Wasn't Justin Trudeau against pipelines?

Or am I wrong? I thought people hated him for being anti-pipeline and now he just approved one. Can someone in the know give me the breakdown?

by Anonymousreply 43June 20, 2019 9:08 PM

No. When there were those protests in Dakota against the pipelines, I remember very well that Trudeau positioned himself in their favor (of the pipelines). He was hated (at least on the American left) because of this position.

by Anonymousreply 1June 20, 2019 4:26 AM

Thanks, R1. Why is he so hated by Alberta if he's pro pipeline?

by Anonymousreply 2June 20, 2019 5:09 AM

r2 No idea, I'm not Canadian or even North American, lol. I don't know Canadian politics at regional level. But isn't it expected that Alberta would hate him just on account of his remaining positions? Like how the US South dislikes Democratic Presidents no matter how hard they lean to the right.

by Anonymousreply 3June 20, 2019 5:15 AM

He supports the pipeline for the economic benefits it will bring, but he also supports environmental safeguards, which the Conservatives do not.

The Trudeau Government's plan is to invest some of the pipeline profits into new energy.

He also is recruiting some environmentalists to run for the Liberals this year. Eg. it was reported today that Trudeau will be appearing on Friday in Montreal with environmentalist Steven Guilbeault.

by Anonymousreply 4June 20, 2019 5:15 AM

His policies seem sensible and fairly centrist. The "hatred" is probably coming from extremists.

by Anonymousreply 5June 20, 2019 5:44 AM

I'm from Vancouver. This is going to get ugly for him.

by Anonymousreply 6June 20, 2019 5:50 AM

Everything is ugly got him.

by Anonymousreply 7June 20, 2019 6:02 AM

Could you translate that please, R7?

by Anonymousreply 8June 20, 2019 6:11 AM

He's meeting with Trump today.

So jet planes are going to fly on solar energy.

by Anonymousreply 10June 20, 2019 5:15 PM

Nope. He never campaigned on being opposed to pipelines in general.

by Anonymousreply 11June 20, 2019 6:04 PM

R2: Alberta hates him cause he has Liberal after his name. Not to mention that name is Trudeau and they're still butthurt about his father from back in the 70s and early 80s. Albertans, in short, are vindictive. There's your answer.

by Anonymousreply 12June 20, 2019 6:12 PM

True, R12.

Trudeau has actually reached out more to Alberta & Western Canada than any Prime Minister in decades, and yet they've still treated him badly.

by Anonymousreply 13June 20, 2019 6:14 PM

[quote]Alberta hates him cause he has Liberal after his name.

Sad to say, that'll do it. People have often said of Alberta that you could run a donkey and everyone would vote for it as long as it's a Conservative donkey. And then, in 1997, Deepak Obhrai (a donkey if there ever was one) was elected as MP and has remained ever since.

In 22 years, Obhrai has done nothing of any value. In fact, in the 2011 election, he attracted national media attention for his ineffectiveness as an MP, his complete lack of accountability, his refusal to attend debates, and his dismissive comments about his Liberal opponent, e.g., "She can debate her Liberal friends from Toronto." Despite all that, he still got 73 percent of the votes in his riding.

by Anonymousreply 14June 20, 2019 7:17 PM

Yeah, it must be tough living in a Conservative stronghold, R14.

Too bad you're not in one of the Edmonton or Calgary ridings that sometimes go Liberal or NDP.

Btw, Conservative MP Mark Warawa died today. He was a social conservative, but it's too bad he got cancer.

by Anonymousreply 15June 20, 2019 8:04 PM

He spoke a bit this morning during a press call with Trump. Good, God! I never realized how gay he comes across. Is this guy really straight???

by Anonymousreply 16June 20, 2019 8:08 PM

R16, there have been gay rumors in the past about Trudeau and we used to have threads on them here.

But there have never been any receipts, and he's ended up having a bunch of kids with his wife and rumored affairs with other women.

So who knows?

by Anonymousreply 17June 20, 2019 8:17 PM

R16: Here ya go.

Thanks, R17 and R18. You know, former governor Jim Mc Greevey had two wives (not at the same time, of course. We wouldn't want him to blow a gay circuit) and he has fathered two children without the assistance of a turkey baster. How heterosexual of him.

by Anonymousreply 23June 20, 2019 8:28 PM

They certainly were, r20.

by Anonymousreply 24June 20, 2019 8:31 PM

Yes, R20, it's too bad that Obama isn't in the White House anymore.

Those were happier times, and he and Trudeau had a hot bromance.

by Anonymousreply 25June 20, 2019 8:34 PM

Does anyone have the gif of a young Justin walking around in those short-shorts?
