The Gays and Tennis Part 41 C (2nd alternative to the original Part 41 and Part 41 B, both of which are payrolled)
I have to open a third thread now as I'm locked out of Part B too. oh well
Anyway so we see a bunch of #NextGen struggling at the moment to find momentum. Some of the guys who have shown the most promise are now losing to non-top players. A. Zverev had 20 double faults in his loss today
I really hope we're not on track for another big 3 Cincinnati and USO domination scenario.

Why Muriel hates tennis so much. She does that all the time, and there's nothing rare on the tennis threads, in fact there are a lot less trolls than in other threads.
Going with Miomir, he seems a nice and inteligent young man, i found funny that question he made to Federer that started with the "you were playing pro tennis before i was born".
He has several advantages, the number one of the world is from serbia too, so there's no pressure of becoming the next big thing because they already have the number one. He was always one of the best players of his age, but not the best, so there are expectations but not the spotlight on him, and even less when Shapovalov or De Miñaur had better ranking and results. And climb the rankings (he will be top 50 next year) but he did it gradually, not with a big result on a big tournament (at least not yet).
Given the established next gen are stalling we need new ones

RE: Kyrgios. I hope he gets injured and retires before he has a psychotic break. He's obviously a violent, unstable person.
I think I heard/lip read, " I hate this, I want to go home". He's electric, but if you don't want to be there, I don't want to watch you. He plays with disdain and it's insulting to the fans and other players. We are not going to put up with that shit in NY, especially if he's up against a fan favorite. I see on-court fisticuffs and jail in his future. Calling an Irishman "potato" repeatedly, is a fucking racist slur. It would be like calling a jew "gas chamber". Last week he threw a water bottle at the chair, this week he spits and calls him a fucking tool?

^Yeah, the Bronx is free, 25 will get you first row. I'm shocked about this tournament. Google map tells me I live 3.5 miles from there. I've lived uptown for 20 years, including 4 years in the Bronx, and I didn't even know this place existed. I've been past the park, but never had a reason to go there. If anyone makes the journey, go on Wed when the Bronx Zoo is free, have lunch in Little Italy, cruise hot latinx.

Kyrgios has been fined $113,000 for 5 separate examples of unsportsmanlike conduct, 1 of verbal abuse, an audible obscenity and for leaving the court unauthorised during last night’s match with Karen Khachanov. The ATP also says it is now considering whether additional action is warranted under the Player Major Offence section of the code. That could result in an additional fine and/or suspension.

R24 He deserves it! It's funny that his countryman PCB (who I also like) made the top 10 before RBA did. The latter is just a much bigger threat on the tour.
Sevastova will have her last chance to break into the top 10 (before her US Open SF points come off) this week. With Sabalenka out of Cinci and defending a title from New Haven last year (and not entered in the Bronx), I think Sevastova is almost guaranteed the spot unless Madison Keys wins Cincinnati and laps her in the points. She's had a good 12 months and a terrific comeback from retirement - was teaching kids in Latvia after leaving the sport due to injuries just three years ago.
Surprised Vee was able to come back. Would love to see her go all the way here, but Halep or Keys would be a tough ask. Madison would be a preferable opponent, i'm sure.

R32 I don't understand your complaint about Courier's accurate analysis of RBA vs. Tiafoe. Tiafoe does have more weapons. He has a bigger serve, moves just as well and hits his groundstrokes harder. RBA is simply more consistent. That's how he won. Tiafoe kept making errors. Courier didn't say Tiafoe was a better player than RBA. He said if both played at their best, Tiafoe would win. Tiafoe is still very young and inconsistent. Courier is totally right. RBA is a very solid player but he's not going to hit most players off the court.

R38: RBA won because right now is a way better player than Tiafoe, as simple as that.
Kyrgios has more skills than 99% of the players, but he is not a better player. Being a good player goes way beyond the shots and the serve, some people seem to think that bein unconsistent is something easy to correct but when you are on the circuit for several years without any sign of consistency, being unconsistent is simply what you are as a tennis player.
The most you can aspire is to be like Wawrinka, king of unconsistent players, he is good from time to time, but when he is good he is very very good

#53 thank you! just because someone has more or bigger weapons, doesn't mean that they are a better player or win! much much more goes into a tennis player and them winning!.. hence why RBA is ranked 11 and tiafoe is only ranked 52... heck their are players who have TONS of weapons or better weapons then top players and yet they are NOT top ranked players... courier offered a simplistic simpleton superficial surface comment as not opinion but as FACT.. he was wrong...he even mentioned how his 2 handed backhand was "homemade" and some tried to change him and so on and so on.. yes, he became a grand slam champion and number one, but like all tennis greats who have a one way mindset, he COULD HAVE BEEN EVEN BETTER if he had listen to those who tried to change his 2 handed backhand! he blocks this out completely!....

It's like watching highlights, i remember a Shapo-Tsitsipas match last year on clay, the highlights were 80% about Shapovalov, he won most of big points, but if you watch the match, Tsitsipas was clearly superior all the time and he won the match clearly.
It's not about having big weapons it's about knowing how to use them
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 16, 2019 2:03 PM
|
I'll just add that it's not like RBA is some weaponless pusher. When it's clicking, his forehand is extremely dangerous and he can direct it anywhere on the court even from behind the baseline. Not many players can hit through Novak's defence so well, the hitting in Doha was huge and flat. He's not in the typical mould of the "Spanish clay court grinder".
Tiafoe may have more power but his wind-up takes about ten minutes just to hit a routine forehand. He's got an incredible body but he always looks gassed just a few games in. Can serve big (certainly bigger than RBA) but he's also very breakable.
I love players with weapons but it's also important to know how to use them. And yeah, it's not like RBA is Wozniacki.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | August 16, 2019 2:09 PM

Again, Tiafoe is still very young. Courier didn't say he's a better player than RBA. All he said was if both played at their peak, Tiafoe would win. We've seen Tiafoe defeat some top 10 players in the last year. He's still very inconsistent. Let's see where he is in a few years. Obviously RBA is the better player day in, day out. Courier wasn't arguing that.
Take an extreme example of Keys. If she were consistent most weeks of the season, she'd probably be #1. She hits the hardest on average groundstrokes in the women's game, has a pretty big serve and has improved her touch/variety. She destroyed Halep in the first set last night before losing her way in the second and fighting through an up and down third set. Keys so far has yet to show consistency from tournament to tournament but when she's on, it's nearly impossible to beat her. Halep's game relies on consistency and obviously so far she's a better player than Keys. That doesn't mean the match is on Halep's racket.
Other examples in the past include Fernando Gonzalez. THE HARDEST forehand I've ever seen. When he was on he could hit players off the court but he played such low risk it didn't usually work against the very best players.
Courier wasn't taking anything away from RBA and there's no reason to get upset about his commentary.

all i am saying is you can have all the weapons in the world, it doesn't mean anything if you don't know how and when to use them or are lacking in other attributes..
kind of reminds me of a long ago interview that navratilova did (espn sportscentury show that they did on evert and martina) when martina was talking about evert and said "she didn't really have any weapons"! OH REALLY? THE greatest lob in history, the greatest drop shot in history, the greatest passing shots in history, incredible footwork, incredible anticipation, perhaps the greatest mind in history, among the purest technically sound strokes in history and she had "no weapons".. what because she didn't hit bombs as serves and wasn't blatantly super athletic?...their are other definitions of weapons...evert's weapons were a combination of the cerebral as well as athleticism... that is what i mean, people do not dig deep enough and only speak superficially..

Pliskova really is the queen of taking advantage of an easy draw and flopping against the first remotely decent or in-form player she meets. She beat Wang YaFan and fought it out against Rebecca Peterson, but you knew as soon as Kuznetsova took it to a 3rd set she was toast.
Meanwhile Sveta has beaten Pliskova, Sloane, Yastremska, and Sevastova. All wildly different players and top seeds at the slams. A well deserved SF run. She's back into the top 100 and I liked her quip about her visa issues in the interview.

Naomi retires soon after beginning the 3rd set with Kenin. She had given her a breadstick in set 2 and looked to be gunning for a comeback, but seemed to tweak something in the legs when she landed from her serve. She walked off in the middle of the game to get treatment. Her team were all shouting at her to retire...... scenes.
Kenin will play the winner of Keys / Venus in the SF.
Eugenie Bikini loses in round 1 of Bronx qualies to Kaia Kanepi. Not a shameful loss, but her losing streak is now up to 11. Bit unlucky to draw Kaia, even though she hasn't played since Wimbledon. I didn't see the Federer match, but reading about it made it seem like Rublev played incredibly well. Certainly the stats showed way more winners than errors. But the write-up did mention Federer was shanking a lot of balls.
I'm a big fan of the talent that Nick Kyrgios has. Not a big fan of his craziness and lack of discipline. I'd kill to have 1/100th of the talent that guy has. What a shame to see him waste it.
I can only hope no easy draw for Pliskova at the US Open. But in particular, Nadal better have a tough draw. He did last year and it wore him out for the semis.

I would not be surprised if Kyrgios gets a suspension on top of the fine. Spitting on the ump is a huge no-no. The Bronx qualifying draw is crazy. There are players of all rankings in there from 300s to 400s even I saw a 700s and there's the return of currently unranked journeywoman veteran Galina Voskoboeva (who also lost). By bad luck of the draw, Bouchard and Kanepi drew each other and Kaia took it in 3 sets. Also in another bad luck moment, Stosur drew Parmentier and got crushed by her. Pretty pathetic for a slam champ to lose round 1 of a qualifying draw in a small tournament. The 4 of those players would have beaten a lot of others entered in the draw.
The main draw is interesting. #17 Q. Wang heads the field with Strycova as #2 after a late CSN withdrawal. Buzarnescu who's struggling to win any matches this year (like Bouchard) is there. Vandeweghe was given a WC and drew Tomljanovic. Washed up Petkovic is playing too and crazy unpredictable Giorgi. Drama queens Putintseva and Cornet could meet in the second round. San Jose winner Zheng is playing too.

I'm also confused as to why the Bronx draw has THREE rounds of qualifying? It's an international. Even Premier tournament San Jose was only two rounds. Was the goal to get as many scrubs in the city as possible? Knowing full well that these girls are even too low ranked to play slam qualies.
Just like the qualifying draw, in the main draw the few good players have landed in close proximity too. Meanwhile there are THREE qualifier vs qualifier spots. You've gotta be kidding. I almost think they should seed half the draw.
Back over in Cincy, did anyone see Madison Keys just beat the shit out of Venus? 31 winners to 3. :( Venus wasn't serving well, but even if she was, this was one of those days where Madison was absolutely unplayable. Still a good tournament for Granny, hope she can have a strong US Open.

Winston Salem draw is out
Paire and WC Shapovalov are the top 2 seeds. Shockingly, Isner is skipping. Other WCs went to #3 Tiafoe, Murray and Berdych. Other players of note are: Humbert, PCB, Sonego, Sousa, Ruud, Evans, Krajinovic, Lopez, Hurkacz, Querrey, Rublev, Kecmanovic, Cecchinato, Jarry, Bublik and Monteiro.
Murray will play Sandgren in rd1 while Berdych plays Seppi.

Novak was pissed. It's obvious that Medvedev faked injury. "Oh, my God", grimacing in pain, getting a quick massage then blasting winners from all over. Good lesson for Novak, not to let it happen again. Remember Monfils, playing rope-a-dope because he knew he couldn't win. No one can beat Novak when he is on so you have to take him off his game by any means. It's shitty that the commentators know it but can't hardly even hint at the truth. "Boy, we could all use a massage like that" or something.
More rest for Novak. He bought a new place in NY, gtfo of Ohio.

People are talking a lot about the future of russian tennis, but curiously there's only three russian players on the top 100. Of course two are top 10 and the 3 are very young.
Which is curiously the opposite situation of Spain (second country with most players in the top 100 after France), which hast two top 10 players too (both over 30). Only 3 of the spanish players are under 30 and only one is under 23

I, too, would be surprised if the Big 3 all go out before the semis at the US Open. Not likely to happen. I think based on his play in Cincinnati, Federer is vulnerable. Dkokovic had his elbow looked at, so I'm worried about him going best-of-five for two weeks. That sets up my worst nightmare--another Nadal Slam win. I hope Rafa's draw is tough at least.,
by Anonymous | reply 128 | August 18, 2019 3:34 PM
|
R128 it also depends where Federer falls into the draw...Djoko or Nadal's side. Also, people were talking about nadal getting close to #1....what happens now that Djoko is not defending? It is getting close, but by how much? Does anyone know?
by Anonymous | reply 129 | August 18, 2019 3:40 PM

R129, Djokovic is currently at 12,325 but he's losing some points since he won Cincinnati last year. He'll be at 11,685. Nadal is at 7,945. That's a 3,740 point cushion heading in to the US Open. But Nadal didn't play last fall after his semi-final loss to Delpo at the USO, so he has no points to defend. In contrast, Djokovic won Shanghai and got to the final of the Paris Indoors, both Masters 1000s. Djokovic also got to the finals of the ATP Finals season-ending tournament.
Nadal is scheduled to play in five tournaments after the USO--two Masters 1000s, two ATP Tour 500s, and the ATP Finals. Nadal could conceivably gain enough points to overtake Djokovic, particularly if he wins the US Open, which is a distinct possibility given the state of the younger generation, Federer's play in Cincinnati, and Djokovic with a possible elbow issue. I think Nadal's biggest issue this fall will be how his body holds up to the toll of all the pounding these hard court tournaments inflict. Nadal has not traditionally done that well in the fall, but he's had a few falls where he's done well. We'll see.
R101, I agree it seemed strange to see Medvedev struggle so much with Nadal's high-kicking shots given Medvedev's height of 6'6. But Medvedev is really more of a defender. Medvedev does have a big first serve, but I remember when he played Nadal he barely got it in. Nadal is a better mover and better defender, so Medvedev matches up poorly with Nadal. His only hope would be to serve amazingly well and also go for a big more off the ground.

Right now i highly doubt Federer has any chances against any of them. I know he defeated Rafa outside of clay in recent years, but Rafa's level on Montreal was way higher than Federer this week
R129: Rafa is ahead Djokovic on the race, so Djokovic really needs to get more points that Rafa to be number one of the year. Watching the ranking it seems he has a massive advantage but if Rafa don't get injured things will be close.
I think Roger is vulnerable, and if there's a GS were someone could pull a surprise on the other 2 this is the US Open.
I watched a video about Corentin Moutet and he seems to love poetry. Not exactly something i would have guess watching his bratty behaviour on court (of course Eric Cantona loved Rimbaud and that never stopped him from kicking Crystal Palace supporters)

it'll be interesting to see if any of #NextGen, especially those who have been slumping lately, rediscover their form at the USO.
It's rather interesting that Tsitsipas started the year off in such fine form but is now slumping as badly as A. Zverev.
Then you have De Minaur who hasn't had a great record after winning DC this summer
Tiafoe, Shapovalov have been a mess. Both are playing in Winston Salem in the hopes of gaining some momentum
FAA is the youngest and has been up and down this summer as well
Medvedev, the oldest of #NextGen is the one who's most consistent now but I'm hoping the others do something consequential at the USO
by Anonymous | reply 132 | August 18, 2019 5:18 PM

I don't think Tsitsipas is slumping as badly as Zverev.
Tsitsipas was semifinalist two weeks ago and he was playing well. Zverev is playing badly all this year. The greek lost to Hurcazc and Struff both dangerous players and both in three sets. Bad results for sure but hardly a slump. Alexander lost against Kecmanovic, who is a promising player but was destroyed in the following round by RBA.
Anyway, on a GS can happen anything. Halep wasn't doing well and she never was the best at grass but she was able to win at Wimbledon

Medvedev's face grows on me. I even find those cheek dimples really cute when he smiles. But the fast receding hairline is not going to help his looks. If he does nothing against it, his fivehead will turn into a sixhead before he knows it. Hopefully he and Martina Hingis won't have babies.

Since he's in his mid-20s now Medvedev is a bit elderly for NextGen. He should and seems to be entering his prime time. His callipygian attributes are worth another mention, though he's shown an occasional inclination toward dickishness.
Let's hope USO is the time for the slumpy NextGen-ers to snap out of it.

He is not mid 20's yet. He is 23, i think nextgen is considerered for players born in 1996 and after.
Of course they we'll need a new term soon because FAA, Molleker and Kuhn are four years younger and that's a full generation in tennis years.
Rublev is the only young russian who is not married. It's curious how many young players are married right now, i think it was not that common in recent years

Keys with her slightly injured leg and all still won in straight sets. Kuznetsova served for both sets but couldn't finish it off. Now she is 0-4 vs. Keys and 0-8 sets

Kuznetsova served for both sets at 5-4 before choking. :( Great week anyway, and not much you can do when Keys' home runs are landing within the lines. I think Madison hit about 13 aces today.
Nice to see Sloth Stephens out of the top 10, but Sevastova must be feeling pissed at herself. Narrowly lost to Kuznetsova in the first round this week, and then Kuznetsova chokes in the final to Keys who (at the start of the week) was a long shot to overtake her. SF points to defend in Flushing Meadows too.
I think Medvedev is kind of cute but he NEEDED that haircut he got at the start of this year. His previous look with the 6head and the greasy Chernobyl scientist fringe was not hot. He still gives off a horrible attitude but his consistency is paying off, unlike the more talented players of his generation.

Medvedev will peak at the US Open and will be included in the ATP Finals at the end of the year. Watch and learn new gen bitches, it's what you wear that makes you a champion. White see-through shorts and white briefs. Wear compression shorts and you will be doomed.
Medvedev reached a second consecutive Masters final at the Cincinnati Masters after beating defending champion Djokovic for the second time. In the final, he defeated David Goffin for his first Masters title.

The thing that will help Djokovic the most at the US Open is that he lost RG. Imagine the amount of pressure he would face if he was contending for a CYGS. Actually you don't have to imagine it, you'd just have to remember how the pressure got the best of Serena backj in 2015. She played horribly almost the whole tournament because the stakes were so important only to crash to a player whose best performance against Serena was a 6-4 6-3.
So losing RG was disappointing for him but at least the only stake now for Djokovic is to improve his slam count to 17 instead of being the first player to take the first CYGS since Rod Laver in 1962.

Medvedev cheats again:
Here’s what happened. #34 ranked Johnson won the first set 63 and was up a break in the second set. Both players were resting on a changeover and the chair umpire called “time.” That’s when Medvedev, ATP 50, suddenly asked for a medical timeout. It took the physio three or four minutes to get to the court and a further delay ensued. Johnson was understandably irritated at Medvedev’s stall tactic which of course was designed to distract the American’s following service game.
And of course it did. Medvedev broke Johnson who then shouted across the net at the young Russian who is based in Nice, France since age seven, “Nice injury time out you piece of sh**!” – according to the photographer who was present.

Not surprised that Sven dumped Sloane. Presumably he gets a percentage of her prize money, so he might as well work with a player who actually intends to try and make it past round 1 instead.
Deplorable Ryan Harrison losing is delicious.

OK now with 2 confirmed bigoted incidents, Medvedev is officially a piece of shit. He was starting to lose his cool yesterday too when Goffin had break point in the last game. He threw his racket. He's going to eventually have a very tough loss and show his true colors again. He's probably a Putin lover anyway

Thiem and Zverev have aged beyond NextGen qualification. Thiem in particular is a good 6 or 7 years older than some of the current NextGen crop. In a couple of weeks he'll be 26, the same age as Tomic.
Regarding NextGen contenders, keep in mind that Federer never got beyond a GS quarterfinal until he was nearly 22. A lot of players these days aren't reaching their stride until past age 25. Some aren't peaking until past age 30.
Youzhny isn't a bad coach choice for Shapo. Maybe he'll add some consistency to Shapo's game.

I agree. I think Shapo could be amazing with more maturity in his game.
I couldn't care less about his Russian roots. His mother is ex-pat Russian. He's a fine kid from a good family.

The Colonel will teach Shapo to crush his own eye socket instead of the that of the chair umpire.
