William and Edward would be much more attractive if they wore their remaining hair quite short (even buzzed). unfortunately, balding aristocraztic men in the UK have this ugly habit of letting the hair on the side and back of the heads grow a little too long to look good..

I think people are not getting the meaning of 'fleeting.' As in lasting for a short time. Spader, Baldwin, and Gibson all held on to their looks for decades.
A perfect example is Leonard Whiting, who was beyond gorgeous in his late teens when he starred in Franco Zeffireli's Romeo & Juliet. But by his mid 20s, his looks had hit a wall.

This thread is co-owned by Prince William and Gary Cooper! Cooper was quite stunning when he was young, tall and lean and possessed of a beauty that was very masculine, but with a hint of feminine prettiness in the long eyelashes and full lips. His looks were fading by age 35, and had hardened into middle-aged droopiness by forty, but at least he could still act.
And Hugh Grant doesn't belong on this thread. Sure, his floppy-haired prettiness had faded by forty, but at that age he became handsome rather than pretty. Even now, he looks damn good for a man of 58.

A lot of the ones mentioned here never had ANY "beauty": Donald Trump, Ron Howard, Michael Stipe, Gerard Depardieu, Art Garfunkel, etc. And a lot of ones mentioned maintained their good looks until at least in their forties: Sean Connery, Marlon Brando, Mel Gibson, Alec Baldwin. But some who DID lose their looks early on are Leonard Whiting, Prince William, Prince Andrew. Poor Leonard Whiting went bald in their twenties and Williams had that same kind of early hair loss. Prince Andrew got pudgy and unprepossessing pretty soon. English guys don't seem to age well at all.

He might not be famous, but Hywel Bennett was gorgeous in his Twisted Nerve days. He even resembled Zac Efron a bit, but then he seemed to age really quickly and might have had booze bloat.
He's also a pale British guy, so maybe it is true that pale guys age poorly. If that's the case, why are we told to stay out of the sun and wear hats because the sun will age your skin? Wouldn't it do the opposite if you were pale and stayed out of the sun?

Gary Cooper got really haggard in middle age

He could suck a lemon from here to the Beverly Wiltshire Hotel!
He's got child-bearing lips!

Depp's looks lasted well into his forties, R243, so I'm not sure he belongs on this thread.
Of course his looks hit the wall at record speed around age fifty, but he was hot for an unusually long time.
by Anonymous | reply 248 | August 21, 2019 10:05 PM |
Gary Cooper's beauty probably peaked before 25 yo and it was a very high peak. It was a long slide from there but from that height it took years until he was handsome without beauty, and then finally just wasted.
by Anonymous | reply 250 | August 21, 2019 10:10 PM |
I agree Depp stayed good looking. I posted my recent nominations based on the world "beauty" and its usually young men who have that, and its often fleeting. Some beautiful young men turn into handsome mature men but many pretty men just fade away. And men can peak anywhere between 15 and 45! Handsome lasts much longer.

Did Casper Van Dien's son survive his suicide attempt? He was in a coma afterwards.

Paul Le Mat. In "American Graffiti" he had a rough hewn Stanley Kowalski type beauty to him, but his looks went downhill really fast, probably due to hard living. During the making of "American Graffiti" he (and Harrison Ford) were considered the cast hell raisers. Drinking, drugging, smoking, partying...it took its toll on him pretty quick. I think he was pretty messed up looking whole only in his thirties.
by Anonymous | reply 255 | August 21, 2019 10:16 PM |
I always hate when beautiful men turn ugly or rougher due to drugs or drinking or too much eating. It feels so avoidable in those cases. If I looked like some of these men in their prime, I'd take damn good care of myself.

Evan Peters. Flamed and flared out within 3 years?
by Anonymous | reply 263 | August 21, 2019 11:10 PM |
Gary Cooper may own this thread. He went from staggering beauty to looking like Lyndon B. Johnson, in about 20 years.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | August 21, 2019 11:28 PM |
R267 that's a good run, though. Fleeting would like 10 years or worse 5.

Paul Le Mat. In "American Graffiti" he had a kind of rough hewn Stanley Kowalski type of beauty, but it disappeared really fast. He (and Harrison Ford) were considered the hell raisers on the set of AG. I guess a life of drinking, drugging, smoking and partying did him in. He looks were pretty much gone in his thirties.

Christopher Reeve - Neautiful in Superman 1 and 2 but looks started to fade after that (before his horse-riding accident)
Henry Cavill - Balding.
Jude Law -Talented Mr. Ripley was his most beautiful self. Balding too.
closet case Jared Padalecki - First few years of the Supernatural show he looked great. Now, not much. Early caneface and receding hairline...

Colton had to stop eating to model. It's the way his face came into beauty. I seem to remember him discussing that.

He was smoking hot in The Lost Boys, and then lost his looks literally overnight.

He was James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor's son in that movie about the giant.

Dennis Hopper was never beautiful. That's like posting an old studio portrait of Angela Lansbury. The photographers were paid to flatter the subjects, by any means necessary (that might include retouching).

Russel Crowe was the hottest man alive in 2000 when he filmed Gladiator....but he liked to drink and overeat and let himself go. He had a good run in the 1990's and hit a wall 7 years after Gladiator was released.

The ladies - Kate Moss. She's turning it around with apparently some laser and minor surgery, but for a few years she was looking extremely rough due to smoking, drinking and tanning.
Her pal Jade Jagger never smoked, no idea about drinking, but she was stunning in her 20s and 30s and looks pretty bad in her 40s.
by Anonymous | reply 293 | August 22, 2019 6:24 AM |
Rupert Everett was gorgeous when he was younger. Why did he hit the wall so hard? He isn't overweight, neither has he lost his hair.
by Anonymous | reply 294 | August 22, 2019 8:33 AM |
It's simply that Rupert's face is very strong and it hit a sweet spot when he was young. Then later on, it didn't get mature man handsome As for his contemporary Hugh Grant - Grant has terribly freaky eyes. He wasn't even gorgeous as a college boy - though he was sexy in posh douche way. Then he suddenly had a couple years of it all working - maybe clever cinematographers and movie magicians helped. Fortunately with him, it settled into something mature and handsome.

Michael Stype and Ray Liotta had horribly pockmarked skin even when they were quite young. Liotta hit his peak in Field of Dreams. Speaking of which, Costner was a beautiful young man as well.

R282 Jason Patric still looked handsome in 1991's After Dark My Sweet. He even had a purposely disheveled appearance for the part. Like most other men losing his hair affected his overall looks. I think I would still categorize him as handsome today, his bone structure and beautiful eyes remain.

I was surprised when I was older and finally saw photos of a very young John Wayne and the spectacular beauty of a young Gary Cooper. Did not like their contemporary looks at all - but damn - they was fine when young actors.
