Latest Titanic expedition:

"The first dive expedition to the Titanic in 14 years has shown rapid deterioration of the wreck, with some parts already being lost to sea.

Explorers making the first manned voyage to the wreckage said key features had already decayed away from the ship, which has been on the ocean floor since 1912 after colliding with an iceberg.

The team of divers made five submersible dives down to the Titanic, which sits roughly 3800m down in the Atlantic. Strong ocean currents, salt corrosion and metal-eating bacteria are being blamed for the ship's decaying condition.

Titanic historian Park Stephenson said the deterioration of the ship is "shocking". "

This is inevitable but still really sad. I have loved the Titanic since I was around 8 or 9. Hopefully these replica rebuilds get finished.

Is OP Olivia de Havilland?

by Anonymousreply 1August 21, 2019 11:45 PM

She'll never sail again now.

Fuck you.

Of course not darling — this isn’t a DEAD TO ME thread.

by Anonymousreply 4August 22, 2019 12:32 AM

I actually would have expected it to be in worse condition, given that it's been there for 107 years.

Too soon? (Watch with the sound on)

You have to admit the movie is one fucking cool spectacle.

Ship rammed into an iceberg and has been at the bottom of the ocean for 100 years.

Now it's not in great shape

It’s the ocean floor, not a beaker of formaldehyde. Is it that shocking the fucking thing is disintegrating after 100 years down there following a major structural failure?

by Anonymousreply 9August 22, 2019 12:53 AM

How does one find a career as a Titanic historian? Isn't that a little absurdly over-specialised?

by Anonymousreply 10August 22, 2019 12:55 AM

This proves that if it hadn't hit the iceberg, it still wouldn't have last.

Correct. As large, luxurious and technically advanced as it was, Titanic almost certainly would have been scrapped within 20 years of its maiden voyage. Ship design and propulsion systems (coal ---> diesel) advanced rapidly in that era.

by Anonymousreply 12August 22, 2019 1:10 AM

^^^^ and also there were 2 world wars.

by Anonymousreply 13August 22, 2019 1:45 AM

The Titanic is an insatiable bottom.

by Anonymousreply 14August 22, 2019 2:44 AM

Insatiable bottom feeder more like it.

by Anonymousreply 15August 22, 2019 2:47 AM

The Titanic is the final resting place of those who went down with the ship, and the ship itself is a consider a grave site. It's supposed to be corroding after more that 100 years in salt water. It's not intended to be a museum.
