Veronica Lake might not have worn her hair up, but it certainly isn't "just plain straight hair." Her whole head would have been set into curls, and then gently brushed into that shape. She didn't leave for work with wet hair, and that's just how it naturally dried. She wore her hair down, yes, but it was very carefully styled.
