Rep Pressley: "We don’t need queers that don't want to be a queer voice."

I know what she was trying to say, but this is not good. Her full quote:

[quote] “We don’t need any more brown faces that don’t want to be a brown voice,” Pressley said. “We don’t need anymore black faces that don’t want to be a black voice. We don’t need any more Muslim faces who don’t want to be a Muslim voice. We don’t need any more queers that don’t want to be a queer voice.”

OP = Russian Russianing.

by Anonymousreply 1July 17, 2019 11:26 PM

We don’t need another bossy loudmouth angry black bitch either.

by Anonymousreply 2July 17, 2019 11:27 PM

Da, comrade

Mother Jones is hardly a Russian paper, R1.

by Anonymousreply 4July 17, 2019 11:28 PM

Bad move. One of the great observations by Judith Butler is that members of oppressed and marginalized groups are better and more reliably defined by their marginalization than any intrinsic or inherent characteristics. This sort of rhetoric invites essentialism and construction of unjust hierarchies within the marginalized groups themselves. If you want to say that some queers get used as props to undermine policies that benefit most queers then say so. Or that some blacks are the mouthpieces for policies that are bad for majorities of blacks or are bad for the most oppressed blacks then say so. But don’t talk about not needing them. And don’t imply that they are some how less queer or less black than you and are therefore less worthy of speaking.

by Anonymousreply 5July 17, 2019 11:29 PM

OP you’re just a pussy. She called it like it is. It’s people like you that are chasing demo rats away form the party. Get rid of your PC attitude you dumb fucker.

by Anonymousreply 6July 17, 2019 11:35 PM

You lost me at Judith Butler.

Listening to the whole speech makes it even clear OP is deliberately cutting out phrases to troll.

Her larger point in that response was that everyone should be speaking up, learning about politics, and getting involved in their communities. She was saying its not enough to sit there unhappy about the situation, you have to speak up and try to change it. And she thinks it's especially incumbent on the marginalized like us to do it for ourselves.

It was a wonderful message

by Anonymousreply 8July 17, 2019 11:46 PM

Of course she's referring to anyone who disagrees with her on any particular issue, regardless if it's about race or orientation.

by Anonymousreply 9July 17, 2019 11:47 PM

Get back to the impeachment, girls.

by Anonymousreply 10July 17, 2019 11:47 PM

I’m with you r8. OP is a troll.

by Anonymousreply 11July 17, 2019 11:48 PM

R9 can't think or read for itself. It can just parrot whatever Breitbart tells it to

by Anonymousreply 12July 17, 2019 11:56 PM

There’s some woman on MSNBC right now who’s angry that white people are not jumping in to the conversation about RACISM.

Why should we? So you can yell at us and tell us we’re not doing it right? I’m staying out of it.

I vote. That’s all I owe anyone.

by Anonymousreply 13July 18, 2019 12:17 AM

R13 yeah, those converations are one-way streets with treacherous corners

by Anonymousreply 14July 18, 2019 12:20 AM

That's bullshit. The oreos and bananas and straight-acting gays are citizens who deserve as much of a voice as anyone, both in the general public sphere and in their own communities.

by Anonymousreply 15July 18, 2019 12:27 AM

This woman is stoking the fires of divisive hatred. This woman is saying we must belong in our own tribe and hate the other tribes.

That attitude may be all very well for your own self-validation but we belong in one country with the one tax-system.

We need to get along.

by Anonymousreply 16July 18, 2019 12:29 AM

R13 Totally disagree. White people need to be vocal, incisive, and fearless in talking about white privilege (and so, racism). But they should be talking to white people. No white person need tell a black or brown person about racism. Similarly, Rep Pressley is misunderstood in the editing and positing of OP. However, I firmly believe people of color need to figure out responses to racism, what to do and how to do it, by themselves. I've had many Latino friends who get categorized/essentialized as "not Latino enough" etc. Nigerian immigrants and AAs have many, many similarities and face common struggles - and have real differences that must be appreciated. Similarly a third generation Cuban is very different in outlook and experience from an undocumented Oaxacan. I appreciate Rep Pressley's intent - but there is a danger is telling a black person, "you're not black enough." See the obnoxious prattle among Tavis Smiley, Cornel West and President Obama.

by Anonymousreply 17July 18, 2019 12:30 AM

The trolls are pouring in now

by Anonymousreply 18July 18, 2019 12:30 AM

Sounds like that was a not so subtle dis on Mayor Pete too. And Obama, for that matter.

by Anonymousreply 19July 18, 2019 12:32 AM

Who the fuck cares? Stop with the horseshit divisions and focus on Trump. Nobody really gives a shit what you want to be called; fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 20July 18, 2019 12:39 AM

R17 A fourth-generation Nigerian is way, way different than a first-generation Nigerian.

by Anonymousreply 21July 18, 2019 12:43 AM

R20 This is the real point, isn't it? I think the mid-term elections went well because so many folk were still do freaked out that nutso TV star was president everyone was focused on winning the House - Bernie bros, Clinton PUMAs, yellow dog dems, democratic socialists - we were all very aware of the need for unity. So far in the run up to 2020 all the factionalism and whining about purity is NOT helpful. There is a dictator who will never win the popular vote but could very easily win the Electoral College again. It's an exceptional time. We can explain why one ideology is better than another AFTER November 2020.

by Anonymousreply 22July 18, 2019 12:46 AM

Yes, you're right R22, there is no room for purity in politics.

by Anonymousreply 23July 18, 2019 12:49 AM

100% R22

Because let's be more real: the Squad are just Trump reflected through the funhouse mirror of WokeWorld where his Very Angry White Man gets warped into four Very Angry Women Of Color.

by Anonymousreply 24July 18, 2019 12:50 AM

This straight bitch needs to NOT use gay hate slurs in her 'message.'

by Anonymousreply 25July 18, 2019 12:50 AM

R17 True of all immigrant groups. R25 Queer, to Rep Pressley, isn't a hate slur, but "woke" language. There are Queer Studies departments all over academia, with straight academics involved, even leading the departments. (A curious thing - no white academic would ever lead and African American Studies program, I'd think).

by Anonymousreply 26July 18, 2019 12:54 AM

R26 '...academia and academics' live in an ivory tower.

by Anonymousreply 27July 18, 2019 1:01 AM

R27 Understood. And what happens in ivory towers gives you medicine to fight disease, produces research and data that informs public policy, even remove homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses in the DSM ('72). And, like it or not, what happens in ivory towers, influences, even sometimes determines definitions and currency of language in the Public Sphere. Just saying "queer" is not a slur, as Pressley was using it.

by Anonymousreply 28July 18, 2019 1:49 AM

I love Rep Pressley. She’s absolutely right.

by Anonymousreply 29July 18, 2019 2:00 AM

Millennials and Gen Z, who care most about these issues, absolutely knew how Pressley used it. That's how we use it.

by Anonymousreply 30July 18, 2019 2:01 AM

She's so beautiful.

And I think she will go the farthest of any Squad member. She was a Kerry Senate staffer, and I'm sure she gets what it will take to be a power player for the long haul. I expect to see her becoming close with Pelosi over time, in a way the other three likely will never want to do, for their own reasons.

Pressley, Katie Porter, and Lucy McBath give me so much hope for the future of the Democratic Party. And if Jaime Harrison can defeat Miz Lindsey in 2020, I will be over the moon.

by Anonymousreply 31July 18, 2019 2:21 AM

[QUOTE]We don’t need another bossy loudmouth angry black bitch either.

If she was white, would her race merit a mention in this ignorant comment?

by Anonymousreply 32July 18, 2019 2:24 AM

This old queer loves her message!

And fuck all of you, fuck you right in the ass, if you come here and rant and rave about the word 'queer' being a slur. That is an archaic use of the word. There is a new and modern, richer and more inclusive meaning for the word and you all know it. You may not like it, but you know that statement is true.

Have the intellectual honesty to acknowledge that truth and the decency to admit that the modern meaning of the word is the meaning that Representayive Pressley was using. Stop being a judgmental bunch of old aunties.

by Anonymousreply 33July 18, 2019 2:34 AM

She speaks the truth. Unless we are all free none of us are free.

by Anonymousreply 34July 18, 2019 2:43 AM

If I can't say the "N" word, then I don't think it's right for her to say "Queer." I don't want that bitch telling me how I should think, or vote. Go back to doing your tax-payer-funded job and STFU.

by Anonymousreply 35July 18, 2019 2:50 AM

DON'T fucking use the word 'queer." I hate it. It's a harmful, hurtful word. And no, I don't want to own it.

by Anonymousreply 36July 18, 2019 2:51 AM

R36 Most people under 30 already use it that way. You lost that battle a long time ago. That's just the truth

by Anonymousreply 37July 18, 2019 2:54 AM

[quote] We don’t need any more queers that don’t want to be a queer voice.

OK then, GOODBYE Dems.

by Anonymousreply 38July 18, 2019 2:56 AM

[quote] OP = Russian Russianing.

The Russian hoax is over, hon. Even Rachel has moved on, why haven't you?

by Anonymousreply 39July 18, 2019 2:57 AM

LOL R38 Not one person on this thread believes you're a dem and actually leaving the party for that. You trolls really don't understand how stupid you look sometimes lmao. That one was sad

by Anonymousreply 40July 18, 2019 2:58 AM

[QUOTE]If I can't say the "N" word, then I don't think it's right for her to say "Queer." I don't want that bitch telling me how I should think, or vote. Go back to doing your tax-payer-funded job and STFU.

Why does it seem like white people want to use the n-word so badly?

by Anonymousreply 41July 18, 2019 3:00 AM

Poor R36. The battle over "queer" was fought in the early 90s. You lost that fight 25 years ago, R36.

by Anonymousreply 42July 18, 2019 3:03 AM

r30, r37

As an 88 millennial, please stop pretending that "young people love the word queer and use it commonly!" because you clearly don't know what you're talking about. Outside of your "woke," myopic world, there are actual gay men and women (mostly men) STILL having that hateful slur used against them... including me. I have been bashed and called that hateful slur, I'm sure the guy who attacked me would love your new take on the word! Turns out he wasn't being offensive while he was beating my gay ass, according to you! Seriously, go fuck yourself.

by Anonymousreply 43July 18, 2019 3:29 AM

Rant all you want, R25, but the word is no longer only a slur. And there's nothing you can do about that.

by Anonymousreply 44July 18, 2019 3:32 AM

Ayanna Pressley is de boss!

She da boss of de Boss Squad.

by Anonymousreply 45July 18, 2019 3:33 AM

I want a queer with a BBV (Big Ball Voice)

by Anonymousreply 46July 18, 2019 3:34 AM

R33 Yep. As much coverage as AOC is getting, Pressley is the stronger, smarter voice. Even in their press conference yesterday, her opening and comments were the most effective.

by Anonymousreply 47July 18, 2019 3:36 AM

R47 You say Pressley is stronger and smarter than AOC.

How do rate the other Squad members?

by Anonymousreply 48July 18, 2019 3:42 AM

The Democratic Party is a fucking mess.

by Anonymousreply 49July 18, 2019 3:56 AM

R48 Let's just say I think Tlaib is #3. Pressley will be in Senate or Cabinet. I think AOC is just really young. She could well become something really big.... it's uncertain, given her mini-gaffes/wasting her political capital so far. I acknowledge that this is just amateur observation from and old leftie who can't fathom that we are where we are.

by Anonymousreply 50July 18, 2019 3:59 AM

R50 I appreciate your views.

I trust the observations of an 'old leftie' over hysterical millennials.
