Even with prominent person like Yang coming out against Gilis' firing, I agree that SNL had no choice but to fire him. But in today's climate, people do self censor or express views contrary to their beliefs because that is what is expected of them professionally. One of the reasons I withdrew from posting on public forums is because I want to be able to express contrary opinions or participate and risk being challenged on stuff I don't know about. Part of it is wanting to own myself and another part of me wants to venture outside my comfort zone in the hope of learning. Why would I want to do the latter if everything, including my brain farts, were subject to public scrutiny? Why would I put myself in a position where I have to publicly denounce something I believe in because it benefits me professionally?

We have gotten along well in the past separating our personal and professional lives. But not venturing our private thoughts does not mean we have to be put in a position where we have to publicly denounce our ideas, our friends, or our family just to prove how virtuous we are. But it doesn't surprise me that when you have a generation who thinks their shit doesn't stink, they can unload on everyone else who doesn't share the right opinions on absolutely every issue.

Scarlett Johanson was another unlikely candidate when she stood up for being cast as a transgender character (pre surgery) and was forced to unload all this BS so she could pass the purity test. Glad that she's gotten hold of her senses when she once again spoke her mind recently. That's what I consider refreshing. Of course, everyone wants to be thought of as perfect, but the world would be a better place if people were able to freely admit their faults.
