As a child of the '80s, I enjoyed some of her Control and Rhythm Nation 1814 stuff, mostly because of the dance beats. But then I grew tired of the paper-thin, barely audible vocals, especially on the ballads.

But I do like the one where she samples Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi.

LONELY from RN 1814 does not get enough credit. The lush harmonies and Spanish guitar...it’s gorgeous!

“Empty” from The Velvet Rope is genius, and I’m glad that she’s opening her Vegas shows with it. Not only did it predict in a thematic level what internet hookups would one day become, but the futuristic, electronica sound and top notch production were masterful.

r22 When that song came out my brother hadn't been gone a year. I remember I was shooting hoops and I had headphones on listening to the radio and that song came on. As the lyrics sank in I had to stop playing because I started to cry. This song and Sarah McLachlan's "Arms Of The Angel" had me sobbing a lot.

Nice fucking try R31. Janet wrote Black Cat, Whoops Now, Escapade, If and That’s the Way Love Goes, to name a few. Jimmy and Terry will sometimes come in and add a lyric or two or create the melody around her lyrics, but Janet is a writer.

The video for Diamond’s was awesome. A guest appearance by actor/comedian TK Carter (who’d worked with Janet on Good Times), a fake adult “Janet” and a little girl Janet impersonator were all in the mix. SO ‘80s!

Yes, Love Will Never Do... is a great song and has an a great, iconic video to go along with it. Simple, beautiful and timeless.
