To our beloved plane crash troll and everyone else-If you ever want to be thankful for being alive

This memorial will do it.

One of the worst plane crashes in US history-

You may be humbled by the number of people, the sheer horror, and at how time marches on-

Rest in peace. And I hope these souls are all reincarnated, healthy, and filled with joy-

I remember hearing about this happening. I was a junior in high school, and the news came during our lunch break (I was in California). It was terrifying, and I swore never to fly on a DC-10 after that. I was strictly an L1011 boy!

It was truly a HORRIBLE crash by US standards at that time.

And as I am a plane crash troll in training, I have always followed them, but this crash- as bad as it was- has NEVER had any in depth stories about the victims, as it was 1979, ect-

I am very grateful that the Tribune really did such a lovely job 40 years later.

Life IS precious, as shitty as it can be.

OP, isn't it THE worst plane disaster in the US?

Meanwhile, the worst plane disaster worldwide was the Tenerife Disaster in two years earlier. 583 people died in that one. As with many air disasters, it was a chain of unlucky events and/or bad choices that led to it.

R3, That is what I meant "by US standards" and yes that crash in Japan in 1985 and Tenerife in 1977 are the worst in terms of death toll, by far-

Wow! The daughter of Cyd Charisse (Sheila Charisse). I don't remember anyone discussing that at the time.

by Anonymousreply 5August 17, 2019 9:25 PM

Correction = daughter-in-law

by Anonymousreply 6August 17, 2019 9:27 PM

The Japan crash was the single worst involving a single aircraft. The toll at Tenerife was higher, but it involved two planes, and there were 61 survivors on the Pan Am plane.

There were two weird things about that Tribune tribute. The first - which I only know because of the Mayday episode about Flt 191, was that the Captain, Walter Lux, was a very last minute replacement. He wasn't scheduled to fly, but the regular pilot asked him if he would mind filling in, and he agreed. That wasn't mentioned in the article.

The other thing is that there were two TV producer-writers, a married couple, who were killed. I couldn't find a mention of that in the story, so I guess they are among the people who are listed with no bio information.

R8- Who are they?? What are their names?

by Anonymousreply 9August 17, 2019 9:42 PM

I knew about 3 people on that flight, they were headed to the ABA convention.

by Anonymousreply 10August 17, 2019 9:49 PM

R10, It seems 1/3 of those passengers were part of that ABA convention-

Did you see them in the memorial?

by Anonymousreply 11August 17, 2019 9:59 PM

Horrible story.

by Anonymousreply 12August 17, 2019 10:05 PM

The problem is, I can't remember their names. They got a lot of press in LA at the time because they had written (or produced?) a major TV hit that had ended a year or two earlier.

by Anonymousreply 13August 17, 2019 10:19 PM

R11 yes, Doug Ruble was one, the others worked in a bookstore near me.

Chicago's O'Hare airport is the busiest airport in the world. Busier than NYC and London.

The DC-10 was cursed.

I worked with a guy who was booked on that flight, but got caught up in traffic and missed the flight. He was very effected by it. He told me.. “ I should be dead”.

Want to talk about maudlin?

This video takes you inside the SwissAir plane that crashed in 1998 in Nova Scotia-

Very haunting to know that this plane crashed less than one year after this video-

Dale Earnhardt Jr. wants everyone to know that even though he was in a horrible plane crash, he still likes to relax with a friend, on his boat.

The man who's parents died in a 1962 plane crash, the same one Linda McCartney's mother was on. Wow, how unlucky can one family be????

by Anonymousreply 22August 19, 2019 9:47 PM

The Stogels. It is truly bizarre- the chances of that happening-

Podcast about this crash. Actually, this dude did one on the other accidents listed here - Tenerife and the JAL flight.

R24- That guy didn't do much but rehash the basics. However , he did explain the engine of that aircraft and how it broke apart, which was actually interesting-
