Excessive Heat Watch for Metropolitan Chicago, likely to be upgraded to a Warning by tomorrow. After some possible heavy thunderstorms in the morning. the atmosphere will be capped with warm air aloft, suppressing storm and cloud development. And the head will take off. Chicago could hit 100 on Friday, getting close to a record high. And we could definitely break record high lows, for the warmest low temperature on a date. It's possible Friday night might not drop below 80 in the city of Chicago thanks to the urban heat island affect.
At 11AM CDT, in the Chicago area, skies were fair to partly sunny. It's 87 at O'Hare and Midway, only 80 at Lakefront Downtown. The Heat Index is 92 at O'Hare and the Lake Michigan Water Temperature at Ohio Street Beach is 74.
Post your weather conditions across the country as we track HEATWAVE 2019!!

After years of going to the Jersey shore, I'm fucking done. I'd prefer to sit in the comfort of my air conditioned home in a community with its own pool, rather than schlep to the Jersey Shore. The traffic going there, the tolls, the parking situation, the ridiculous beach tags, the cops on the beach, the dirty water and the high prices for anything and everything make for a miserable time.

R88: No, it's not the same every summer. Chicago didn't drop below 80 degrees for all of July 19th. That's the dangerous part, when the body can't cool off at night, those who don't have air conditioning. Conditions like that have not been seen here since 2012.

On to the midday update: Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until 7PM tonight. There is a risk of Severe Thunderstorms this afternoon and evening as the cold front FINALLY pushes into the Chicago area. There is currently a major line of storms with damaging winds in Iowan that will likely hit Northern Illinois this afternoon and evening. There are currently Tornado Warnings in Wisconsin as the cool dry air clashes with the hot humid air.
At Noon, skies are fair in Chicago. It's 88 Downtown, 90 at O'hare and 91 at Midway. The Heat Index is 108 at Midway, 103 at O'Hare and 96 at Downtown. High of 95 today with Dewpoints near 80! That is the temperature at which the air is completely saturated and Humidity is 100%. Those are levels you see in the Persian Gulf.
As an aside, you should use Dewpoint as the measure of moisture, not Relative Humidity. 63% Humidity at 93 is not the same at 53 degrees.

R128, heat in July is not unprecedented. Very few record highs were set yesterday despite the heat. It was hotter in the 1930s. The attempt to blame everything on global warming is ridiculous and undermines the credibility of the theory among the populace. Heat in July is normal and it’s been hotter before

Last night, the weatherchick on Ch. 4 said this is only NYC's 9th hottest July on record — #1 was in 1999.
I dunno. I've been here since 1999 and this feels a hell of a lot worse than most summers.
The heat index yesterday got up to 107. I don't recall a whole lot of days worse than that.

The sky is black in NY (Westchester County). Storm's a-comin' right in time for rush hour.

r133 what's unprecedented is the giant heat band that made 1/2 of the US roasting hot for several days. And the fact that it will become standard occurrence. THAT is what global warming is doing. More extreme weather events, hot and cold.

Not "Global Warming."
CLIMATE CHANGE.
Please use the correct term.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | July 22, 2019 9:39 PM |
They're describing related things, r137. And it IS global warming that is causing climate change.

That’s not unprecedented either. On this date in 1934, 33 states were over 100 degrees, and South Dakota, Missouri, Arizona, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Colorado and Ohio were over 110 degrees.

r140 the point is that these extreme events (I notice you had to go back 90 years) will be happening more and more frequently due to global warming.

I've gone through 7 caftans in the last 3 days.

You? I had on boxers this morning.
They turned into a G-string.

Paris’ all-time high temperature record may fall this week as another sweltering heat wave roasts Europe

New England has a pleasant break today. 67° f and gentle rain now. It was a really rough weekend inland.
I grew up on the shore. Not the nice shore, we had factories and nuclear reactors nearby. But we had less snow and less heat. Lots of fog, though.

r145, my coworker is vacationing on Cape Cod. She said there were tornado warnings last night, lightning strikes to multiple houses and trees and power is still out today. But at least it cooled off. That would be a miserable vacation if it was still 95 and no A/C.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | July 23, 2019 7:20 PM |
r146 presumably you like your coworker?
by Anonymous | reply 147 | July 23, 2019 7:37 PM |
r147, I do like her, but am a bit annoyed because she didn't finish her bit on a project before she left on vacation but swore she'd take her laptop and "work early before the kids get up" but now she doesn't have power and the project is going to be late. I don't understand why people insist they can get work done on vacation. Either get it done or get someone to cover it before you go, because now she is inconveniencing everyone.

R148, a power outage is pretty rare in the northeast these days. Cut her some slack.

Is New Jersey downing?

Power is out in Cape Cod? Don't all the rich people have a generator?
by Anonymous | reply 151 | July 23, 2019 8:29 PM |
What is downing, r150?

Tornado in South Yarmouth today.

My AC is on the fritz. Around noon the temperature starts climbing and ends up at around 85 degrees inside. Once the sun does down it starts to go back down. They installed a new part the other day and the ac guy came out yesterday. Apparently something in the new part is bad so they have to order the part. In the mean time the ac is constantly running trying to cool the place down.

It was like 80-something here in Norway today. I nearly melted. Way too fucking hot. It's only getting hotter towards the end of the week, with temps in the 90s range ugh.

When I mention getting an air conditioner to people in the UK or elsewhere they always say "but next week it will be rainy and foggy!"
Well, yeah, but you wouldn't have to suffer until then.

R157, I condole you.
I live in Boston and recall only one big blackout in 2003, but nothing but a couple midnight maintenance outages since then. I bet they’re afraid of riots.
