I've opted not to share some of my more interesting stories because many on DL will screech EST. For many, if a story is outside of their own life experience, it couldn't possibly be true and *must* be an EST. That's more tiresome than actual ESTs which, if written correctly, can be fun threads.

I consider them the DL cartoon programming.

There are ESTs that suit every kind of reader, here.

DL ESTs used to be clever, fun affairs that were designed to be interactive, it was the playful back and forth that made them so great. It was like group theater. There was never any doubt that they were fake, because the sheer outrageousness was part of the attraction. Today's crop suck. The absolute worst ones are the sympathy porn posters who prey on people's better natures and then drain them like little emotional vampires. Then when their stories start to fall apart, they just double down on the obnoxiousness. That's not wit, it's psychosis.

Some alleged EST stories get called out because they are obviously fake and/or hopelessly stupid; others are called out by shut-ins who don't believe any personal story, no matter how ordinary, could possibly be true. Either way, if a thread's not of interest to you, why not just block it and move on?

So let me see if I’ve got this right. The troll writes because it wants attention. We see the troll, but we don’t engage with it in the hopes that the lack of attention will disappoint it. Finally, we hope this disappointment will actually discourage the troll from trolling again, and, as an added bonus, other potential trolls will note the fail and troll elsewhere or, even better, never be inspired to troll at all?
