikes, you will know that some one ditty can be hauled out again.

The only challenge is I make a point to keep up on new music in pop (English French and Arabic), dance, many kinds of electronic, opera, and "world" music, so the library is staggering and its hard for new stuff to break through my cognitive layers and stick.
