I had no idea some of these players like Flipkens, Rybarikova, Jaziri etc. were in qualies! Especially Flipper who I thought had had a much better year than that? Two former SFalists Peng and Wickmayer through, i’m DYING to see Peng Shuai qualify and draw Allison Van Uytvanck (who snitched on her and got her suspended for a year or so).

R2 There's a lot of people (including people outside DL) who think he is not straight.

Sloth Stephens is back with Kamau Murray.
Apparently he wasn't happy with Monica Puig (no further details yet), but she made a big commitment and moved her life to Chicago so she could be coached by him so I wonder what really caused that split.
I suppose this explains why Sloane and Sven split.

To be fair, her shoulder injury and surgery really hampered her career. She was top 20 in 2002 and had wins over Capriati in addition to others. She very well could have won a few small titles and reached a few more Wimbledon rd16/QF but her serve was never the same.

"At the end of last week, Kamau informed me that he would not be available to go to the US Open with me, which was a total surprise to me," Puig said in written statements. "I have put it behind me, and I am fully focused on preparing my best for the US Open."
Puig's agent, Marijn Bal, reported that Serbian Dusan Vemic will work with Puig in New York. Vemic, a 43-year-old extenist, was part of the Novak Djokovic work team between 2011 and 2013.
Similarly, Bal insisted that Murray's move took the Olympic champion's team by surprise.
"It was a total shock to us," Bal told El Nuevo Día .
****************
This is beyond slack to Monica Puig. Imagine moving your entire life to Chicago to train with a coach and they dump you the week before the US Open (one of the most important weeks of the calendar) to get back with their old client instead. And don't even tell you that. By all accounts (Puig's twitter likes) she only found out when Stephens posted on Twitter that she was back with Kamau.
Then again I never liked Kamau. He was always laughing at the opponents of his players and is one of the worst offenders when it comes to coaching from the stands. He wasn't even that dedicated to Stephens the first time around, ditching her during the YEC so he could go do a coaching clinic with the Clintons or something to that effect.
I hope they draw each other first round and Puig beats her ass.

well it's kinda shocking that Puig's career didn't take off after the 2016 Olympics win. That's now over 3 years ago. She only won 1 small title prior to that and nothing since.
Stephens has been awful since she and Murray broke up but she was starting to lose a lot before his departure too.

She’ll probably pull out with a shoulder injury.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 22, 2019 6:31 PM |
it depends on Serena's back and nerves. She couldn't serve with much pace at all against Andreescu in the final and could not move. Most of the points she won were when she spun her serve out of Andreescu's reach but they were below 100 mph. She'll need her full game against Sharapova. Serena also can't have a nervy day like in the Wimbledon final. Sharapova will be determined not to have another first round loss
It will be a night match too and for whatever reason Sharapova has never lost any of those
Plus Serena has a history of weird results at the USO
Serena SHOULD win but given all the factors I listed I wouldn't be shocked if somehow Sharapova won
by Anonymous | reply 40 | August 22, 2019 6:45 PM |

I clearly remember that at Wimbledon 1987, when Graf, Navratilova, Evert and Pam Shriver qualified for the Semi-finals, l'Equipe, the French sport newspaper headline was "Three Stars and a *Sausage* qualify for the Wimbledon Semi-Finals". And then inside the article, Pam Shriver was described as a player whose flat feet made her walk like a duck, run like a duck and quack like a duck. She was literally manhandled by the newspaper. History will remember that Graf took Shriver out by 6-0 6-2 while the other semi went to Navratilova in three competitive sets 6-2 5-7 6-4.

R40 Her night match winning streak at the USO was broken last year by Carl Suarez Navarro.
This Coco Gauff shit is out of control. She now has her own Reebok line she will debut at the US Open, the FRONT COVER of Teen Vogue, Barilla patches all over, is the most marketed player on the US Open social media, and now this ludicrous 'call me Coco' campaign.
How many vultures in her team are making money off of this child's back? Has she even beaten anyone other than the walking wounded Venus, Rybarikova (out of the top 100), and BARELY getting by an awful Polona Hercog? I like her but I hope she has the wits to survive being turned into a cash cow at such a young age.

The Coco train is totally out of control.
I just watched and article about the draw and they are talking about a Coco-Osaka match on third round, when Coco has Potapova on first round and probably CSN in second, both favourites against Coco.
I find curious that there's no such buzz over Anisimova which proved a lot more than Gauff (i know Gauff is still a kid), Anisimova was really near of reaching the RG final and she really does well on GS. It seems a very marketable player

Busty starlet Dolehide had some good results last year, but right now she seems to be struggling in the ITF/challenger circuit to get any wins.
Roland Garros finalist Marketa Vondrousova has withdrawn from the US Open with a left wrist injury
by Anonymous | reply 104 | August 24, 2019 1:23 PM |
Caroline Dolehide looked like a very complete player during that Indian Wells run where she almost beat Halep. Terrific net game, great movement for a big girl, and a bold shotmaker. I don't know what happened to her since but she's been struggling to string a good run together for a while. This was a good Qualifying performance for her, hope she can do some damage in the MD and get back on track because she was fun to watch.
I do wonder if having massive breasts is an impediment to her? Halep herself got a significant reduction and her career basically took off afterward.
Feel sorry for Marketa Vondrousova. Up until the RG final she was having one of the best years out of any player (QF or better in every single event since the AO), and looked quite sure to qualify for the YEC. Due to her injury she's struggled to take advantage of that momentum either on OR off the court.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | August 24, 2019 3:08 PM |
I think the evolution of the power game with the women has led to so much inconsistency. That's why someone like Wozniacki could get to #1, or Svitolina is in the Top 5, or Halep won two Slams. Even Serena struggled with on/off days when she arguably should have been peaking (2003-2009). All these power players struggle with consistency. That's why I like Andreescu. She has power, but also variety. Her problem is injuries. I'd like to see her make a deep run at the US Open.

What is Shapo’s skin color?
by Anonymous | reply 121 | August 24, 2019 11:39 PM |
The official WTA sociopath Camila Giorgi was so frustrating in that final! Blew so many opportunities to serve for the match in set 2, and in set 3 she was up a break at 4-3 and just decided to hit home runs instead of playing tennis. She only won one more point in the match. Bizarre.
Happy for Magda Linette though who won the title all the way from qualifying. She plays Sharma in the US Open, whereas Giorgi plays Sakkari. I wonder if they'll have anything left in the tank.
Hurkacz is a really likeable guy and has given some top players a lot of good matches this year. Beat Tsitsipas, Thiem, Nishikori (x2), Shapovalov, took a set off Djokovic at Wimbledon... quietly having a breakout year.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | August 24, 2019 11:48 PM |
Happy for Linette. Wang should have won yesterday but caved against Giorgi at the end.

What's up guys! I just saw legend Martina Navratilova in midtown! I was going to the CVS and she was on lexington and 50th street, walking with a female friend...I think they were going back to the hotel.
I know I said I was gonna go to the free week of US open but it was just too hot and I never went lol.
She was wearing a dark blazer with like navy or black cargo pants and sneakers. The woman she was with was wearing a long dress and not thin. Think they are just friends, judging by body language.
I wanted to shout out " I love you Martina!" but I didn't, I was too chicken!

Shapo has really lovely eyes.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | August 25, 2019 11:06 AM |
Shapo doesn't seem to have a personality, and his game when he is not on is a disaster.
He has no plan B he doesn't use a slice even if his life depends of it. He is really a great shotmaker but he is basically Rublev with a one hand backhand.
His body language on court is too agressive for my taste, he reminds me of Hewitt
by Anonymous | reply 134 | August 25, 2019 11:30 AM |
The Shapo-FAA was very weird, and i'm not talking about the ending.
Both won a set, but they won the set that it was dominated by their rival. When they had to close that set both choked.
It'll be an interesting match because none of them are playing well right now.
I think Felix is feeling the pressure, he seemed a nice a focused guy, but the whole instagram gilfriend is a big no. It's true that till now he keeps the thing low key but the less he needs is an attention seeking girfriend if he really wants to reach the next level
by Anonymous | reply 135 | August 25, 2019 11:36 AM |
I never pay too much attention to players instagram but frankly people are really disgusting.
Yesterday i watched Carlos Alcaraz's instragram and someone was telling him he has no level to play challengers and his game is pathetic losing his serve and making so many mistakes (Carlos is 16 and he won that match, he lost in the following round but in three competitive sets). And now i was watching FAA and someone telling he is a losing for posting pics with the supposed girlfriend (and someone saying nice bitch was not exactly a great comment either).
I suppose it's because the sponsors want the visibility, and probably they only chose the pic and nothing more, because reading the comments seems like a big waste of time and really unuseful (unless you want to put yourself in a bad mood)
by Anonymous | reply 136 | August 25, 2019 11:49 AM |
I do like having Camila Giorgi on the tour. She's spectacular to watch (either spectacularly good or spectacularly bad depending on the day lol). Probably the most consistently aggressive player on the WTA. She doesn't even THINK to defend, just incredible footspeed and fast swings, I don't even know where the power comes from. And the completely blank expression would be funny if it wasn't concerning.
But i'm a bit put off by her cold, rude, unsportsmanlike demeanour on the court, her COMPLETE lack of a Plan B, point construction, or any mental strength in matches, and her creepy ageing lolita look that she plays up to the Nth degree (her instagram is a real trip). Also the whole situation with her family is very weird, her sexy photos she does with her brother, her mother making her all these skimpy outfits, her dad rubbing her legs all over while he screams at her during OCC...... I know they're very close after her sister died but the whole thing is a bit unhealthy and unsavoury to watch.
There is also the small matter of her dodgy business dealings and avoiding debt collectors.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | August 25, 2019 11:54 AM |
What really bothers me are all those gamblers who post comments or send messages to the players insulting them because of lost bets etc.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | August 25, 2019 12:08 PM |
Serena couldn't have drawn a better opponent for the first round. She typically will play her way into a tournament, but facing Cheatpova will have her keyed up and ready.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | August 25, 2019 12:29 PM |
R138: That's way worse than the casual hater.
And atp and wta seem to not care at all. They want the players to tell all when they get in contact with the gamblers but then they don't protect them.
And in the small itf tournaments is even worse. I remember a 17 yo french player who was playing a 15k in Spain and the guy even treatened his small brother on instagram.
It's easy to ban a player who is outside top 250, but what's important is to prevent those kind of situations and atp and wta are not doing anything at all
by Anonymous | reply 140 | August 25, 2019 12:54 PM |
I completely agree, R140. It's a disgrace how the players are being left alone to deal with this. There are some gamblers who seem to even attend the matches and heckle the players in person. Terrible.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | August 25, 2019 1:22 PM |
yes, it's happening in soccer too. Players are getting death threats and getting racially abused on social media in the UK. It's just terrible.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | August 25, 2019 1:30 PM |
They do on small tournaments. And the tournaments are unable to deal with them because in most cases they can talk with the players when they are on court but generally from outside the property so they can't be spelled unless they directly threaten the player. So they don't do that but they put pressure on him/her. And it's difficult enough to start your career without that scum making your life more difficult

She is not a happy girl, family uses her as an ATM, Dad is her coach and an asshole...very old school Italian.

Rubin says a lot of interesting things, but he is very wrong on the five set matches at GS. Sorry, but there are only four GS over the year, and they have a day to rest in the middle, epic five sets matches at GS are the ones who bring new fans.
But it's nice to see an inteligent player for a change.

by Anonymous | reply 160 | August 25, 2019 6:12 PM |
Rubin is 1 of the fastest players on tour and he's a shotmaker. His problem is he doesn't have much power on any of shots, including the serve and his backhand can break down. He'll have add more power if he wants to go further but it's tough at his height
by Anonymous | reply 161 | August 25, 2019 6:24 PM |

I had forgotten how much talking and BS they do on ESPN, really pathetic. Show some goddamn tennis.
And as much as I get that McEnroe and Chrissy are big draws, they keep referencing their generation, and the game has changed so much. Courier is on Tennis Channel and Becker on BBC, which is good, and I know Sampras and Agassi don't want to do TV, but you gotta think getting someone like Roddick in there would help things immensely. I know Blake is on Tennis Channel but he is SUCH a bore. We need some players who came from this more recent era. Henman, Davenport, Chanda, all good starts.

eew NO to Roddick. I hope he's never on espn. He's annoying as shit and I hated him as a player. Plus you know he'd leverage it into making us also suffer through promotional appearances by Brooklyn
but I HATE the way espn covers slams. They really do spend too much time hyping up the big names who don't need hyping. In the first 3 rounds there are always so many great matches not on the 2 biggest courts that they hardly ever show. I wish we could go back to espn letting the Tennis Channel show the outer courts but they've stopped that and it's now all "espn + " the subscription shit

Tennis really lost with Fognini out to Opelka. Seeing his yellowed teeth neanderthal smile as he sipped his Red Bull in the interview was so gross.
Granny Venus destroys San Jose Premier title winner Zheng SaiSai 6-1 6-0. I was legitimately shocked at how well she was playing. Some of her best hitting and serving in actual years, she looked super pumped up.
Anybody seeing this 16 year old guy Svajda? What a great effort if he pulls off the win. I bet he won't get the same attention as Gauff (who has the giant machine behind her), but awesome focus out there.

I'm surprised at how well he is doing. He is not even a top junior, in fact there are a good bunch of fellow americans younger than him with better results on the junior tour (boys born in 2003 seems a great generation).
I expected him to lose easily but he is giving a great fight and he was dominating most part of the match

R210 The kid is definitely a top junior. He just won the US Boys 18's national championship. If he played the ITF Junior circuit, I'm pretty sure he'd be top ten. Playing the ITF circuit takes a shit ton of money, and support from your country's governing body. When it comes to the USTA Junior program, it's all politics. He's not at the IMG academy, NBTA, or Saviano, and yet he beat players on his way to the final.

During the Serena v. Sharapova beatdown, Chris Evert kept on insisting that Maria still believes she can win the match. Yeah, right. Maria is many things, but she is not clinically insane.
by Anonymous | reply 272 | August 27, 2019 2:57 PM |
I loved reading how in Maria's book, she basically said Serena always beats her because she never forgot losing Wimbledon to some skinny white bitch. I do think that loss angered Serena, and it especially bothered her afterward because then the endorsements piled up for the blond, white Sharapova. It's the same way Madison Avenue was creaming over Bouchard (white, blond, attractive). Serena, though, has always had plenty of endorsements, but I've heard it bugs Serena AND Venus to no end that Maria had more endorsements than they did until the Dopapova scandal. Thus, the frequent beat-downs.

I agree with Chrissie on the age eligibility rule though. Just because vultures like Federer and MouRAToglou think there should be an exception made for Coco doesn't mean the USTA etc. should just oblige.
Hingis was over at 22. Capriati at about 15 (before later coming back). It's not just that kids should be kids and that the mental pressure of being a pro athlete is too much. Their bodies are still developing! Kournikova - who believe it or not was actually rather talented for her age - had done permanent damage on her back and was retired at 21. Kathy Rinaldi and Andrea Jaeger were basically over before their 20s. Tatiana Golovin could have been one of the greats of her generation but her body was broken at 21 too.
And Patrick talking about psychotic parents and saying that we shouldn't make the rules that affect others just to avoid them... i'm sorry but if we can stop ONE child from getting abused, or being forced to become the sole breadwinner for her family, then it is worth it.

by Anonymous | reply 299 | August 27, 2019 5:33 PM |
I had really hoped Serena was going to fire Patrick after the debacle in the final last year but I think she doesn't want to make any major changes since she won't be playing that much longer. He is such a fucking attention whore and opportunist. He has completely capitalized on her name even though she was already massively successful and a lock for HoF well before she got with him. Now he's EVERYWHERE when you see tennis, constantly giving his opinions and his academy is flourishing. Can't stand him.

R212: He is not even near top 200 on juniors, Kodat and Damm are younger and they are top 10. And his results are nothing remarkable. Yes, he won the US national championships but that doens't make you a top junior.
Tsitsipas always find a way to make the matches more complicated. Unless he works to correct his serve he will never be a dominant player

by Anonymous | reply 309 | August 27, 2019 6:51 PM |
R304 Did you even read my post, you fucking moron? I guess reading comprehension isn't your strong suit. I'll reiterate. He's not a top junior in the ITFs is because he's received no support from the USTA, and without support from the USTA it would be cost prohibitive to do the whole circuit. Why hasn't he received any USTA support? It's because his dad is his coach, and he doesn't attend any of the top incubator academies. Politics.
He made it to the final of the J1 ITFs stop here in SoCal. He's #7 ranked in the US B18s, and he's the #1 college recruit in the nation. I bet he'd give Holger Rune a run for his money and ranking.
by Anonymous | reply 310 | August 27, 2019 6:55 PM |
R310: Insulting someone doesn't make you right, his results on itfs are very poor. I don't doubt he is a good player, but a junior top player i doubt it.
He played 4 25k and 2 15k, compare his results with Carlos Alcaraz who is younger and there's a big difference

I think we need to call the Next Gen on the ATP the mental midgets of the ATP. Most disappointing this year. After some promise from Tsitsipas and Thiem, Tsitsipas lost (although to an in-form Rublev) and Thiem is down two sets to one and trailing 3-1 in the fourth. Zverev is in a 5th set.

Actually with both Titsy and RBA gone from the same section, Kyrgios has a decent path to a second week run. If he can be bothered.

The rising star from Greece suffered a big setback Tuesday in the first round of the U.S. Open — then attacked the chair umpire for bias after being given a code violation for receiving coaching during the match.
The 21-year-old, who is considered one of the future stars of the sport and has been ranked as high as No. 5 in the world, is on a slide, admitting his “brain” is tired and questioning his motivation after losing in four sets, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, to Russia’s Andrey Rublev.
“I feel my mind is just — I don’t feel inspired,’’ said Tsitsipas, who also dealt with cramping during the loss. “I don’t feel like I’m chasing something.’’
Early in the match, Tsitsipas got a warning from the chair umpire.
“You’re all weirdos,’’ Tsitsipas appeared to say during his byplay. It’s not surprising he has become fast friends with the eccentric Nick Kyrgios.
Then the No. 8 seed stepped it up in his post-match press conference to a point where Williams and Kyrgios would be proud.
“The chair umpire was very incorrect in what he was telling me during the match,” Tsitsipas said. “I don’t know what this chair umpire has in specific against my team, but he’s been complaining and telling me that my team talks all of the time when I’m out on the court playing.
“I believe he’s not right, because I never hear anything of what my team says from the outside. I feel like some of them have preferences when they are on the court.”
Part of Tsitsipas’ team is his father, Apostolos, who serves as the primary coach.
“My father outside, who usually does the talking, he’s trying to pump me up by saying, ‘Come on,'” Tsitsipas said. “Raising my confidence by not coaching but by trying to boost me up. I believe the coach for my opponent does the same thing, which is normal.”
Tsitsipas lost in the first round at Wimbledon and in his first match of the last US Open tuneup in Cincinnati. He admitted he’s still stinging from his epic five-hour loss to Stan Wawrinka at the French Open.
“I remember achieving my career high of 5 in the world,’’ Tsitsipas said. “I was really excited when I saw that No. 5 and my name next to it. Then I realized that in order to stay up there, I have to be very, very consistent: semifinals, finals, winning titles. And I don’t know why that got in my brain a little bit. … I feel like I’m doing the same thing over and over again, and my brain can’t really take it anymore.’’

Stefanos doesn't "feel inspired"? WTF he's early 20s and started out the year having his best results. He hasn't won any big titles. How the fuck can he be uninspired?
I swear the younger players have the weakest mentality. I want to say it's because they get rich too quickly after 1 big result thanks to increased prize money and sponsors but that didn't happen to the likes of Nadal or Sharapova. They were highly touted as the next big phenoms in the early 2000s, handled the pressure, got rich quickly but kept on playing at a high level. Not sure why so many of the newcomer male and female players of the last decade haven't been able to do the same.

Pospisil takes out Khachanov!
Way to go Vasek!

Do the players go through media training so that they are sure to say how AMAZING the crowd at the Open is?

Popsicle team!
Not Hemsworth team.

LOL FAA loses. Are they too concerned about making NextGen finals instead of grand slams?
by Anonymous | reply 360 | August 28, 2019 12:04 AM |
Why is that funny, R360? Felix is one of the most intelligent, professional and articulate players in the ATP. He's already accomplished far more than nearly all of his peers and has set several records. I was hoping he'd win over the rapping, Putin-loving, slack-jawed poor excuse for a Canadian.

[quote]Gauff's parents and agent are just about the money. I doubt they know about Barilla's stance
What makes you think they would care in the first place?
by Anonymous | reply 362 | August 28, 2019 12:39 AM |
R362 so do you think Federer cares?
by Anonymous | reply 363 | August 28, 2019 12:40 AM |
awful loss for Khachanov. I'm going to guess his forehand let him down again.
by Anonymous | reply 364 | August 28, 2019 12:40 AM |
r362 No, I'm not naive enough to think that Federer cares either.
by Anonymous | reply 365 | August 28, 2019 12:43 AM |
To be perfectly honest, I'm not fond of Rafa's lavender accent pieces.
I hope he packed a different outfit for week 2.

I'm starting to like Alison Riske. I caught her post match interview up in the booth, and she seemed very likeable.
Also, does Sabalenka look a lot like Amelie Mauresmo?

Shockingly Monfils wins a straight set match! over Ramos-Vinolas

Is it better to be lucky loser or clay specialist?
by Anonymous | reply 370 | August 28, 2019 2:37 AM |
Pardon: Is it better to be lucky loser or qualifier?
by Anonymous | reply 371 | August 28, 2019 2:42 AM |
This Azarenka-Sabalenka match is intense. VERY LOUD grunting and hard hitting
Sabalenka prevails
hug at the end
Azarenka's horrible luck with big tournament draws continues

Told you, bitch, to wear white shorts! Bye bye bye!!!

I’m not rooting against Sloane Stephens but if she loses, her coach’s bad karma is probably to blame.
by Anonymous | reply 374 | August 28, 2019 3:15 AM |
Stephens out in straight sets
Kalinskaya is a decent hitter but her movement is not the best. Sloane won a lot of points when she had her on the run. Too often she hit the ball back to her and lost the point.

Kamau Murray is out!
Who’s still in?
PUIG!
by Anonymous | reply 376 | August 28, 2019 3:22 AM |
Sloane is awful lately.

Who are you guys supporting tomorrow? DL fav Borna or ex DL fav Grigor?
by Anonymous | reply 378 | August 28, 2019 3:37 AM |
Borna team

Pornstache in da house!

Johnson looks like he's about 55 years old.

God, I hope Kyrgios implodes. It would be even better to see him gall and get a compound fracture and roll around on the court with his femur jutting out.
by Anonymous | reply 384 | August 28, 2019 4:14 AM |
It's no secret that DL is overrun by people wallowing in Schadenfreude. This thread is a prime example.
by Anonymous | reply 385 | August 28, 2019 5:22 AM |
All the crazy loses of the mental midgets - Tsitsy, Thiem, Khach and FAA are creating an opening for Nick K. to get to the semis to play Rafa, potentially. This could be his moment if he holds it together.
by Anonymous | reply 386 | August 28, 2019 10:04 AM |
R385, I disagree. Watching sports is about wallowing in your OWN suffering.
by Anonymous | reply 387 | August 28, 2019 11:21 AM |
How so, R387?
by Anonymous | reply 388 | August 28, 2019 2:59 PM |
Right, R386, because Kyrgios is such a mental giant...
by Anonymous | reply 389 | August 28, 2019 3:00 PM |
R388, because you live through the torment of having favorite players go through bad runs of form.
by Anonymous | reply 390 | August 28, 2019 3:07 PM |
Bradley Klahn! Nice shirtless shots after his second set win. I like!
