The Middle Ages

The middle age would have been such a terrifying time to be alive on so many levels. Magic was real, a witch could fuck your shit up, disease everywhere, shit everywhere and general lawlessness.

Did kids do yoga?

by Anonymousreply 1August 18, 2019 8:31 PM

It was the Age of Faith, OP.

by Anonymousreply 2August 18, 2019 8:36 PM

[quote] Epidemics of diarrhoea (ergotism), known in medieval times as Saint Anthony’s Fire, were caused by eating rye that had been poisoned by fungi.

Im going to start calling it "Saint Anthony's Fire"

by Anonymousreply 3August 18, 2019 8:43 PM

It's around the corner.

by Anonymousreply 4August 18, 2019 8:49 PM

It could not possibly have been more terrifying than life in Trumpian America.

by Anonymousreply 5August 18, 2019 8:52 PM

Magic and witches were never real, dear. They were overly religious and superstitious.

by Anonymousreply 6August 18, 2019 9:11 PM

I think I was on my second Farewell Tour

by Anonymousreply 7August 18, 2019 9:14 PM

Well, late 19th century cities were pretty horrific. Actually, more filth and disease than the relatively rural Middle Ages.

by Anonymousreply 8August 18, 2019 9:17 PM

If you lived to be 50, you were a sage.

by Anonymousreply 9August 18, 2019 9:18 PM

magic wasn't real. but plague was, if that makes you feel better.

by Anonymousreply 10August 18, 2019 9:19 PM

Where the real magic happened, bitches!

Every age has its magical thinking. There's trickle down voodoo economics and austerity. Log Cabin Republicans. Nancy and the impeachment wand. The God of the Internet. Trans body dysmorphia. The celebrity of celebrity. Support animals. And so on.

by Anonymousreply 12August 18, 2019 9:31 PM

that is true, r12. We worship the rich and have the magical thought that giving them money will somehow help everyone. It's horseshit, but we will not let it go because it's dogma.

by Anonymousreply 13August 18, 2019 9:34 PM

The smells! I feel faint.

by Anonymousreply 14August 18, 2019 9:54 PM

I used to imagine the middle and dark ages as violent but it was somewhat cool to imagine yourself there, until one of you fuckers posted an article about the level of flea and lice infestation in the average person and the clergy. Holy shit. I automatically start scratching now when I see one of those old pictures depicting those times.

I still love you all though, (except you Boris).

by Anonymousreply 15August 18, 2019 10:01 PM

We need a new era of enlightenment.

by Anonymousreply 16August 18, 2019 10:04 PM

Where do you see that might come from r16. Maybe from a replacement of the old left-right dichotomy, if you were to ask me. It's a big topic you have brought up.

by Anonymousreply 17August 18, 2019 10:14 PM

Ah ...my high school years ...

by Anonymousreply 18August 18, 2019 10:48 PM

[quote]Disease everywhere, shit everywhere and general lawlessness.

Sounds a lot like San Francisco now.

by Anonymousreply 19August 18, 2019 10:49 PM

Frankly, r17,

...and I know I’ll get raked for this, but...

Marianne Williamson. She is the polar opposite of DJT. She may very well be the MLK of our era in that she consistently teaches peace, love & forgiveness.

The Age when my pagan brethren were maligned, marginalised, and then murdered en masse.

Bede & Nennius have a lot to answer for. I let Gildas off because I think he was well-intentioned and he was writing satirical polemic.

No penicillin. The pain must have been unimaginable.

by Anonymousreply 22August 22, 2019 5:41 PM

Looking back proves to us how far we advanced so far and yet how much stayed the same.

While we may have moved from religious doctrine and religious fear mongering (a witch! Burn her!) the stupid masses still exist and rather go to (internet) war for Trump and the Kardashians.

by Anonymousreply 23August 22, 2019 5:49 PM

Today we are told to believe in multiple genders or get doxed. Criticizing islam is blasphemy and a hate crime. They didn't put up with this shit 500 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 24August 22, 2019 5:51 PM

[quote] They didn't put up with this shit 500 years ago.

Who, the stupid peasants who couldn't even read? The ones who were told by the few what to believe and torture and burn anyone who didn't fit in?

Or do you mean the elite who controlled the masses with religion? The ones who got rid of anyone who threatened their status quo as superior authority figures?

by Anonymousreply 25August 22, 2019 5:56 PM

Do not engage an obvious troll.

by Anonymousreply 26August 22, 2019 6:02 PM

IM 58 AND I LOOK 40. IT'S NOT SO BAD.

by Anonymousreply 27August 22, 2019 6:07 PM

It was actually a prosperous time such as we have not known since. Why? Because usury (the loaning of money at interest, esp to kings/governments) was absolutely forbidden. As a result a man needed to work only about 4 months each year to meet all his needs. That is how the great cathedrals were built, by volunteers. It was a fabulous period. However the usurers write the history books so.........

by Anonymousreply 28August 22, 2019 6:09 PM

Every single decade was moving and evolving to the world we are now. And we will move forward, and evolve further, as well.

How about when we were hunter gatherers OP and we lucky to live to 35?

by Anonymousreply 33August 22, 2019 7:00 PM

Amen R29! In 10 to 20 years we’ll look back at these times and see that we’ve evolved. It doesn’t matter who is president or what politics are going on.

by Anonymousreply 34August 22, 2019 7:17 PM

Hang on to your ass, Fred. I think we're heading back that direction.
