It's not such a surprise. The chorus was originally incorporated as Big Apple Performing Arts. Back in the day, there was a legitimate concern about mailing envelopes with the word "GAY" printed on them. Big Apple Performing Arts was the code that kept supporters and audience members in touch with the chorus, while not be outed to the mail delivery person, the building superintendent, or the landlord. The compromise was not universally popular within the membership, but certainly everyone understood the reasoning and it is not irrational.

But that was then. It's long past time to step up to the plate and conform the corporate name to the name of the organization. It's not really a producing and presenting arts management corporation and it never was.

I agree with r13. Other gay choruses have been led by straight people. Just as gay artistic directors can lead a mixed community chorus or college glee club.
