DL hates them and so do I. I’m turning 40 this year and have none. I don’t mind them on other people but the thought of the inking my skin disturbs me. Why do so many people do it?

by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 1, 2019 2:19 AM |
Who knows why people get tattoos. Some people think they're pretty; some think having one makes a statement. It makes some people feel "special." Then there are the hard-core ones, who have dozens, to "express" themselves or show the world how tough they are (tattoos are very prevalent among criminals and gang members). I think for some it's a form of self-mutilation. At any rate, people who have lots of tattoos seem to be mentally ill. I myself would never have one. Have somebody take a needle and use it to ink some design permanently into my flesh? Not for me.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 1, 2019 2:24 AM |
It does amaze me that 20-30 something gay men can live in such denial or avoidance of the fact that they are going to get old and saggy. I was very aware in my 20s that I was in my prime but eventually my looks would fade. Would have never gotten a tattoo.

Criminality? Lower class? Mental illness? You lot sound like the stuffiest, oldest, most joyless bunch of maiden aunts on the internet. I'm glad to be written off by the likes of the sad spinsters on this thread - you all sound like tedious, pretentious bores anyway. People have been tattooing their skin for thousands of years and there are all sorts of reasons why they do it. I have tattoos that are decades old and they still look fine - they don't see a lot of sunlight and I keep very fit, so there's no sagging or fading yet. But do keep shouting into the wind about those awful awful tattoos, and I'm sure everyone with ink will see the error of their ways one day.

Personal expression, just like earrings, jewelry, the choices people make with their clothing or hairstyles. To make sweeping generalisations about such a large and diverse group seems very small minded. Whether you like them or not, body art and modification has been going on for eons, and in many different cultures. Criminal mindset, and mental illness are rather comical instant attributions.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 1, 2019 4:32 PM |
Stretching your ears until they drag on the floor or break open, piercing your body all over and covering yourself in ink are not signs of a well adjusted person. I don’t see mental illness per se, I see a desperate scream for attention. And you’re not going to get it from me.

I think many people get tattoos as a mark of rebellion and to look edgy. They're a good thing for hiding scars.
I don't judge people who have tattoos but I don't have any. For me it would be like wearing a patterned shirt I could never change. I would get tired of looking at it. Also, tattoos don't age well. The fade and sag and wrinkle.
I have seen few tattoos that are genuinely beautiful. Those I like on others. Too many are poorly executed or corny themes. That said, one of my favorite people is heavily tattooed and has gage earrings. He's a phlebotomist and expert at drawing blood, plus he's engaging and funny. He's beautiful. and kind. I always request him when I need blood drawn.

r65 an absence of tattoos doesn't make the schoolmarms in this thread joyless - sniffily passing judgement on a massive and diverse group of people for the aesthetic choices they make with their bodies is what seems joyless to me. As for your specimen - he's hot - the ink's a bit excessive for my taste but I wouldn't kick him out of bed for it. r69 - getting a tattoo hurts a little but it's clearly tolerable or it wouldn't be done by so many people, would it? ALl the gays with beards also have tattoos.
I know this gay guy, he's pretty sexy, but I have never met a more crowd-following gay in my life. Every MAJOR activity and life choice is in line with what the "hot gay guys" are all currently doing. He has sleeve tattoos, of course. As he hits fifty I expect NOTHING will change.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | August 2, 2019 5:05 AM |
Probably PTSD-related.
Traumas often sever the mind-body connection, resulting in a state of disembodied sensation. While this disconnect saves the person *during* the trauma, allowing him/her to be elsewhere while the horrific pain was happening, it leaves behind it trauma-caused disorders like clinical depression, anxiety, and an inability to feel one’s own body.
Victims therefore often resort to cutting, and extensive inking, in a self-medicating attempt to reconnect the mind-body link.

I read a good piece (was it in "Psychology Today"?) that argued that there are many reasons why people get tattoos: it's not all the same. Here are some of them:
1) NARCISSISM AND A NEED FOR ATTENTION. Many people want to draw attention to their bodies and regard their body as a work of art. Adding tattoos draws faster attention to their bodies and gains them quick commentary (especially if they flaunt their tattoos when they are new and fr4esh). This is why so many porn stars and go-go dancers have tattoos: for them, having a great body is not enough--they want even more attention for it 9especially since many of thejm have dysmorphiaand think theior bodies could be even better, so the tattoo is a kind of cheat).
2) TRIBALISM. For many people, tattoos are a way to indicated a deep-seated need to belong to a group and have it marked on you. This is why more than 90% of the people who belong to the US Armed Services have at least one tattoo. They often will have their place of action, or a dead buddy's name, inked onto their bodies. This is also why there was such a craze for "tribal tattoos" on the biceps of gay men in the 90s and 00s--it was literally a way of marking they felt they belonged to a tribe of other gay men. It's also why former Secretary of State George Schultz had a Princeton tiger tattooed on his ass--he wanted to signal for tthe rest of his life where he went to college.
3) RISK-TAKING. Tattoos are often popular with people who like to take risks or are impulsive, in part because that's what they signal to other people. Many people (not me) find risk-takers and impulsive people attractive, sometimes just on an unconscious level (why else are bad boys so popular to high school and early twentysomething girls?), and they want to signal that because they recognize it will make them seem more dangerous.
4) RECLAIMING THE BODY. People with extreme body issues often like tattoos as a way of reclaiming their bodies. This is why many trans people and many obese women love tattoos--they feel it's a way to reclaim a body they've always hated.
The article also argued that most people who get tattoos actually are fully aware that the tattoo will fade and look different as they age and their bodies change, but they don't care. It also said that the idea that people are literally addicted to tattooing because of some sort of endorphin or adrenaline rush is just a myth.

I remember someone telling my niece after she got her tattoo that it would look horrible in the nursing home someday and that no one would want to look at it, and she responded (correctly), "Do you think people are going to want to look at my skin anyway even without a tattoo when I'm in a nursing home?"
All the same, i do think how hilarious it's going to be in sixty years when the attendants are changing porn performer Ace Era's Depends and discover he has "Fuck Me" tattooed on his ass cheeks. Although i would expect he does not intend to live that long.

The results I was after, r78, were having designs I had chosen or had worked up marked permanently on my skin because I liked them and they meant something to me. It's not complicated.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | August 9, 2019 2:23 AM |
It's your body to do as you want, R87, but how can you be sure you'll always like them or want them permanently on your skin? It's the permanence that makes the motivation hard to understand for the un-inked. What you like at 25 or even 35 isn't necessarily what you'll like at 45. Fashions change. When the reaction against tattoos comes, as it will, they'll all look dated.
Aesthetically, I'm used to them at this point. A few tattoos, especially on the arms or legs, don't bother me. A large number of tats, especially if they're random or aggressive, makes a porn performer less attractive and a person in real life seem trashy.

My only worry, though even worry is too strong a word, is that tattoos age, fade and look ugly over time. Mine are modest so they won't look much worse than they are now, but the great works of skin art will show considerable degradation over time
by Anonymous | reply 94 | August 10, 2019 3:43 PM |
For some it is a fetish. I saw this documentary on tattoos and there was this guy in his twenties, down and out and living with his mother, she had told him if he gets another tattoo he is out on his own. He was talking like he didn't want to get another but before you knew it he was in a tattoo parlor getting yet another tattoo on his mostly tattoo covered body. He went on and on about how he loved the pain of the tattoo needle on his body, he looked like he might actually orgasm while getting the tattoo.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | August 10, 2019 4:28 PM |

Most people are poorly dressed; similarly, most tattoos are ugly or stupid. If they're visible, you're stuck with one (bad) look for the rest of your life.
The worst are the corny ones all the rage with fraus where I live--moms and daughters getting "family" in an ugly font running up their arms, for example. And please, don't tell me your inspiration for your banal tattoos--it's hard to keep a straight face.

by Anonymous | reply 106 | August 14, 2019 7:51 PM |

I must add, I think you can tell the intelligence level of someone based on their tattoos. People who tattoo a mishmash of random shit all over, tend to be "lacking" somewhat. (In my experience) But people who may be tatted from head to toe, but had an overall vision and plan, where there is some cohesiveness to the tats, tend to be more intelligent.... or gay. I agree with r113. No one under age 30, and possibly to age 40, gives a shit about other people's tats. I like when guys with good arms have them, it just emphasizes them even more

Someone, at R65 in this sad and pathetic thread, asks the valid question—
"I wonder if anyone with a face tattoo has ever made it to 50 years old".

A lot of guys seem to use them like how large trucks etc are used to compensate for other things.

We went to a wedding a year ago and the bride was beautiful except for quite a few tattoos on her arms and back. I really thought she would look so much better without them. I don’t want to be Judgy but I can’t help the revulsion I feel when I see tattoos!

Have them, love them (as long as they're not of something stupid like Crying Jesus.) I'm 46.

Mental illness.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | September 27, 2019 8:29 AM |
Wanted them, as far back as I can remember. Just like I knew I liked men and not women, as far back as I remember. As I’m 60 now it was hardly because they were hip, or cool or ‘trendy’.
Could be because my handsome Uncle Pat ( by marriage not blood ), who was a pitman and built like the side of a barn, had faded blue tattoos all along his arms. He had a big heart, a barrel chest ( he was in his 50s ) and most probably became the template for the kind of man I found attractive.
So...Got some great ones, got some duff ones. Obviously the first were reasonably discrete and didn’t compromise employment opportunities. Made money, retired early, was covered more extensively.
It is less so now because it has become so commercialised but there was a great scene and immense camaraderie. Also met a lot of interesting, accomplished people. Like it or not, people have been tattooed in all cultures since mankind began. It’s a folk art and there are as many reasons people get tattooed as there are people.
Sure, I was influenced by my peers when I was younger. I liked motorbikes, punk and rock ‘n’ roll, lowbrow art ... all the stuff that went on to become mainstream. Was I attracted to the fact that it wasn’t mainstream then? Of course. I liked outlaw culture. If I hadn’t been gay I’d have probably moved further into the outlaw/custom motorcycle world but, at the time, I thought it would have been hard to reconcile the two. To an extent I was both right and wrong.
Is it disappointing that so many kids who get tattoos now have no interest in the history and culture of it ?Yes. But that can be said of many other aspects of our culture as well. That’s for them to reconcile.
Now I’m getting old I listen to those whining about tattoos and just wonder if they ( or will do ) dye their hair to hide the grey, try to dress ‘younger’, contemplate or get plastic surgery, wear ‘labels’ and, certainly, say they look at least 10 years younger than their age and thank a god I don’t believe in I haven’t reached this age and still care that much about what other people think or do ( beyond idiot politicians ).
Stop getting wound up about what other people do if it doesn’t affect you. It shows in your face and expression. Really.

I have said this on another tattoo thread, but people with tattoos have a higher likelihood of committing suicide.
According to Thomas Joiner's interpersonal theory of suicide, it is actually quite hard to kill oneself. He posits that one must acquire the physical capacity to carry out the act by becoming habituated to pain in some way -- physical abuse, drug use, self-mutilation, long-term illness, combat, and, yes, tattoos.
Interesting theory.

If I see someone with multiple tattoos, I automatically think abused, molested, unbalanced with unhappy childhoods. "I'll never be truly naked again!" Another reason people shouldn't get married. Most create toxic environments and the kids end up being mental basket cases from it.

People who get them never stop and really contemplate how their bodies - and the tattoos - age. It's always rather sad to see an old, saggy body with a faded, stretched out tattoo.

It's not just a generational thing; it's a class thing. You see way fewer of them on an Ivy League campus than you do just out and about. Maybe the rich kids just have more discreet ones instead of tattoo sleeves and neck tattoos, but there's quite a difference in my college town between the college kids and the clerks at Whole Foods, e.g.

Im in the hate them camp. What happens to younger people that maybe decide to go the corporate route at some point and they climb the corp ladder and then they get invited to a conference in Bermuda and have to go swimming with all the other executives in the firm....I GUARANTEE you it wouldnt do your corporate rise to the top any good to have tattoos. I think perhaps alot of people have given up on upward mobility and just do what they want.
Also. I worked out my whole life and maintained a constant fit body weight, and after 40 avoided the sun completely and even doing all that Im getting executive saggy tits and crepe skin. Adding tattoos to that mix would be awful. Most younger people somehow think time stands still I guess.

I have one small tattoo on my forearm that I got in my early twenties, no bigger than the a quarter in circumference—it's just two letters in black ink, and is often hidden under my shirt anyway. I got it between undergrad and graduate school. I don't regret it in the slightest, but I don't plan on ever getting another tattoo. I have several friends who have a lot of them, and frankly, they don't look great—especially color tattoos. You couldn't pay me to get a color tattoo anywhere on my body. I will say that the majority of the people I know who are covered head-to-toe with tattoos have a notable immature streak.

I'm not sure why anybody cares what someone else does to their skin? Personally.. I like tattoos that look like art and not a virtual reproduction of someone's great aunt or a skull (kind of basic IMO). They can be gorgeous when done mindfully. You bitches are old as hell. Except for poster R132 who sounds remarkably cool. Tattooed and a fan of punk? Get it:). I have a yoga instructor (female, 42) who is pretty much covered with them. The worst is one of PeeWee Herman on her left shoulder blade. Nothing against Pee, but when the instructor turns around to demonstrate something, it's all I can do to not burst out laughing. This chick is constantly dicking around with different hair colors (pink and turquoise are favorites) or shaving one side of her head. It all seems like an extreme call for attention.

Not sure why, it’s nothing new, but I am a little surprised at how most people on this thread who don’t have tattoos are so opinionated about OTHER people having them. It’s one thing not to want any yourself, or to dislike the way they look on others, I guess...but to assume mental illness or criminality seems like QUITE a leap to me. I’m not sure why people are so quick to judge.
I have several, they are simple and although I am older now, I do not regret any of them. They are actually a lot of fun to get and can be quite beautiful. I am not someone who would necessarily be described as traditionally attractive (although I have an appeal to some) and my tats are sort of a way to show love and approval to myself by adorning my body.

Depends on the tattoo, location or size. Some are beautiful , interesting, or have personal significance. Some just seem pointless. Names, dates, small tattoos are appealing and tasteful and adorning. But I have two friends with dragon tattoos and unicorns and phoenix on their legs and backs. Is this so they can feel more like those creatures?
