mother! was a crazy art movie and it would have been a halfway decent career move had Weinstein not happened. Good actresses are pretty much expected to do something off-beat and odd with Aronofsky, Lynch, Almodovar, Dolan, Assayas, etc. and this was Lawrence's foray into a high-budget art film. A calculated move, and she doesn't have the acting chops of Dern or Stewart or even Patricia Arquette, but the critics would have loved it because they (somewhat inexplicably) really loved her.
