Rooting for villains

Did you ever root for villains on TV or in movies?

As a kid, I hated the Roadrunner. I always wanted Wile E. Coyote to get him.

by Anonymousreply 233June 20, 2019 1:05 AM

My little brother always wanted Dick Dastardly to win a Wacky Race.

by Anonymousreply 1April 24, 2019 7:24 PM

Catwoman too.

by Anonymousreply 2April 24, 2019 7:28 PM

Exactly, OP. Wile E. Coyote was fun, snide and wildly creative. RR was a whooshing balloon with legs and an irritating honk.

I also kept wanting Sylvester to finally chomp down on that uber-grating, cloying Tweety Bird.

by Anonymousreply 3April 24, 2019 7:28 PM

[quote] I also kept wanting Sylvester to finally chomp down on that uber-grating, cloying Tweety Bird.

Agreed, R3.

by Anonymousreply 4April 24, 2019 7:29 PM

All the time. Voldemort could've killed that bitch Potter on multiple occasions, but he always talked too much and let him get away. Pissed me off.

by Anonymousreply 5April 24, 2019 7:30 PM

I have to agree Wile E. Coyote, I identified much more with him. that Road Runner was handed everything on a silver plate.

by Anonymousreply 6April 24, 2019 7:33 PM

I was rooting for the Demon Regan in The Exorcist.

by Anonymousreply 7April 24, 2019 7:35 PM

I always had the desire to see Elmer Fudd blast that smartass rabbit's face off.

by Anonymousreply 21April 24, 2019 8:17 PM

Mighty Mouse vs the cats. The cats didn't have names that I recall, but they were the villains. Not sure in what universe a mouse (vermin) is better than a cat?

I just wanted the cats to beat the snot out of that smug mouse once. Just once.

by Anonymousreply 22April 24, 2019 8:21 PM

Curly wasn’t a villain but I always wanted him to destroy Moe

by Anonymousreply 23April 24, 2019 8:23 PM

The whale in Moby Dick.

by Anonymousreply 24April 24, 2019 8:24 PM

There was a animated film that came out when i was a kid. It was called Chicken Run, and it was about chickens attempting to escape from a chicken farm and its harsh owners...

I wanted the chickens to fail, and remain on the farm.

by Anonymousreply 25April 24, 2019 8:25 PM

Second me on The Margaret Hamilton Wicked Witch of the West...and Angelique on Dark Shadows.

by Anonymousreply 26April 24, 2019 8:26 PM

R24 I think anybody who has seen the dreary Gregory Peck version wanted the whale to eat Capt Ahab.

by Anonymousreply 27April 24, 2019 8:30 PM

I hated Wiley and I hated Mighty Mouse.

by Anonymousreply 28April 24, 2019 8:31 PM

Angelique was my favorite on Dark Shadows. She could have done so much better than Barnabas.

by Anonymousreply 34April 24, 2019 9:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 35April 24, 2019 9:32 PM

J. R. and Alexis were my favorites. (Weren't they everyone's?)

I wish they could have a done a Dallas and Dynasty crossover. J. R. and Alexis trying to outdo each other while also fucking.

by Anonymousreply 36April 24, 2019 9:40 PM

The evil queen from Snow White

by Anonymousreply 55April 25, 2019 4:47 AM

I was just about to say the evil queen in Snow White. People should have known I was gay by the way I idolized her. She was so much more interesting and layered than Snow White. I always thought they should have really given Snow White more of a real personality and sense of humor to make a point about how beauty only lasts for so long and how having a personality is better.

Wouldn't you be pissed if you had to wake up every morning to some little bitch with a perfect complexion and who'd sing in that shrill soprano to birds as she was doing yard work? How could you not be on the evil queen's side?

The Empire in Star Wars.

Not just the cool ships and uniforms, the rebels seem a bunch of insufferable scruffy cunts, they have no discernible political philosophy or cause, and it's never explains quite why The Empire was/is the bad guy. The new SJW star wars turns this up to 11.

It relies on American nationalism and being a stand in for that Americans bizarre self righteous genesis myth story they teach their children, hence why the Empire all have English accents.

In pro-wrestling it’s generally a given that over half the audience will be rooting for the ‘heels’ I.e. antihero or villain character.

As a longtime viewer this holds true for me most of the time. It’s rare I ever support or want to watch a babyface i.e. heroic character work or promo over a heel.

by Anonymousreply 69May 27, 2019 10:46 AM

R53 The Punisher was pretty cool. But although he was the opponent I wouldn't classify him as a villain, since he had his own moral code and wouldn't kill an innocent.

by Anonymousreply 70May 27, 2019 10:54 AM

I used to loathe Derwood, the bad-tempered, insecure, controlling prick. But Endora was magnificent! I might suggest it for a float at Sydney's next Mardi Gras- "Rooting For Endora" .

And dressing up in Endora's chiffon and electric blue eye shadow is as good an excuse for a root as any.

The Evil Queen was always the best. I'd judge every adaptation of Snow White by how they portrayed the Evil Queen. If I could feel the creators judging her, I'd get super mad. Yes, I was a very weird child.

Here's my thing, though - if you want us to root for Snow White, give her a goddamn personality. We can't relate to little miss perfect. People can relate to a woman losing everything that made her special to some little twerp.

Then the two of them would escape to Switzerland leaving the children and Maria to their fate in the anschlus. The postwar period would be spent with the rich of Paris, London and Rome with occasional trips to New York and Buenos Aires.

I couldn't imagine anything more tedious than ending up in a ski lodge in Vermont.

by Anonymousreply 94May 28, 2019 5:01 AM

Sheriff Buck (American Gothic)

He was the most interesting character, & Gary Cole was (is?) a fucking hot daddy.

by Anonymousreply 95May 28, 2019 5:06 AM

I did as a kid. As a child I sort of felt like I was not a good person. Rooting for the villain was a manifestation of that.

But letting the villain win seemed most fair to me. The villain works so hard on his plans yet fate was always on the side of the good guy - who was often a self-righteous, bumbling idiot. The villain was the creative, hard-working underdog whom nobody liked, and in my childish mind I saw myself in him.

by Anonymousreply 109May 28, 2019 9:02 AM

Cersei in Game of Thrones. I didn’t like anything about her except that her character was always the most magnetic to me, and I couldn’t imagine the show without her. I am glad she lasted until the end and I don’t mind that she got a relatively sweet ending because she gave a good show.

Jon Snow on the other hand was all good and honor and I always dreaded having to follow his annoying story.

by Anonymousreply 110May 28, 2019 9:10 AM

A lot of us have read books about mountaineering other than "Into Thin Air". For instance, when I was younger, I read many books by climbers, including Tenzing Norgay's.

The most interesting was a used book about the first ascent of Annapurna, by Maurice Herzog. There was the usual stuff about the technical difficulties of the mountain and the climb... but it was the only book where the climber actually talked about feeling joy at summiting. Most climbers don't discuss their feelings in books, it's against their Guy Code or something, but Herzog reported that when he finally got to the summit alone he felt... the strangest feeling of absolute happiness. He said he stumbled off the peak in a daze of euphoria and it took him hours to realize that his gloves were gone and his hands were so badly frostbitten that he ended up losing most of his fingers. And that the great mountain hadn't brought him to a state of nirvana, that was hypoxia doing strange things to his brain.

And it was then I realized I NEVER wanted to climb the Himalayan summits!

Blanche is so smarmy ("That's charming, really charming." "How KIND people are! ") and stupid (all the business with the note to the neighbor-just call to her from the window, you dumb twat!) that I relish seeing her tormented.

And of course the fact that she tried to kill Jane..for imitating her at the party!

by Anonymousreply 119May 28, 2019 11:23 AM

I remember rooting for The Grand Mof in the first Star Wars, and have been a firm Royalist for the Empire in all subsequent films. I was upset that they made Lord Vader turn back to the Force, then killed him in ROTJ.

I was also rooting for The Dominion in Star Trek:Deep Space Nine.

by Anonymousreply 120May 28, 2019 12:41 PM

^^reading the Old Republic books of the Star Wars Extended Universe (yeah, I know) you really get a feel for why the Jedi Order imploded and collapsed as it did, and how the alternatives to supplant them as a ruling societal class other than the Empire weren’t much better. The Sith even start to make a lot of sense once you hit the ‘Knights’ books. I am a fan of Darth Plagueis and think he is almost heroic in his villainy. Then there’s the tragedy of Qui-Gon’s own version of Anakin, Xanatos...

I'll second the Evil Queen in Snow White. The poor woman only had her looks. I always feel sorry for people like that. They still exist today and, once they hit 40 or 50, they realize their looks are fading/gone and they have nothing to fall back on since they were always praised for their looks and never developed a personality.

I'd love to see someone try their hand at a modern, less fantastical Snow White. Just a jealous woman trying to kill off her younger competition.

Also, the "wicked" fairy in Sleeping Beauty. She had a right to be mad.

by Anonymousreply 125May 28, 2019 5:06 PM

I don't actually believe not being invited to somebody's baptism is quite reason enough to attempt to ruin their life. Just kill the thoughtless parents.

by Anonymousreply 126May 28, 2019 5:37 PM

R124 Only exception I can think of is The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Tuco is having a bath while the vengeful gunman starts his diatribe. Tuco shoots him with a hidden gun he had in the tub and stands over him saying “If you’re going to shoot, then shoot. Don’t talk.”

On several daytime soaps.

They usually wrote the hero/heroine as either so whiny and perfect or as someone who had everything bad that could possibly happen to them happen (repeatedly), so by the time they were on their eighth car accident or tenth abandonment by a spouse, you just hoped that some fabulous villain with an evil cackle would come along and finish them off!

I loved The Grinch (original cartoon version) just the way he was.

I always wanted to see what the world would be like if the Legion of Doom or any supervillain actually succeeded and took it over.

They didn't seem to have thought ahead for the details--how they would administer disputes , deal with emergencies, etc. All they seemingly wanted was to wear a crown and have the superheroes drive them by pulling a chariot, like Tamburlaine. (This was a favorite image for Jack Kirby to draw in 60s Marvel Comics.) I wanted to see how they would react to practical problems afterwards.

by Anonymousreply 146June 10, 2019 9:01 PM

R146 that is halfway the plot of VENTURE BROS. on Adult Swim. The protags are heroes, Dr. Venture and his two sons, but they are so incompetent and small-time that they are essentially the perpetual losers of the piece. Not that the more powerful villains who 'arch' them are much better at running global affairs; they're more organised (with guilds and unions!), better-funded and equipped and more skilled but they still can't hold power efficiently.

The shark in Jaws 2. Those snotty teenagers were insufferable. Especially the girl who kept on screaming.

Thomas and O'Brien in Downton Abbey. So over the top. Tripping a limping veteran. Always scheeming, even against each other.

Draco Malfoy.

The Misfits in Jem.

Colin Farrell as a fascist in Fantastic Beast. Yeah I worry about myself too. But he had so much style and charisma !

The original Grinch, yes. Whoville denizens are annoying.

Alex Delarge in Clockwork Orange. But then I suppose he is more of an antihero than a total villain.

For French speaking kids of the 80s : Eliza in the cartoon Candy. What a splendid bitch. Do you remeber when she condescended to lend Candy a gown, but it was too small on purpose ?

Diana (V) over Donovan, but not over Dr. Juliet. The series stupidly changed the main rivalry from Diana/Julie to Diana/Donovan when the 80's were built on female rivalries. Julie was badass and could not be converted by Diana. Donovan vs Diana was boring.

by Anonymousreply 163June 11, 2019 1:39 AM

The Aliens in Aliens. I had loved Alien. It was such an amazing poetic film. The bored, lazy, realistic characters. The deliberate slow pace. So rare to see a film that didn't pander to the audience. And then James Cameron made Aliens. Loud and trashy. And all the characters (except RIpley) were annoying, smarmy, gung ho assholes. Full off themselves and vile. I couldn't wait for the aliens to kill them all.

I think Pat Garrett had a legit grievance in turning on Billy the Kid, who became an egomaniacal sport-killer, in any movie. This goes double for GUNS II however, thanks to the handsome upright stoical William Peterson playing Garrett.

I also found Christian Slater’s portrayal of yellow-bellied racist creep ‘Arkansas’ Dave Rudabaugh somehow likeable in this movie, even though he is written and cast to type as a cockroach with no redeeming qualities.

Preppy bully Steff McKee (James Spader) in PRETTY IN PINK.

He loved Andie the longest and with the most realistic eye, and if you actually break it down he was the least creepy of her threee suitors about courting her; he didn’t stalk, guilt-trip, neg or ghost her and he gave her ample space respecting her choice. He also just really needed and wanted someone to love him for him and not just his money & status. He was too smart & sophisticated for that pit of a school, too.

by Anonymousreply 195June 17, 2019 3:55 PM

R185 yeah, exactly.

And Steff did neg Andie, calling her a bitch to her face and implying she was frigid later on. He also conspired to wreck her relationship with her boyfriend, and was possibly stalking her (he knew where she parked her car, where she worked etc.).

Andie was too good for any of those guys, with her standards and principles and creative ambition. Along with her deadbeat Dad all the men in her life were worthless. She should have moved in with Iona.

Morgana. Pissed me off that she started off basically doing exactly what Merlin was doing, using magic to fix things behind Arthur's back, but somehow it's evil for her to do it so he turns on her. By the time she went fully evil I was angry for her because it was basically Merlin and Arthur's fault. Mordred as well. Merlin had multiple chances to save the kid from the dark side buy instead he decided to be an asshole for no reason. I can't even remember if I watched the whole series because I hated Merlin and Arthur so much towards the end.

I watched The Originals first before going back and trying to watch The Vampire Diaries. lol, nope, couldn't get through it. I just wanted the Mikaelsons to kill them all. Except maybe Bonnie.

I haven't made it past season 2 of True Blood yet because I hate Sookie and Bill so damn much. I'm putting off continuing it because I want Eric to kill them but I know Sookie's gonna turn him into a loser in a season or two.

Squidward. and Mrs Puff. Fuck Spongebob, man. What an asshole.

Buffy and half the Scooby Gang are annoying as fuck. I'd much rather watch a prequel show about Spike, Dru, Angelus and Darla.

I liked Loki way more than Thor in the first Thor movie and was 100% on his side until he went a bit too far in trying to kill him near the end. He was totally right about Thor being a dickhead who shouldn't be king at the start though.

Not rooting for a villain per se, but I can't fucking stand Chloe in Lucifer. He has so much potential to be a cool character and then there's this insipid little human pest dragging him down. Him being in love with her is one of the most ridiculously badly written and chemistry-less relationships I've ever seen.

I hate the John Watson from the BBC Sherlock series. He's at least as much if not more of an asshole as Sherlock, while the narrative, other characters and majority of fans inexplicably treat him like a saint. On top of that he's incredibly boring and annoying, and I can't remotely buy Sherlock wanting anything to do with him. I spent the whole show gradually wishing more and more that Sherlock (and later Mary) would ditch his ungrateful ass and go team up with Moriarty.

R208 ah, Rita Repulsa. Loved that Queen.

It’s the same story with the villains in the original Japanese Sendai (on which the US Power Rangers are based). The campy bad guys are always more entertaining.

My favorites are Rio & Mele, the antagonists of the annoying Gekirangers (who became the US Wild Force PR team). Mele is like a DLr always talking obsessively about Rio and hot hot & beautiful he is I.e. “I once saw a man so beautiful I fought for his love as a WARRIOR”.
