When I Think Of You

by Anonymousreply 1July 21, 2019 11:06 PM

Miss OP certainly has an intense focus in her life.

It must be.....quite fulfilling to post about the same thing in SO many threads in SO many ways on SO many days.

The one where she whispers, giggles, counts, has a thin almost non-existent voice. That one is pretty good.

Beyonce, she is not!

I'm just glad that Jabba finally admitted it posts from Libraries.

by Anonymousreply 5July 21, 2019 11:09 PM

Oh and to answer the question, Someday is Tonight is one of Janet's best songs!

by Anonymousreply 16July 21, 2019 11:55 PM

Janet, with her thin voice, has a great catalogue of songs. Don't think I could pick a favorite.

Control

Funny How Time Flies

Let's Wait A While

Love Will Never Do

That's The Way Love Goes

Together Again (came out the year after my brother committed suicide)

When I Think Of You

I mean how can you choose and there are many I didn't list.

by Anonymousreply 17July 21, 2019 11:59 PM

As a child of the '80s, I enjoyed some of her Control and Rhythm Nation 1814 stuff, mostly because of the dance beats. But then I grew tired of the paper-thin, barely audible vocals, especially on the ballads.

But I do like the one where she samples Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi.

by Anonymousreply 18July 21, 2019 11:59 PM

LONELY from RN 1814 does not get enough credit. The lush harmonies and Spanish guitar...it’s gorgeous!

by Anonymousreply 20July 22, 2019 12:05 AM

Janet doesn't have paper think vocals- she has no voice. Paula has paper thin vocals.

by Anonymousreply 21July 22, 2019 12:06 AM

“Together Again “ is a beautiful song and it always makes me cry.

by Anonymousreply 22July 22, 2019 12:07 AM

Madonna has paper thin vocals.

by Anonymousreply 23July 22, 2019 12:08 AM

“Empty” from The Velvet Rope is genius, and I’m glad that she’s opening her Vegas shows with it. Not only did it predict in a thematic level what internet hookups would one day become, but the futuristic, electronica sound and top notch production were masterful.

That song she wrote as an Anthem supporting children who were victims of sexual abuse and denouncing the predators who abused them.

by Anonymousreply 30July 22, 2019 12:13 AM

Janet writes songs? No, she adds words to JJ & TL's work. My girl Beyonce contributes more lyrically than Janet.

by Anonymousreply 31July 22, 2019 12:13 AM

R25, you’re insane and incorrect.

by Anonymousreply 32July 22, 2019 12:15 AM

r22 When that song came out my brother hadn't been gone a year. I remember I was shooting hoops and I had headphones on listening to the radio and that song came on. As the lyrics sank in I had to stop playing because I started to cry. This song and Sarah McLachlan's "Arms Of The Angel" had me sobbing a lot.

by Anonymousreply 33July 22, 2019 12:16 AM

Nice fucking try R31. Janet wrote Black Cat, Whoops Now, Escapade, If and That’s the Way Love Goes, to name a few. Jimmy and Terry will sometimes come in and add a lyric or two or create the melody around her lyrics, but Janet is a writer.

by Anonymousreply 34July 22, 2019 12:16 AM

This post made me laugh out loud.

I LOVE Together Again.

by Anonymousreply 38July 22, 2019 12:19 AM

Wrong r31 you can find interviews with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis where they talk about sitting with Janet and discussing song ideas with her. They talked about how the Control album came about and if you know anything about her life and listen to the words in that album you can't help but know that she had input into that album. Maybe less so on the ones to follow but her debut had heavy Janet participation in the writing.

by Anonymousreply 39July 22, 2019 12:19 AM

Control was not her debut. She had released two horrible albums before Control.

by Anonymousreply 40July 22, 2019 12:23 AM

In her memoir, she said Let’s Wait A While was inspired by a young guy who was still in the closet & was in a relationship with a girl. He was pushing back because he wasn’t really interested in pussy.

by Anonymousreply 41July 22, 2019 12:24 AM

Yeah, and LITTLE JAGGED PILL wasn’t Alanis’ First album either.

But CONTROL is considered Janet’s “first “ album.

by Anonymousreply 42July 22, 2019 12:26 AM

No. It's her third.

by Anonymousreply 43July 22, 2019 12:27 AM

Alanis' albums before JLP made her famous in her home country.

Janet's not so much.

by Anonymousreply 44July 22, 2019 12:30 AM

Janet's first few albums got the response her later ones should have. And which her most recent ones do.

by Anonymousreply 45July 22, 2019 12:35 AM

You’ve lost God Control, R46.

This is your wake up call!

by Anonymousreply 49July 22, 2019 12:41 AM

How about this r40.

It's her first album that mattered to anyone.

by Anonymousreply 50July 22, 2019 12:42 AM

Janet is a writer. Her lyrics are simple and something you'd find in an 8th grade girls notebook.

by Anonymousreply 51July 22, 2019 12:42 AM

The video for Diamond’s was awesome. A guest appearance by actor/comedian TK Carter (who’d worked with Janet on Good Times), a fake adult “Janet” and a little girl Janet impersonator were all in the mix. SO ‘80s!

Another excellent track from Herb Alpert’s Keep Your Eye On Me album was the legendary quiet storm cut “Making Love In The Rain”, which featured Lisa Keith in lead vocals and Janet singing the hook. ❤️❤️❤️

Janet would not have a career except for her last name. We all know it. Her career would have died out before the more talented Paula's.

by Anonymousreply 55July 22, 2019 12:46 AM

Janet is the queen of steamy quiet storm/baby making songs. You could make a couple of discs off of her slow jams alone.

by Anonymousreply 56July 22, 2019 12:46 AM

R54 I didn't know she was on that track.. unfortunately, had to turn the volume way up and still can barely hear her.

^Paula's spreading her legs for the Jackson Brothers gave Paula Abdul a pop career!

by Anonymousreply 60July 22, 2019 12:49 AM

r59 Paula was more talented. Janet was lucky her last name is Jackson or she would have been laughed out of any producer's office.

by Anonymousreply 61July 22, 2019 12:50 AM

Janet’s career gave Jody Watley a solo career in the USA.

by Anonymousreply 63July 22, 2019 12:57 AM

"Love Would Never Do" is a GREAT song on every level, and still holds up fantastically thirty years later.

Some great production on that song.

by Anonymousreply 69July 22, 2019 1:28 AM

Madonna is a MILLION times better than Janet. I'm sorry but numbers don't lie.

by Anonymousreply 70July 22, 2019 5:50 AM

^What are you, twelve? Numbers and someone being better are two totally different things. Janet is infinitely more talented than Madonna. A better singer, dancer and actress. AND she has an Oscar nom, something Madonna will never have.

by Anonymousreply 71July 22, 2019 10:16 AM

Did "Medellín" finally surpass Janet's 2018 "Made For Now" hits-wise?

Eventually, Madonna and Maluma topped the Dance chart, which "Made For Now" did quickly, correct?

I like both songs.

by Anonymousreply 72July 22, 2019 12:37 PM

I like let’s wait awhile and that’s the way love goes. Btw what’s her biggest hit? In fairness to her, her last album bettered Madonna , chartwise .

by Anonymousreply 73July 22, 2019 12:50 PM

Janet’s biggest worldwide hit is Together Again (it’s one of the best selling singles of all time). Her longest running Hot 100 #1 is That’s The Way Love Goes (it spent 8 weeks at #1 - longer than any other Jackson family act’s #1).

by Anonymousreply 74July 22, 2019 5:45 PM

R72, Made For Now topped the Dance chart and the Mexican chart before Medellin, and it has more YouTube views.

by Anonymousreply 75July 22, 2019 5:46 PM

^Correction: it took MFN less time to top those charts than Medellin.

by Anonymousreply 76July 22, 2019 5:47 PM

Which is the one that she coos seductively?

by Anonymousreply 77July 22, 2019 5:48 PM

I agree with R66. Love her or loathe her, that song's the jam. The video is hypnotic, makes you feel happy and she looks stunning in it.

by Anonymousreply 78July 22, 2019 5:55 PM
