Conservatives continue to bully Greta Thunberg
by Anonymous | reply 241 | October 13, 2019 9:53 AM |
Stop making media stars out of children of any political stripe. It’s just wrong. Let the little attention seekers be the stars of their schools, not in the general public. It’s bad for everyone
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 30, 2019 6:59 PM |
She's trying to save the planet by bringing attention to actual climate science. The American right-wingers are truly fucking crazy.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 30, 2019 7:01 PM |
She looks like a Corky.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 30, 2019 7:03 PM |
They're all bad, Republicans and Republican-Lites both.
As she said: ‘You’re not trying hard enough. Sorry’.
All this patronizing praise for her.
Without any action or pledge.

She's trying to save the planet while the Americans consume more plastic than China.

by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 18, 2019 1:52 AM |
In what form does this bullying take?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 18, 2019 2:06 AM |
Awareness is meaningless without a plan for action. I have nothing against Thunberg, but I fail to see the point of her activism. Real activists have specific goals and usually have a plan for how to achieve them. Yelling "Do something!" is not meaningful activism.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 18, 2019 2:12 AM |
There are a lot of hard life lessons she needs to learn, sooner or later.

by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 18, 2019 6:40 AM |
You're an idiot if you don't realize that raising awareness is a huge part of activism. Either that, or you know it is, but you're just one of the many DLers who has to bitch incessantly about anything even remotely liberal.
And I don't know who r10 is referring to but that is creepy as fuck.

by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 18, 2019 9:48 AM |
Oh yes R14 - you're so right!
Like making as much as money as possible is far more important than saving the planet? That kind of lesson?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 18, 2019 10:05 AM |
I have an acquaintance who keeps posting on Facebook stories about the fantasy of global warming. And I wonder... why? What good does that do?
It's just common sense that if you keep adding more pollution to the world it's going to heat-up.
I read recently that so much of the world's population (Africa, China, India) don't even have electricity, still cook by fire, light by candle. But if they all suddenly started living like Americans (cars, appliances, etc.) we would literally suffocate the planet.

R13- that is not her role. And often no the role of activists. Action necessary to address the crisis is pretty clear. Suggest you Google Al Gore's recent commentary in the Times for a primer. It's an optimistic look at the solutions for the crisis. She is a child after all-

You bully her, you're fucking worthless TRASH.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 23, 2019 5:57 PM |
Granted, her speech sounded VERY much way over the top, as in rehearsed and overacted.
That being said, people bullying her (or any other kids and teenagers) because of their commitment are nothing but scum.

The right always attacks people who speak out their brutal, inhuman policies. It's the same treatment the Parkland kids got for suggesting it's a fucking scandal that school shootings are so common that the kids are forced to do drills for it. There's nothing too low and revolting for right-wing people to do. They're literally the worst people in the history of humanity. And that includes slave owners.

“And yet,” she said, “I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering, people are dying, entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you?”
Thunberg’s rage hearkened back to the youth-led Climate Strike last Friday, in which an estimated 4 million people took to the streets across the globe.
“For more than thirty years,” Thunberg said, “the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away?”

Who is aware of climate change now who was not aware of it before, thanks to Greta Thunberg?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 24, 2019 1:26 AM |
R24
There is no need for awareness. Anyone who has the ability to do anything is aware.
What we don't have is a plan for action. And there's a reason why Thunberg's handlers (as if her activism is entirely her own doing) aren't having her propose a plan: No one, not even people who agree that climate change is a crisis, wants to hear it. Slowing down (forget stopping or reversing) this crisis will require incredible sacrifices on everyone's part.
R37
Did Warren actually say that? If so, she's lost even more of my respect.

If she wants to be in the spotlight, she should expect people who disagree with her, especially when she is so accusatory towards others. If you are disturbed when, finally, some thinking adults push back, that is your problem. Don't assume they are all conservatives and do not see it as blackmail.

Counter with facts, R102, not name calling. If name calling is all you got, we shall look the other way.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | September 24, 2019 5:29 AM |
Her speech was all empty rhetoric and nothing precise or practical. I expected her to use her platform to directly ask her audience to e.g. give up beef, give up air-transported fresh fruit in the winter, give up buying consumer goods transported by sea tanker from China, etc. Practical solutions via communal sacrifices.
But instead she just threw a vague hissy-fit & barbed insults on stage and pointed fingers. She’s a demagogue. All she does is play the useless blame game, while petting herself on the head. She has no interest in even telling her massive followers to stop buying beef.
And all her accusations (“your generation is to blame, not mine!”) are moot. By irony, I bet her generation (across the planet) will actually pollute MORE. Because her generation will be bigger by number (the global population is still growing exponentially). And now that Asia and Africa are growing in terms of economy and catching up with the West - many people there have just recently reached middle-class status (with the ability to buy refrigerators and fly commercial). They are not going to give up their just recently obtained middle-class perks (fruit in the winter, holidays abroad) just because a bunch of rich privileged Swedes (who have been rich for a longer time, thanks to manufacturing emissions themselves) are lecturing them to go back to using rainwater and ride a horse-cart.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | September 24, 2019 5:39 AM |
Also, Sweden has achieved economic $$$ status thanks to decades of emissions through rapid industrialisation and profitable manufacturing. It would be hypocritical of kids from Sweden to turn around now and tell Asia and Africa that they need to cut emissions. It’s a bit like: “Well, we ourselves now got what we wanted, neener-neener (economic stability thanks to emissions & manufacturing business) - but we don’t want anyone else (in the still developing world, who started industrialisation later than Sweden) to be allowed the same economic growth & quality of life improvement via industrialisation like us!”.
Industrialisation is pollution by definition. But Sweden has already completed its own industrialisation & therefore secured a good economic life for its citizens - so now they can afford to muse about other things. Whereas Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and South America are still in the process of industrialising and thereby lifting their population out of economic agrarian/rural poverty and starvation. That’s why they’re called the developing world - they started the industrialisation process later than Western Europe and North America.
But the West and North of the planet can’t tell the East and South to cut emissions and stop the industrialisation process. Because ironically that’s how the West and North historically became rich themselves - through high-emission industrialisation. It would be hypocritical for a comparatively rich Swedish kid to deny others the right to an economically improved way out of poverty - and that is achieved by industrialisation, growth of manufacturing and pollution as a side effect.

Greta is an absolute natural at branding. In next to no time, she’s on the cusp of joining the ranks of Cher, Beyoncé and Madonna as a first-name-only star. The ‘Thunberg’ will be superfluous very, very soon. She needs to start thinking about a) making her first album or film b) forging celebrity alliances with people like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan who also care about the planet, c) taking a chill pill and hanging out in LA.

[quote] I was a kid in the early 90's and I remember collectively pushing for changes the cars were smaller, recycling, making sure we conserved water etc
Smaller individual cars don’t save the planet. Public transportation or constant car-sharing does. Recycling doesn’t save the planet - buying local, seasonal (i.e. no fruit flown in from Morocco in winter) and without plastic packaging does. You can’t save the planet by “tiny, convenient” sacrifices that still comfortably fit your consumer lifestyle - your sacrifices have to big and inconvenient. If you’re a meat eater - give up beef. If you have even a hybrid car but live in a city - give it up and use smelly public transport. If you want a gadget - buy a local, more expensive one and not a more affordable, cheaper one flown by commercial plane from Taiwan. Want a new suit? - buy pre-owned, not a new one. Only when it starts to really hurt and inconvenience you - then you know you’re actually making enough sacrifice.
Because Thunberg said that cutting emissions by 50% is NOT enough. Therefore people, as consumers driving the market demand for goods, need to make even bigger sacrifices to achieve that goal.

R170 conveniently ignores "ALL" the criticism about what Thunberg actually SAYS (i.e. not even a hint of analysis of various logical basic suggestions, just rabid ranting onstage). You're the one who is reducing everything to Thunberg's "looks", in an attempt to paint her as a 'perpetual victim'.
Feminism is not a shield to HIDE behind. Listen to what Thunberg actually says, regardless of her genitals - it's EMPTY, crowd-pleasing RHETORIC. It's demagoguery. Nothing she says is that helpful or practical, it's just blowing steam and pointing fingers into a void. And she can be criticised for it - having a vulva does not make her exempt from critique.

Sure, Jan. You're really trying to make this all about the "Patriarchy", aren't you? Well, you're incorrect. Henry Windsor-Mountbatten opened his big mouth and made an empty speech barefoot - and he was LAMBASTED for it. What now, is Henry a female now? According to your theory, everyone was supposed to sing praises to Henry, because he's a rich, privileged male - but instead people are exposing him for what he is: a grand-standing, elitist, preachy hypocrite.

Excuse me, but it's a common theme for prominent right-wingers to regularly attack children deemed "from the left" whether they're children of Dem politicians or someone like this kid or HS kids who've survived a mass shooting. Now show me pundits on the left going after any child for being "right-wing." It's no different from those roaches on the right screaming about celebrities involving themselves in politics, meanwhile, they've cornered the fucking market on celebrities running for office and apparently, people like Ted Nugent, Chuck Woolery (for fuck sake), James Woods, Jon Voight and Kid Rock are allowed to have opinions in their world.

Many conservatives are believers in climate change and support environmental initiatives. It’s the Republican elements associated with backwards lowly educated fucktards that have remade the party in their own image that are the problem.
A consensus should and could be have, and it’s necessary to come up with solutions that are wide-reaching and science-based, solutions that actually solve problems as opposed to something that placate angry people. To do that, we need coalition-building, public education, and promotion of collegiality as the public, governmental, regulatory, scientists, and industry forces work together to affect necessary changes. Who we and the media choose to anoint as public face of the movement is important too.
A leader of a movement who imbues her message with emotionally-based language that comes across as accusatory as opposed to wise or educational, this is not a good thing in my opinion. I also don’t like the sole emphasis on government and industries to save ourselves from destroying the planet. For instance why is it that our dietary choices aren’t talked about as a big factor in environmental destruction? But no, let’s continue eating beef and loads of meat and dairy, blame it all on the big bad oil companies instead. This is a multifaceted problem that deserves intelligent approach to educating the public and governmental entities, not an emotionally-wrought teenager who has mental health challenges made possible worse by her all-consuming obsession with climate change.
I applaud the general message but not this messenger. I’m discomforted by elements of exploitation behind her rise to prominence. But most importantly, we need to have coherent, viable spotlight shined on not just climate change but a plethora of environmental justice concerns such as human exposure to non-biological chemicals, pollution dump sites in poor neighborhoods, contamination in waterways and soil, industry lobbyists influencing public policy, etc... Climate change is out in front and center now, but I’m afraid that the message of environmental concerns will be sidelined or viewed as caustic by the general public if the heads of movement become stories themselves or are lionized as icons. The movement should take center stage, criticisms of the messenger should be allowed if they’re salient ones.
This issue is too complex to be mired in slogans and feel-good solutions engendered by impetus to placate overwrought emotions. We should consider the fact that rush to solutions almost always affect the best change, it becomes another change that may even worsen the problem or instigate more problems.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | September 28, 2019 5:22 PM |
Should’ve been “rush to judgment almost never lead to good solutions”
by Anonymous | reply 188 | September 28, 2019 5:25 PM |

Weren’t the Republicans the party who whined that children were off limits? I mean until Chelsea Clinton, then the Obama daughters.
Now it appears they mean only republican children are off limits. Yet, Falwell’s son owned a gay B&B while his father was busily transferring Liberty U assets into the names of various friends.
Trump isn’t even the tip of the iceberg of corruption. It’s time to investigate every republican and their family members who have illegally profited from public office. Those who can be prosecuted must be. Those who can’t must be exposed so the companies they are on the boards of drop them.
Then pass a law that prohibits all members of Congress and their families from trading on or profiting from inside information.
Think beating up on kids is fun? Let’s put your kids in the spotlight.

Must be awful to be such a pathetic wimp.
by Anonymous | reply 205 | September 28, 2019 9:17 PM |
R204 Exactly, and why we need leaders to be thoughtful, inclusive (instead of angrily casting blame), and solutions-oriented. It does no good to get people worked up emotionally, when it's likely any solutions arising from it would generate more problems. The "forever chemicals" in the so-called compostable bowls are a good example. Similarly, many companies advertise products being free of certain cancer-causing chemicals and preservatives. However, it turns out that many of these replacement substances are either equally toxic or cause another set of health or environmental concerns. So now we've created more problems of consumer complacency on top of new toxic substances being introduced into personal care products and packaging material for food. It's still up to us and consumer lobbyist coalitions to constantly be vigilant about safety.
Greta's mental health has been negatively affected, as demonstrated by dysregulated emotions during public appearances and speeches. Questioning her parents and backers for allowing this should not be automatically dismissed as work of right wing loons. She's someone with a history of serious mental health disorders, and yet she's not in school or getting effective type of help. If it was effective then her OCD and anxiety wouldn't be allowed to flourish in this manner. Being well-adjusted means that she could be attending school, receiving treatment, and still participating as a leader in this movement. Either/ or, black/ white, all or nothing approach is never psychologically healthy for both children and adults, but particularly for a child with significant mental health history. Greta seems like an intelligent, caring (though somewhat misguided) girl though I don't think her parents and backers have her best interests in mind.
Emotions should not be the driving force of policy change, especially policies requiring coordinated efforts of multiple regulatory agencies, industries, governments, and scientific authorities. Yes, leaders of movements should make connections via emotional appeal, but it should not overwhelm other factors because then they'd just be inciting anger while encouraging little else. Most of us have done something based out of raw emotions, things which we then regret later on. It's no different with the all-encompassing nature of environmental issues. Encouraging children to walk out of classes is fine, but educate further on how they can affect change on a personal level instead of demanding change on a global level where the blame is all on governments and industries. Educate kids on how they and their families can make changes to dietary habits to help the environment. Educate them to also eschew fast fashion, electronic gadgets, and other consumerist habits that are all applicable towards affecting positive environmental changes.
Good leaders educate and inspire others, with others following feeling empowered to accomplish steps to further the movement. Good leaders do not castigate without offering solutions, they also do not advance the movement by having an all-or-nothing mentality in relations to affecting necessary changes. To say such-and-such steps are not radical enough or not in accordance to what my specific beliefs are, this kind of leadership is troublesome to me. What's unfortunate is that Greta has aligned herself with anti-nuclear power forces in the Green movement, which ironically makes her a natural ally of the coal industry. The coal industry has spent a lot of money getting people to mistrust nuclear power. This is an example of what I mean when I say there are valid criticisms against what Greta is saying or forces with which she aligns herself. Complex problems demand complex solutions that are not born out of anger and other negative emotions. These solutions require cooler heads examining feasible and effective measures. I don't want to live in a world where the loudest, most emotional, or most popular leaders are viewed as most capable to lead or solve problems complex issues.

Right, better you invade another country and kill a million because people like you only know how to be savages and calling children "retards."
Of all of the "trolling" I've seen on DL, this particular obsession with this kid might be the most pathetic I've ever witnessed. You're the ones who are clearly mental. Fucking diseased.

Only conservatives and their flying monkey lapdog neocon liberals and "libertarians"- the attention whores of politics. Parasitic piles of shit.

20 years ago there were a lot of conservatives who were concerned about global warming.
20 years of stable temperatures and rising CO2 created serious doubts.
Research implicating solar cycles and myriad unknowns, cosmic and terrestrial, disabused them of any religious certainty regarding CO2 as the sole cause of global warming.

Still, the most shit being spoken is about her looks or making fun of her mental health. Fine, she's a zealot. She's one dimensional, she's being used by her parents. There are fair points to critique but, even though it's fun to rip on celebrities and such, this feel really low. She's a kid, and she's trying to do what she feels is right, as misguided as some may think she is, I think it's wrong to trash her looks because what she is saying makes people uncomfortable.
She's not hawking products or selling a record. She wants leaders and governments to take climate science seriously.
I admire her and her tenacity in the face of so much hostility. She much tougher than our super fragile, so called president or other republicans and pundits

The same people attacking her are the same ones claiming kids "play too many video games" leading to mass shootings. The right-wing is where genuine evil resides. Horrible assholes.

This weekend, I rinsed out a heavy-duty ziploc bag (that contained bagels, so not even soiled) and set it to dry so I could reuse it. Someone said something snotty about their grandma and the Depression and I sanctimoniously asked “What Would Greta Do?”
It gave me a little self-righteous zing.

What is Thunberg "trying to do right", R219? Give me 10 examples of modern consumer-habits that she gave up in order to help the environment.
And she's almost 17 - so while still technically a "minor", she's not completely a "child". She'll be eligible to vote and join the Swedish military in about only a year's time. She also already reached the age of consent (in Sweden it's 15-16).
She's a voluntarily public person on the cusp of legal adulthood - it's ironic that you're criticising others for being too harsh on her, and yet you're the one who is infantilising her, like she's a baby. She's not 9 years old - she'll be 17 soon.

Here is the thing you don't seem to comprehend: The Trump admin. is REVERSING anything everything that at least slowed down our demise. Rather than get pissed at this kid, why aren't you pissed about that? Why waste your fucking time on attacking this young lady for whatever warped reason? Even the actual polluters like car companies are saying to Trump "Woah, even we don't agree with this shit."
That's the reason this obsession with her "haters" is so insane. Trump is making every effort to expedite the destruction of this planet and you're trying to make it about her?
by Anonymous | reply 225 | October 1, 2019 8:10 PM |
The main cause of global warming is over-population. In 1960 there were about 3 billion people on the planet. But by 2000 (just 40 years later), the population DOUBLED to 6 billion. Now, just 20 years later, we're almost at 8 billion.
The more people - the more plastic waste, garbage, food / meat demand, urban space (housing) demand (deforestation), water demand, electricity demand, etc.
The planet would be better off if we reverted back to the 1960 population figure (3 billion). So we need to slowly reduce the world population by about half. Instead of empty ranting, Thunberg should tell her followers (including her generation) the harsh, cold truth: in order to save the planet, they need to stop having unprotected sex and breeding like robots. Even Thunberg's parents had 2 kids - because apparently 1 kid is "not enough". People say if you & your partner don't have kids, you're "not a complete family" then - that is a reckless, moronic tradition.
But of course the majority of breeders likes having sex and having babies too much - they'll never give it up. Even if it means we'll eventually over-exploit the whole planet.
by Anonymous | reply 226 | October 1, 2019 8:37 PM |
There's also a correlation between the increasing human population - and the resulting increase in extinctions of other species and decline in biodiversity and forest space.
Basically, by over-breeding we're pushing out many other species of animals and plants (except for urban rats, cockroaches and domestic cattle for meat) to the brink of extinction.

Populations are actually falling in Western countries. As with carbon, her target audience are not the drivers.
Let her take her carbon message to China and India. Will the Chinese govt coo over her?
Let her take her poputlation message to African countries. Will they have any interest?

Surely you jest, R220? Helpful? She's raising awareness of the looming disaster. WTF are you doing besides dragging her?
Is it helpful to ignore science or the IPCC report? Is it helpful to continue to deflect public concern while continuing along a path of destruction?
Yeah, you're the 'helpful' one who gets to judge.

How about YOU go to China, if you're so smug and self-righteously sure about her message being useless here. How about you get off your ass and garnish some PR for the only planet you call home getting trashed instead of saving up your trickle down cash for a ticket to Mars on some billionaire's fantasy plan. [quote] Populations are actually falling in Western countries.
That's a misleading metric. The population (even in Western countries) is still growing. The lower birth rates simply mean we're growing at a SLOWER rate than we used to - but we're STILL expanding. Our population DOUBLED in just 4 decades, so of course we slowed down a bit compared to that - many cities (even in Asia) are running out of space and people are feeling the financial and space squeeze. But people are living longer, people are having children later in life. People who can't have children are now getting surrogates, just to satisfy their uncontrollable need for breeding. So the population of many Western countries is actually not diminishing, but increasing:
[quote] Population in the world is currently (2019-2020) growing at a rate of around 1.08% per year (down from 1.10% in 2018, 1.12% in 2017 and 1.14% in 2016). The current average population increase is estimated at 82 MILLION people per year.
82 million per year - that's the size of a medium-sized country! That's about the population of Germany. So we're growing by basically adding an additional country / an additional "Germany" to the planet each year.

[quote] She's raising awareness of the looming disaster. WTF are you doing besides dragging her?
R233, what are you doing besides dragging people who note that inciting a "mass panic" doesn't help. There was a mass panic during the Fukushima nuclear disaster - "Oh, my god! Nuclear disaster! Radiation! We're all going to die! Run for your lives! Save your children!". And, guess what - a disproportionate number of people died in the mass stampede and mass panic. They died not from radiation - but from someone like Thunberg scaring a mass of people into a wild-frenzy panic mode ("Nuclear energy will kill us! Never use it again! I want you to panic!").
And a lot of DLers are actually ironically helping the environment - unlike Thunberg's breeder parents who think 1 kid is not enough. Being gay and old-school, many DLers are choosing not to have crotchfruit, especially later in life. And people should learn from DLers in this respect. The smaller the human population will gradually become - the better for the environment and other species.
Not having kids is helping much more than sailing around the world like Thunberg and then pushing out 2-3 kids in your 20s-30s, to perpetuate the cycle of over-populating the Earth all over again.

R236, again, You have a concern about China or India? Go there yourself and fuck off with trying to tell this young woman where to go or what to say.
She's done her job if jits like you notice and criticize her and boy does that piss you off.
Thunberg is telling Congress, the West, the UN to pay attention to the science. You, on the other hand, want to characterize her as some uniformed, immature fear monger without understanding anything else she's doing, has done, or will do and equating it to the panic of another incident.
How foolish you are to try to create false equivalencies around disasters to try and prove your point. It makes you look demonic and uncaring, unlike Greta, who gives a damn.
Good for you that you think you're doing something great by criticizing her efforts at creating awareness.
by Anonymous | reply 237 | October 2, 2019 1:34 PM |
R237, lol, so Thunberg can tell everyone what to do and what to say - but I can’t tell her the same? What is she - an off-limits “sacred lamb” behind red tape? The world works in mutual ways. It’s not a one-way street. If she wants to stand on a soapbox & correct others - then I can likewise correct her empty, trite, populist rhetoric.
I can go up to your home, or to the UN, and start preaching, saying the same banalities as her: “End world hunger - now! People are suffering! People are dying! Children are being denied their childhood! How DARE you eat 2,000 calories per day - while others are starving!”. And, what, do you think me pointing fingers at your stomach full of food will change anything? Me snearing at you and blaming you won’t make you donate more food to food banks. But if I come to your door and calmly reason with you and give you several (pragmatic) options & incentives to help - maybe you will. This is basic school psychology - snearing and blaming others is ineffective.
[quote] She's done her job if jits like you notice and criticize her
What “job”? Her words haven’t changed anything I do daily any differently. Because she hasn’t said anything practical. Watching videos of Thunberg snearing hasn’t had any pragmatic effect on my life, whatsoever.
[quote] Thunberg is telling Congress, the West, the UN to pay attention to the science.
Most members of the UN are developing countries and they don’t give a heck what some rich (to them) blonde white Swede rants about.
[quote] You have a concern about China or India? Go there yourself and fuck off
I don’t have a concern about China. They were the only country in the world that tried to do the right thing - encourage a logical 1-child policy. It didn’t quite work, but it was an idea in the right direction. I have a concern about countries like Britain and even Sweden who bashed China for trying to do (for once) the right thing and even called the idea of limiting (unsustainable) human breeding rights “draconian” and a “violation of human rights”. What’s the point of me recycling, driving a hybrid car and limiting my read meat consumption - if people just keep encouraging over-breeding like rabbits and negating all my efforts.
But Thunberg will never talk about teaching people sustainable population control - because then even her “eco-supporters” can turn on her. Nobody wants to hear they have to control their sex desires and breeding fantasies.

Actually a lot is being done but when you are a 16 year old who can start to think abstractly for the first time, it seem like it is all about you and you have all the answers no one else ever thought of. Actually, she doesn't provide any answers or facts. She has an obviously effective shtick, but she is being used, poor child (I guarantee she wil commit suicide within the next 5 years).
