What Is The Strangest Thing That Has Ever Happen To You, Or That You've Witnessed?

I have experienced UFO activity all of my life. I have seen them alone, with friends, and family. People who have never seen them, after a few months around me will have sightings with me. Twice I saw them so close I could make out detail.

by Anonymousreply 430October 13, 2020 8:55 AM

How high were you? Jfc...

by Anonymousreply 1June 24, 2019 4:42 AM

What kind of details could you see, OP?

by Anonymousreply 2June 24, 2019 4:48 AM

Maybe you should carry your phone with you and record video as these wonders unfold before your eyes.

Would add credibility to you testimony.

One night years ago before I was a nurse , I was working as a tech in the ER. We got a call a young man was coming in via ambulance in full cardiac arrest. It was a suspected overdose. The EMT’s had already given Narcan and were performing CPR. When they brought him in he was in asystole (no heart beat). Doctor declared him DOA due to the length of time he was in asystole. We leave the body in the trauma room and bring the family in to sit with him while we wait for the funeral home to come pick the body up. The family sat with him for a good 20 minutes. All the sudden, one of his relatives comes running out shouting, “He’s alive! He just opened his eyes!” At first we just figured it was a residual nerve impulse, but sure enough, he was breathing and awake. The truly weird part was how stable he was. His vital signs were stable and he was alert and fully oriented! He went home a week or so later. He supposedly free of any impairment afterward. The man was dead for well over an hour!

I have twice seen weird little fireballs fall past my window. I live on the top floor of an apartment building. There are no other buildings nearby that are as tall my mine, but there are some big trees right next to the building. I would estimate that the fireballs came down about 15 feet from the side of the building - both in roughly the same place.

They were small, maybe 6-8" inches across, and they were dropping at normal speed, not hurtling down like a missile or meteorite - but they were definitely falling straight down, not drifting or fluttering. They weren't flaming with fire, but they were glowing and giving off sparks as they fell. In terms of color, they were blue-white. There was no sound, or at least none that I could hear, and no sound of impact. In both cases, it was nighttime. I went out onto the balcony and looked down, but I couldn't see anything on the lawn below. The two occasions were a year or so apart, the last time perhaps 3 years ago. I've never seen anything like it anywhere else.

It's very weird. Someone suggested it could be something from an airplane (I do live under a flight path to a major airport), but what could it be? Glowing, frozen airplane toilet droppings? Or is it a bit of leftover fireworks from somewhere - fireworks that I didn't see or hear? Theoretically, it could be something throwing something off the roof of the building, but what? And who? And how? The door to the roof is always locked unless maintenance is up there.

I briefly lived in a strange apartment where weird shit would happen. Just weird noises and things moving. My flatmates kept saying it was haunted but I just brushed that off as some silly drama. Then one day a flatmate brought home a potted plant, set it on the coffee table and we all went out to the movies. Came back and the plant was shredded and the bits scattered around the room like someone had ripped it apart in a fit of rage and there were dirty handprints all over the walls right up to the ceiling. There was no sign of any forced entry and we were all out at the same time. Maybe it was someone else with a key but I don't know how they got the muddy handprints right up to the ceiling without a ladder. Anyway, that was one of the strangest things I have experienced. I moved out shortly afterwards to live with my current partner and haven't heard anything since about that apartment.

The most singular experience in my mind is seeing a man’s body fly past a hospital window while I was waiting to get on an elevator. He landed half on a concrete path and half in a flowerbed. I hadn’t seen anyone die before and haven’t since.

by Anonymousreply 15June 24, 2019 7:58 AM

When I was younger I saw a Verne Troyer size shadow run across my bedroom wall .

by Anonymousreply 16June 24, 2019 8:06 AM

I was sitting outside one summer day, just enjoying the nice weather, and a fly landed on my hand and I was staring at it. For a lark, I mentally told the fly to fly to my other hand and it did. I mentally told it to fly back to my other hand, to sit on my thumb and it did. I mentally told to go to my left knee and sit there and it did. Then right knee. Then right ring finger....etc. I sat for about 20-30 minutes instructing this fly to go where I wished in specific detail and it did without fail. It would sit and wait in place for my next instruction. No one was around so I couldn’t share what was happening but it was very bizarre. The only thing I could think is maybe it had to do with my meditation practice at that time. I meditated each day for an hour in the morning and another hour before bed. This experience kind of freaked me out and I haven’t tried it again since.

I would dearly love to see a UFO, and if the sighting was close enough to make out detail of the craft I could die happy.

I saw a flying saucer, an apparition, had premonitions, and saw the explosion at Waco eight months before it happened.

by Anonymousreply 23June 24, 2019 9:59 AM

I had a family friend (an elderly woman) who lived in a haunted house. I didn't believe it until after witnessing the chandelier in the house starting swinging violently without explanation-- and I don't mean slightly moving--it was as though someone had shoved it with all their might. I witnessed it before my eyes, alongside two other people in the room. We were cleaning the place out and gathering her belongings for auction after she moved into a retirement community. It was very frightening. My mother had other odd and unexplainable occurrences in that house as well. Really fucking creepy.

I had a mini psychic reading at an entertainment industry party. Not possible that she knew anything about me in advance. Immediately she said I would be moving within 2 weeks. I've rarely moved in my life so I started to argue with her. She also said I'd get a large cash infusion n the process. That made my extremely happy as I was not in a good financial position at the time.

Less than 2 weeks later I was offered an extremely generous financial settlement to move out of my apartment, as the building had been sold. The new owners wanted to tear it down for expanded commercial construction.

I signed the agreement and they provided a moving truck the very next day plus a much, much larger apt at the same exact rent in a better location a few miles away. Of course I realized with rent control it was an offer I couldn't refuse. Over the next 13+ years in all total I probably made $70 - $100,000 on the deal. Psychic was right.

I was discussing a poem with a friend in the car. Neither of us could remember a certain line. 20 mins later in a different part of town a woman walks past us reciting the poem... Including the part we couldn't remember. Freaked us both the fuck out.

I was going to different antique consignment stores one afternoon, trying to find a few pieces of my china set. I knew it would be like finding a needle in a haystack, but it was a way to spend the afternoon.

At the end of the day I ended up in a big warehouse of a consignment store. It was huge and as I started to walk around I began thinking it was time to make a trip back to New Orleans. As I walked further into the store, the thought of New Orleans got more and more intense. I went from thinking I wanted to visit to wanting to retire there to moving there immediately. It was just an overwhelming feeling.

When I'd almost gone through the entire store I actually found a few pieces of my china, some cups, saucers and a salad plate. I scooped them all up and took them to the register. The cashier was just ancient and she carefully wrapped all the pieces. She put them in a bag and instructed me to go home and carefully wash them because "They came from Katrina".

Once I left the building with my china, the idea of visiting New Orleans just disappeared.

Many years ago, I was house-sitting for my parents while they were away on a trip. Except for 2 cats, I was alone. The house is old enough; it was built in the 1970s. One day, I was cleaning the litter box in the garage. The garage has a main overhead light that turns on with the light switch on a wall, but there is also a light bulb socket high above, attached to one of the wooden beams. It has a bare bulb which you can turn on by pulling a long cord. I turned this additional light on because it illuminates the litter box area.

After I was done with the chore. I got up and tried to pull the cord to turn the light off. The cord wasn't where it was supposed to be. It was wrapped about half a dozen times around the wooden beam. The garage door wasn't open. No windows were open and there were no drafts anywhere. I hadn't heard anything and you'd think wrapping the cord would have made some kind of sound. The cats were asleep in another room. I was really puzzled, but I didn't feel any creepy vibes.

A couple of times, I could also smell the strong scent of cigarette smoke in one particular spot in the living room. I don't smoke and neither do my parents. I have relatives who do, so I'm familiar with the scent. But as I said, I was the only one there. I didn't see actual smoke. The smell wasn't coming from outside. No doors or windows were ever left open during my stay. It was early winter.

Another day, I was talking to my friend on my cell phone, which was charging during our conversation. At one point, we were talking about the supernatural. Just then, the AC adapter fell out of the wall socket. I was sitting near the socket, stationary. I wasn't animated and yanking on the electrical cord. The cord was slack. The adapter had been plugged securely and the socket wasn't loose like some old sockets can be.

After my parents returned, I moved back to my place. I told my roommate at the time about the light bulb experience. She is psychic. She has predicted specific things which have happened a short time later. She told me it was the ghost of an old man who was a previous owner of that house. She said he was a longtime smoker and that's what caused his death in his home. That really got my attention because I didn't tell her about the cigarette smell. She said he wasn't a bad person. If he was, I would've been creeped out because of his negative energy. She added that he had a sense of humor and was curious about me.

Not long after, my mother experienced strange things. She heard someone calling her name while she was in the shower. No one was calling her – no one alive, anyway. On another occasion, I was visiting and it was just the two of us in the house. I had been taking a nap. She woke me and asked if I had just walked by the kitchen. No, I told her, I was asleep. She was preparing some food and saw a shadow move quickly down an adjacent hallway. I asked her if the shadow made any sound. She said it didn't and I told her it couldn't have been me. If I was a sleepwalker (I'm not), I would have made some noise.

My former roommate's response to all this: he's not doing anything to indicate he wants you out of there. But, if you give him attention, it will encourage him and he'll continue with his antics. Just ignore the dead guy. And that's what we do. We don't acknowledge his existence. I hope he moves on. My mother hasn't mentioned anything strange since.

by Anonymousreply 30June 24, 2019 12:19 PM

A friend of a friend told me there was a ghost in the kitchen and she was mad that my mom didn't acknowledge her.

After my partner's brother Tom, died suddenly, I saw tom-cats (orange striped cats, which 9 out of ten are male) running across the house and then disappearing into the walls.

I have said things that come true all my life that people would scoff at then come back and say how did you know. I predicted Madonna would play Evita in the movie 12 years before she did. I said Catherine Zeta Jones would win the Oscar for "Chicago" the day they announced the film and before a foot of film was shot. I even predicted "Babe" the talking pig movie would be nominated for Best Picture before it was released. Yes, people laughed at that.

I have never used the "psychic" word ever but when I came out to my Mother she said yeah, and you're psychic too. You used to talk about people you would have no idea is and say things that would happen.

by Anonymousreply 37June 24, 2019 3:11 PM

R22 It was. There were four or five people also waiting for the elevator and we all saw him together. His body bounced once, horribly, when he hit the ground. His head landed in the flowerbed so I couldn’t see that damage but there were flecks of red on the concrete around him. It’s something I’ll never forget.

Told this story on here before. I had a very close friend who was diagnosed with ALS after she moved to Las Vegas. I went out and visited with her a couple months later, and found out it was progressing rapidly. My job took me to the Middle East a couple months afterward. One night out of the blue, whatever I was dreaming fell away, and the dream changed to me, her, and her daughter. We were holding her up, and she turned to me with a huge smile on her face. She said she was really going to miss me.

I was upset, and woke myself up crying. It was 2:15am. I couldn't shake the feeling, so I went for a walk (Abu Dhabi is VERY safe), then went to work early. A few hours later, I got an email from my friends daughter saying to call her when I could. I did, and was told that she was with her family, asked for a sweater of mine I didn't know she had, and said she needed to go lay down. She died soon after laying down.

I told her daughter about my dream, and said if felt like she came to say goodbye to me, which gave me comfort. When I asked what time she died, they told me it was 2:30pm. Abu Dhabi is 12 hours ahead of Las Vegas. So she had died 15 minutes after she came to me in that dream.

Profound R41.

The day my disabled sister passed on there was a violent black thunderous rainstorm (it was around noon) uncharacteristic for the time of year (September), and as I went on a workbreak then still oblivious to her death I saw a dead pheasant lying in front of the store in which I work. My mother came and broke the news to me a few hours later.

by Anonymousreply 49June 24, 2019 10:36 PM

I've told this story in another unexplained DL post, but I'll tell it agai. One night I had just gotten into bed and was laying there trying to fall asleep and I heard rustling of all the crap I had laying all over the floor (messy kid). It distinctively sounded like someone was walking around my room. I immediately felt really scared, turned the light on and didn't see anything. I then noticed on the wall above my beds headboard, three fresh drops of blood in a perfect row. I know it was blood because I picked up one of the drops on my finger and tasted it. I screamed for my parents, they saw it and just said go back to bed. It's been almost 25 years since this happened and I still remember it clear as day.

I bought the apartment next door to mine after the old lady who lived there passed away. She had lived there for over 50 years. After the renovations combining the units were done, there were a series of odd events. A brand new gas pipe sprung a leak, a light bulb exploded and a water pipe burst. I wrote a note addressed to the old lady saying as far as I was concerned, the space was always hers, and apologizing for disturbing her. I left it on the kitchen counter. The incidents stopped.

by Anonymousreply 51June 24, 2019 10:59 PM

Years ago I rented a house with a friend and many strange things happened. Light bulbs would suddenly get super bright and occasionally explode. We never had a bulb that lasted more than a few weeks. (Ok, probably just faulty wiring) Our dog and 2 cats would stop in mid stride and all stare up at the ceiling at the same spot for several minutes. (Ok, they probably just heard an animal on the roof but we never heard anything)

One morning I was having my coffee and my roommate burst out of the bathroom and said, "Why the fuck are you banging on the door?" I assured him I hadn't but he didn't believe me. When I went to take my shower I heard very LOUD banging on the door, like someone was trying to break it down. Naturally I assumed it was just my friend having some fun with me but he denied it. This happened several more times with the banging get louder each time. After we both experienced the phenomenon when we were the only ones home, we decided to leave.

by Anonymousreply 52June 24, 2019 11:16 PM

R40 I had a very similar experience with an old love over almost a year during his illness. I awoke in tears two very specific times in the middle of the night feeling dread. The first time was when he was in the hospital and speaking with his mom about me. We had broken up with no anomosity, were no longer in contact and I lived and worked on the opposite side of the country. They were discussing that someone needed to tell me about the situation. I had no clue he was sick. The second time was several months later when he checked himself in to the hospital due to extreme pain. Both times I was in different time zones but validated with others the times match, even given the time difference.

In between those very specific instances, I had dreams that I know were consistent with what was going onmwith him. The last one was very sweet . . . no words, just a very strong sense of love aned peace. I got the call the next morning he had passes away.

Was walking my dog in a deserted area of the local woods and came across a man holding a dog leash wandering around. We made eye contact and I felt an immediate, chilling sense of fear and panic. His eyes were like the devil’s. I turned and ran. I swear he was some kind of serial killer.

When I was in high school my friends and I used to go to a gay bar to hang out and get cheap drinks. This was in the early 80's and they never carded anyone. One night my friend says, "There is a guy starting at you and he's evil, his eyes are red. Don't look." Of course I turned to look and saw a beautiful blonde boy staring at me and his eyes were glowing red. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up and we left soon after. We went back a few more times but I was always terrified that I'd see him again. I think he wanted to kill me.

My little niece called out the name of her long dead great grandfather while visiting her grandfather. Keep in mind he had a old timey name that you rarely hear anymore. The family did not speak about him because he was a cruel and abusive man. My sister did not even know what his name was. That is the only time my niece ever said it. I still do not know the explanation.

R53 My connection with my husband is pretty tight. I was one another business trip in another state and woke up out of a dead sleep at 4:43am. I was disoriented and felt like something was wrong. After a couple of minutes, I caught my breath and decided to go back to sleep, but the phone rang. It was my husband. My beloved old dog had to be put to sleep on 15th of February 2019. He was my best friend. I've posted about him on DL before. He dislocated his hip and was in a lot of pain, and this was the kindest way to let go. I'm still mourning but I had a lot of trouble letting go initially. I would sit by his grave at all hours of the day and night (buried him on my property). I would look up and 'see' him, and as stupid as it sounds, I could still feel his spirit around. Anyway, I woke up on 2nd of March smiling, because he had come to me in a dream. I know how fucking ridiculous it sounds, and I didn't believe in shit like this before. In the dream, he was laying in his favourite stretched out position on my loungeroom floor. I sat with him and patted him for hours in the dream and then he looked at me with his big, chocolatey eyes and in my head he was telling me that he was happy and whole again, and it was time for him to go. His body started to rise and disintegrate into nothing. Since that dream, I haven't felt his spirit anymore. I still sit by his grave but the energy that was there prior to the dream is gone. I'm so grateful that he came to me one last time to tell me he was ok.

That might be explained by a pipe coming lose from the stud in the wall and vibrating or banging as the water got hotter. It's common.

I had a great cat for eighteen years and she developed cancer. I was a movie theatre manager, so movies were a big part of my life. A week after she died I was driving past the vet with Marc Cohen's "Walking In Memphis" on the radio. As I was passing the song went "Now Muriel plays piano Every Friday at the Hollywood". My cats name was Muriel, after "Muriel's Wedding".

by Anonymousreply 62June 25, 2019 12:39 AM

R59: I understand that it can be unsettling, but we have more to fear from the living than the dead. Ghosts can mess with you and disrupt your life. I’ve heard of people getting a scratch or a bruise. They cannot kill you. If they could, then the ghosts of all those murder victims would have killed their murderers. I know 2 psychics who said something similar. The killer ghosts in Hollywood movies are sensationalized fiction.

Someone asked up thread about what the two UFOs looked like I saw close up. I attached a drawing because its easier than describing it. To those asking why I have no pictures. Well I do. The trouble is when you are using a cell phone camera for an object that high, its very hard to detail. Also, when its basically right above you, the only thing that goes through your mind is "oh shit!"

It was a beautiful night out and I was walking around with a friend just outside campus in an adjacent neighborhood. We noticed one of the streetlamps behind us go out, turned and saw a guy walking down the street toward us. We kept going down the road and another streetlight blinked out. And another. Then another plunging the entire street behind us into darkness and the guy still walking in our direction. This creeping malevolence washed over us so we veered toward the main road to head back to campus. Once we were literally back on the town's main street the dread lifted and we didn't see the guy who had been behind us.

I’ve posted this (rather long) story before - on a Death Visitation thread. I’m actually skeptical about life after death; I was raised Catholic, and as a kid / young adult had a huge interest in the supernatural, ghosts, the occult - but in middle age, while I can see the comfort in believing in a soul, life after death, and heaven, it just seems so unlikely to me now. Although I admit that I know I don't know for sure. But the following did happen to me, and it was at the very least some kind of telepathic incident. This happened 33 years ago, so pre internet, cell phone and personal computer, but I remember everything clearly because I talked about it with a friend as it was happening, and later with my family at my grandfather's wake. I was my paternal grandfather's first grandchild, and a boy, so to an old Italian guy I was automatically the favorite. He was a kind, generous man and good to all his grandchildren, but as the family expression went, for him the sun rose and set on me. He was very proud that I got into the university I did, and as soon as I was accepted started talking about how he wanted to come out for my graduation - school was 1,000 miles away from home. He literally mentioned my graduation every time he saw me during my four years of college. Spring quarter of senior year, about 10 weeks before graduation, there had been a dorm party on Friday night and I woke up with a start early Saturday morning from a disturbing dream. My immediate thought was "I need to call home," but then remembered tomorrow would be Easter and I'd call home then. I rolled over and fell back asleep. The other reason I didn't call home immediately was there was no phone in my single dorm room. I had been on an off campus internship the quarter before, and saw no reason to pay the Bell Co. 80 bucks to hook up a phone for 3 months. I also was a work study assistant to a professor, and she let me call home long distance on her office phone - and back then that was a big deal, long distance was expensive. A few hours later I was down in the cafeteria eating with my friend Don who lived down the hall. He asked how I was, and I said I had just had a weird dream, that was kind of morbid and it was still on my mind. Then I told him the dream: I was in a theater watching an elaborate play - the setting looked like an engraving of Louis XIV's Grand Lever - a bunch of people standing around a fancy bed - the guy in the bed slumped over and they loudly announce "The King is dead." Then I'm having a back and forth discussion with my Father - there is some kind of animal or horse I want to keep but he says "there's no place to put it." Next I'm in my best friends kitchen taking to him - we are both young adults, but Joe's kitchen looked like it did when we were kids, with turquoise walls and 60's appliances. Suddenly his older cousin Greg walks into the kitchen and we both fall silent and stare at him. (In the dream, as in real life, I didn't like Greg - he was a few years older and kind of a bully, so whenever he visited I didn't enjoy playing with him.). (Continued)

by Anonymousreply 72June 25, 2019 4:18 AM

Part 2. That was the gist of it, and Don agreed that is seemed weirdly morbid as we went back up to our rooms. When we got to my door there was a note taped to it - "Call home IMMEDIATELY," signed by the name of one of the guys currently living in my last year's dorm room - a phone number my mom would still have had. I turned to Don and said "I need to use your phone, somebody in my family is dead." As we walked to his room I was afraid it was my dad because of the "King" in the dream. I got my mom on the phone and she told me grandpa had died earlier that morning in a car accident. My immediate reaction was actually anger - I had told my dad over a year before that he needed to take grandpa's car away from him - he was 80 and his driving frankly sucked - by my dad couldn't bring himself to do it. (continued below)The next hour was a blur - called my prof, she helped me book a ticket and picked me up on campus and drove me to the airport. As I waited for the plane, I tried to make sense of the dream. The "King" part was obvious, and the "no place to keep it" was too. In '74 my grandfather finally got rid of his '56 DeSoto, and I really wanted the car. He would have given it to me, but it would be 6 more years before I could drive, and my dad said "I'm sorry but there's no place to keep the car for that long." So Grandpa and dead - but I couldn't figure out why cousin Greg part was in there - it didn't make any sense. About an hour later looking out at the clouds it hit me. I remembered one morning walking to HS with Joe our senior year when he randomly asked me, "Do you remember my cousin Greg?" "Yeah, I do, he was always an asshole." Joe paused a beat and then said, "Well he died the other day in a car accident." Being a 17 year old punk I replied "Well I'm sorry, but he was still an asshole." I realized that up until my grandfather, Greg was the only person I had known who died in a car wreck - so in a rebus puzzle kind of way the dream told me exactly what had just happened. As best as I can determine I had the dream just as or right after the accident occurred. And if I had actually called home right when I woke up, they probably wouldn't have known anything yet - my grandfather was out alone very early that morning when he got into the wreck - it took a bit for the hospital to track down an notify the family. So did my grandfather's sprit come to say goodbye to me right after he died, or did he think so strongly of me and my graduation as he was dying that there was some kind of psychic, telepathic connection between us right before he passed away? I honestly don't know. I do know it happened, and nothing remotely similar had ever happened to me since.

Many odd things have happened to family members, but all to my mother's relatives.

When he was younger, my grandfather lived on a farm in New Jersey and one night when he and his brother were driving home late, they saw something running through the fields along the road, running almost parallel to their car. (Keep in mind this was around the 1930s, dark deserted roads lit only by moonlight and the car headlights.) The slowed the car down and the figure ducked below the crops. They were just ready to accelerate and drive home when something came charging out of the fields, jumped on the hood car so hard that the front lowered and then hopped off. It turned as it fled toward the fields on the other side of the road, looking back with red eyes and then ran into the fields on the other side of the road. My grandfather and his brother sped away, ran into their own as soon as they arrive and locked the doors. The next morning, they found a dent and scratches on the hood of their car. My grandfather's cousin confirmed having been told the story adding that neight my grandfather nor his brother were the type to "tell tales".

Years later, my grandfather woke in the middle of the night. Looking out his bedroom window, he saw a strange figure walk across the area between the house and garage and then walk through the garage wall. The next day, he was driving his car when he was broadsided by a truck which had failed to stop at a side road. Grandfather went through the windshield and was thrown a few feet, surviving with only a few cuts and scratches from the broken glass. Police officer who showed up later said he was damn lucky, adding that most people wouldn't have survived a crash like it.

Grandmother had imaginary friends when she was young who would tell her things about other people, information my grandmother couldn't possibly have known. When older, she often had friends and family visit her in dreams or visions before learning of their deaths. When she died, several family members had dreams of my grandmother visiting them, all of the dreams being very similar.

My sister and I both used to see and hear people in our house when we were young. Sister seemed to grow out of it, but to this day, I can still go into certain places and "know" about the location and who has lived there, sometimes feeling or hearing/seeing them/

I was in a car accident when I was younger, and I wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. I went right into a telephone pole. I should’ve gone through the window, but I felt something holding me back keeping me safe. It was very peculiar.

Someone up thread about Verne Troyer reminded me when I was probably in 1st - 4th grade and my bedroom was in the "attic." It may have been a dream, but it was extremely vivid that I still remember it. There were about 10 stairs to get up to the room and there was creatures/ghosts that were about 3 feet tall and white and they were racing each other to see who could get up the stairs the fastest. I think I got out of bed and hid behind it watching them. That was it. But, my memory is exactly how the room was set up. Usually in dreams, things aren't as they really are.

The 2nd thing...I'm not making this up, it's so random...I have an active imagination and imagine situations/conversations and was thinking about talking with my high school classmates in the cafeteria about shits that are green...while I was on the toilet at home...I wiped my hole and looked in the toilet and it was the 2nd time in my life that my shit was green. It was such a crazy coincidence.

I've had a few experiences that fall under the category of hauntings, which really need a very very contorted explanation to pass them off otherwise. To make a long story short for just one, the power to my apartment and mine alone went out one night. The super eventually found the master switch in the basement had been switched off. He was pretty freaked out himself because it was in a padlocked area which was Secure with absolutely no sign of tampering. Also, he assured me that it wasn't any kind of electric usage as the circuit breaker would trip first. Someone or something moved that switch specifically.

by Anonymousreply 83June 25, 2019 6:37 PM

I'm not sure this is really all that strange but I'll post it anyway.

I was riding the subway on a March morning and, as always, looking intently at my fellow passengers. I never check my phone, listen to music, read. or do anything but look at my fellow riders when I'm on a train because I find it interesting. A guy across from me was reading the inside left page of the NYT and he read it the whole trip (approx. 36 blocks), never once looking up. I figured he'd fallen asleep with an ability to keep the paper upright.

Cut to that evening when I took a totally different train downtown. Had to stand for some of the trip but finally snagged a seat and looked across the aisle at the exact same guy (Mets baseball cap, blonde, forest green pants) and he was in the exact same position reading the NYT. I looked closely at the paper and he was reading the inside left page. I stared at him trying to make eye contact but he never looked up. He could still be riding the subway to this day for all I know. Maybe this isn't peculiar but it had a very strange feeling to it.

Granny had a little room with a cot or twin bed in it. Naps after lunch which I understand now being an eldergay.

Anyway, on the like tongue and groove ceiling there was what looked like a dog print! So, they painted it before installing or a dog walked on the ceiling. It was fascinating. I would also count the paneling boards or the cuckoo clock tick tocs. Anything but take a nap.

R77 telephone accident story Do you have any deceased relatives that loved you? I say this because my niece had the exact accident and she felt herself being held so tightly to the car seat but with no seat belt. She even had bruises on her ribs but did not hit steering wheel or anything?? My sister then is talking to a medium and our deceased mother comes through to say she held on to her granddaughter..(my niece)

Woke up early and went to my parent's room to lie on the floor beside their bed. Dad must have gotten up already as a lamp in the corner cast a circle of light on the ceiling. Suddenly, the shadow of a man in a straw hat with a cane, like Dick Van Dyke or something, did a dance number in the "spotlight."

Not to me, but my father’s side of the family. My grandmother had psychic ability and told me amazing stories in the plainest way. The thing is, my dad, who is a very literal, conservative engineer, witnessed some of these.

My father recalls a morning when my grandmother heard a dog howling and said, “that dog’s owner just died,” which he had. Other stories were about omens and premonitions. Once, my father got up and found a crystal fruit bowl on the kitchen table split in half. That was followed soon by news of a death. Birds flying into windows was very bad, to a point where my mom, who is not normally superstitious gets a little panicky when it happens.

My grandmother talked about waking up to see the ghost of her mother-in-law standing at the foot of the bed. It vanished when the phone rang with a report of the woman’s death. One of the stranger stories confirmed by my father: the family was sitting in the living room watching TV. There was a knock at the door, so he got up to answer it, but there was no one there. He sat back down, and there was another knock. Then knocking started from inside one of the walls, then another, then another. My father said his hair was standing on end. Then the knocking stopped abruptly.

One of the more poetic stories was about my great grandmother. She was napping in the middle of the day when something stirred her out of sleep. She opened her eyes and saw a lamb standing beside the bed. She reached out and touched its wool, then fell back asleep. A little later, the sound of my great grandfather coming into the bedroom roused her again. He told her that he was going to walk to the bank. When she opened her eyes to look at him, his face was blank, featureless and smooth. She thought she was dreaming and fell back asleep. He died of a heart attack on his way to the bank.

Up until the age of six or so I was a "calendar savant," which I learned in adulthood is most often correlated with autism (and I'm not autistic).

It became a party trick for family and my parents' friends: "Mr. Hayes was born on July 27, 1947. Can you tell us what day that was?"

"Sunday."

I was never wrong. But I could only do it back in time — and not before 1900 or so.

The ability faded around the time I started kindergarten and was completely gone shortly after. And I'm still only average in math.

The night my grandmother passed away, she told my mother that my grandfather was asking for her to go on a picnic (one of her favorite things to do with him when they were first married). My mother told her to go ahead and go on the picnic. My mother stated that when she went to sleep that night she knew my grandmother was going to die that night and was okay with it.

When my grandfather passed away, the kids were left at the house while the adults went to one of the wakes (we went to the earlier one). My cousin (who was 17) was babysitting us. I was the youngest at 5. When my grandfather was alive, he had a thing that all the doors to the bedrooms HAD to be closed at all times. We were playing upstairs and then went downstairs for dinner. I was the last one down and left the doors open. We went back up later and all the doors were closed. We played more...left the doors open again and went back downstairs. Later, we went up to find them closed.

When I was in high school, I was at a summer camp at a university in my state. I was walking to lunch when a bunch of dogs came out of nowhere and wanted me to pet them, which I did. When I got done with lunch, one of the camp advisors stated that my sister called looking for me so I called her only to find out that my dog had died around the time the random dogs started to jump around me. Never saw the dogs again.

I've had multiple supernatural experiences occur in my life since I was a child. They stopped once I was around 20 or so, but I've had weird coincidences and other incidences of kismet in my adult years. One that was personal was me waking up in the room my grandmother died in to the feeling of someone touching my forehead. It didn't frighten me, and I just went back to sleep. The next morning, my pillow was lying cross the room in front of the door. I wasn't aware she died in that specific room in the house at the time either; I found out years later.

I knew a railroad engineer who told about driving. his train out in Wyoming or somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and one night they went past a horrible airplane crash. It was a big plane with wreckage scattered all over, there were fires burning and emergency vehicles everywhere. You could see the smoke for miles.

About 24 hours later he was doing his return trip, and the field was freshly plowed and there wasn't a sign that anything had happened. Nothing ever showed up on the news.

This is actually the weirdest thing, and call me crazy if you’d like. I went to a fair one time, for some reason my friends weren’t with me can’t recall why. I noticed there were surprisingly few people there, and an abnormal amount of clowns, didn’t think anything of it. Got on some ride, got one of those spiral cut potatoes. Took off after, went home went to sleep. Next morning my friend calls me and says where I was last night because my group of friends had a hang out and no one could get a hold of me nor did I reply. Told them I went to the fair, he asked what fair, then I couldn’t remember where it was. I just said the fair in town, he just laughed and said something to the extent of yeah whatever. Still have no idea where the fuck I went that night.

I had a friend who went to England for the summer years ago. When he got home he told he was at club and he was walking down a hallway and I was standing at the end and I said to him "Turn around, there is someone in the other room you should meet". He said he did and met someone there that he ended up having a summer fling with. I thought he was kidding but he was dead serious. I said "Didn't you think it was strange I'd just show up in another country", he said he knew it wasn't really me, but I had come there to just give him the message.

I had a dream about a girl I went to high school with (I didn’t know her very well) This was years after high school and I didn’t think about her much.

Anyway, in the dream she was getting married at a church in our hometown. Her mother showed up to the wedding drunk and the bride was upset and told her mother to leave.

Out of curiosity, I looked her up on Facebook and she did in fact get married at that exact church the day after I had my dream.

Her mother was in none of the wedding photos.

When I was 16, a great uncle passed away. He was close to my dad and he would come over a couple of times a month to visit us. He and my dad played backgammon almost every visit. A few months after his death, I was home alone one day and I saw what looked like a shadow of a person walking in the hallway that lead to our dining room. I then heard something fall and I went into the dining room and found our small backgammon set on the floor. We had a small bookcase where he had some board games stored and the backgammon set was only thing on the floor from the bookcase. Seeing the backgammon set, I thought of my great uncle and how he liked playing backgammon with my dad. I knew it was his spirit in the house. I didn't tell my parents about that incident until about ten years later when my dad said that he would have dreams about my great uncle's visits and the backgammon games.

I wish all these things would happen to me. I've had dreams and people can say other signs but something in me just won't let me believe 100%, I keep asking for more and more. Ideally I'd love to see like a full body vision of my mum in daylight so I have no excuse to say it wasnt real. I'm even tempted to do dangerous/suicidal things hoping my mum will come back to stop me, like the person who felt someone was holding them back in a accident. I know it's best not to challenge or provoke my mum but I just want her back.

I never ever tell this story because people will think I'm nuts and it creeps me out but here goes.... Hope not TL;DR

Late afternoon on New Years Eve in 1983, my 17 year old self went over to my friend's house to drink a couple of beers and smoke some weed before going out for the night. His parents were out of town so we had the house to ourselves. He threw a log in the fireplace, put some party music on and we downed a few Buds and smoked a joint.

Evening rolls around and we realize we should start getting ready to go out. It was getting late and we'd lost track of time. He jumps in the shower while I get my clothes unpacked and ironed. He comes out of the bathroom with his hair dryer, products, brushes and combs. (It was the 80s so blow dried and gel were required.) He tells me I can jump in the shower and he'll finish getting ready. I do just that.

15 minutes later I'm showered and almost dressed when I hear a blood curdling scream coming from my friend. "NO, NO, NO, NO" he's screaming. My heart starts racing like when you know something bad has happened. I go running out of the bathroom and he's charging down the hallway towards his bedroom. He runs in, slams the door behind him, and keeps yelling, "NO! NO! This isn't happening!"

So now I'm yelling through the door asking what's happening. He's mumbling in a muffled voice through what I assume is a pillow. Then he stops and screams for me to leave him alone and give him a minute. I was like what the fuck but okay. I'll go away. Now I'm thinking maybe he's just fighting on the phone with his girlfriend or his parents or something. I mean who screams bloody murder like that over nothing?

Finally he comes out into the kitchen looking horribly shaken and pale. Of course, the first thing I ask is what the fuck was he screaming about. He tells me he must've had too much weed or something and is feeling freaked out. "Over what?", I asked. He started to stammerand explanation but then said he would just show me. He grabbed my arm and led me down the hall to the living room. At this point I'm amused thinking bro can't handle a little weed.

The living room was pitch black except for the fire that was burning in the fireplace. He explained that earlier he had wandered by the living room and just started daydreaming while gazing at the flickering flames. He directed me to do it. "Just do it - keep staring", he said. I did as he instructed unsure of what this was all about. He went quiet and I just kept watching the fire dance upon the logs. Kind of relaxing actually.

Finally after a few minutes, he said "Now look at the mirror over the fireplace and focus on your own reflection. Ok, I thought and did what he asked. It took a few seconds for my eyes to adjust to the darkness of the room after staring into flames but when my eyes finally adjusted and my own reflection came into view, my blood turned to ice and my knees buckled. "OH MY GOD", I screamed as I nearly fell to the ground.

My friend started yelling and screaming, "What did you see? What? Tell me!" I couldn't talk. I started running down the hall towards his room just as he had done earlier. He chased behind and slammed the door shut behind us. "What did you see?" He started yelling again, pleading with urgency. I looked him in the eye and still shaking I said, "The Devil." He looked at me with fear in his eyes the likes which I've never seen to this day and started crying. "Me, too", he whispered.

We're both agnostic and could never really reconcile what happened that night but I never went back to his house again.

It was cool and all, but even weirder, a couple weeks later, in almost the exact same location at approximately the same time, I saw another one at the same spot in the sky. What did the devil look like? I want to know too.

I was on a house tour in Vicksburg Mississippi the house was an old plantation the original part of the house was built in the late 1700s. We were told that the house was haunted and sometimes, the ghosts would show up on the tours. I took photos in one of the bedrooms of a ladies dressing table there was a small reflection in the mirror of the dressing table of something that I know was not in the room. It was a small figure smirking with pointy ears and features similar to Spock from Star Trek. I didn't realize this until later when I was showing the pictures to a friend and he asked me what is that?

by Anonymousreply 127July 1, 2019 11:00 AM

I bought my house from an old couple who lived here for over 50 years, I never met them, they moved to a retirement apartment. I never gave them a thought and then about 2 years later I found myself thinking about the old lady, just random things like did she plant the lilacs. I probably had those type of thoughts 5 or 6 times a day for a few days. Then I received a card addressed only to him and I knew she had died. It was so strange because before I thought about it I opened the card as if it had my name on the envelope. I know it was someone from the past who didn't have their address but it felt so strange.

by Anonymousreply 128July 1, 2019 3:41 PM

When I was a kid, I had two dreams predicting relatives' deaths. Each time I told my sister.

When I was in my 20s, and my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, my sister said, "DON'T dream how Daddy dies." But I did. And in the dream, I saw myself going down the hospital hallway to tell my sister and one of my brothers that Dad had died. When I told my sister, she said, "Well, you know that won't come true because there is no way I won't be there when he dies."

My father died while my sister and brother were out getting dinner. I left my father's room to make phone calls and met my sister and brother returning with dinner.

A few years ago I also say some type of glowflies, or orbs. It happened at night, on two separate occasions.

I had been going through a period of some type of meditation, researching near death experiences, and had been feeling an intense connection to the universe. I was waking up with an incredible feeling of beauty, purposefulness.

Then I saw those orb light things. I looked at them but I couldn't tell if they were harmless, bad, good, what they were. I kind of freaked out and just wanted to get out as soon as possible. I didn't think about pulling my phone to get a video. I was too scared. I didn't know what I was seeing. I was afraid what I was seeing wasn't real.

After reading the post about the fly control, I am a little tempted to get back into this meditation. Not to control flies, but maybe there is some type of connection that can be made to live a better life. Idk, half of me feels that way then half of me is like, well maybe it's better to shrug it off as BS and some type of hallucination. It's not a good feeling to feel alone in these things. Feeling like you're coming down with schizophrenia. No one really believes you when you tell them anyway, so.

by Anonymousreply 130July 1, 2019 5:42 PM

lol @ "coming down with schizophrenia." Just take two aspirin and call me in the morning.

by Anonymousreply 132July 2, 2019 12:06 PM

^^^ They saw their own facial image in the mirror enveloped by the flames which they stared into intently for however long they did so. It was an optical illusion. Draw three small circles the side of a bee-bee on a piece of paper. Fill them in solid black. Stare at them for a full minute, and then look at the wall. You'll see the image of the three dots on the wall.

When I was six years old I was very ill and my dad bought a kitten home to cheer me up. We were never allowed a cat but he relented this time. I adored this cat, she followed me everywhere and we did everything together. I went through a lot during childhood, adolescence and early adulthood, but this cat was the one stable influence in my life, we were inseparable. She lived till she was 20 and I, 26. In the end she had a brain tumor and was suffering terribly with seizures and advanced old age and she had to be put down. She was in my arms as the vet made the terminal injection and I felt the life go out of her and subsequently her body go limp, she was my best friend, I was beyond distraught. We buried her in her favourite blanket in a large, brightly decorated gift box in my parents backyard.

I was so upset, I didn't know where she was (spiritually) I missed her, I was lost. I asked her to let me know that she was alright. The night after she died my whole family had gone to our holiday home for the weekend as we were all feeling very depressed and home just reminded us of her, remember, she'd been in our family for 20 years.

I kept asking her to send me a sign she was alright when all of a sudden a cat appeared at the screen door meowing. None of us had seen this cat before or since. A large brown Manx with no tail. I opened the door and the cat entered the living room, weaved its way around us and the furniture, and ascended the stairs. I followed. It went from room to room meowing ,then descended the stairs, walked through the living room, out the door and off into the night never to be seen again. I took this as her sign. I still miss her.

A year after she died my parents bought another cat, one that looks identical to the one we had for 20 years with the exact same markings on her. She has the same behaviour and personality traits as the previous cat and she acted as if she knew us the minute we got her. She seemed to know my parents house and she shows us an almost obsessional love and affection. I honestly believe it is the same cat come back to us.

My friends cat was born in his apt and lived her entire life in his place. After she died he said he would swear that at night when he would get into bed he would feel her jump up on his bed and walk across the bed as she did when she was alive. This occurred for about a month.

My cat who I was very close to died about a month ago. I still feel hear presence but not as strongly as when she first passed. I heard her meow one morning. She had a very strange loud meow so I knew it was her. I also saw her a few times in spots where she liked to hang out.

Not strangest, but funny. I was hospitalized with pneumonia and I warned the staff that I have a severe startle reflex and yell in my sleep, if woken abruptly.

In the middle of the first night, the nurse came in as normal, but she woke me. I sat up and opened my eyes, though I was still sound asleep, I could see. I screamed loud and long, at the top of my lungs. This made the nurse screem. When I was done, I took a long, deep breath in. She stopped screaming. Then I let loose with another scream at the top of my lungs. Then the nurse screamed again. Then I woke up and laid back down and went back to sleep. I saw the whole thing, but was sound asleep.

I own a house in Boston built in 1920. I'm only the third owner. The first owner only lived here for a short while but the second owner owned the house for 65 years. She died a very old woman in '93 and many of my neighbors knew her well. Her name was Rose. She was widowed young with a severely autistic child and opened up her large house to boarders to pay the bills after her husband's untimely death. She used to lock her son, Roman, in the front room facing the street so he could sit at the window and watch passersby. Rumor was her boarders were also her Johns which was why the little boy was locked away during her "appointments". More disturbing rumors were that Roman was sometimes an unwilling participant. Her son predeceased her and she eventually died alone in this house.

Throughout the 25 years I've owned the house since her death, bad shit has happened here. Suicide, heart attack, opioid overdose, psychosis, miscarriage. It doesn't stop. Less tragic experiences have occurred as well. There have been dozens of times people have said they saw someone peeking out the window. Some thought it was me and waved. They said the person waved back. Impossible considering a massive wardrobe has blocked that window for over two decades.

Rose's ghost constantly messes with my life and undermines anything I do in this house. If I try to make any major changes to the property she wrecks my plans. My elderly neighbor who knew her well says the house was all she had and meant everything to her. I'd like to sell soon but hope she doesn't read this and mess with my plans. She will, though. She hates me but won't let me leave. If I ever finally escape, which is very unlikely, God help the new owners.

In January and February 2017, I had several dreams about being at a funeral. It worried me for a bit and I then stopped worrying. Then the second week of April, I started to get a bad feeling on a Friday afternoon. The bad feeling didn't go away throughout the weekend and initially I was worried because I had an aunt who was in very poor health. I thought she was going to pass away. Monday morning arrived and I woke up with that bad feeling. I work from home and that morning I had two scheduled video conference calls. Before that, I turned off my phone and left it in the kitchen. During the calls, I was feeling a bit anxious and sad.

The calls lasted two hours and after that I went into the kitchen to get something to eat and check my phone. There were several missed calls from my dad and a few family members. I called my dad right away and he told me that my cousin who was 44 at the time was found dead at his home. The autopsy determined that he suffered an aneurysm.

by Anonymousreply 145July 3, 2019 5:22 AM

We have a supposed ghost at work that knocks items off of high shelves, especially while our manager is talking. Group consensus is the ghost hates him. Things really do go flying off the top of shelving there almost daily, usually without anyone being close to it.

by Anonymousreply 150July 3, 2019 5:55 AM

R146: The suicide was my drug addicted partner's, heart attack was my 49 year old mother, overdose was a young friend in recovery, psychosis was a sick friend who stayed with me in Boston while in cancer treatment at Dana Farber and the miscarriage was my sister's which occurred at a birthday party I threw for my niece. Also, a dear friend was diagnosed with MS while living here, and another with non-Hodgkins while renting my first floor. Recently, an otherwise healthy jogger collapsed and died on the sidewalk in front of my house.

In totality, completely justifiable coincidences. No big. Shit happens. That's what I've told myself continuously for 25 years. I'm out.

by Anonymousreply 151July 3, 2019 7:16 AM

R142 Not a psychic, more of an empath, but I can at least corroborate the story a bit. We had two Great Danes that slept on the bed with us, a 225# male and a 115# female. We'd raised the little boy from an 11-week old pup, and he was truly our little boy - the closest we'd ever have to having kids. When they slept on the bed, the boy would sleep at the foot of the bed and the girl would sleep at the head - unless we'd just come back from a weekend away, vacation, etc, and then the little boy slept at the head of the bed for some "Dad & Pop" time. The little girl would get grumpy about it, but dealt with it. This went on their whole lives.

We lost the little boy at just over 8 years to wobblers. It was damned tough, and the little girl stood by our side the rest of that day. But that night when we went to bed, she refused to sleep at the head of the bed. And even though we were both in mourning, I felt like the little boy's spirit was there comforting us both. After that night, the little girl slept at the head of the bed like normal.

R153 Wobblers is a neurological condition in dogs (and maybe other animals?) that have longer backs, like Great Danes, Weimaraners, Beagles, etc where the nerves closer to the tail don't fire properly. Thus, they start out with a few issues when standing, but it can grow to them not being able to walk, not being able to control their bladders, etc.

I was with a co-worker at our Christmas party with a couple hundred other employees. At one point the was a raffle with prizes ranging from dvd players to 200 cash. Almost half way through I blurted out to a co-worker to stand up because they were going to call her number. And less than 10 seconds later, the host reached into the bowl of over 150 tickets and pulled out her ticket and number. My friend was shocked. I don't know what prompted me to blurt out about winning, but this kind of things happens to be occasionally. I have learned to go with my intuition. I cannot control it. Very strange.

by Anonymousreply 163July 3, 2019 8:20 PM

About two years ago I was walking to work one morning down our main road (UK northern English town) and there was a young man, about 5 9 with short mousey brown hair walking about 10 yds in front of me with a white t-shirt and dark trousers, maybe jeans. There were the usual small troop of workers heading into town and some traffic up and down. Not busy, but 'waking up' you could say. There was someone much further ahead down the pathway in front but he was much nearer to me.

I glanced down for a moment to briefly check my phone in my bag and then looked up. Within a matter of seconds he had gone. I looked across the road but there was no sign of him, crossing or on the other side. He wasn't behind me on the other side either. On our right there was a wide gateway opening onto a factory courtyard off the main road. Within a few footfalls I'd reached this point, wondering if he had ducked in there but he hadn't, and the enclosed courtyard was too big and open to not be seen in it. There was nowhere to run to and hide in mere seconds and he was not behind the wall to my right. I was so surprised I checked it automatically when I got up to it.

He'd just vanished. And no I wasn't on drugs or drunk. I was just walking to work, thinking of nothing in particular. He would have had to have sprinted like a track star into the factory building or across a main road within seconds of me looking away and looking back up and I'd have seen him anyway.

I can't explain it with physics but figure if he was a spirit he'd just gone out for a stroll, lol. I always feel privileged to see things I can't explain easily because it's so rare for me. That was definitely one of those times.

by Anonymousreply 177July 7, 2019 4:35 AM

The strangest thing that happened to me this year (I've been alive for more than a year, so I'm not exactly answering the question) so far:

In my car, I was 0.2 miles away from my home, driving on the arterial, when I saw a cop car speeding toward us in the eastbound lane (I was westbound) and commented to my husband "Oh that's interesting" then we saw another cop car coming up northbound from the intersection we just passed, turning left and passing us on our left. Both speeding cars' cherry bars were flashing so I remembered "yield to the right for sirens and lights" and I'd just put my right-turn signal indicator on and commenced turning the steering wheel when my husband, the passenger in the front seat, peered over to his right and shrieked "YIIIII!" because:

A cab sped ON the sidewalk, passing us on the right by inches, coming from the north of the intersection behind us and turning right to go westbound. A police car following him sped past us on our left. The police car that had come toward us, the first one we saw, hairpinned in the intersection and followed.

I couldn't get out of the chase area without risking a collision with high-speed vehicles. What was strange was that I was calm throughout the whole thing, no panic, no adrenalin, just 'we have to wait for the cars to leave, then we can go on our way." I described our experience to a few people: they cried "you could have been KILLED!" "But we weren't. There was no place for us to go. Staying put so the cars could speed past us was the best option."

by Anonymousreply 178July 7, 2019 4:40 AM

I'm not the OP R176, but R175 should be more of a concern of yours.

If ghosts are real it's horrible to think of these poor souls trapped on Earth where no one can see or hear them.

by Anonymousreply 180July 7, 2019 9:12 AM

R180 If you're a Medium you can see and speak to them I had an assistant who was a Medium she always said she wished she never had this ability.

by Anonymousreply 181July 7, 2019 10:20 AM

Why? Because it’s horrible to see them? Are they suffering?

by Anonymousreply 182July 7, 2019 10:25 AM

Can you tell us about this assistant's experiences that made her so uncomfortable, r181?

by Anonymousreply 183July 7, 2019 10:26 AM

R182 and R183 some of the people who came forward to her were horribly disfigured because they died in an accident or were murdered. Some of the entities were evil and up to no good. We worked in an old building about 120 years old and had 2 ghosts one was playful and mischievous on another floor there was a second ghost, she would never go on that floor alone, she would never say why.

by Anonymousreply 184July 7, 2019 10:41 AM

I don't believe that ghosts are necessarily "souls trapped on earth" at all. I think it's highly plausible that when we see ghosts, we're actually witnessing brief tears in the fabric of time; different dimensions, if you will. The real question is whether or not what we're witnessing is animate/conscious, or if it's just a mirage. There is a branch of parapsychology that believes that what we see as ghosts are merely "imprints "of people that have existed in specific places; kind of like images that replay over and over, anchored to a place. For people who believe this, "ghosts," or apparitions, are not conscious beings—they are merely images of something that once was. While this seems most scientifically possible to me, I have had one supernatural occurrence in my life that doesn't compute with this—it was a poltergeist incident where I actually witnessed something get thrown off a table. This occurred in a house of a family friend that they insisted was haunted. For that reason alone, I believe there are conscious spirits/ghosts/whatever you'd like to call them, who can exert influence on the living and material world. It's possible that both these kinds of ghosts and the "imprint" sort coexist.

by Anonymousreply 185July 7, 2019 10:44 AM

I like to term that phenomenon "psychic residue."

I believe spirits don't ascend immediately. They hang around for a little while, weeks or months in the cases of my family, then their psychic residue ison't detected anymore. A strange occurrence, possibly the strangest I witnessed, is that two days after my brother was cremated, I was in the tatami room, the one scented with lilies where his corpse lay on dry ice for a few days, and I couldn't feel sad in that room. Outside that room I felt raw, sleepless, surreal. As I exited the room his widow with a note of excitement told me that his spirit had returned.

We argued a bit about where he was. I thought it was the tatami room, she claimed he was in the family room, sleeping on the sofa. "Spirits don't sleep," I told her. "He travelled a long distance and he's tired!" "He has no physical energy!" However, the distance between that sofa and where he lay "in state" in the tatami room was a meter or two.

by Anonymousreply 186July 7, 2019 1:49 PM

r186 ^^^ I should mention that his widow (Far East) and I ("Far" West) differ in cultural backgrounds and belief systems.

by Anonymousreply 187July 7, 2019 1:51 PM

I've witnessed the thing called datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 188July 7, 2019 3:51 PM

I don't know if this even belongs on this thread, but it brings the word "coincidence" to a new level.

Five years ago I was visiting Pensacola, FL, and met a very hot, extremely personable construction foreman at a bar. Not even a gay bar. We clicked immediately and spent the night doing everything sexual imaginable. I would definitely have liked to see him again, but I had to go back to my home in SoCal and he had to head back to Jacksonville. For some reason, we never exchanged names or numbers, except for first names.

Last month I was walking past a street construction project a block from my home and noticed one of the workers—obviously a foreman—talking to a couple of crew members. I couldn't believe it. It was my buddy I'd met in Pensacola, more than 2,000 miles away and five years ago!

As he talked to his men, he suddenly caught sight of me, quit talking in mid sentence and came over and hugged me. Turns out he'd found a job with a California construction company and moved to my town in 2017. He never knew I lived here, but it wouldn't have done him any good even if he did because he didn't know my name.

We've subsequently fooled around a few times. I doubt anything serious will come of it because we're poles apart on too many issues (he's a Trump fan, ferchrissake), but he makes up for it by being a great fuck.

by Anonymousreply 189July 7, 2019 8:08 PM

R60 Your post was the reason I registered to this site after years of being just a daily thread reader. I tried replying, but my post was too long each time.

I too had to put down my dear best friend, Rocky, this past February 9th. That little boy was so full of personality, attitude, indifference, happiness, grouchiness, etc, depending on how he decided to feel that day. He was 15 years and one month. I spent a fortune taking care of him as he was one of the sole bringers of happiness in my life these past near two decades, but one can’t stop age and disease progression.

I take care of my mother who has slowly been slipping away day by day. Advanced age and deteriorating mind. So Rocky was something that made my days tolerable and worth trudging through. I wouldn’t trade my life with anyone else, but caring for an aging parent who is not who she once was can be a mental strain at times. So to have that little guy there for 15 years one month, I was incredibly fortunate. I could make a post 12 feet long just saying all that dog meant to me, and how lost I’ve been since I had to make that agonizing decision to put him down. But I’ll say he was put down peacefully, at the right time, while still happy and cognizant and pain free, in his bed at home, with all his toys, after getting his favorite treat of bananas, and buried in my side backyard under the shade of the drake elm, next to my arbor.

I loved that dog more than anything. He was there at just the right time in my life, and became such a huge part of my life and mind. The past few months have been quite difficult, as I still expect to wake up with him grumpily growling at me from my bedroom door to wake up and fix his breakfast. Indifferent attitude when I’d call him to play. Bossy tude when HE wanted to play, or wanted a banana slice. He was treated like a king and had the mindset of one, but would stay at my side and softly growl when begrudgingly showing affection.

Three sundays ago I had a dream. I don’t dream. I can’t ever recall having one. But I had one then. And it was one of those ones that people say feels too real and takes place over many days in that one session. I dreamt Rocky came back. Literally crawled out of the grave in the yard. Not horror-wise like Pet Semetary, just dug himself out. And I spent multiple days with him. I can’t remember WHAT exactly happened in the dream. Or what we did. But I remember being extremely happy and being WITH him. I’d like to imagine I held him a lot, played with him, fed him his favorite foods, pet him as he fell asleep, etc.

But all I know is I awoke that Sunday morning with a huge smile. And despite my creaky back, I swiftly jumped out of bed, breaking my glasses that were on the floor, and starting towards the bedroom door to pick up my little boy again and go feed him his breakfast, only to see the empty doorway, and feel that heavy punch in the stomach that he wasn’t there and never would be again.

I have no idea why I had that dream. Or at that time. Armchair psychiatrists can tie in the breaking of the glasses to my belief he was really there in my dream. I don’t know. All I DO know is it made me realize even more just how much I miss that little crumb. And how burying myself in work, or hobbies, or spending time with or caring for others won’t ever replace that friendship and love I have for and from him, and the void his death created.

On a side note, and I mention this not as a “cry for help”, but ever since I was a teen I’ve struggled with suicidal thoughts and multiple attempts, none of which anyone knows. I like to say I’ve gotten through it, but I’ve realized that it will likely be my “out” one day. When? No idea. But I have obligations to fulfill, so I feel that keeps those thoughts at bay. However I always did tell myself that when that day DOES come, I want to go on a nice day. A pretty day. To me at least. And that’s a cold, crisp “winter” day, with a clear blue sky. To me those are the most beautiful days. The day my little boy was put to sleep and buried, it was such a day. 2/9/19

by Anonymousreply 193July 8, 2019 5:40 AM

I I was driving on the Major Deegan expressway (NYC) in the rain when my brake line was severed. I had absolutely no brakes going 60 mph, cars all around me, no way to slow down or stop my Pathfinder. I am not the kind of person who stays calm in a crisis, but on that day, it was almost like the reality didn’t register. I was just like hmm, it feels like I have no brakes. I barely remember getting off at the exit, driving onto the Grand Concourse (around Yankee Stadium) and into a gas station where I was able to stop by hitting a high curb. It wasn’t until I turned the car in to the dealership (there had been a recall) that I realized what had happened and how easily I could have been hurt or killed. I have no explanation for how I handled it- it was like someone else took over my body and mind.

by Anonymousreply 194July 8, 2019 9:59 AM

Pretty sure I've told this story here before, but no one will remember, so I'll do it again...

Several years ago my mother and I were out on a weekday evening in the fall. We were driving on a busy street in a commercial area of our city (CA), on our way to a drugstore located next to a couple of very tall office buildings. The sky was filled with dark clouds that were just a shade or two lighter than the regular night sky, though it hadn't rained yet (I'm not sure it ever did that night). When we had exited the store and were getting back into the car, I happened to glance up at the sky above the tall building next to the drugstore - and saw a small but vivid ball of blue neon light hovering high above the roof. It seemed disembodied, just hanging there in the sky randomly, but it was jittery, not fixed in place. I kept looking at it and pointed out to my mom. We watched it for a couple of minutes and as the clouds shifted a little, we made out that it was actually attached to some sort of triangular black aircraft that was hovering there, blending into the clouds and night sky due to its darkness. It moved around a bit but stayed in the same general vicinity. It was perfectly silent as far as I could tell, no engine noise or anything like that. We eventually got into the car and started heading west towards home, but I kept looking behind us when I could and though the 'craft' part seemed to sort of fade in and out of sight, the light was always visible. At one point when we were about halfway home, we pulled over in a residential neighborhood and got out to look at it some more - it had moved farther down and a bit higher but it was still there.

Later that night, I Googled to see if I could find out what it was - I was thinking maybe it was weather service-related - but I never turned up any other accounts of seeing a single blue neon light like that. I have no idea what it was, but the way it blended in with the sky was just eerie.

R194, you likely remained calm because the scenario you painted would be impossible. Further, Nissan never recalled Pathfinders due to severed brake lines.

Even if ONE brake line was indeed severed, you would still have the others. It’s not like the movies. You could also downshift and/or use the parking or emergency brake.

by Anonymousreply 196July 8, 2019 12:12 PM

then I saw assburgers!

by Anonymousreply 197July 8, 2019 2:04 PM

R192 This is/was my little boy. The banana pic is my lock screen on my phone. That anger/annoyance was common when he wanted his treat. That was July of last year. A few weeks after his first pancreatic episode. He was diagnosed then with IBD by the internist at the Medvet hospital. She gave the okay to let him slowly go back to his safe treats to help him eat. Over the next six months he very slowly degraded. Going from 12 to 9 lbs. on different steroids and having a loose stool attack every couple weeks. The strong steroids just had a bad effect on him. One would affect his heart. Another his blood count. Another his eyes and nervous system. By the time the week of February 9th rolled around he lost interest in eating much at all. Docs at medvet Friday February 8th said his kidneys were failing (was drinking a ton of water and urinating) and blood levels were not good. Said they could keep him the weekend on fluids and food and wait until Monday, but could make no guarantees, and said anything done would only be short term. I didn’t want to leave him in a strange place two hours away especially if he was to pass, so I took him home and made the plans to have him put down at home while still relatively happy and pain-free. The pic with the arm wrap is Rocky just after getting his last meal of his favorite treat of bananas. About 20 minutes before his vet came and put him down. If I could trade the rest of my life just for a few more minutes with that little bugger, I would.

R198 he's absolutely precious. His face had so much character. I believe that his spirit came back to tell you goodbye and let you know that he loved you and was at peace. I believe that was what happened in r60s case too.

by Anonymousreply 199July 8, 2019 4:39 PM

R198, I don’t want to take away from your loss, but you are so clearly capable of giving great and selfless love to a small dog, and so many dogs in shelters need that loving home. Could you, maybe, think about being a foster-carer for dogs before they find their forever-families, if you’re not ready to adopt?

R201 in regards to that, sure why not.

by Anonymousreply 202July 8, 2019 10:26 PM

R194 This was 2012 and there most certainly was a recall for rusting chassis underneath the car. The chassis rusted and dropped, cutting the brake lines. So you’re wrong.

by Anonymousreply 203July 8, 2019 10:48 PM

R194 In 2011 Nisan recalled 196,000 Pathfinders and Infiniti QX4s for dangerous rust condition that could cause suspension to collapse.

This was back in '93, a couple of months after I got my first drivers license. It had been raining non-stop for 3 days in a row. When the rain finally let up, I decided to go for a drive. Not even 2 minutes away from our house, the storm came back full throttle. I didn't realize what happened at the time, but it was actually a microburst (I thought it was a tornado). You could barely see a few feet from the car. There happened to be a cop in front of me, and he stopped and put his lights on. I got nervous and tried to pass him, only to realize why he stopped - there was a large tree down in the road. So I backed up and turned around to try and go back home, only to discover two more trees had come down behind me shortly after I had just passed them. I ended up having to give two of the properties major lawn jobs to drive around the trees, but oh well.

Nothing too surreal, but I was in a little group of strangers waiting to get into the Viper Room to see Buck Cherry (I didn't like 'em, but a good friend was visiting from Texas, a little bit connected to the band and wanted to go).

We were chatting around about bands and venues for a while and one good-looking guy quietly said to a good-looking gal, "Are you a twin?" I thought maybe it was a cheesy chat-up line, but she said, "Yeaaaaaaaah... do you know my sister?"

He smiled a little and said, "No; I'm a twin, too."

I'd heard all their conversations and there was no mention of siblings, being a twin, etc., but he picked up on something."

by Anonymousreply 207July 9, 2019 5:13 AM

I have an unusual tendency to have waking dreams; that is, I wake up and am still dreaming, as if I were in a movie. It has happened a half dozen times I can recall. The worst was when I woke up in a fright, feeling someone looking at me, and saw a tall, transparent man standing at the foot of the bed. I was paralysed with fright. After a minute or so, he vanished into thin air.

I learned these events are not psychic phenomena, but a brain thing called hypnopompic hallucinations.

My grandmother had a half brother who was six. He never lied. They lived in Baddeck Nova Scotia in the late 1800’s. He came into the house one day and said a man was speaking to him in the field, and said he’d be back soon to take the boy away.

A few weeks later, the boy became very ill and died. No one knows the cause of death to this day, and he’s the only person in the family who didn’t live a very long life.

by Anonymousreply 209July 9, 2019 10:21 AM

Pathfinder never had a recall because brake lines would be cut, much less ALL of them at the same time.

My folks had a dog - mixed breed, mostly coon hound - before I was born, and it sadly broke loose and got hit by a car and killed as my mom went into labor with me. I knew nothing about this or the dog. When I was 17, on a whim I decided I was going to finally adopt a dog, and in pure coincidence, she was a spitting image of the dog they previously had. They even pulled out some old photo albums to show me, and sure enough she was.

Maybe not as weird as many of the above stories, but recently I saw a dead squirrel on the road, which had been run over by a car. Then as I was watching, these other two squirrels came up to it, and started having sex beside it.

by Anonymousreply 216July 9, 2019 4:26 PM

After my mom died (cancer at age 53) I tried to visit my grandparents (her parents) as often as I could. I lived nearly 100 miles away so it was maybe two or three times a year. One time I felt I needed to visit since I learned my grandfather was in the hospital. I took my grandmother to visit him shortly after I arrived. He was weak but alert while we visited. That night we got a phone call to say that he died in his sleep.

Fast forward seven months and I was visiting my grandmother who was still mourning the loss of my grandfather. Just as I was getting ready to leave I heard a thump and found her in the kitchen on the floor. She had slipped on a throw rug and fell. I called for an ambulance and was told she broke her hip. She died shortly after.

I felt guilty that I was with both grandparents before they died. I'm over it now, but it took a few years.

I once had an apartment at the top floor of a building, and there were several times I literally saw one of my bedroom doors almost close on it's own, then moments later gently open on it's own. It took me a bit before I realized what was going on. My apartment had central air, and in addition, there was a pretty powerful exhaust fan right outside my apartment door. Both would kick on/off automatically. The exhaust fan was apparently creating a bit of a vacuum in my apartment, then when my AC would kick on, one of the vents was pointed right at my bedroom door.

My godfather was taken from the USSR by the Germans as a slave labourer.

After the war, he was afraid to return to Stalin’s Soviet Union, despite the fact his wife, children, and mother were left behind. During Stalin’s life, he had no opportunity to contact them, or know if they were dead or alive. However, in 1956 he had a dream where his mother showed him coins in succession, one coin, then nine, then four, then six. He said he then knew his mother had died in 1946.

He was able to reconnect with his family, with the help of the Red Cross, in 1964. They had been sent to Siberia during the war, and were allowed to return to their village during Khrushchev’s “thaw”. When he did, he learned that his mother had indeed died in 1946.
and there were several times I literally saw one of my bedroom doors almost close on it's own, then moments later gently open on it's own.

As opposed to figuratively seeing it?

And it’s “its,” not it is.

by Anonymousreply 220July 9, 2019 9:28 PM

This is not spooky, but it is strange... We were living in an upscale hipster area of a European city. Our cat was in his last months and to keep him comfortable and going as long as possible, my husband had to give him fluids and medication round the clock. From the window he saw this occur - about three times a week, between 2 and 4 am, a van pulled up to the apartment opposite. Someone came out, rang the bell, and the van driver gave a package to the person who opened the door. The package was about the size of a loaf of bread. We have this on video.

A lawyer friend absolutely vetoed going to the police about this. Any thoughts?

The lawyer friend was right. MYOB is the best policy here.

My family has lived in the same city for many generations. When I got a new job and told my parents, it turned out the company was in the same building in which my dad had worked for his whole career, when it was occupied by a different company. My dad remembered that his great-grandfather had worked in that same neighborhood, so we googled his name to see if we could find out where—and it was the exact same address. It makes me feel a little bit like the family ghost haunting the building. Like “there must always be a Stark in Winterfell.”

by Anonymousreply 226July 9, 2019 11:31 PM

Now that’s strange, yet warming, r226.

An "All You Can Eat" Buffet.

And believe me, I ate, and ate, and ate. The following morning, my fig leaf barely covered my junk.

by Anonymousreply 231July 10, 2019 7:55 AM

This isn't a ghost story (or is it?)

After my sophomore year of college I took a year off to "find myself." I got my first real apartment on the outskirts of Dallas, and a new full-time job as a waiter. I lived alone.

About a week after moving in I came home from work early one evening my eyes immediately rested on a can of Coke sitting on the carpeted floor in the very middle of my living room. I always kept cans of Coke in my fridge. The tab had been half-pulled off (this was the days when tabs came completely off), and the ring of the tab was sticking straight up. The can was full.

I called out thinking maybe a maintenance person was there. No answer. I got spooked and immediately checked every nook and cranny of the tiny apartment. No one was there.

I'd had to unlock two door locks to get in, and I checked the five or six windows in the whole place and they were all locked from the inside.

I know for sure I didn't start to open a can of Coke that morning before I'd left for work, got distracted halfway through pulling off the tab, and left it. Let alone sitting in the center of the living room floor, on carpet.

I called the apartment complex office and they were no help, and claimed they were certain no one had been in the apartment. I assumed they thought I was crazy, absent-minded, or drunk, calling about such a minor strange thing that most people would chalk-up to forgetfulness. By that night got so weirded out that I then actually called the police. They said I could file a complaint if I wanted but because there was no sign of forced entry or robbery it seemed like no crime had been committed. Also they seemed to be implying... it was a can of friggin' soda on your floor you nut.

Days later I met the super for the first time. I mentioned it to him when he was at my place and he just seemed casually baffled and confused by the story, saying he or no one else had been into my apartment since I'd moved in. I'd still suspected it could have been him for a while, as he was really the only option, but later ruled him out as I got to know him over the year and he was a very normal, reliable, nice guy. I couldn't imagine him doing such a weird thing.

To this day I've racked my brain trying to figure out how that can of Coke got there in that half-opened state.

BUT, THERE'S MORE TO THE STORY… (are you on the edge of your seat yet?)

Waiting tables had turned out to be a much harder job that I'd thought. The restaurant I worked at was constantly packed and mis-managed, I often made mistakes and I found the job to be highly stressful. The truth was I just wasn't good at being a waiter. I often dreaded going to work, and left frazzled and upset. I also would sometimes have panic nightmares about work.

One night I dreamed that there was a fully set-up table in the middle of my living room with there women sitting at it who were trying to get my attention because they each wanted a glass of water. So I got three glasses of water and served it to them.

In the morning, I woke up and there were three glasses of water sitting on the carpet in the middle of my living room floor. It was the exact spot where the Coke had been. This one I know I did. I'd done it in a half-dream state. I got up, filled three glasses in my kitchen, and set them on the floor as I "served" the women in the dream. I'd slept-walked. I've never done anything like that before or since in my life.

One detail: the glasses weren't all full.

It caused me to wonder if this was how the can of Coke got there. But I would have noticed it in the morning before I'd left for work.

I have a small white dog now. As I was copying old family photos one day, there I was as a toddler with dog of my grandmother's jumping up on me.

It looks just like my dog.

I then had vague memories of my great uncle killing a dog they had which was my favorite (they lived together) because it was killing chickens.

I asked my dog ...i know...about the chickens and she will cower and look guilty!

This was in the late 90s. Driving along a country road when driving interstate to a wedding, it was about 10pm and about 200m ahead saw a bundle in the middle of the road. As I got closer it became apparent the bundle was a person crouched down in a leapfrog position. I slowed down to approach and was about to stop alongside the person to see what was wrong when he - it was a young guy , about 15 - bolted up like a sprinter and just started running. Like he was racing the car. Off the side of the road 100m or so on a group of kids stood cheering.

People must get fucking bored in the country.

r236/r237 I can tell it won't be. I've been "gifted" in a way my whole life, sometimes I just "know" things.

A strange story:

A childhood playmate had an imaginary friend that she was very vocal about. I have one specific memory of playing with this friend as a three or four-year-old while playmate narrated what the friend was doing and her comments. We were making arrows out of rocks and sticks and the friend was explaining to us how to do it.

At some point, the imaginary friend got banished to a hallway closet. We would go visit her, crouched down on our knees and whispering to her so playmate's mother didn't know we were talking to her. The imaginary friend missed playing with us, wanted us to let her out, kept saying she was sorry, etc. Playmate would repeatedly say that her mother didn't want the friend leaving the closet.

I finally asked at some point why the imaginary friend had to stay there. Playmate informed me that her mom got scared after seeing the friend herself.

I always had a feeling someone was watching me in my room but only when the door was open, never closed. I've had that sensation ever since I was a child. Never even suspected a ghost or whatever. I was obviously coming from the hallway by my bedroom and the bathroom where the hall made a L shape.

Years later, and after I had told my parents about it, they casually mention someone had committed suicide in the house before we moved in and it was in that exact area.

Whatever it was, it never bothered me, nor moved things, nor has it disturbed anyone ever. Fingers crossed.

After my assistant was laid off I had my office and hers along with a photo studio where I shot products for the company catalogues, 3 large spaces. I always felt someone was near the entrance to my office watching me, the owners cat was my only companion for most of the day with occasional visits from my boss and a few salesmen. When the cat started to whine I knew the playful ghost was nearby, the cat was constantly whining.

Up above I said I just know things.. today I was at a park I go to everyday to walk my dog. The park has various sporting areas. I parked in my usual spot. A girl and her coach are hitting softballs in the baseball field surrounded with the backstop and full fence around.. She was good, always hitting the out field. As I we were walking back to my car she is continuously hitting the out field and I say to the person I'm with, "that girl is going to hit my car" . Now she is way over at the field and I approach my car she hits a ball that goes to the right and totally over the fence, and heads right for me. The ball bounces and hits my car. The coach comes running apologizing, there was no damage because it bounced first, but it was the only ball that she missed on. I do this all the time, I just knew it she would. This what I do, it's part of my life.

Not me but my mom used to tell me about the time she was in a catholic boarding school. She had a room with two beds for herself, and at night she would hear someone tossing and rustling the sheets. But she never saw anything. Also every morning she saw a giant spider coming down from the ceiling until it nearly touched her than it disappeared. She would then stare at her hands that looked like they were stained with blood. I don't know if it was some kind of recurring nightmare but it sounded creepy.

by Anonymousreply 249July 11, 2019 12:04 PM

When I was growing up, the 3rd floor of my parents 1920s house was a large attic. One end was a finished apartment that had originally been for staff. My older brother took the room first. He was plagued by very tough emotional/psychological problems at the time and was actually in and out of hospitals while he lived there.

He would wake up screaming with nightmares that brought the whole family to the attic to calm him. Though his dreams were all different, they all occurred in the room, were violent and supernatural in nature. One I remember him telling us was that the doorknob to his apartment turned hot, then alive and bit his hand when he tried to open the door. Freaky shit like that.

After he moved out to his own place I moved up to the apartment. There was definitely something wrong with the place. There were uneven temperatures throughout the space, funky electrical issues and unexplainable scents that would permeate the room. One night, at about 3am, I woke to hear light sobbing. The sound was hanging in the air around the bed, and it was the voice of a woman. I was alarmed and raised myself a little from the bed by my elbows. Then, in addition to the sobbing woman, I heard the angry cries of a man. The two different agitated voices got louder and louder and closer and closer to my head. The odors in the room changed, and I could feel that one side of my body was hot, and the other cold.

Although I was sort of frozen with fear, I decided I better get out of the room and go downstairs. When I reached the 2nd floor landing, my parents were there in their bathrobes. They had heard the cries that turned to screams and also saw the lights flicker in their room as they got up to see what was wrong. I moved back to one of the regular bedrooms on the 2nd floor without any further incidents. We talked the next morning about what had occurred, and whether some of my brothers’ problems may have been exacerbated by the troubled space. But after that, nobody ever mentioned it again. We all just left it alone, unexplained.

Now 25 years later, I have another spectral issue at my country house that is ongoing and unresolved. I'll report on that later.

by Anonymousreply 250July 11, 2019 12:30 PM

Not sure if this counts, but it was a constant air of sadness and oppression, which I consider a true haunting.

My parents were separated for my whole life. My father was a sad, gentle alcoholic veteran who lived in a house in a part of our city that was mostly industrial. It was a dark and dreary house, falling-apart old (the bathtub was an old claw-foot iron one). It was like the house in “Fight Club”. There were two spots in the house where my sister and I felt safe, and we spent most of our time at the house inhabiting those spots. He tried to make a playroom for us in the basement and we refused to go down there. Even if we were fighting, we’d make a truce before bedtime, because we had to sleep upstairs and had to make bathroom trips together. At some point, we moved from the front bedroom to the back bedroom, and there was another small bedroom we never ever entered until I was probably a teenager. He never told forbade us to go in that room, but we just didn’t. There was just a desk and chair In that room, nothing alarming. In one of the closets there were holes in the wall from shotgun spray.

Then he bought a foreclosed house. This house had neighbors but was still creepy. Supposedly it had been a drug house, and when he first moved in, there were sketchy people dropping by to see the old owner. My sister had moved in for a spell, and showed me where, among the busy flowers of her wallpaper, someone had scrawled “I’m not a whore I’m just a 12 year old girl” in small pencilled writing down near the baseboard.

When he died, neither one of us wanted to anything to do with that dump, and we let the bank repossess it.

I sometimes wonder if his depression made him choose these places with sinister energy. You know how in some movies, the production is just dark and muted colors, and even scenes in broad daylight are dark somehow? My dad always lived in them.

Nothing overtly scary ever happened, but the energy in these places was remarkably dark and sinister.

My grandparents bought a large old house in Cincinnati, OH built in the 1920s by the standards of the 1920s it was a mansion with an enormous living room that covered the width of the house. Her bedroom was next to the bathroom she claimed that every morning she could hear someone brushing their teeth and running the water early in the morning when no one was up then run down the stairs.

by Anonymousreply 252July 11, 2019 2:05 PM

R252 There are similar stories in my family. In my grandparents house at night there was the sound of people talking/ drinking with the clicking of glasses and vessels. But there was nobody there. Also my mother said (I don't know if it was in the same house) that she often heard the sound of someone bathing at night outside (it was in the 1950's in rural India so it was the sound of someone using a bucket of water and splashing it) and there was no possibility of anyone being there. They said the noises ended after they said a mass there.

by Anonymousreply 253July 11, 2019 3:24 PM

My granny (lots of Welsh and a touch of NA heritage) said when her grand mother died they had the wake in the house. That is not unusual. She was a little girl at the time so early 1900s country folks. As the whole family was in the bedroom with the body her rocking chair started rocking and a ball of fire flew by the window. She said that no one thought anything odd about it as it was her grandmother leaving and letting everyone know. She said it happened when most people died.

by Anonymousreply 254July 11, 2019 4:37 PM

ohhh...I just googled for the first time. The Welsh had candles to light the way and often the fire would travel along! The site would not let me c&p.

by Anonymousreply 255July 11, 2019 4:45 PM

Fascinating. A tradition over 100 years old carried on.

Like my Dutch ancestors calling their mother moer in the 1900s since coming to NY in the 1600s.

"The Amityville Horror" set such a bad precedent for all this gobbledygook about demons and clergy, etc. when it was all a pack of lies. Every haunted house story since has run with a variation of the same scenario.

by Anonymousreply 260July 12, 2019 11:35 AM

r260 Yes but if you watch 'A Haunting' these people didn't seek fame and most of their stories seen very credible. The show has been on for 13 years and some of these hauntings happened prior yet some families didn't speak out until a well after the show was a hit. Some families won't show their faces.

"Lost time event".

I was 20, and was assigned Gravity's Rainbow to read for a big final project in some American Lit. course I took in university.

Nice summer morning, I took a bus out to a nearby seaside tourist town, wandered a bit till I found a nice place to sit and read for a few hours. It's early morning Sunday and I walked through the middle of town and it's almost deserted, not a soul in sight.

I settled on a nice bench under a big jetty on the waterfront. This wasn't some dank hidden under the bridge spot, it was along a walking path along the beach, with nice benches and landscaping. One or two elderly dog walkers went by, as I recall.

I sat cross-legged on a bench and hunched over the book and started to read but found I couldn't concentrate. I gave up after what I thought was maybe 15 minutes of staring at the same page. I did not shift position or otherwise move.

I decided to go get a coffee. I got up, walked back up from under the jetty, and before me was an entire street market all set up along the main street, dozens of people milling around, booths, a little farmer's market.

Had to sit down for a while again, because there was no way that street market was set up and populated in that (so I thought and still think) 15 minutes I was under the jetty trying to read. Not to mention the noise of all the hauling trucks, setting up the booths, people yammering. This was quite, quite disturbing.

I did not have a watch and this was pre-cellphones, so I found a payphone with a time display.

I had arrived under the jetty right around 8:30am, going by when the bus I took there was scheduled to arrive. It was now 2pm in the afternoon.

I do not believe I fell asleep, I am at all times an extremely finicky sleeper who can really only fall asleep in my own bed at home, never sitting up and never, ever in public.

I do not believe in supernatural shit, at all. But I am still at a complete loss to explain this experience.

by Anonymousreply 262July 12, 2019 8:08 PM

^ Maybe you had an out of body experience which you don't remember. Physically you may have sat on that bench for five or so hours, but spiritually you were long gone. Just a possibility.

R262 I did the same thing when driving the AlCan from Alaska to my new job in California. I filled up the car, pulled out of the gas station, and put a tape in my tape deck. I sang along and when the tape hit the end, went to turn it over. It was then that I noticed that my gas tank, which had been completely full, was nearing empty. I freaked out, thinking that I had a hole in my gas tank. And being on the AlCan, I figured I was screwed.

It was then that I realized I hadn't driven 30 miles, but rather I'd driven closer to 250 miles. I'd left the gas station at like 12Noon, and the clock showed that it was close to 5pm. What I experienced as 30 minutes was nearly 10 times that.

When I first got my cat 11 years ago, I bought some “fancy” cat toys from a local pet shop. They were very distinctive looking.

Well, they promptly disappeared. Probably shoved under an appliance or something

I moved cross country. I didn’t take any old furniture with me.

One day— about 8 years later— one of those cat toys showed up in the middle of my living room floor at my “new” house.

My cats are still alive, so they aren’t trying to reach me from the other side.

My partner belongs to a volunteer firehouse. About ten years ago an older member died suddenly and horribly in a freak accident in the firehouse one night. Strange things began to happen there, your usual random haunting stuff- radios suddenly turning on and playing, things being moved, strange sounds, etc. Everyone joked that it was the deceased member. One night a younger member brought his new girlfriend to the bar in the firehouse. About 14 people were present- tv on, having drinks, conversations, etc., when this girl suddenly says, “I don’t want to freak anybody out, but there’s a guy here, he says his name is Joe. He’s sitting right there”- and points to his favorite seat. She then described his physical appearance exactly. Her boyfriend was so freaked out he broke up with her soon after. One night I had to go there by myself- and I heard things that I can’t really remember but made me leave immediately. I will not go back there alone.

by Anonymousreply 269July 13, 2019 7:38 AM

R269, why freak out and leave? If Joe died suddenly, he might not even know he's dead. He's probably just as WTF? as you all are. Missed op with the girlfriend, she might have been able to communicate with him. Well, IF any of this is true, mind you.

by Anonymousreply 270July 13, 2019 8:30 AM

That's a fascinating story R269. I had a similar incident where a friend of my parents (he was elderly--in his 80s) died in his house after a long battle with emphysema. After he died, his wife told my mom that she heard him walking up and down the hallway at night, and saw a shadow figure standing at the end of the hall once. She had other weird occurrences, like the grandfather clock randomly going off in the middle of the night, and the faucet in the kitchen turning on by itself. I was in high school at the time and was having lunch with my mom one weekend, and she had to stop by the house to water plants since the woman was out of town. While my mom was outside, I sat in the living room (the room where he actually died), and out of nowhere heard a loud crash/thud in the bathroom, followed by the sound of water. Upon inspecting the bathroom, the porcelain toilet tank had literally cracked down the back and water was flooding the bathroom. It was spring time, so it wasn't a result of pipes freezing or anything. The chances of something like that occurring were virtually none, and it just happened to occur in the small timeframe in which we were there. It was the strangest thing I've ever witnesses. We had to turn the water off and call the woman's grandson to have it fixed. I 100% believe that house was being haunted by the man. There was a significant family dispute going on over the man's will, as he was very wealthy, and if I remember right, the wife was basically trying to take everything and leave his kids high and dry. I honestly believe he was angry about this and causing a ruckus around the house.

by Anonymousreply 273July 13, 2019 9:40 AM

The daugther of one of my colleagues has the uncanny ability to "read" people and situations, usually for the worst. This doesn't make her life happier.

One day my colleague told me about the visit her daugther had paid the office a few years before. As the daughter was leaving by the elevator, she pointed to another colleague walking past and said to her mother: "That one's stealing from the company." Her mother dismissed the thought but sure enough, a year later that woman was indeed fired for embezzlement.

When I was hired, some three years later, the lawsuit was still ongoing. She had been embezzling money for years.

I'm not sure Amityville was a hoax but just exaggerated with some stuff just made up. They left all their shit and got out. They didn't even go back. Something happened and there was a cleansing of the house so maybe whatever was there was driven out.

by Anonymousreply 288July 15, 2019 4:53 PM

In the 80s, I was invited along on a regular sailing regatta in Hawaii by a friend who crewed for the owner of the boat. There were about 4 of us in the cockpit, plus the owner. It was about 6 pm, sun shining. As I sat there, I stared into the open cabin and saw a Japanese woman arguing animatedly with someone I couldn't see. After a few minutes of this, I said to the others with me in the cockpit, "Isn't that woman ever going to come out?" They laughed and told me the cabin was empty, and when I looked again, I saw that it was.

by Anonymousreply 289July 15, 2019 6:08 PM

R288, I agree about the Amityville situation. I saw George and Kathy Lutz interviewed once, she in the final months of her life, and I remember thinking, 'those people have been through something'. Both of them seemed, for lack of a better word, haunted - like survivors of some terrible ordeal. Which, if they were being truthful, was exactly what they were. I do think whatever happened has been twisted and distorted in various ways, and that they got involved with some sketchy people in the course of trying to get help, tell their story and rebuild their lives afterward. But still, I do truly think they experienced something.

by Anonymousreply 290July 16, 2019 4:28 AM

Regarding Amityville, leaving behind a house and all your belongings in the hopes that the book about your story will be a blockbuster is an awfully big gamble. I believe something haunts that place.

by Anonymousreply 291July 16, 2019 4:39 AM

r291 Yes I do not believe they fled and left their things in hopes of getting rich. They had just moved in. Something really awful happened in that house. Certain people are more sensitive and may attract or be prone to being attacked by certain entities. Or the house was cleansed which is what I think. I do not think it is haunted any longer due to being cleansed.

by Anonymousreply 292July 16, 2019 6:10 PM

In January of 1992 I was driving on Route 123 in Norwell, Massachusetts, just past the home of Owen Wilson's grandmother. It was a bit after 8 at night in January, so while not snowy, it was a very cold, clear night. I had a Volvo station wagon at the time and it's one of the few cars I've ever owned that had heated seats and they were on. Norwell then was a much more rural, undeveloped place that it is today and so it was desolate at night.

It's a two lane state highway with a State Police barracks in the center of town, right off the highway, so it's a road where people drive carefully - I was driving at or under the speed limit. I remembered later it was just after 8 pm because a show I was listening to on the radio ended at 8 just as I was pulling off the main highway to Cape Cod, Route 3, to get onto Route 123 and I wasn't interested in the program that followed. I turned off the radio.

So: it's dark and it's cold and it's quiet and it's deserted - not many cars and nobody outdoors. And off to my left I start seeing - first in glimpses from my peripheral vision, then full on - lights moving in the sky in ways and at speeds I'd never seen before over a farm field about a mile west of Norwell Center. I remember them so vividly - bright blue-ish white lights darting around in the sky. They'd move incredibly quickly, then stop to hover, then move again in totally random (from my perspective, anyway) patterns. And that's all I remember.

I woke up in the car about a mile from where I first saw the lights, having pulled off (correctly - not like I had skidded there) to the side of the road, with the engine running and the sunroof open on a 15 degree night. It was almost 9 pm and the sunroof had been closed, at least before 8 pm. There were no scars on my hip from the oft-mentioned probe, no pain, no heightened sense of awareness, no nada. Just me waking up on the side of the road, about 50 minutes of lost time after I first saw the lights. And an open sunroof on a bitterly cold night. Thinking, what the fuck just happened here?

I remembered everything that evening until I saw the lights and everything else that happened after I woke up. But there's almost an hour of my life I can't account for. Since then no memory of what happened has bubbled up from my subconscious, no experience has made me relive it, and no great knowledge or insight has been given to me. It happened but I have no idea why.

by Anonymousreply 293July 16, 2019 7:25 PM

Ok then...

Genius, rational, skeptical hs friend that was jealous of all my ufo sightings. We were going out for the night and talking about it. Then we saw a strange light over a large forested area by the road as he brings up the topic. He was so excited! lol Then he tells me we are watching Repo Man on his folks new satellite system when we get home. I ask what is that about. He says that i'll see...

We graduate and are home for break from college. He comes over and we drive down this dirt road into the same forest/swamp to smoke and catch up. In front of us at least two lights appear in the 100 yard away tree line. They dance and pulsate and come closer and shrink back. It was a trip.

He goes back. I am at a local college and would see these lights everytime. I carried my sisters back there and they would appear. Called the airport one and no helicopters or anything. Sure they think I was crazy.

Couple years later? Moved back home and am driving back from work. Look over at the forest, as I always did. Didn't see anything. Do seem to remember doing something to the radio though. So, go to the kitchen and the timer on the microwave says it is an hour later than it should be. I remember because we clocked out and it was my normal time. Go upstairs to my room and turn the tv on. PBS, the alien face from Streiber's book and "the most common abduction experience is missing time." It was a Charlie Rose interview. OK then.

Anyway, one of many things.

One we were tripping on mushroom tea with some friends out in the boonies. We were at the picnic table in the yard. Music, joking, twilight but not too dark. IDK we all look up and there is a HUGE black triangle floating silently over us maybe a coupe hundred yards above us. We went silent and watched it float on by. Another one with skeptics there. It was wild.

by Anonymousreply 295July 16, 2019 7:47 PM

I don't "call" them anymore as I don't know their intentions and have not really been looking.

by Anonymousreply 296July 16, 2019 7:49 PM

When I was very young, half-a-century ago, I saw 'something' in the sky that I interpreted as what I called a 'moon capsule' because the NASA missions were huge news at the time. I don't know what I actually saw, but it looked like the bright outline of a machine of some kind. It didn't remind me of an airplane, or a helicopter, even then I knew what those were. I just kept thinking 'machine'. Whatever it was disappeared pretty quickly, and I've never seen anything like it again.

by Anonymousreply 297July 16, 2019 7:55 PM

My sister, 10 years older, and my younger sister went to the store. She ran in hysterical. Baby sister was crying. "There's a UFO outside!"

She said they saw it and it was so low that she had to slow down. We go outside to see. and there it was slowly moving over the tree line about 100 yards away and probably as long. In silhouette with one light on the front and back. We all watch and a skeptic uncle was visiting. The dogs acted odd, running around. We had a lot of dogs... A helicopter flew over us watching it, I presume. Mom scurried us inside.

by Anonymousreply 298July 16, 2019 8:03 PM

I hated riding horses. I would not want someone on my back. Sister was, and is, a horse woman. Eleven or twelve she has me on the horse and she is on the pony. We ride to the back and Sugar, the horse, decides to eat grass. She would not lift her head for me. I look up and there are two cigar shaped crafts slowly going in tandem. Looked like airplanes with no wings. And airplanes would not be so close to each other. You could see what looked like windows along them. I tell my sister. She shes and says that she is outta there. She books. The stubborn horse is still eating and I am frantic. Then I look up and they are gone.

I conjured up a cat once. I was about 8, sitting on the curb in my neighborhood feeling lonely. I had always wanted a cat but my parents wouldn’t let me have one because I was allergic. I sat on the curb, feeling sorry for myself, and thinking about how fun it would be to have a cat. Then, from the corner of my eye up on the road above my house (which eventually became a highway) I saw a speck of something moving down the road. I keep watching, it keep moving closer. It turned the corner, came down another road and walked right up to me. A cute little cat. Kept it 2 days, had to give it away because I was sneezing to death. Just a fantastic coincidence.

There have been a lot of weird things that have happened to me over the years. My family has various "gifts" and we usually know when one of us is having problems. My Aunt called it "The Knowing" which sounds really creepy but it's pretty mundane.

At any rate, my current house is haunted. I even know the name of the person haunting although he is around less now than when I first moved in.

He would talk to me on occasion and wanted to show himself but I begged him not to. That shit scares me. I know it sounds weird but I can deal with them talking to me but I don't need to see it.

He would say things like " I am glad you put that clover in for my bees". The old neighbor knew the dude in life (the neighbor passed away at 90 last year) and I asked him if there were any bee keepers in the area back in the day. As a matter of fact, the guy that used to live in your house kept a bunch of hives in the back. Is that so?

I had a medium come out and she picked up on him right away and asked me if I knew the place was haunted. Yep. And there's a spectral cat that hangs out in the old garage, too.

The medium said the ghost likes me so he hangs around. I like him, too, but I have told him that he can move on as he pleases. He is free to go.

I've post this on The DL before. My partner at the time and I took a friend's son for a sail in NY harbor one Sunday afternoon in late June 2001. Afterwards we went to the top of the World Trade Center. As soon as we got on the roof clouds came in and the temperature dropped, I got a really bad feeling, a sense of foreboding. I looked at my partner and knew he was feeling the same thing. I said, "let's get out of here." We did. We never discussed what we experienced that afternoon, even after 9/11.

by Anonymousreply 312July 17, 2019 1:30 AM

I was in the financial district so was right in ground zero before/during/after, (started having seizures almost exactly 11mos after) but the year anniversary the wind in NY was unlike ANY other. I thought it was an eerie strong wind, like a lot of energy had been kicked up that day. It was a very strange energy.

Last year for about a period of two months all kinds of things were happening. I saw a man walk down my corridor one morning. I called out to him as I thought that it was my partner, but when I went to ask him why he was up so early he was still sound asleep with his ear plugs and sleep mask on . Our female Bengal cat was placed outside the locked flat one day when we got home . No one has the key and we have a concierge. The cats were going crazy . The male kept wanting to escape , puffing out his tail and running . They wouldn’t go past the door jam. Things started to go missing almost every day and then when found ( some still are not ) they were placed in very odd places almost perfectly as almost to catch our attention . I honestly thought that I was losing my mind , but started to speak to a couple of other trustworthy Brits I know about what was going on and they acted like it was just the norm and that England is just a very haunted country . I was put in touch with a healer who did home cleansing and did dowsing . Yes i thought that it was a load of shit. After a week the occurrences picked up and things got even crazier . I was planning on moving out . Then she told me to start sageing the place and that she would still keep working on sending these souls to the light . I thought it was nuts but I was desperate so I ordered some off of amazon and went about my proper warlock ways ! Ha. That was it ! Never again have we had a dark energy in here . I still burn the sage from time to time . That’s all I got . Something was up and it did leave . This is coming from a former skeptic .

r311 That is all you talk about? Ummm like I would ask a million great questions. Why doesn't he go to the light? How did he know he was dead? How does it feel? Does he get hungry?

by Anonymousreply 317July 17, 2019 6:33 AM

Honestly, r317, he usually just says things to me. It's not like we sit down for tea and a chat.

He is well aware he is dead. He hasn't gone to the light because he rather likes hanging out around here. The medium told me to let him know he can leave so I have told him several times it's ok for him to cross. I don't get the sense he has crossed yet but his energy is fading and he hasn't been around in quite some time.

How does it feel? I had the impression he had a lot of physical pain in life. Arthritis in his back, I believe. Without a physical body, there isn't the pain. He was glad of that.

No hunger. And no concept of time, cold, heat or anything like that.

Aside from my ghostly friend, the weirdest thing that ever happened to me, by far, was when the oak tree in the front yard spoke to me. No, I am not kidding. No, I have never had tree speak to me before.

It has spoken twice in ten years.

The first time it happened, I was talking to it about a year after I moved in. I was standing near it, admiring how big it is and said, "look how big you are! I bet you're about 100 years old!" To which it replied, "not that much older than you" real matter of fact like. I nearly fell over.

What did it's voice sound like? It had an American accent. It was low but not deep. Neither male nor female but if I had to guess, I would say more male sounding.

And it was right. I asked the old lady who lives next door how old the tree was and she said about 50 years since she remembers when it was a sapling.

The second time it spoke was about 7 years ago. It was fall and it was dropping acorns. I was out walking and picking up the acorns marvelling at how big they were and the tree said, "eat one". I said, "isn't it poisonous?" Oak said no so I pried the shell off and took a small bite. It was bitter but not awful and the meat was firm.

My mom was horrified when I told her because she thought acorns were posionous. But according to Google, they aren't. As a matter of fact, the native Americans used to grind them for flour. You can soak them to leech the bitterness out but they are perfectly edible.

Note that mom was horrified that I ate an acorn. She wasn't fazed when I told her oak said it was ok to do so. This is my family.

I know it sounds crazy but it's true. And I have grown very fond of oak and I speak to it often and will hug it at times. The neighbors think I'm nuts but I don't care.

My house is haunted and my oak tree speaks. Home, sweet home.

by Anonymousreply 319July 17, 2019 7:41 AM

^^^ LMAO. R319, I'm not being facetious. Tell us - when this Oak tree speaks or when the ghosts speak to you - are you hearing with your ears OR are you hearing with your mind? Is it audible or is it more like telepathy? Fascinating stories.

by Anonymousreply 320July 17, 2019 9:41 AM

R311 / R319 Wonderful stories and I think it's great that this is a family gift so you aren't alone and think you are going crazy. If you have other family stories I'd love to hear them.

by Anonymousreply 321July 17, 2019 10:45 AM

R311/R319 Love your story. Same question as R320 -- do you perceive the voice audibly or telepathically? I remember as a kid growing up feeling a connection to the trees around our house as if they were like wise old souls. They never spoke to me but they had a kind of comforting energy.

After my partner had died of AIDS related complications I was very upset, I was close to my aunt who gave me a small clock with a Westminster chime. The clock is reliable the Westminster chime is not and will often chime the wrong hour or not at all. My aunt died several years later on her birthday week at the beginning of December the clocks chime would always be loud and accurate.

by Anonymousreply 324July 17, 2019 11:34 AM

Not me, but. The cleaning lady at the family beach retreat left the house in the middle of cleaning it because she saw my long-dead FIL sitting in his favorite chair with the newspaper. She quit and refused to set foot in the house. Her daughter had to come and get her purse out of the house.

MIL was peeved because “that man wouldn’t hurt a fly!” As much as he was a lovely man, I wouldn’t have wanted to see him sitting there, either. Although I do greet him any time we arrive at the house, and wave goodbye as we are leaving. You never know.

The Lutzes Amityville story got bigger and bigger in the telling. They couldn't afford the house and they say they left in the middle of the night. They may not have. There were so many discrepancies and things that didn't add up in the story or were so blatantly untrue that it's clear the only real horror was Ronny DeFeo killing his family and the Lutzes not feeling comfortable in a house they couldn't even afford.

by Anonymousreply 329July 17, 2019 12:31 PM

Why, just last night I kept dreaming that I needed to pee, but couldn't find a bathroom to go in. I must have gone to a dozen different bathrooms, and for one reason or another I couldn't use it. Lo and behold, when I woke up my bladder was practically bursting at the seams! Coincidence? I don't think so.

R320 - it's mostly telepathy is what you would call it although when the tree spoke, it was very strong and loud.

R322 - they are sentient beings and they know us as individuals meaning they know your energy vs your brother or anyone else. So talk to them. One may answer you.

R321 - my family has two professional card readers, a professional psychic and numerous amateur astrologers, card readers, psychics and mediums. But it isn't something we discuss outside of the family usually.

I thought all families were like ours until I started school then learned to keep quiet about that aspect. So it isn't something I feel comfortable revealing. I would hijack the thread.

One thing I will say that may be of interest to those who have had ghost experiences. It was explained to me like this: life is like being on stage before the curtain goes up. You can hear people "out there" talking and moving around. You know they are there and they exist but you can't see them or interact with them because you are behind the curtain.

Well, that's all death is. A curtain or a "veil" separating us. Sometimes it is thin and you can see or hear the people in the audience. And some people can see and hear "beyond" or through it. And sometimes they on the other side can do the same and visit us.

One last thing before I go back to lurking. Every one of my family members has said that ANYONE can prognosticate or astral travel, etc. Every one has "psychic" ability. It just takes practice.

Thanks to everyone sharing their stories!

We were camping out in the wilds of the West Coast of our Country. We camped just off the beach and use it as a base to explore. We followed a river for about 2 km upstream as we had heard there was a natural pool that was used by the locals to swim. We find find it we think. It was a natural pool that had an inlet and outlet. It was surrounded by clay rootbound banks that were too high to climb. Very gorgeous and secluded. We were knackered by then so we decided to eat before a swim. We blew up our lilos and headed over to a bit of the cliff that jutted out as it was in the sun and was the only flat bit there. We sit and start eating, talking shit the usual. As my mate was staring into the water he sees something moving - thinks Trout or bit of debris. Has another look and freaks out. He nudges us and we all look to where he was pointing. It was an enormous eel. We were all farm kids. Have hunted, smoked and played with Eels all our lives. It was Arthur C Clarkes Mysterious World freaking huge. It slowly ambled around the pool for about half an hour then disappeared. We were all trying to brave it out but this thing must of been at least 3-4 metres long and it was fat. And we all spear hunted so knew how to judge the size of something out of the water in regards to water distortion. It was the most terrifying paddle back to the inlet and I have never been able to swim in rivers again. It still makes my ass tighten just thinking about it now. There were always stories about massive eels taking dogs and even a little child told by our Grandparents when things were a bit more unexplored but I always thought they were made up.

When I was in high school in the 60s I went through a doodling phase. One of my favorite doodles was to write "now and forever". My father walked up behind me one day when I was doodling on a piece of paper, looked over my shoulder to see what I was writing, and gasped. I looked back and asked him what was wrong. He said his brother Jack who had died in the early 30's as a teenager would sit and write "now and forever" all the time. My father and I never had a good relationship and we never once sat down and discussed anything, especially his family so I knew nothing about his brother, other than his name and the fact that he had died long ago.

After my parents were divorced, my father remarried twice. He pretty much disappeared from my life after his second marriage. Even though we both lived in Manhattan, I only saw him about once a decade. His young daughters from his third marriage were not aware of my brothers and me. He died of what was ultimately determined to be Lewy Body Disease, which was then obscure and little-understood..

By the time I learned of his illness, he was unable to recognize anyone or to communicate, and his wife was angry at me about a financial dispute, so I did not visit him. His wife had said he was in a hospice at the end. He lived on the Upper East Side and was on the staff of New York Hospital, so when he died, I assumed it had been at one of their facilities.

Months later, his wife later sent me his autopsy report which was useful not only to explain what had been a mysterious cause of death, but also had his complete medical history. I was surprised to learn that he had died at Beth Israel Hospital downtown near where my mother lived. When I checked my calendar I was even more surprised to realize that I had been in the same hospital at the time of his death. My mother was having surgery there.

This isn't a story about the paranormal but it is certainly usual. Last fall me and my partner were living in a town we hated. Our business was struggling and we were very strapped for cash, with thousands in credit card card. On Nov 6 of last year - I got a message on FB from an heir hunter looking for my dad. I informed him that my dad had passed away four years ago. He informed me that my Dad's first cousin had died intestate in the UK. As my father was now deceased, I was in line to inherit his share of the estate. I thought it was a fraud/scam and so did my partner. I researched the probate for the estate and law firm associated with it in the UK - it looked legit. Long story short - there were two beneficiaries and I ended up inheriting 354K after all was said and done. We moved to a different city, bought a condo and paid off our debt. It was life-changing to the point of miraculous.

by Anonymousreply 353July 19, 2019 8:48 PM

R353, it doesn’t have to be about the paranormal. The OP said “strangest thing” not necessarily ghostly thing, so I think your story fits.

That’s a great story, too, by the way.

Are you and your husband still married? Of course, I’m asking for a *cough* friend.

I was at “the Top of the Hub”, the restaurant on top of Boston’s Prudential building. It’s, maybe, 60 stories. I took my Floridian cousins there. It wasn’t long after 9-11 and while eating, some idiot flew his plane really close to the building. It was close enough to notice and say, “that shouldn’t happen”. We didn’t leave or anything, though.

by Anonymousreply 356July 19, 2019 10:36 PM

R170 I agree 100%. The human mind is remarkable and I'm sure can do many things we don't yet understand.

I've always hated and been annoyed by the fact that people actually believe in this stuff, but I've got to let that go. There is nothing malicious behind it.

The night my grandma died when I was eleven years old, I saw her in a dream. I'd been told she had a heart attack, but not yet that she'd died. At age eleven, it brought me comfort. So, really, who am I to tell someone that it was in their mind? That's what I believe, but I don't guess it does them any good, me saying that.

R290, I watched a Lutz interview years ago - it was after their story started to come under more scrutiny, but years before they died. ITA with your "haunted" assessment. Their attitude was exactly that. It wasn't what I expected - I thought they would come across as just being full of shit, and my bullshit detector is finely tuned. But they really didn't. So if they were lying, they were world-class liars.

When I was a kid about 8 years old, I was very close to my cat. We were in the garden and I whispered in his ear that I wanted him to catch me a little bird but not to cause the bird any harm. He trotted off and next thing I know he’s come to me with a bird in his mouth. The bird was completely still when I took it out of his mouth and lay lifeless in my hand for about a minute, I was sad and felt guilty because I thought he had killed it then all of a sudden it jumped up and flew away. I can’t remember why I wanted him to do this or what compelled me (kids are weird) but I remember being in a almost mesmerized state when I asked him. This has lead me to wonder about if we might have communicated on a much deeper level with animals before modern times.

My sister used to lead group meditations at her apartment (she’s very psychic but doesn’t practice it professionally). As she led us through the meditation, My “travels” led me to my cat that had died a few years ago, very suddenly of (what we think was) an undiagnosed heart condition. After we came out of our trances, we told each other about our meditation journeys... whereupon, we heard mewing at the door. I opened it and found a very, very tiny kitten standing outside looking up at me. She couldn’t have been more than 8 weeks old. We looked outside, around multiple apartments, and could not find where she came from. One of our group ended up taking her home!

(My cat would jump on visitors as a way of asserting territorial dominance, which kept our company to a very low number.)

In my smallish hometown there was a large abandoned building known as the Soldiers and Sailors Center. It had housed orphans during war times and the rumor was that a disease had swept through at one point and killed nearly all of the children there. Being the curious high school punks that we were we decided to break in one night and check it out. It had long ago been completely abandoned. Not much inside except random pieces of wood that had been used to board it up. That is until we got to the basement. Rows of child-sized single beds. In the corner was a stack of child-sized wooden crutches. I grabbed one and we all ran out. I kept it as a sort of trophy of our bravery for going into this place that everyone in town (or at least in school) seemed to be so freaked out by. Shortly afterward I was in the living room watching TV and saw someone go by in my peripheral vision. I was the only person home at the time. This happened on a regular basis until the day we moved out when I was 18. The funny thing is that I don’t remember being particularly freaked out by it whenever it happened. It just was what it was. Like a person walking by out of the corner of your eye when no one else was around. The crutch is still somewhere at my mothers house. I hadn’t thought about this at all for several years until reading this thread and googled the place. Apparently they finally tore it to the ground several years ago.

About 35 years ago before I moved away from my mid-west home where I lived with my parents and elderly family dog I passed by our antique upright piano in the basement family room and noticed a bunched up steel chain type dog leash on the keyboard. The leash hadn't been used for a few years and we probably wouldn't have known where to find it had we needed to, but to this day nobody knows how it got there, as nobody else was home at the time and is something we would never have done. There were also a few fresh chips in the finish of the dark-stained case as though it had been thrown against the piano. I don't think the mystery will ever be solved but nothing odd happened before or since that incident.

My sister commissioned a local artist in her small town in Minnesota to paint a picture of their family in her 125 year-old farmhouse. he painted all of them in different rooms in a cutaway image of their house with their pets in different rooms. In one room he depicted a smiling young bearded man in overalls, whom he painted in light blue with silver outlines.

My sister asked the painter when she got the painting who the blue man was, and he said it was no one in particular, just an image that for some reason came to him when he was creating the painting. My sister told him that my niece (who was five at the time) had from the age of three (when they first moved into the house) an imaginary friend, named "Seven," whom she told them lived in the house before them. My sister wondered jokingly if it was the imaginary friend the artist had painted. Soon after, my niece stopped talking about the imaginary friend altogether.

Ten years later, my sister is doing research on the house in the town archives and discovers a young man whose first name was "Severn" had died of pneumonia in her farmhouse in the 1920s when his family lived there. My niece says she does not remember at all having an imaginary friend as a child.

Last weekend I was staying at an AirB&B for work. There was a fly buzzing me almost all Saturday afternoon--but wouldn't go out the (screenless) window when I opened it.

I thought of this thread and the poster above who communicated with the fly. I held out my hand and sent him a message to come get in it. He didn't.

However, once I started trying to communicate with it it came very near to me and landed on a Kleenex box--right by my head. I told him to just stay on the Kleenex box and I'd take him out. He didn't move. I took the box over to the window, opened it with my other hand and he still didn't move. Then I held the box outside of the window and he flew right away.

As a teen in junior high, in the 80s, I was sent to group therapy near my home. The day of my first session, I became convinced that a boy in my school across the city, whose name I knew but with whom I had no relationship, would be there. I had exchanged only a few words with him ever, and knew nothing at all about him. But he was, in fact, in the group, despite it being in a neighborhood far from the school we both attended.

Not the weirdest thing that’s ever happened, but r381’s post made me think of it.

One of my daughter’s coaches was a nice, funny guy. Always looked forward to seeing him around. I started having frequent “premonitions” that I’d bump into him in unexpected places, and sure enough I would.

He died very unexpectedly a few weeks ago. It was quite a shock. Now I wonder if his impending death is why he was on my psychic radar for the months before his death. There was no reason for him to be on my mind otherwise. He was a nice enough person, but I didn’t know him well.

R382 here. I should add that I have a history of dreaming about people’s deaths.... shortly before they die. Something about my brain seems to pick up an impending death.

by Anonymousreply 384August 6, 2019 10:21 PM

What's funny, R383, is that I was about to ask you to think about "The 7th Victim" because I love that movie but lost it when my old DVR failed and had to be replaced. It hadn't been available on DVD or streaming. But then, just before posting my request to you, I checked again and found that it's now streaming on Amazon. It seems that your ability works even by proxy, and not just on TCM.

Oh, r192. Your story really touched me. I cried - and I never cry. PLEASE allow yourself another dog. I know Rocky is tops, but I bet Rocky, for all his funny sweet growliness, would want you taken care of and loved as much as you want him to be taken care of and loved wherever he is now.

Reading through all the great stories on here that I read after yours, yours really stuck with me. God bless you, and your Mom, and Rocky. AND, hopefully, your next dog. There's a dog out there who's life will suck without all the love you have to give that dog. PLEASE consider getting another one. You both deserve it.

That's all. God Bless You, r192.

R385, I have never seen than movie and I don’t know if my ability works unless I have, but by all means if you think of another one I’ll give it a try even if I haven’t!

About this time, last year, while sitting in traffic on my dreadful evening commute home, I saw something I still cannot explain. Out of the corner of my left eye I spotted an object approaching the driver side window. It was an orb the size of a baseball, that was luminescent and the color was all colors. It approached me in a floating manner, dipping a bit and then went over my the roof of my car and then vanished! Could this have been ball lightning? Very little information on ball lightning on the interwebs...

R388, It does sound like ball lightning, although it's not a well-understood phenomenon. I don't think anyone disputes that it's real, but there doesn't seem any agreement with what causes it.

R250 here. At the end of my post from July I said that I would check back with the 2nd bizarre occurrence that happened in my life. Seeing the thread bumped, here’s my other unexplainable creepy experience.

In 2012, I bought a log house in the woods of Upper Bucks County.

The day after I took possession of the place, superstorm (don’t you love those weather channel made up monickers?) Sandy slammed right through the property. It was a harrowing night. The logs in these places are stacked, and mostly gravity and smart design hold them together. As Sandy intensified, all the corners of the house where the logs met began to groan. You could feel the air pressure go up and down and match it to the house seemingly sobbing.

OK. Storm over. There was no electricity for 3 weeks, and when it finally came back on we began fixing up the place. There was a simple old chandelier in the dining room. I took it down and put it in an upstairs guest bedroom directly above the DR.

After several weeks I noticed that one of the six bulbs in the chandelier had gone out. When I checked it, it turned out it was loose, and I simply tightened it. As a 2nd home, I was going there every couple of weeks and would regularly check everything around the new place.

The next time I went up 2 bulbs were out. Not blown, but again, loose. I tightened them. With each visit a random number of the bulbs would be out, culminating in a visit where all 6 bulbs had loosened themselves and nothing would light. So I was creeped out. I tightened all of the bulbs and wrapped a small amount of electrical tape between the bulbs and screws.

A week passed and I went back for the weekend. 3 of the bulbs, attached to the screws with electrical tape had loosened and didn’t light.

The next day there was a knock at the front door. It was a woman who was very agitated, and told me that she was the daughter of the original owners of the house. She said she heard there were new owners and wanted to stop by and wish me well. She also for no real reason whatsoever, explained that the building of the house and the years her family spent there were fraught with misfortune and unexplainable disasters. I told her about the terrible storm Sandy, and she blanched. During a storm just after her parents had originally finished the house was, her sister suffered a miscarriage in the dining room. The weather was so bad that she couldn’t get to the hospital until the next day. I thanked her for her weird appearance and she left.

Good news. Thereafter the lights in the chandelier stayed tight and lit. Bad news. The kitchen.

Weirdly, not unlike the lightbulbs in the chandelier, the kitchen had 3 new corkscrew barstools that would ‘screw’ up or down to adjust for height. The following weeks we would hear an unsettling humming when we were in the kitchen. We couldn’t identify it, but it was consistent and then it would just stop.

All 3 barstool seats were slowly unscrewing themselves, just like the lightbulbs. Although happening so slowly and almost imperceptibly, the 3 chairs created an otherworldly hum that would last until the 3 seats had completely lowered - or raised themselves. We sat on the floor for hours, listening to the little whirring noise and seeing the seats moving with a glacial slowness.

Well I see that this has taken entirely too long to explain, and upon rereading seems inconsequential, and probably not the least bit disturbing. But it did freak me out, and there is a corollary to these inanimate spinnings that also took place with firewood and door hinges. And it’s all somehow linked to the original owners unhappy time in the property.

It’s over for now.

r395 thank you I enjoyed the story. The unexplained experiences where physical objects move are always the most unnerving.

One night when I was a little girl my sister and I were spending the night at my grandma's house. I could not go to sleep because I kept hearing a man and woman singing love songs to each other on the roof. My sister apparently did not hear it because she was asleep beside me on the sofa bed. I guess I was tossing and turning because my grandma came in the living room and asked why I was still awake. I told her I could not go to sleep because those people kept singing to each other. She got quiet for a minute to find out what I was talking about but told me she did not hear anything and for me to close my eyes.

I was recently reminded of this happening when I saw this video. Take away the instrumentation and it sounds similar. This type of music was not on my radar at 6 to 7 years of age so I do not think I would have imagined it. Why was I the only one to hear it back then? Now I believe it may have been some sort of place memory. The house was around in the 40s. Maybe I was hearing music that someone had been playing while in the attic years ago.

For those you wondering, the clip at R399 is from the movie [italic] Orchestra Wives [/italic] (1942), starring George Montgomery and Ann Rutherford and featuring the Glenn Miller Orchestra. That's Harry Morgan in the audience. And, yes, that is Cesar Romero at the piano.

R395, Your spirit sounds more impish than malevolent. Perhaps it's the child that was miscarried in the dining room? I can see a child enjoying unscrewing things to play with you.

Next time you're in the house, try setting up some toy blocks in a stack and see if the child spirit moves them into a different pattern. The child is probably lonely for a playmate and just wants to play.

I’ve had scratch marks appear on my body out of nothing. It starts with a sharp burning sensation (usually on my arms or back) and when I look, I see (clusters of) three sharp pinkish scratch marks. The next day they’ve scabbed over and after a few days they have healed.

I've had paranormal experiences on a regular basis since I was four years old. When I was in my teens and still living with my parents, I was home alone one day - my father was at work and my mother had gone out shopping. I was sitting in the living room reading. My chair was near the window, and my back was toward the room. I suddenly felt somebody put their hand firmly on the top of my head. I turned around and of course there was no one there. By this time in my life, I was accustomed to weird things happening, so I said "If there's someone there, give me a sign." The ceiling light fixture turned on immediately.

by Anonymousreply 404October 1, 2019 9:26 AM

It happens every time I look in the mirror. It’s the strangest thing; and I ask myself, where did the time go?

by Anonymousreply 405October 1, 2019 5:54 PM

R404 I had a slightly similar experience when I was a teenager while I was staying at my grandparents' house. My grandmother had died in the house a few years prior to this incident from lung cancer, and my grandfather had lived there alone since. It was a four hour drive to their house from where we lived; I remember leaving on a Friday after my brother and I got out of school, so we got there later in the evening. I was quite tired and recall going to sleep in the downstairs bedroom shortly after arriving. At some point in the middle of the night, I awoke to the feeling of someone touching the top of my head/forehead—it jolted me out of sleep, and I was surprised when I opened my eyes to see that there was nobody there. I spent a few moments in confusion about what had just happened, but ultimately drifted back to sleep. In the morning, I awoke to find my pillow was not on the bed. I sat up and scanned the room, and saw that the pillow was propped up against the closed bedroom door. I had no way to explain this and no memory of placing (or throwing) the pillow there. I knew that both of these things were strange, especially as they had happened concurrently in the same night. I've always believed in the supernatural and chalked it up to my grandmother trying to get my attention. Come to find out, years later, I was told by my dad that that bedroom was the room my grandmother died in. I didn't know that at the time, and had always assumed she died in the room she shared with my grandfather; apparently, they had set up her hospice bed in the downstairs guest bedroom, and that was where she passed.

My brother and I had had another bizarre encounter at that house once before when we were younger: I was maybe 8 at the time, and he and I were playing upstairs in a bedroom. In that bedroom, there was a window that overlooked the back pasture, which was flanked by a creek. While we were playing, I happened to look out the window and saw a woman in a white dress walking barefoot along the creek. The dress was old-fashioned looking, and she was staring forward with a blank expression, as if she were completely lost in thought, almost unaware of her surroundings. It looked innately strange to me. There was a park across the street from my grandparents' house and a trail in the park that ran along this creek, and I could see the woman was heading in that direction. Perplexed, my brother and I ran downstairs to see if we could watch her from the bay window in the living room, and when we got downstairs, she had literally vanished. We went outside to the street and tried to find her, walked into the park—she was nowhere to be seen. These were open spaces all around, and there was nowhere she could have hidden. She disappeared into thin air within maybe 20 seconds of my brother and I walking downstairs. I still cannot explain that either, and I've recounted it with my brother now that we're adults, and he remembers it happening.

I never got the sense that my grandparents' house was haunted per se (aside from the incident I had as a teenager, nothing strange or frightening had ever happened to me inside the house), though it is very old—it's a late-1800s farmhouse, complete with the original skeleton key locks in every door. My father inherited the house and has leased it for many years now, and I've always wondered if the tenants there have ever had anything strange happen.

by Anonymousreply 406October 3, 2019 9:45 AM

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post r406. The house I grew up in is an old, well-kept Edwardian, a large place, with ornate woodwork and an incredible staircase. A good setting for ghosts, in fact. There was a cat who appeared frequently, and I often wonder if he's still there. This cat was a family pet who died suddenly when I was in my teens. Years later, while my parents were still living there, I visited them one day, let myself in the front door, and as I was passing out of the sun porch into the hallway, I saw the cat coming toward me, as solid as if he were still alive, and he was looking directly at my face. After a few steps, he vanished. I took my father aside, and told him what had happened. He told me that he frequently saw the cat upstairs after dark, frisking through the hallway and scampering in an out of the rooms, surrounded by a glow.

Awww what a beautiful kitty story re:407 Sounds like she is much much more than a cat! Thanks for sharing.

by Anonymousreply 408October 3, 2019 6:16 PM

I'm glad you liked the story, r408. The story that I'm about to tell now is the first "appearance" of the cat, although in this story the cat was heard rather than seen. (At least I'm assuming that it was the same cat.) The cat had been dead for about a year. I had just gone to bed, turned off the light and settled down for the night. After a short time I heard the hardwood floor "creak" in the downstairs hallway. I was on the alert immediately because there were no other pets in the house and all humans had gone to bed. Next, I heard a cat's footsteps coming up the stairs. The footsteps reached the top and proceeded down the hallway at a walk. When they reached the end of the hallway, they stopped - outside my room. I wondered if the owner of the footsteps might come in. That would have been an interesting visit, to say the least. However, suddenly the footsteps rushed back down the hallway, and then down the stairs. My father's room was across the hall from mine, and his light came on. I heard him come out of his room, go down the stairs, then finally he came back up. I turned my light on and said, "You heard it too." He replied "Yes, and there's nothing down there. " I often wonder if the present owners have ever heard or seen anything.

as a child i lost both of my parents very young and lived most of my life in 2 unloving and abusive foster homes. i didn't put up much fuss cause i was afraid of what the next home would be like. i was troubled and friendless as well as being a girly boy in the very early 80's. i got beat up and was made fun of constantly. i was suicidal almost all the time from grade 7-11. unrelenting bullying that left me isolated and alone. when i was in grade 7 i had a bad attitude and most of my teachers hated me too. my english teacher once asked a classmate why he wouldn't sit in the chair beside me and he said it was because he didn't want to get aids. the teacher laughed with everyone else. (rock hudson had just died/or went public)

i was a pissed off kid with a chip on his shoulder and bad attitude and very lonely. well after high school we know how it goes you move to the big city and you meet up with your real family. :) my story is this:

my mother was murdered on holy thursday, died early morning on good friday and was buried on easter sunday in the 70's i was almost 2. the week of june 1994 i had what i thought was a bad sore throat but when i went to the doctor i was diagnosed with abscessed tonsillitis and was given antibiotics. that night of june 12 while nicole was being murdered, i had a fever so bad they had to put me in the tub "jacob's ladder style" because i wouldn't have made it to the hospital. it was one of the worst nights of my life, but it was one of the best too because i had my first out of body experience. i went places in what i now know/understand to be the multiverse with a shimmering guide that blew my mind and changed who i was forever. it changed me deep down in my soul. the soul i thought was missing. the next day i was so exhausted and unable to move much so i was couchbound and all over tv was oj simpson in his white bronco all day long. i'm convinced that my mother found a portal to me that night through nicole and saved me and used that brief night to open my eyes my heart and my soul. after this experience and since having many out of body experiences my life has been hopeful and optimistic. when i think about what it did to me i still get goosebumps. there is NO DOUBT in my mind or my soul that this life is just something we have to get through without giving up. we just got to make it until the end. and then we are thinking feeling beings of light with identity and memories. i want to say that when you have an out of body experience you are fully aware of who you are, you are fully aware your body is sleeping, you have full access to memories and thinking ability and you are fully aware you are out of your body and travelling at incredible speeds - none of it is dreamlike in anyway shape or form. you are completely conscious and the hardest part is containing your excitement so you don't pop back in your body and lose it. i wanted to add too that my mom was born in 1944 and i was born in 1973 the year i turned 44 my mother would have turned 73 i can't explain that but i see 44 and 444 everywhere when this started happening i googled 444 meaning and the drop down was like in this photosnip. my mother's name was doreen. it took me awhile to try and post this i fear what comments may come. i tell this only with a true heart and with kindness. just thought i'd share. ps i am a 2 finger typer. sorry.

When i was 18/19 years old, i had a job taking care of a boy with down syndrome. He lived with his older brother and father. They were a nice family. I quit a year or two later to go to college. Fast forward 25 years later. Last summer, i was reminiscing on the past and wondered what ever happened to them so i googled the dads name. I found out the boy i took care of had died a few years earlier. I was sad to hear of it, and promised myself i'd visit his grave site to pay my respects. A week later, i stopped into a deli to grab some lunch to go. (I live in a fairly big city) The boys dad is there standing a few feet from me. I could not believe it. i had not seen him since the day i quit. I walked over to him and introduced myself again. He said he remembered me and i told him i was sorry to hear of his sons passing. A few days later i went to his grave site. and paid my respects.
The daugther of one of my colleagues has the uncanny ability to "read" people and situations, usually for the worst. This doesn't make her life happier.

My dad and several relatives on his side of the family are like that and my late grandfather was like that as well. They have talked about how that ability does make their lives miserable, but it can also be helpful because they know which people not to get close to. For example, one of my cousins married a guy who seemed nice and charming at family events, but a couple of my aunts and my dad knew there was something was off about him and didn't trust him. It eventually came out that he was physically and emotionally abusive and he had been stealing things from my uncle's auto repair shop.

I have a friend who talked about having a similar ability. She works for her state's Medicare office and does evaluations for people who applying for home care services. She has mentioned meeting clients and just knowing that they were going to cause issues later on when it came to home care services and attendants.

I was walking from my office north on 6th street toward market street in SF, to go to a little dive donut shop. It’s a seedy neighborhood, with a bunch of crappy residential hotels along the way. Out of nowhere a partially clothed body fell onto the sidewalk in front of me...it kind of bounced a little, and made a plopping sound, and landed all contorted. If I had been walking faster it would have fallen on me. He had fallen from one of the upper windows in a hotel. The weird thing was the crackheads on the street were all “uuuuh gurl, you know he dead” and just walked around him like it happened every day, which it may have. I got a maple old fashioned.

My company sent its workers home in March because of Covid, but two managers rotated shifts working in the building. The company rented tarps and shrouded all of the furniture, except for their desks. They worked alone.

One manager mentioned they'd both notice tarps had fallen during the night when they arrived, sometimes in ways that made no sense. I visited up there once, the main open central area with all the funereal shrouds was profoundly creepy.

At some point during the spring, the other manager had been working alone in the building for several hours and was walking from the back office to the front lobby, through this main area. She heard something move, like a table leg, and stopped to listen. When she did, she says she felt a firm man's hand grasp her shoulder. She said it wasn't cold, it felt real. She whipped, around- no one there.

When we started trickling back to work, she openly avoided being in that area alone. She'd come find someone to walk with her if she had to pass through there. She's calmed down since, but it took a few weeks.
