"...there's not a single demographic megatrend that favors Republicans."

Up through the 1990s the GOP was competitive in California. Then Prop 186 a 1994 ballot initiative to establish a state-run citizenship screening system and prohibit illegal immigrants from using non-emergency health care, public education, and other services was put forward and Republican Governor Pete Wilson became the most prominent supporter and face of the initiative.

It passed, but was ultimately overturned by the courts.

The lasting effect however was to permanently turn a generation of voters against the GOP, which now doesn't hold a single statewide office.

Trump and the current crop of Republican's behavior threatens a similar dynamic at the national level.

"Next year, the entire under-18 population will be majority non-white, according to Brookings demographer William Frey. In less than a decade, the under-30 population will be majority non-white."

Sure. An the only way they can fight that is by voter suppression and removing people from the voter roles, and gerrymandering.

Young people are always sentimental fools but will wise up soon enough with exposure to the real world.

by Anonymousreply 2July 18, 2019 11:25 AM

Keep thinking that, OP. Hillary did; where is she now?

by Anonymousreply 3July 18, 2019 11:57 AM

R1= Rethuglicunt

by Anonymousreply 4July 18, 2019 12:12 PM

I meant R2. Oops.

by Anonymousreply 5July 18, 2019 12:13 PM

It's too bad young people of color care more about tweeting about the black little mermaid than showing up and voting.

by Anonymousreply 6July 18, 2019 12:46 PM

Who says they don't care about voting, R6?

by Anonymousreply 7July 18, 2019 12:49 PM

And yet OP the Dems find a way to lose. Brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 8July 18, 2019 12:49 PM

Young people of color still look up to Colin Kapernik even though he doesn't believe in voting. They would rather buy his shoes than vote. You can't fix stupid.

by Anonymousreply 9July 18, 2019 12:59 PM

The Dems won the House in 2018, so obviously some of them voted.

And they may do so again in 2020.

The only demographic megatrend that matters, and the only poll that's accurate is the election itself... and right now, elections for control of the White House and Senate have gone ro republicans. System fair or not, it doesn't matter. They are in power. Forget your trends and start educating voters...

by Anonymousreply 11July 18, 2019 1:09 PM

Who cares what right wing "articles for access" Axios and Mike Allen(tm) think.

by Anonymousreply 12July 18, 2019 1:15 PM

[quote]"...there's not a single demographic megatrend that favors Republicans."

What about the megatrend of more and more ignorant, stupid, and non-voting assholes?

by Anonymousreply 13July 18, 2019 1:35 PM

Send them all back!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 14July 18, 2019 1:36 PM

Right now, DT has a 47% approval rating. That's basically ALL registered Republicans. And a smattering of Independents.

That's a formidable bloc given that 99% of that 47% will show up to vote. Trump is in a very good position to sail through re-election and also get a whole bunch of these psychos elected and re-elected down ballot.

So who gives a flying fuck about megatends.

by Anonymousreply 15July 18, 2019 1:43 PM

Trump's approval rating is 42.5%:

Fact-based, data driven analysis of situations will lead to better results more often than not as compared to purely emotional or "intuitive" decisions. I am a huge proponent of using information.

However, the worst part about the shift toward a more analytic and data-driven approach to politics is that it's become the tail wagging the dog.

People are now looking to data, demographics, and trends rather than old-fashioned sound policy and campaigning to win hearts and minds. A belief has emerged that demographics and trends are fate. They are not. What people are failing to understand is that such analysis should INFORM your policy positions, campaign strategy, and messaging.

As long as people continue to believe that demographic megatrends are fate rather than actually developing clear messages with strong appeal on issues and policies that matter to people, cheeto and his merry band of self-serving idiots will continue to have support.

It is insufficient to continue to whine and moan about how terrible cheeto is. Someone else is terrible is NOT policy. You must give people an alternative, not simply repeat ad nauseum that the other guy is a douchebag.

by Anonymousreply 17July 18, 2019 1:58 PM

the megatrend favoring the rethughs is their orchestrated destruction of public education. they need more morons to win elections.

by Anonymousreply 18July 18, 2019 2:43 PM

Is good. We fix.

by Anonymousreply 19July 18, 2019 2:54 PM

I thought the divisive prop in California was 187, not 186.

by Anonymousreply 20July 18, 2019 2:55 PM

You are right R20. Typo.
