Let's discuss My Dinner with Andre
Inspired by the "most boring movies" thread.
It seems there is a lot of hatred for this movie on the DL, with charges of "pretentious" and "boring."
And yet Siskel and Ebert loved it; Ebert, I believe, put it on his "Best Films of the 1980s" list.
What's your opinion of this film?

Don't know about MY DINNER WITH ANDRE, but I loved VANYA, 42ND STREET. And Andre Gregory is prettier than, say, Harry Dean Stanton.

Which reminds me, I should watch this movie.

I tried to watch it a long time ago, but couldn't get into it at all. Shut it off after about 15 minutes.

I like the part where Andre chokes on a chicken bone and vomits all over his dining companion.

I was just thinking of the My Dinner with Andre action figures; and the Remains of the Day lunchboxes.

Possibly the dullest movie ever made.
Critics liked it because they thought, gee, if people find this dull crap interesting, they'd find me interesting too. I might have a career!

I believe Oona White choreographed the film.

It is actually a pretty enjoyable film. Part of the fun is that you think that a film of two people at dinner would be impossible to make interesting. But it really is enjoyable. Shawn says very little for the first 40 minutes, but gets the biggest laughs with his looks of incomprehension.

I stumbled onto it by accident on day when I was home sick and frankly, by the end I ended up really liking it and it's weirdness.
Can't remember a word of what they talked about, but that's Nyquil for you.

I remember I really liked it, but don't remember the conversation. It was really an interesting and different movie.

I've been curious for years (especially since 'Waiting For Guffman's call out), but haven't ever watched it. One can't go wrong with Wallace Shawn, though.

I think Andre's constant stream of bullshit is hilarious, and I love Wally's reaction to it.
A great movie.

The Criterion extras say that the stories were based on real experiences of Andre Gregory, but embellished by Wallace Shawn to heighten their absurdity.
