Colorado Governor Recall Effort Follows a Larger Trend

The Democrats who control Colorado’s legislature pushed through a raft of their priorities this year, including tighter oil and gas regulations, a gun control measure and a comprehensive sex education law.

Now angry conservatives are pushing for recall elections that could yank key Democrats out of office. They’re circulating petitions against two state senators and Gov. Jared Polis. And earlier this year they tried and failed to force a recall election of two Assembly members, one of whom resigned.

“Governor Polis and the Democrat legislature are governing against the will of the people,” said Karen Kataline, a talk show host and spokeswoman for Dismiss Polis, the campaign against the Colorado governor. She said voters don’t want to wait for the 2022 gubernatorial election to challenge him.

The recalls have been brought by “grifters, extremists and sore losers looking for opportunity,” said Curtis Hubbard, spokesman for Democracy First Colorado, a political action committee created to help Democrats fight the recall campaigns. He said his group aims to convince voters that “if you disagree with someone on policy, the time to address that is the next general election.”

Recall campaigns against state lawmakers appear to be on the rise nationally. Twenty-six legislative recall elections have been held since 1994, said Joshua Spivak, a senior fellow at the Hugh L. Carey Institute for Government Reform at Wagner College in New York. That’s two-thirds of all such recalls since 1913.

Three state lawmakers beyond Colorado have been threatened with a recall this year, according to Ballotpedia, a nonprofit website that tracks elections. Two were Democratic state senators, Dawn Addiego of New Jersey and Richard Pan of California. A third was Republican state Rep. Gary Knopp of Alaska.

[quote] “Governor Polis and the Democrat legislature are governing against the will of the people,”

Really? Because 300K more people voted for Polis so maybe STFU?

Just typical Republicans trying every trick they can to gain power and use tax money to increase their private wealth

Plus, Polis is openly gay.

There are petitions being circulated in Oregon to recall Governor Brown. One of them I saw listed the reason as "Kate Brown's goal is to destroy the middle class."I often feel the country has crossed a divide we'll never go back to the other side of again.

Right now I wish there was a recall mechanism in the US constitution.

I'm sure they're backed by Big Energy money.

Plus, CO legislature voted to accept winner of the vote as president rather than electoral college winner. There is an effort to get enough states to accept majority vote winner as president in order to nullify the electoral college...it's not going to happen right now and it may never happen, but if enough states could put that into effect, the EC would be dead.

GOP will fight that to the bone.

And CO is where the Coors family and the fundy Focus on the Family have political piwer$. . They believe Colorado is theirs. The Coors are big friends of the Cheneys. You yiunsters won't know about the gay boycott of Coors beer that went in for a while because the Coors family donated to anti gay groups. Guess who the Coors family hired to be their liaison to the gay community? Mary Cheney.

r5 There would be endless elections if that were the case. And there are endless elections as it is.

This is part of a larger GOP effort to call for a constitutional convention. Do you know what that means? The constitution of the US can be rewritten, effectively overthrowing the US federal govt. They need 34 states. This isn't a conspiracy theory, it's the real thing and Trump is the perfect distraction while the GOP seeks to gain state legislatures by hook or by crook.

Russia and China are buying up real estate like crazy because it only takes $500k investment in order to get a fast track to US citizenship. Right now Russia and Chinese oligarchs are funding all kinds of divisive shit through GOP front groups. They have dual citizenship, so it's legal. Trump distracts the media with screams about illegal immigration while foreign oligarchs are handed green cards by investing only $500k in condo projects, such as Trump & Kushner projects. GOP wants power & money, not morals. They allow this. They want it. The south will rise again through China and Russia

I believe you R8. There is something treacherous going on. In all my life I have never witnessed or read about black people challenging the "blackness" to the extent that is currently in our community. I believe it to be intentional to divide us.
