Let's discuss My Dinner with Andre

Inspired by the "most boring movies" thread.

It seems there is a lot of hatred for this movie on the DL, with charges of "pretentious" and "boring."

And yet Siskel and Ebert loved it; Ebert, I believe, put it on his "Best Films of the 1980s" list.

What's your opinion of this film?

Anyone else care to weigh in?

Delicious

I remember loving this movie at the time but I can't remember anything they spoke about now.

by Anonymousreply 4May 13, 2019 2:19 PM

I remember thinking we had more interesting conversations st my table in the high school cafeteria.

by Anonymousreply 5May 13, 2019 2:59 PM

It was no Breakfast With Blassie…..

by Anonymousreply 6May 13, 2019 3:02 PM

What did Andre order OP?

by Anonymousreply 7May 13, 2019 3:02 PM

Don't know about MY DINNER WITH ANDRE, but I loved VANYA, 42ND STREET. And Andre Gregory is prettier than, say, Harry Dean Stanton.

by Anonymousreply 8May 13, 2019 3:21 PM

Which reminds me, I should watch this movie.

by Anonymousreply 9May 13, 2019 3:22 PM

I tried to watch it a long time ago, but couldn't get into it at all. Shut it off after about 15 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 10May 13, 2019 3:42 PM

I like the part where Andre chokes on a chicken bone and vomits all over his dining companion.

by Anonymousreply 11May 13, 2019 3:47 PM

Hilarious

I was just thinking of the My Dinner with Andre action figures; and the Remains of the Day lunchboxes.

by Anonymousreply 13May 13, 2019 4:30 PM

I want them both, r13. Will pay top dollar.

by Anonymousreply 14May 13, 2019 4:33 PM

It is a French movie after all.

Possibly the dullest movie ever made.

Critics liked it because they thought, gee, if people find this dull crap interesting, they'd find me interesting too. I might have a career!

by Anonymousreply 17May 13, 2019 4:57 PM

I believe Oona White choreographed the film.

by Anonymousreply 18May 13, 2019 7:40 PM

It is actually a pretty enjoyable film. Part of the fun is that you think that a film of two people at dinner would be impossible to make interesting. But it really is enjoyable. Shawn says very little for the first 40 minutes, but gets the biggest laughs with his looks of incomprehension.

by Anonymousreply 19May 13, 2019 7:48 PM

I like your take r19

by Anonymousreply 20May 13, 2019 7:50 PM

I stumbled onto it by accident on day when I was home sick and frankly, by the end I ended up really liking it and it's weirdness.

Can't remember a word of what they talked about, but that's Nyquil for you.

by Anonymousreply 21May 13, 2019 7:52 PM

I remember I really liked it, but don't remember the conversation. It was really an interesting and different movie.

by Anonymousreply 22May 13, 2019 8:11 PM

I've been curious for years (especially since 'Waiting For Guffman's call out), but haven't ever watched it. One can't go wrong with Wallace Shawn, though.

by Anonymousreply 23May 13, 2019 8:17 PM

I think Andre's constant stream of bullshit is hilarious, and I love Wally's reaction to it.

A great movie.

by Anonymousreply 24May 13, 2019 8:36 PM

The Criterion extras say that the stories were based on real experiences of Andre Gregory, but embellished by Wallace Shawn to heighten their absurdity.
