Wolf Blitzer will be introducing and recapping each draw. Anderson Cooper will lead the conversation with political experts analyzing specific matchups and the strategies the candidates are likely to use. The national anthem will be sung. This is our life now.

I disagree. He's the only moderate in a debate full of left-wingers. The contrast should work for him.
I also think that if Harris and Booker team-up on him, it will make older white voters angry.
I think the debate draw is perfection, in that we get Sanders vs. Warren, and Biden vs. The Left Wing of the Party. Plus the intoxicating vocal stylings of Miss Marianne Williamson.
Both debates will be must-watch TV.

The draw was very similar to a Tennis grand slam draw. There were four seeds (Bernie, Harris, Biden, and Warren).
Then, once each side was drawn, the top four pollers [in each group] were given the 4 middle spots in their respective group. Andre Yang is one of the top 4 pollers in his group so that's why he is in the middle on night 2.
CNN pretty much said on air that the middle gets more questions.

r143 Update on where all those 4 stand currently
1. Yang has met donor threshold. And has one qualifying poll. He needs 3 more polls. If he screws up second debate, extremely tough for him to qualify. He is quite uncharismatic
2. Castro also met donor threshold. He has two qualifying polls. He is also dependent on his debate performance. And he doesn't have Beto with him to attack
3. Klobuchar needs one poll and 30 thousand donors. I think it's doable for her.
4. Booker is almost there. He already has 4 qualifying polls. He just needs 15k donors and he has plenty of time and plenty of people to attack in the debate.

Eric Bradner is just hyping a match that is not likely to take place. Pete is not looking below to garner points. He is sitting in 5th place while the top 4 have distanced themselves from the rest. In Bernie he has a vulnerable tier 1 contender that he can take down and get some needed buzz. Beto is there for the ride and to get a few soundbites. None of the top three in that debate will see Beto as a rival. The bloodbath will be between Pete vs. Bernie and Bernie vs. Warren.

R159, the advantage the Democrats still have in Colorado is that even if Hickenlooper doesn't run for Senate, they still have a good chance of winning the Colorado Senate seat:
1) There are several other Democrats planning to run for the Colorado Senate nomination if Hickenlooper doesn't
2) The state has been trending Democratic over the past decade (eg. Democratic Governor, Democratic Senator, won by Obama twice, and won by Hillary.)
3) Republican Senator Cory Gardner has low approval ratings (eg. this week's Morning Consult rankings)

Any presidential history buffs on here? I was wondering if there were calls for the Democrats to safely go with some moderate when FDR was running and calling for all his radical policies? I'm getting so sick of the Repugs going so far right that they are now basically fascists but the Democrats having to always moderate themselves. Our liberal policies are what the country wants when you ask them about the issues. We are a center left country with liberal tendencies. The lies otherwise are bullshit and I'm sick of Democrats going along with letting the Repugs define us. We need a new FDR right now and if we fight for it instead of playing the pundit moderation game, we can get it.

R187, one of the reasons Franklin Roosevelt became the most successful President in history and won a record 4 terms is because of his own personal charisma and strength of personality. Despite being a wealthy man himself, he was considered a fighter for average working people, and was called a "traitor to his class" by Wall Street.
The economic circumstances of the time (eg. the Great Depression) also worked in Roosevelt's favor. But one of the biggest differences between the 1930's & 40's and today is that the Democrats won massive majorities in the House of Representatives & the Senate. A huge win in 1932, and then increased majorities in 1934 & 1936. It was also a time when the country was less polarized and the President was able to win almost every state (eg. Roosevelt won every state but Vermont & Maine in 1936).
by Anonymous | reply 188 | July 21, 2019 6:50 AM

Can I add that another key aspect of Roosevelt's success was the exact nature of his charisma and personality.
He was an eternal optimist and in dark times people responded to that tone. He could rally and unite around a positive vision. I would argue since him the four presidents similar in tone were Kennedy, Reagan, Clinton and Obama. Three were ours.
Who in the current line up is optimistic? I'd say Biden and Buttegeig. Warren is somewhere in the middle. Harris and Bernie are just pissed off. The rest of them don't have a voice.

It was a different time. No 24 hour news, no daily polls, plus the main reason is there were Jim Crow laws in effect that kept black Americans from being any serious threat or competition to white people. So, there was no fear by white people that people of color were getting something that they weren't. Which is really what it all boils down to. Why working class whites typically vote against their own interests.

But, was the Democratic party itself trying to pull FDR back from his liberal policies like the mainstream Democratic party seems to be doing now?
The Repugs move further and further right. The Democrats move to the center. Why aren't the Dems going left instead? It's where the country is when asked about the issues. I think we just need to start embracing it and stop being embarrassed of our liberal tendencies.

r199 you are conflating charisma with inspiring. Warren is inspiring and respectable but not charismatic. Notice how she started getting traction only after she started talking about her personal life. Real charismatic persons don't have to try to appear charismatic. It should look natural. When Warren did a live chat with beer in her hand or when she discussed game of thrones, the entire nation cringed. Compare that to how effortless Pete looks whenever he talks about anything.
by Anonymous | reply 201 | July 24, 2019 5:33 AM

R201, the definition of charisma is literally "ability to inspire" and involves things like charm (which Obama has, although I'm not sure I'd call Pete charming...but, I don't like charmers, I find them fake), and character, and personality. Maybe my dislike for charm is the difference. I put a much lower value on the charm factor as it pertains to personal charisma. I put relatablity much higher on my list of what I find charismatic in people.
But, the shrill and schoolmarm crap is sexist.

[bold]How Beto O'Rourke plans to turn things around in next week's Democratic debate[/bold]
After watching tape of his panned performance in the first Democratic debate, Beto O'Rourke understood he had a problem: He needed to come across as more human and less rehearsed.
Shortly after the first debate, a senior campaign aide said, O'Rourke campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon rewatched the tape, and then told O'Rourke he needed to do so, too. O'Rourke and his wife Amy watched parts of the debate while traveling together. Then, he rewatched it again on his own.
He came to the same conclusion his campaign staff had: He'd been wooden -- too focused on what he'd begun the night hoping to accomplish -- and missed important opportunities to engage with other candidates and fight back against attacks.
So many damn rewatches, he better be pitch-perfect next week.

Pete's spokesman had something to say:
Buttigieg's national press secretary Chris Meagher responded to those comments, noting O'Rourke's failure so far to make much headway in the polls.
"Congressman O'Rourke can feel free to attack the more than 400,000 people who have invested in Pete's campaign," Meagher said. "Pete is focused on the future and tackling the changes facing our nation head on -- that's why our campaign has actually gained traction. We're looking forward to discussing this vision in the next debate."

I've been seeing all this Apollo stuff for the last few weeks and for all the turmoil going on in the 60s, it was the hope that was brought by Democrats in the face of the backwards darkness that represents everything Republican that made the difference. Kennedy, Carter, Clinton, Obama. They brought light and hope for the future.
That is not Biden. That is Warren/Buttigieg.

Just one more day, bitches. Anyone else feeling nervous for their fave? I feel like no one will come out of this debate unscathed as there are so many candidates who won't be around at the next one and so will lash out like a wounded animal.

Quinnipiac Poll from today: Biden 34 (+12), Warren 15 (+1), Harris 12 (-8), Sanders 11 (-2), Buttigieg 6 (+2)
Kamala's bump after the first debate has been nearly entirely erased. So let this be a lesson that outrageous moments during debates don't produce lasting results.

So, Beto broke out the bad Spanish in Miami. I can't wait to see what he tries to do in Detroit! I'm thinking either Jive or maybe a little street rap. You go with your bad self, Beto!

Beto (through his people) is telling anyone and everyone that he's going after Pete this time. After the 4th "anonymous" Beto source who repeated that same message to the press, Pete's spokesman smacked him down on the record.

If Beto tries to smear Pete in the debate, he will lose what's left of his popularity.
