Turning 50 in Six Months: Where Should We Go?

I feel like there’s pressure from my friends (and husband) to go somewhere exotic or fun to mark my mid century mark.

I’m not one to make a fuss about my bday AT ALL. But I do think it’d be fun to go to one of the places on my short list:

Thailand, Croatia, Buenos Aires

Or keep it more local near the US and just do Caribbean/Puerto Rico etc. Its in February so a tropical getaway from NYC would be a welcome change of scenery.

What say you? Have you ever taken a special trip for a monumental birthday?

Angkor Wat in Cambodia is very impressive.

It would help to know what your interests are, and the beach sounds like one of them.

Based on my limited knowledge of your goals, I'd say Thailand. Croatia will obviously be cold in February and even in the summer it is not "tropical" per se. Buenos Aires is a port city. While it will be warmer in February, it's not exactly a beach destination.

I'm not a huge fan of the Caribbean as it is for the most part homophobic. I'd consider Puerto Vallarta, which will be in high season as all the North American snowbirds are escaping winter. Very lively gay scene, however, if that is your thing.

Take a Patagonian cruise.

by Anonymousreply 3July 22, 2019 6:56 PM

Thailand is fun. Good cheap food, nice beaches.

Somewhere meaningful but far. It should be about more than sitting on the beach and drinking. And if you’re like me, the desire to do “adventurous” long trips fades quickly. At 55, I want to go back to familiar places that I like and know - ideally without a huge travel hassle.

Another vote of Angkor Watt. Visit either Thailand or Vietnam with a few days in Angkor.

Another possibility is Macchu Picchu in Peru

by Anonymousreply 8July 22, 2019 7:22 PM

Shady Pines.

by Anonymousreply 9July 22, 2019 7:23 PM

Newark.

So, your birthday is in January? Head south - New Zealand or Australia. Trips of a lifetime.

by Anonymousreply 13July 22, 2019 7:34 PM

Seriously looked into Macchu Picchu but the climbing and high altitude won’t work with some of my small group

by Anonymousreply 14July 22, 2019 7:34 PM

R14, there is very little climbing. A bus takes you up the mountain to the entrance and you just walk around up there.

The high altitude may pose a problem, particularly if you're out of shape. I used diamox pills to help, but they just made me feel so weird.

I went to Egypt for my 50th. Not sure I’d suggest that now.

by Anonymousreply 16July 22, 2019 8:34 PM

You might want to consider South Africa, Cape Town is lovely and they will be having Summer there. Go on to Johannesburg, Pretoria and a safari in Kruger National Park or a side trip to Botswana, which has smaller, better maintained parks.

A nursing home, OP.

by Anonymousreply 18July 22, 2019 8:46 PM

Palm Springs sounds good for you grand pappy.

by Anonymousreply 19July 22, 2019 8:47 PM

London and to see a couple of shows in the West End. Then head to Paris because everyone should see Paris at least once.

by Anonymousreply 20July 22, 2019 8:59 PM

Venice, Italy, one of the most unique cities in the world.

by Anonymousreply 21July 22, 2019 9:00 PM

Buenos Aires and then fly to Iguasu Falls and stay on the Brazilian side.

by Anonymousreply 22July 22, 2019 9:01 PM

Amsterdam, fascinating

by Anonymousreply 23July 22, 2019 9:02 PM

Two relaxing destinations, and you don't have to ski:

Grendelwald, Switzerland...if you'd like to be in the Alps amidst spectacular scenery.

Chamonix, France...the French Alps are magnificent.

Galaxy’s Edge will be fully open by then, and WDW is a lot safer than those other places. The World Showcase allows you to see the world without having to get a passport.

by Anonymousreply 28July 23, 2019 12:14 AM

I’d say Vietnam. It’s beautiful and the people are very friendly

by Anonymousreply 29July 23, 2019 12:17 AM

Fifty? You should go to some cemeteries to pick out a nice plot.
