OP, maybe give him the benefit of the doubt? It's possible he has a difficult situation at home and is fearful of losing his job, so he over-compensates. I've experienced a few coworkers like this in my time.

It's because he has no self esteem and likes to be praised at work because it's the only place he probably feels "appreciated" even if he's being used like a tool.

Welcome to corporate America OP, there is an endless supply of guys like Eric no matter where you go or how far up the ladder you get.

I have liked, and gotten along, with most Erics I have known. Kevins, OTOH, no, those are crazy motherfuckers who hate me, or whom I loathe. I did meet a sane Kevin (I think) lately, and I don't know what to do about it. Fortunately, he's not a romantic Kevin.

People who climb really midway up the corporate ladder are usually awful, unimaginative and jerky. The people who usually rise to the top are interesting, smart and innovative thinkers. The people who rise to the very top are usually charming sociopaths.

Eric sounds like the mid level kind. People can tell he’s a kissass. They just love the fact that he’s killing himself for them.

I hate people who always have an excuse. They tend to be the type that believes that they can do no wrong and never, ever truly apologizes for anything.

OP, I had a guy who kept stealing my ideas by restating what I proffered in his own words. Eventually, I had to start passive-aggressively joking immediately after every time he did. That's the only way he would stop. I really channelled AnnE Hathaway.

Only work hard for yourself. As previous poster said, no one is indispensable. I put up with a sociopath (literally) only to be laid off after 19 years. Moved on, got another job.

I used to be like Eric, a million years ago when I was 20. I really wanted to work my way to a better position. And because my mother was a demanding person, I was a people pleaser. Came in early, stayed late, created new duties for myself, hoping to show them how dedicated I was, etc. I cringe now.

Eventually I learned my lesson.

If Eric is young, there’s a good chance he’ll be abused and exploited and that’s punishment enough. If he’s older, feel free to be scornful.
