OP -- I don't listen much to pop and rock music. I have certainly heard of Weezer, but don't think I had ever heard them. I listened the song you posted, though, and it's brilliant! I ended up downloading the album that it is from. The funny thing is, it is a fairly recent song -- 2017 -- and they have been around for a long time, and one almost expects newer songs from heritage bands as being lame. Thanks for posting.

Nearly everything Linda Ronstadt ever recorded, starting with the Don't Cry Now album.

I like the OP song, too, but the SQ is awful.

I heard Arthur Russell for the first time in a restaurant last week, and thought he was wonderful. This song turns out to have been recorded between 1973 and 1992, when Arthur died. It's so good. Please listen.

This song was on constant replay in my office. It took me a while to figure out what it was.

Hmmm...my iTunes has not shuffled its way to Meyer Hawthorne in a long time. Thanks, r16.

Young The Giant sang "My Body" on a Grammy's as a new artist and they didn't get attention, but I really like this song. Wait for the chorus.

OMG, this song was popular in Europe in summer 2010 when I was there, but no one in America knows it.

"I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" was a country song by Hank Williams and LeAnn sang it at an award show when she was 14 looking 28.

R24. I fucking love Maria. Never got the play her other hits did. But it was the best.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 16, 2019 3:17 AM |
Thank you R11. Arthur Russell was a genius. He was a sweet, but tortured soul.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 16, 2019 3:19 AM |
Oh and R24. That video was filmed in the old offices of Spy magazine on Union Square. Debbie was friends w Graydon Carter and he let her use their offices at night.

Does anyone know if Sharivari by A Number of Names was a hit or not?. I like it.

I love everything Traveling Wilburys related but the Wilbury Twist never got all the love it deserved.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 16, 2019 3:45 AM |
I believe the Wilburys backed up Robin Zander on this standout track from his 1993 solo album.

Tell us more, r27. I never heard of Arthur Russell before last week.

r39 not the above poster, but here's his Wiki. He looks a bit like Patrick Swayze in that pic.

Heartbeat by Enrique Iglesias and Nicole Scherzinger should have been a hit.

OP -- Thanks again for posting Happy Hour. I freaking love that song, and have listened to the album it's from every day. I had not heard Weezer before, so I'm happy for the new discovery.

Mariah's Rarities CD has song good songs that didn't make albums. This one starts slow but then totally changes and is really cool and fun.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | March 11, 2021 6:51 PM |
This one is from 93 and she sounds like she had a cold while recording this demo, but it's cool.

R26 Blondie is a group and the album that song came from, No Exit, is one of their best.
Maria was written by keyboard player Jimmy Destri, who wrote Atomic and 11:59, among others.
What makes Blondie great, aside from the coolest singer and Clem Burke’s drumming is that they had three excellent songwriters, Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Jimmy Destri.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | March 11, 2021 7:56 PM |
Never released as a single but my favorite No Exit track and one of my favorites my Destri.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 11, 2021 7:57 PM |
This should have been a hit. From The Hunter and my other favorite Destri song.

Oingo Boingo's "We Close Our Eyes"
As I recall it got some traction a few years later after a Susanna Hoff's cover version of it was used in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer film.

R22-the lead singer has an uncanny resemblance to Julie Andrews!

Midnight Sun by Kate Boy (2015)
NOT the type of group to have a "Hit song" but it has been on a constant loop in my head. The ENITRE album SLAPS.

Before DataLounge, I used to spend most of my free time in the Weezer forums (1999-2002). I was obsessed with them and owned all their albums until Maladroit was released...then they started sucking.
I initially scrolled past this thread, but doubled-back out of a sense of loyalty. The song isn't bad at all...still it's not as good as their earlier work.

Great thread! I especially enjoyed Oingo Boingo clip - I went to see them at The Ritz here in NYC in the 80s & Danny Elfman is an amazing composer & singer. I discovered the Diane Warren - Belinda song "World without You" just last year having never bought the album it was on, I did buy Belinda's first solo lp, however. And I had the cassette single of the Brent Bourgeois song- was he a part of Bourgeois Tagg? Thanks to all posters!

"Ghosts" by Ladytron ... really cool song, especially for night-driving.
I hear it gets most recognized from being used the Little Big Planet video game.

Explorers Club - Do You Love Me
I discovered this song as the closing theme of the TV show Bored to Death.
Explorers Club was a really good band that never caught on.

R89 I hate that brushed forward hair style on men. Why do they do it? Ed Sheerhan is the worst offender.

"Nothing Has Been Proved" by Dusty Springfield and the Pet Shop Boys - played endlessly on the radio in London in 1989, don't know if it was ever a hit in the US. It always takes me right back to those days in that amazing city.

Pendulous Skin by Mastodon. Way different from the rest of their work, love the guitar on this.

I think R.E.M's "Crush with Eyeliner" was really cool. While released as a single, it pretty much stalled on the charts. The only place it was really a hit was in Iceland. In any event, the video with the Japanese tweens taking the place as the band is fun.

r18 No Myth by Michael Penn got tons of airplay on radio, MTV and VH1. No idea why it never made the billboard top 10 but it did make it to #13....Again the video was played constantly and spent months on the music video countdown charts.
He's Sean Penn's bro.

"Los Angeles" by Sugarcult was released as single, yet didn't chart.
Some talented youtuber has used it as the background music for a night landing flying into LAX.
Cool song, cool video.
