Why isnt the 25th amendment out there in public discussion any more? Call out the incompetent.

Wake up Dems. Fight on multiple fronts. Don't whine it can't be done. That's not the point. Learn to take the offensive.

I’m with you, OP.

You might as well ask why space aliens haven’t kidnapped Trump or why God hasn’t struck him dead.

by Anonymousreply 2August 13, 2019 9:10 PM

What is this 25th amendment?

by Anonymousreply 3August 13, 2019 9:15 PM

The Twenty-fifth Amendment (Amendment XXV) to the United States Constitution deals with issues related to presidential succession and disability.

Look DP, you should be making this common knowledge.

R3 is svetlana, dont listen to her.

by Anonymousreply 5August 13, 2019 9:24 PM

Because its application was never other than one more fantasy, out of so many others it's been forgotten.

by Anonymousreply 6August 13, 2019 9:26 PM

It requires a 2/3 super majority in both the House and Senate, while removal via impeachment "only" requires a 2/3 super majority in the Senate. It is a more difficult and unlikely path than even impeachment. Reagan's cabinet drafted the paperwork when his dementia became advanced, but did not pursue it.

by Anonymousreply 7August 13, 2019 9:40 PM

If the cabinet and VP got behind it, well, they would work with Mitch beforehand anyway.

by Anonymousreply 9August 16, 2019 4:45 PM

Pence would never go along with it

by Anonymousreply 10August 16, 2019 4:47 PM

I wasn't thinking of his own cabinet pursuing it but the dems.

by Anonymousreply 11August 17, 2019 10:41 PM

It has to be the Cabinet that initiates this. And the VP must be onboard. The Congress would be involved later, if Trump contests it.

This has to be restructured. Maybe something like, if a majority of the Speaker, Senate President, Sec of State and Defense, VP, Sec of Treasury... Something like that.

It can’t be too easy, but we can’t let partisanship keep a lunatic in office.

The same for the electoral college. Keep the college, but maybe, have States assign electors based on congressional delegation, rather than states being winner take all. As it is, there are maybe, 10 states who’s votes matter, and 20 states (with some overlap) where fundraising matters. The rest can pound sand.

I live in Massachusetts, and it only matters as Boston is a media market for New Hampshire, which is, inexplicably, one state whose votes matter. Massachusetts is one state whose funds matter. So, I’m in the loop. Not so for many other places.

Scaramucci says Trump will drop out of the race in March 2020.

by Anonymousreply 13August 17, 2019 11:16 PM

R12 With the cabinet being there in name only what with interims and all how can this issue be kept alive? The media goes for clicks and cannot be the go-to for issues. Maybe the Democratic Party needs to use social media differently to connect with the people directly.

by Anonymousreply 14August 18, 2019 10:20 PM

R14 asks an interesting question. As I understand it, with most of the cabinet being "acting", they couldn't actually pull the trigger on this. Yet another reason Trump probably doesn’t want anyone permanent installed in key positions.

The Constitution needs an upgrade.

The right wing agree, and are working on it. They would thank you for your support.

Forget the 25th Amendment. It was not drafted with this situation in mind and it does not function to address this situation. It is there to provide a way to go forward if the president has a massive stroke or heart attack or some other acute, discrete health problem, as in if JFK had not died from his gunshot wounds, but had lingered in an incapacitated state.

The Cabinet secretaries can invoke this power, but as soon as they do, the President can respond that he is fully able to carry out the duties of his office... and that's that. He's back to being the President again. Congress can then hold hearings, but Mitch McConnell has already announced he will not have such a thing in the Senate.

In any event, Trump has pushed out so many Cabinet secretaries and is relying on so many unconfirmed acting secretaries, it's not even clear of the 25th Amendment could be invoked AT ALL at this point, no matter how serious and disabling the President's health might be.

So until Pee Brain is brain dead at Walter Read, forget the 25th Amendment.

by Anonymousreply 18August 18, 2019 11:02 PM

Another, more practical, solution would be to have an election next year. People could talk about and focus on that instead.

by Anonymousreply 19August 18, 2019 11:58 PM

His speech perseveration, lack of context, confusion, perambulation and lies all point to pathology.

If The 25th Amendment is continually discussed in the context of his gross abnormalities, this may aid to lessen his seeming normalisation in public consciousness.

I'm all for keeping it in the public sphere, even if it is not pursued by his sycophants. By continually reminding him and others of his pathology, this is another method to chink away at his armour.

#25th Amendment

Repeat:

#25th Amendment

by Anonymousreply 20August 19, 2019 12:40 AM

It doesn't work that way, M.D.

When one person calls for the invocation of the 25th Amendment, a half million other people start seething about Nancy Pelosi not using the 25th Amendment to oust Pee Brain. I suspect it is the Boris and Natashas of the world who raise the matter, again and again, just to raise the level of frustration on the Left and, more specifically, the level of frustration with Democratic leadership.

The 25th Amendment does not apply to this set of circumstances. Bringing it up serves no good purpose for those opposed to Trump. If you want to talk about his mental and emotional problems, talk away. But none of them, in their current state, will be addressed by the 25th Amendment.
