Do you like your first name?

My first name is Justin and I thank my mother at least once per year for giving me a name that I LOVE.

by Anonymousreply 139February 22, 2020 4:35 AM

I hate mine, but I'm not telling you what it is.

by Anonymousreply 1May 29, 2019 4:50 PM

what's your last name? Timberlake? Bieber?

by Anonymousreply 2May 29, 2019 4:51 PM

I love mine too

Farquhar...

Farquhar P. Parkinfarquer.

by Anonymousreply 3May 29, 2019 4:53 PM

Hate mine. Was the source of constant harassment growing up.

by Anonymousreply 4May 29, 2019 4:57 PM

Taylor and I love it.Very different.

by Anonymousreply 5May 29, 2019 4:58 PM

I hate my name and I hate my parents for giving me the name. It was embarrassing growing up.

by Anonymousreply 6May 29, 2019 4:59 PM

R6, is it Howard?

by Anonymousreply 7May 29, 2019 5:00 PM

I'm a Junior, so I like it because it's my dad's name, but it doesn't fit me very well.

by Anonymousreply 8May 29, 2019 5:01 PM

My name is Nick (Nicholas) and couldn't be happier.

by Anonymousreply 9May 29, 2019 5:02 PM

I don’t care for mine, but others tell me they like it. When my parents die, I’ll drop it and go by my middle name.

by Anonymousreply 10May 29, 2019 5:02 PM

Isaac and no I don't like it. I want to have it legally changed but I'm not sure to what.

by Anonymousreply 11May 29, 2019 5:04 PM

My name is Abu. I’m so so on it.

by Anonymousreply 12May 29, 2019 5:04 PM

No. It's the same as my father's, and he only became more loathsome the older he got. So I changed it when I started sending out resumes.

by Anonymousreply 13May 29, 2019 5:10 PM

I love mine. It is the name of a saint - which I am not, by any stretch.

by Anonymousreply 14May 29, 2019 5:15 PM

Hate my name. It's a girl's name too. I got lots of shit for that growing up gay.

by Anonymousreply 15May 29, 2019 5:17 PM

Sue R15?

by Anonymousreply 16May 29, 2019 5:18 PM

A Boy Named Sue was one of the most fun songs Johnny Cash ever did. The lyrics are funny/stupid.

Jonathan. I dig it. I would hate it if it were John.

by Anonymousreply 18May 29, 2019 5:19 PM

Mark. It suits me, strong yet simple, I guess. My parents picked it because they wanted us to all have names without nicknames. Yet I am referred to as Marko, MarkyMark, Markman, Marcus Aurelius, MarcoPolo, Marcus, etc.

by Anonymousreply 19May 29, 2019 5:34 PM

no, I DON'T. BUT IT WAS COMMON FOR THAT DECADE. one of the meanings for it is pure which i am far from.....

i would changed it to Unhinged.

by Anonymousreply 20May 29, 2019 5:35 PM

I too was named Mark. I've always complained that when people say it more than once, it sounds like a hair lipped dog.

by Anonymousreply 21May 29, 2019 5:54 PM

I like mine. I get compliments on it, because I use non-English pronunciation (that's how my parents meant it).

by Anonymousreply 22May 29, 2019 6:00 PM

Harris wouldn't be my first choice, but I'm over it

by Anonymousreply 23May 29, 2019 6:02 PM

Just in where ?

by Anonymousreply 24May 29, 2019 6:02 PM

Algernon

by Anonymousreply 25May 29, 2019 6:03 PM

Mohamed

by Anonymousreply 26May 29, 2019 6:05 PM

I like the name Harris.

by Anonymousreply 27May 29, 2019 6:25 PM

Harris Harris

by Anonymousreply 28May 29, 2019 6:27 PM

Why are some ppl not typing their names? Dont worry..we wont know who you are.

by Anonymousreply 29May 29, 2019 6:27 PM

Pretty sure R15 is Jody.

by Anonymousreply 30May 29, 2019 6:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 31May 29, 2019 6:30 PM

Algernon, were you a David?

by Anonymousreply 32May 29, 2019 6:32 PM

R32 huh ?

by Anonymousreply 33May 29, 2019 6:35 PM

It's a long shot but I met an Algernon and his name was originally David. Changed it.

by Anonymousreply 34May 29, 2019 6:37 PM

R34 Smart guy

by Anonymousreply 35May 29, 2019 6:39 PM

Has one ever run into a normal Vincent? That name is the kiss of death.

by Anonymousreply 36May 29, 2019 6:44 PM

I was also named after a saint, the patron saint of mothers, by my almost became a nun of a mother. It's not a common name, but still not SO unique. It's suits my not being one of the sheeple personality.

by Anonymousreply 37May 29, 2019 6:53 PM

I've known a few Vincents ("never Vinny").

I love my first name. It's an unexpected full name to the nickname I go by. As if a Harry turns out to be Harris instead of Harold.

by Anonymousreply 38May 29, 2019 6:54 PM

R3, is the middle P for Parkin?

by Anonymousreply 39May 29, 2019 6:59 PM

Pussy...Pussy Galore.

by Anonymousreply 40May 29, 2019 7:01 PM

I did like my first and middle names until a certain new "celebrity" made the names famous, James Charles :(

by Anonymousreply 41May 29, 2019 7:02 PM

There was another thread were a commenter accused OP of trying to find out people identify by doing multiple posts and asking seemingly innacuous questions that allowed him to slowly decipher who was whom in real life. To what end, I'm not sure. Now I'm paranoid and don't want to give out too much info on this site. Is this post the same thing? Also, my name is dope. Funny though, its not super common but every other guy I meet with my name is also gay. Idk if it's a coincidence or what.

by Anonymousreply 42May 29, 2019 7:03 PM

R42 Ssssssebasssssstian?

Julian?

Bruce?

by Anonymousreply 44May 29, 2019 7:07 PM

Rex here. When I was a kid everyone had a dog named Rex, so when we moved across town when I was in junior high school I became Rick. Sounds like Rex but isn't. When I hit my early 30s, the dog-Rex craze had all but disappeared, so I became Rex once again. It's actually a great name--you never have to spell it, everyone understands it immediately, and when they call your name in a restaurant, you're the only Rex around. I'm very happy with my name. I still answer to Rick from my friends who I knew in school.

by Anonymousreply 45May 29, 2019 7:07 PM

R43 R44 No and No. I have always liked the name sebastian though. My name has become more common than Toma stupid movies franchise, but It's not everyday I meet guys with my name.

by Anonymousreply 47May 29, 2019 7:11 PM

When I was named Leo, after a relative, it was out of vogue so I was the only one I knew. Never cared for it, especially since I had an ethnic-sounding surname. Then it became popular and I had people telling me, "Wow, what a cool name!" So I grew to like it more.

by Anonymousreply 48May 29, 2019 7:11 PM

Leroy

by Anonymousreply 49May 29, 2019 7:12 PM

I LOVE my name. It's actually the only name I like. I guess, I'm grateful to my abusive deadbeat dad for picking it for me.

by Anonymousreply 50May 29, 2019 7:18 PM

My brother and sister have uncommon names - fortunately my dad named me. Not uncommon but I also don't run into other people with my name often .

by Anonymousreply 51May 29, 2019 7:20 PM

I hated my name as a kid. I love it now as it’s not unusual, but not all that common. I especially appreciated it after hearing what my mother first wanted to name me before my dad stepped in and said, “No.” Also, one of the best dark comedies of the late 80’s has a plural form of my name. Pretty satisfying.

by Anonymousreply 52May 29, 2019 7:28 PM

Always hated my name. Named after my grandfather and it's also the name of a saint. Wish I had changed it to Matthew in Jr high. I also like the French, Italian, and German forms of that name. Now much too old.

by Anonymousreply 53May 29, 2019 7:31 PM

I was named after a Catholic saint that was killed by her father. When I was adopted my mom changed my name. I hate it and don't feel it fits me. I plan on changing my name to my birth last name, which would make for a very uncommon first name. It is related to Indian names which mean 'new,' which would be fitting.

by Anonymousreply 54May 29, 2019 8:38 PM

Hate to break it to ya OP, but your name SUCKS.

by Anonymousreply 55May 29, 2019 8:40 PM

R55 Thanks

by Anonymousreply 56May 29, 2019 8:47 PM

It's nice enough, pretty inoffensive, but I like it in conjunction with my middle and last names.

by Anonymousreply 57May 29, 2019 8:59 PM

I vote Lance for r42

by Anonymousreply 58May 29, 2019 9:01 PM

Hated it so much I eventually changed it, even though I hated it, took a long time to think of myself with the new name instead of the old name. Some relatives accepted it, some didn't and refused or just couldn't get use to calling me by the new name. They are either all dead or out of my life now.

by Anonymousreply 59May 29, 2019 9:06 PM

When people say it in its entirety and don't shorten it, yes.

by Anonymousreply 60May 29, 2019 9:08 PM

My full name sounds like a minor character in Downton Abbey, as I am a third. I am not thrilled with the fact that I share my first name with the worst President of all time.

by Anonymousreply 61May 29, 2019 9:11 PM

I was at school with 3 Deborahs who all hated their name.

by Anonymousreply 62May 29, 2019 9:13 PM

No!!

by Anonymousreply 63May 29, 2019 9:14 PM

I used to work with a man named Kim. He was an asshole

What's the deal with Kim as a man's name? I always thought it was a girl's name. Why would people name their son Kim?

by Anonymousreply 64May 29, 2019 9:16 PM

R58 nope. But keep guessing, I want to see if anyone gets it

by Anonymousreply 65May 29, 2019 9:21 PM

I never really knew my father. He left my mom when I was 3 yrs old. I had a long Italian last name. No one could ever pronounce it and I always had to spell it for everyone. I hated it. When I turned 20, I went down to the courthouse and changed my last name to Hunter. That was 30 years ago and it was the BEST decision I ever made.

My job requires me to call about 35 insurance companies a day. I have to tell them my full name. And my last name is an automatic I.Q detector. If they have to ask me how to spell Hunter (there's only one way to spell it), I know that they are borderline retarded. I tell them we have a bad connection and call back so I can get someone who isn't borderline retarded

by Anonymousreply 66May 29, 2019 9:28 PM

I worked with a guy named Kim, too. But he was a stud and a nice guy, so it always seemed like a sexy name for a guy.

by Anonymousreply 67May 29, 2019 9:29 PM

Love it!

by Anonymousreply 68May 29, 2019 9:36 PM

r66 Carlo Cacciatore

by Anonymousreply 69May 29, 2019 9:37 PM

r66, I hope your first name isn't Richard

by Anonymousreply 70May 29, 2019 9:39 PM

I hate mine (Oscar) that's why I'm changing it to Tati Westbrook.

by Anonymousreply 71May 29, 2019 9:40 PM

I hate mine and will be changing it within a few years.

by Anonymousreply 72May 29, 2019 9:41 PM

I loathe mine.

by Anonymousreply 73May 29, 2019 9:42 PM

Used to but now I am okay with it.

by Anonymousreply 74May 29, 2019 9:47 PM

R67 Thank you

by Anonymousreply 75May 29, 2019 9:51 PM

Adolf.. I like it.

by Anonymousreply 76May 29, 2019 9:55 PM

If my mother had named me Justin, I would have liked it. But no one in my generation was named Justin, except for one guy a year younger than me. And it turned out his real name was Jerome.

by Anonymousreply 77May 29, 2019 9:56 PM

I love it so much I jerk off to people saying my name.

by Anonymousreply 78May 29, 2019 10:04 PM

Sorry OP. Every Justin I've ever known was a total cunt.

by Anonymousreply 79May 29, 2019 10:16 PM

I hate my first name. Everyone addresses me by my last name, Morse.

by Anonymousreply 80May 29, 2019 10:17 PM

i hate my name as i gained it through my parents apathy. 1st, my father wanted to give me an original name, but his family members didn't like it, so it was nixed (he never stood up for me where my bully family members were concerned) i ended up being named after both grandmothers. the diminutive version of my name makes me wince. so i have changed it to a new nickname which creates a lot of awkwardness. people who don't respect that sort of thing suck. to make matters worse, i know my mother named me after her mother to gain favor with her mother, which she never could as my grandmother knew what a horrible bitch my mother was. once my grandmother died, my mother ran away from my father & i. she remarried one of the worst people in the world. they couldn't conceive which was god's greatest gift to the would be child but if they did she would have given that child the name she really wanted to give me. which was better. her sister had a child & gave it that name which really pissed her off.

by Anonymousreply 81May 29, 2019 10:17 PM

I received a somewhat posh name at birth: Philip I wonder how my parents knew I was to be their lovely gay son. Though I introduce myself as Philip, people often call me Phil. (Not acceptable.) Do I like my first name? I suppose I do, but when I'm having a wild time in bed with another man, it would be sexier if my name was Dirk or Ramon.

by Anonymousreply 82May 29, 2019 10:18 PM

Mine is Deaglan.

by Anonymousreply 83May 29, 2019 10:35 PM

Hate my middle name.

by Anonymousreply 84May 29, 2019 10:36 PM

I detest my first name, and I can't go by my middle name because it is even more objectionable. My parents screwed with the spelling of my first name, so I am forever spelling it for people or quietly dying a little inside when I see it misspelled in emails and correspondence. My last name was an unpronounceable and unspellable Swiss name. I was forced to resurrect these terrible names when the RealID law took effect, and now I have four names, three of which I profoundly dislike. To add insult to injury, now I have to incorporate these names into my signature.

I took a look at my birth certificate, and it took my parents a month to concoct the detestable brew that they saddled me with forever. Try again, Mom and Dad, and this time lay off the intoxicants you were obviously using heavily during that fateful month!

by Anonymousreply 85May 29, 2019 10:37 PM

Deaglan is a great name, R83. Is it Irish? Scottish? Hope my questions and obvious ignorance don't offend.

by Anonymousreply 86May 29, 2019 10:41 PM

Eoghan

by Anonymousreply 87May 29, 2019 10:42 PM

r87 — I read that as Eggnog.

by Anonymousreply 88May 29, 2019 10:43 PM

I was named William, but my parents immediately started calling me by a ridiculous nickname that has nothing to do with it. I suffered through high school with everyone calling me the nickname, but then when I went away to college, I started using my real name, or Will. Now, decades later, no one calls me by the nickname except my mother, who even knowing how much I dislike it, continues to use it. She says she "forgets," but I know better. Some day, I'll "forget" to visit her in the nursing home.

by Anonymousreply 89May 29, 2019 10:48 PM

Deaglan is Irish. My last name is so old Irish I've only had one person in the US pronounce it right on the first try. She's from Ireland. It's nine letters with only three vowels.

by Anonymousreply 90May 29, 2019 10:48 PM

I like my name - Doug.

A normal, non-weird name, but not very common

by Anonymousreply 91May 29, 2019 10:54 PM

Two maggots were fighting in dead Ernest.

Just thought I'd throw that out there, because Ernest is a pretty feeble name.

by Anonymousreply 92May 29, 2019 11:03 PM

My name is Paul which seems common enough but I’ve never had anyone else in my year during school that also had that name. Also, I dunno if it’s the way I speak, when ever I’m on the phone and have to say my name the caller always asks me to repeat myself or spell it out.

by Anonymousreply 93May 29, 2019 11:21 PM

One of my good friends has an Indian/Hindu sounding name because his parents converted to Hare Krishna before he was born. As a white boy growing up in a small semi rural town, He hated it. So he went by the nick name Rummy. It’s a name I fucking adore. But in the last couple of years he adopted a new nick name, Rami. They sound kinda similar but I’ll forever love the name Rummy.

by Anonymousreply 94May 29, 2019 11:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 95May 29, 2019 11:27 PM

I like Harris, R23.

by Anonymousreply 96May 29, 2019 11:28 PM

I lost my virginity to Jesus

by Anonymousreply 97May 29, 2019 11:32 PM

I love my name. It goes back many generations in my father's family.

by Anonymousreply 98May 29, 2019 11:34 PM

No. I use my middle name. My first name is popular with European nobility. It's Germanic and sounds like the name for a guy with a stick up his ass.

by Anonymousreply 99May 29, 2019 11:37 PM

I was teased constantly about my first name. But what do you expect when you first name rhymes with a female body part.

by Anonymousreply 100May 29, 2019 11:40 PM

For career reasons I changed my name to Dash Riprock.

by Anonymousreply 101May 29, 2019 11:41 PM

My name is of German origin but was the name of kings in England. Never went by a nick name, only the full pronunciation. I don't come across as a nickname kinda guy. I had 5 guys in my HS graduating class ( a prestigious private school in the south) with this same name and I was the only one that went by the full pronunciation...….Richard.

by Anonymousreply 102May 29, 2019 11:51 PM

[quote] Also, one of the best dark comedies of the late 80’s has a plural form of my name. Pretty satisfying.

Heathers?

My first and last names are both extremely common, which I sort of hated as a kid, but now I love it, because it makes me practically un-google-able.

Hate the name Justin; sorry, OP.

by Anonymousreply 104May 30, 2019 1:32 AM

The same name as Kings of England. OMG!!!!

ooh!!! a prestigious high school . . . . in the south

We're all very, very, very impressed, Dick

by Anonymousreply 110May 30, 2019 3:23 AM

Marc with a “c.” It’s pronounced Mar-see.

by Anonymousreply 111May 30, 2019 3:26 AM

My name is Thomas and I like it; was also my father, grandfather and great-grandfather's name. Interestingly, my parents passed over giving the name to my older brother...which was risky if they wanted to guarantee the continuation of the family tradition. It would have ended either way; my brother only had one daughter and I'm gay, single and don't have children.

by Anonymousreply 112May 30, 2019 3:32 AM

My name is Troy but it's pronounced "ShaSha".

by Anonymousreply 113May 30, 2019 3:47 AM

My name is Amy, which was common when I was growing up but doesn’t seem to be anything people name their kids now. I love it because it means “friend” and I’m both very friendly AND a Quaker! So it is like one of those names given to a character in a book that describes them. :)

by Anonymousreply 114May 30, 2019 3:53 AM

Mitchell. Go by Mitchy tho.

by Anonymousreply 115May 30, 2019 11:26 PM

R42, is it Trevor?

by Anonymousreply 116May 31, 2019 9:07 PM

I would have also liked to have been named Christopher. I kind of like my middle name but it was my father's Americanized name(he grew up in Italy) and I hated him so no.

by Anonymousreply 117May 31, 2019 9:20 PM

My mother wanted to name me Meredith. My father felt that would be a good way to get beaten up. My father came up with my name, which is Michael. I've always liked my name. Thank goodness my father overruled my mother when I was born.

by Anonymousreply 118May 31, 2019 9:28 PM

I like my name, although the problem is that there is only one letter difference with my last name.

by Anonymousreply 119May 31, 2019 9:28 PM

Yeah, I like my name, and I spell it the correct way: Stephen

by Anonymousreply 120May 31, 2019 9:39 PM

I knew a Jenny in grade school whose real full name was Iphigenia.

She hated when the teachers would say it, because the boys would always tease her.

"If-a-any-of-ya are going to the store, pick me up my smokes!"

Kids, they're silly.

by Anonymousreply 121May 31, 2019 9:53 PM

No, it's Walter. It doesn't get much worse.

by Anonymousreply 122May 31, 2019 10:20 PM

[quote][R42], is it Trevor?

It's Rumpleforeskin.

by Anonymousreply 123May 31, 2019 11:57 PM

lololololool[R110] !... This is Dick at [R102] But I don't think you've seen me naked, however I accept the compliment!

by Anonymousreply 124June 2, 2019 12:40 AM

I’m thinking about changing mine legally. I’m slowly coming out to family & work, just out of College, been using a ‘lesbian’ andro name for several years now and it seems to have stuck. I always hated my given first name, which is a fat straight milkmaid name to give you a visual. I also want to start a new artistic venture with which a new name would align better.

The only thing stopping me going down to the bureau and doing it now is that I live in the U.K. so obviously it’s going to be a huge pain in the arse and a lot of paperwork plus potentially a silly move politically (what with Breggsit). Emotionally I think I need to do it but the red tape is putting me off.

I wish it was as easy as it seemed to be in the ‘70s/‘80s. Just walk into an office and ask them for a new ID a la Nikki Sixx.

I don't hate it but I prefer to use my middle name when making appointments/bookings. I just can't be bothered to spell it out or listening to others fuck it up.

by Anonymousreply 126June 19, 2019 10:17 AM

r114, my sister is named Amy and you're right, I think it's a very generational name from the 60s. She was going to get my name if she was a boy. I was going to be called Lenore if I was a girl. Luckily no more kids after me so no little girl got saddled with an old lady name.

by Anonymousreply 127June 19, 2019 7:42 PM

Mine is Harold which was my uncle’s name. As a kid I was teased because of it and didn’t like it. Now I am rather proud of it as it has historic origins and is the name of numerous kings and English prime ministers. Always laugh when people spell it Herald like “hark the herald angels sing” !

by Anonymousreply 128June 19, 2019 8:03 PM

I didn't like it growing up because it wasn't popular in the 1970s or 1980s, there was only one famous actor (from the 1930s / 1940s) with my name.

Then a popular novel and a tv show adaptation of the novel, an author, a basketball player and a royal made my first name popular. So now I like it and people compliment me on it.

by Anonymousreply 129February 22, 2020 1:22 AM

My name is Jeff. I've never met a Jeff that wasn't a complete asshole, myself included.

by Anonymousreply 130February 22, 2020 1:24 AM

Female introvert here, born in the '60's. Hated my name and always told my friends not to call me that. Not sure what name I'd choose instead though.

My name is Michael, and yes I like it.

I had a friend in college named Michael, who told me that all Michaels are gay, and it seems to be generally true.

My name is not too common, but not rare. I never was teased for it growing up and I don't recall ever wishing it was something else. Never really thought about it to be honest. But last few years I really like the way some people pronounce it.

Once I actually had a guy with the same name as I crushing on me but it just seemed weird to me to date a guy with my name.

Robert. It's pretty common, it ain't special, but I like it a lot. It's what I am. Robert. I don't have an issue with it.

I like mine. It

1. Is normal

2. Translates into most European languages

3. Abbreviates easily

4. Is common, but not annoyingly common where there were 4 or 5 in every class.

Hated my first name growing up. When I got older and started traveling, everyone in other countries mispronounced it. Started using another name, religious name I’d been given at birth (though I’m not at all religious). Made the name change legal soon after. That was over thirty years ago. Never regretted it.
