*Merriam-Webster announces end of grammar, beginning of complete nationwide mental illness and support for Trump 2020

Fixed it.

by Anonymousreply 1September 18, 2019 6:05 AM

^see?

by Anonymousreply 2September 18, 2019 6:10 AM

Might as well just get rid of the English language.

by Anonymousreply 3September 18, 2019 6:11 AM

"They" is plural regardless of what Merriam-Webster says.

by Anonymousreply 4September 18, 2019 8:57 AM

“You” was originally plural only.

by Anonymousreply 5September 18, 2019 2:47 PM

Wtf does being called “they” as a pronoun even mean? You have a cock or a cunt. That’s your gender.

by Anonymousreply 6September 18, 2019 2:50 PM

“They is going to be here in ten minutes.”

by Anonymousreply 7September 18, 2019 3:30 PM

Is more than one theys?

by Anonymousreply 8September 18, 2019 3:32 PM

I need to burn my University Degrees..............this is a descent into idiocracy.......

by Anonymousreply 9September 18, 2019 3:49 PM

People have been using "they" as a singular pronoun for a while now. . not even because of trans people but because it's easier than saying "he or she"

by Anonymousreply 10September 18, 2019 3:51 PM

They just chopped they’s cock off and got a new cunt drilled in by they’s doctor.

by Anonymousreply 11September 18, 2019 3:53 PM

r10...........my totally uneducated workplace buddies also constantly misuse the verb form "be".......he be, she be, they be.......and so on..............and all of it is still wrong......and always will "be"................. Always is an exceedingly long time.

by Anonymousreply 12September 18, 2019 3:53 PM

R12 sounds like they be a caramel or milk chocolate flavor.

by Anonymousreply 13September 18, 2019 3:56 PM

r12...........exactly, bingo

by Anonymousreply 14September 18, 2019 4:58 PM

We won !

by Anonymousreply 15September 18, 2019 5:01 PM

Words are fucking made up. They only mean what we agree on them meaning. They change meaning over time. Language changes. ALL THE TIME. Get the fuck over it.

by Anonymousreply 16September 18, 2019 5:12 PM

Virtue signaling one’s wokeness is more important than creating an accurate dictionary, evidently.

by Anonymousreply 17September 18, 2019 5:13 PM

Uh oh, now you've done it. You used "virtue signalling" and "woke" in the same sentence!

by Anonymousreply 18September 18, 2019 5:19 PM

This is like when THEY tried to make Ebonics an official language to be taught in schools.

by Anonymousreply 19September 18, 2019 5:20 PM

[quote]Words are fucking made up. They only mean what we agree on them meaning.

Well, WE doesn't agree that THEY is singular.

by Anonymousreply 20September 18, 2019 5:21 PM

r10, no they hasn't.

by Anonymousreply 21September 18, 2019 5:27 PM

[quote]it's easier than saying "he or she"

No, it aren't. Unless you is stupid.

by Anonymousreply 22September 18, 2019 5:29 PM

People have been using a singular they since the 1300s.

[quote]Much has been written on they, and we aren’t going to attempt to cover it here. We will note that they has been in consistent use as a singular pronoun since the late 1300s; that the development of singular they mirrors the development of the singular you from the plural you, yet we don’t complain that singular you is ungrammatical; and that regardless of what detractors say, nearly everyone uses the singular they in casual conversation and often in formal writing.

Why can’t we have words like “ze or zi” these non-binary people? And “zee or zie” can be the plural to refer to more than one or a group of non-binary people.

“They” is plural and does not mean a singular person.

by Anonymousreply 24September 18, 2019 5:39 PM

R24 We had words like ze or zi. No one used it.

[quote]Might as well just get rid of the English language.

Get off the cross, Mary.

"They" has been used as a singular pronoun since the 1300s, idiots. Read a book or get your GED or something.

And singular "they" is well established in formal writing, from Shakespeare to Emily Dickinson.

If it’s a singular pronoun, why does it still take a plural verb? I guess the singular “you” set the precedent. “Thou art” became “you are.”

by Anonymousreply 28September 18, 2019 5:54 PM

that's a man maury

by Anonymousreply 29September 18, 2019 5:55 PM

R25. I believe that people would use “ze or zi”now. When those words were first introduced several years ago, they were ahead of their time. But now that non-binary people are more common and much more a part of society’s consciousness, acceptance for non-binary pronouns would be easier.

by Anonymousreply 30September 18, 2019 6:06 PM

ZE!! ZE!! ZEE!!

by Anonymousreply 31September 18, 2019 7:21 PM

Why else would everyone be pretending that the usage of ‘they’ for an actual singular person is standard and very common if not to signal their virtue? Wanting to publicly signal that you’re on “the right side of history” is the definition of being woke.

by Anonymousreply 32September 18, 2019 8:10 PM

I don’t think what you’re talking about extends to grammar, r32

by Anonymousreply 33September 18, 2019 8:14 PM

[quote]Why else would everyone be pretending that the usage of ‘they’ for an actual singular person is standard and very common if not to signal their virtue?

Actually, it's mostly to "signal" their erudition rather than their "virtue," since this is, in fact, standard and has been so for quite some time.

Your ignorance of this is not our, or Merriam-Webster's, problem.

by Anonymousreply 34September 19, 2019 12:06 AM

I swear this generation is run by morons and retarded old asses who believe them

by Anonymousreply 35September 19, 2019 12:11 AM

Does this mean "You can fuck me" is now "They can fuck me?" Sure sounds like more fun.

by Anonymousreply 36September 19, 2019 12:17 AM

The ignorant are attempting to prevail, but it won't happen.

by Anonymousreply 37September 19, 2019 12:18 AM

I just read an article written with they and it was unreadable. Grammar is dead.

by Anonymousreply 38September 19, 2019 12:50 AM

Are we supposed to say "they is" or "they are" when using 'they' for one person?

by Anonymousreply 39September 19, 2019 1:39 AM

Good question R39

by Anonymousreply 40September 19, 2019 4:56 AM

Inclusion in a dictionary doesn't mean it's grammatically correct. iI just means its usage exists.

"Ain't" is also in the dictionary, after all.

by Anonymousreply 41September 19, 2019 4:57 AM

Enough idiots idiot it that it got in via "alternate acceptable usage." Idiots love nothing more than to idiot.

by Anonymousreply 42September 19, 2019 5:03 AM

R39, you follow the same pattern as the plural "you."

R41, this has been "grammatically correct" for centuries. Your attempt to pretend otherwise simply demonstrates your ignorance.
