"I am not a master fisherman but I know a bait when I see it. And I am not taking it" - Pete Buttigieg

by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 23, 2019 4:13 AM |

Oh dear, R2. You are going to have to do better, much better.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 23, 2019 4:23 AM |
It was a pleasure blocking R2.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 23, 2019 4:23 AM |
I kind of want to wait a few months and then binge watch all of Mayor Pete's interviews.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 23, 2019 4:25 AM |
Smart dude. Point Pete! But why, Andersen
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 23, 2019 4:26 AM |
^^^^^^^^
Anderson any day over the insufferable Chris Cuomo.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 23, 2019 4:30 AM |
Well, it’s a good development because the other candidates have been to easily falling in the foreigners traps. The right wing does it too.
Democrats need to stop letting divisive issues define them.
There needs to be a strong subtext of unity when answering these intentionally dicey issue prompts.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 23, 2019 4:33 AM |
R9 Yes, answer them, but not with an obviously practiced line. Be fucking authentic. It came off as craven and pandering.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 23, 2019 4:38 AM |
R10, I thought it came off as decisive and smart. It basically said, I'm not interested in bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 23, 2019 4:40 AM |
To what was that line in response?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 23, 2019 4:41 AM |
r12 did u even watch the video in the link @ OP ?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 23, 2019 4:42 AM |
r2 is probably correct this was a prepared line
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 23, 2019 4:44 AM |
I like Pete but he had that one saved and was just waiting to use that "clap back" (yes I hate that term too)
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 23, 2019 4:47 AM |
R14 Of course, and it sounded like it. I want to like Mayor Pete. He’s making it tough the more I learn. WAY too much Jesus for me. And, I’m not a Russian bot. Hillary supporter leaning towards Beto and Kamala.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 23, 2019 4:47 AM |
[quote] I like Pete but he had that one saved
They all have lines saved up and ready to fire. "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy."
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 23, 2019 4:50 AM |
There's nothing wrong with having prepared responses for certain types of questions.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 23, 2019 4:51 AM |
R12 is not paying attention, therefore does not deserve an answer.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 23, 2019 4:51 AM |
R16 He is not so much about Jesus as he is about scripture which is tolerable to many and has universal understanding.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 23, 2019 4:51 AM |
Who cares if it was a rehearsed line. If it was then good on him. Shows he’s a seasoned politician. The sentiment was genuine. I loved the face he made “I’m not the one to be messed with”. Bet republicans and many democrats are scrambling to find dirt on this guy lol
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 23, 2019 4:52 AM |
I actually thought the line was cheezy. I want to like him but he is so corny.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 23, 2019 4:53 AM |
He’s for taking care of the poor and needy, the original meaning of Christianity. Cannot understand why so many are so threatened by the slightest mention of religion that is the complete opposite of Trumpism.
On the other hand, Warren has spoken about her religious beliefs in much the same way, but it’s wonderful when she does it and horrible when he says pretty much the same exact thing.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 23, 2019 4:55 AM |
Great line.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 23, 2019 4:56 AM |
He just is such a dweeb and his husband is grating, the possibility of having a gay president is exciting but he just is so nerdy. I guess that's how some females felt about Hillary Clinton, they were excited about a female president but wish it could have been somebody else.

How tall is Buttigieg? He's shorter than Anderson.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 23, 2019 5:00 AM |
The comments in this thread are dumb. All politicians are over prepared and are coached in almost everything they do. Hillary Clinton was the most over coached candidate I have ever seen. If you can support the Hillary robot, then you can support Mayor Pete.

And his constant pandering about religion is massive turn off as well.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 23, 2019 6:18 AM |
Yes, many of Pete's lines are rehearsed but he also has a quick wit. When he appeared on Bill Maher's show he ran circles around him so don't underestimate him if he does go head-to-head (no pun intended) with Trump. He'll easily hold his own.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 23, 2019 6:31 AM |
And Trump won't be able to call him a faggot or a cocksucker like he wants to do

by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 23, 2019 6:37 AM |

To r60
Bill Clinton - single mother (father died before his birth), raised partly by grandparents who ran a small store, and an alcoholic stepfather. Received scholarships to attend college.
Barack Obama - was not a child of a wealthy family. He attended Punahou on scholarship from the 5th grade to high school graduation. Received scholarships to attend college.
Harry Truman - was a child of the middle class. (Farmers, etc.) Did not have funds to attend college. However, he was a successful businessman as an adult.
Nixon (may a pox be on his name) - also started life modestly. Eisenhower was from a solidly middle-class family.
Though they might have entered political life with the help of substantial donations, none of them started as wealthy men from wealthy families. (Some earlier Democratic Presidents were from wealth - Kennedy, Johnson, Roosevelt). Republicans since Nixon were born into wealthy families, (Bushes, Trump) or, in the case of Reagan, became wealthy fairly early in life.
There's no doubt that winning the presidency confers almost automatic wealth - book deals, board memberships, speaking deals, etc. I think that somehow presidential candidates get at least some of their campaign donations after the campaign is over, if there is any left over. (I think that should be illegal).

Yesterday morning Pete had to get up early and officially open a local holiday with a media event, signing some document and carrying out some ceremony. Then fly to New Hampshire and get ready for the Town Hall. He went on at 11pm last night. He had about an eighteen hour day yesterday. He was tired and it showed. Too bad it happened to be that exact same day and there was no getting out of either one.

I'm ready for those debates now.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | April 23, 2019 1:23 PM |
Love the line or hate it, spontaneous or rehearsed, that is the type of comment that wins votes.
Unfortunately most voters don't study the issues, or the candidates policies, they vote on how the candidate makes them feel. That is why Trump got so many votes, Trump didn't act like all the other politicians and voters wanted something different.
Many see Pete as something different, clearly there are people who don't like him but it isn't about the individual voter it is about winning over the masses. Pete appears to be doing that with some voting groups but he will need to find a way to appeal to older women and blacks if he is going to win.

by Anonymous | reply 94 | April 23, 2019 2:59 PM |
This is the first time I've seen a town hall debate and I've realised this format is just not for me as everyone keeps meandering and giving their life stories instead of answering the questions directly. Campaign talk exhausts me.
The rapid-fire debates can't come soon enough. We'll see who's all talk and who ready to do actual business then.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | April 23, 2019 3:11 PM |
I see your point about the format, but it serves as an introduction to the candidates.

[quote] I don't think a small town mayor should be jumping to the Presidency
Then who should be jumping into the presidency? Phony, corrupt billionaires with zero government experience, but passable ratings on a reality show? I'd like Pete, even if he weren't gay. Well educated, severed his country, happily married, kind of corny in that dad joke kind of way. He inspires people He's perfect for the job.
On another note, I really wish you Kamala people would help me understand what you see in her.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | April 23, 2019 3:18 PM |
^ Kamala (I'm assuming) has a vagina. Some people really want a woman to be president.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | April 23, 2019 3:24 PM |
Kamala is not extra ordinary, and that’s why it’s difficult to prove she has any advantage above the norm.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | April 23, 2019 3:26 PM |
I don't get it either. If anything, I find her obnoxious.
Her support also seems to benefit from a fear among white liberals that black voters will only be motivated if there is a black person on the ticket. I would counter that from my feelings by saying that for every person she "motivates", she will lose more than one voter who is turned off by her in places like Michigan, Wisconsin, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | April 23, 2019 3:28 PM |
I would love to vote for a woman to be president, but just don't throw me any woman. I was proud to vote for Hillary Clinton. That woman put in the work (maybe not so much in the Rust Belt) but I was honored to vote for her, because she was qualified and ready. I don't get that from Kamala at all. Maybe she needs to work on getting her story out there. For instance when Pete described his issues with being gay and coming out. He got me. I knew this guy and wanted to vote for him. Then I listened to everything else he had to say and I was all in.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | April 23, 2019 3:33 PM |

The Kamala voters seem to have a segment, not all but some, who want either a black person or a black woman, and they want to attack anybody else. They’re like Berniebros, burn anything in their path.
That’s a big turn off for me and makes me take her less seriously. If you’ve got the goods, people are enthusiastic about your issues, not angry that anyone else dares to run against you and get any traction.
If you look at her overall as a candidate and not a minority group, she’s kind of blah.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | April 23, 2019 3:47 PM |
Warren and Harris will be the final front-runners.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | April 23, 2019 3:49 PM |
Trump will win in 2020, sad to say.
Clearly the subgroups in our Dem coalition are going to destroy each other.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | April 23, 2019 3:50 PM |
I get so tired of people who lose their mind about "identity politics". Guess what sweet cheeks, all politics is identity politics. The republican party mantra "if it's straight, rich and white, then we're all right.
The strength of the democratic party is our diversity and inclusion. But in the primaries, I'm not just going to vote for someone because they check off a box. I will vote for Warren or Kamala if they are the nominees, but not in the primaries. They've done nothing to excite me and both seem kind of blah.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | April 23, 2019 3:56 PM |
So will I, R109, but all these fanatics with their “my way or the highway” worry me. It looks like half the big Democratic voter blocks are going to refuse to vote for anyone but their Precious, even if that person isn’t doing well and we lose.
It’s traditionally been the custom that everybody fights until the primaries are over, then we all vote for the nominee. That ended with Hillary and Bernie.
Now it looks like we’ve gone to the next stage, 20 candidates and at least 3-4 cult groups who won’t vote for any of the rest, guaranteeing Trump a win.
They seem to have completely lost sight of the goal of getting rid of Trump. Or maybe they never cared to begin with.

If you'll remember, this is exactly how the Republican primary played out last time, and it doesn't seem to have hurt them. (Ted Cruz wouldn't even endorse Trump at the convention! That's a lot worse than Bernie and Hillary.)
The process is only just starting, you can't make predictions now about what happens by the time of the convention.

I watched each of the town halls, personally I think Kamala would not answer some of the questions she kept talking about " having a conversation"...I am not a big Bernie fan but I thought he did well last night. Also not a huge fan of Warren but she has some very clear policy initiatives and how to pay for them, but she just does not seem to ignite a crowd. Mayor Pete did well overall and Klobuchar was at best ok. I am not presenting the matches below as what I want, because I want to see how the next 8 months play out, but I think Bernie & Warren would be a good ticket as they both have a lot of the same ideas and he is much more charismatic than her but she is the policy wonk. I also think Biden and Mayor Pete would be a good ticket mostly because of the strategy of Biden maybe taking back PA and Pete getting Indiana and the two of them cementing most ( not Ohio probably) of the mid west states...

R112, you are way behind the times. Remember, these are young people, they know how to use social media.
Everyone in South Bend knows these dogs by name. I saw a clip of an interview with the Buttigiegs (all four of them) last week. A well-known national news reporter called one of the dogs by name when he appeared. I think it was Buddy. The other one is Truman. Both rescues,

I've never heard of a "master fisherman."
I've heard of a master carpenter and a master gardener, but not a master fisherman.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | April 23, 2019 5:57 PM |
Biden/Obama would be a great ticket. But she won't play.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | April 23, 2019 5:59 PM |
R112, and what's so horrible about any of those things? He is what we need right now. Someone who is brilliant, articulate, compassionate and has a quick wit. Instead of a thuggish bully who has a vocabulary of 5 words, can't spell, puts babies in cages and likes to call people ugly nicknames and has temper tantrums like a toddler.

We need Pete and Chasten to adopt a cute but differently abled brown baby >WIN WIN
by Anonymous | reply 136 | April 23, 2019 6:06 PM |
I posted a while ago on a different thread that I thought Harris and Warren would eventually emerge as the front-runners.
I still feel the same way after watching last night’s town halls. Warren is very impressive and is the most qualified candidate. Harris has charisma and would easily trounce Trump in any debate and make him look like a fool.
Buttigieg and Klobuchar would be very strong VP candidates.
Harris and Klobuchar would also make excellent Attorneys General possibilities if they don’t make it to the final ticket.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | April 23, 2019 6:27 PM |
Anybody can beat Trump in a debate. Hillary wiped the floor with him. The voters proved they don't care about those things. I hate to sound like a dick, but some of you really need to get your head out of traditional politics. The voters have shown, they don't care about experience, tax returns, possible Russian involvement, decorum, the power to appoint qualified individuals for high level cabinet positions, whether or not he first lady was a whore and on and on and on.
It's a new day. All bets are off. There is nothing they can hit us with, that we can't hit back with a million times over.

[quote]Anybody can beat Trump in a debate. Hillary wiped the floor with him.
No she didn’t. Trump owned her with his “because you’d be in jail” remark. That’s all most people remember about those debates .

Can you all not see the irony?
Even when the Democrats have the most inclusive and diverse group of candidates EVER, it's the THREE WHITE MEN who are ahead in the polls. One hasn't even declared himself a candidate (yet).
by Anonymous | reply 142 | April 23, 2019 6:47 PM |
I agree R142. That means people say one thing, and vote another way.
Or possibly the amount of minorities that vote isn’t enough to push a candidate over, and they mainly act as spoilers stopping a particular candidate, but don’t have enough votes to make a candidate win.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | April 23, 2019 6:58 PM |
...or the other candidates suck and are just using their "diversity" to get votes.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | April 23, 2019 7:04 PM |
I hope you guys realize that Mayor Pete is a minority. If you include Bernie in this discussion, he is Jewish (a minority).

[quote] Trump can't work a crowd
If your definition of "work a crowd" = disregarding facts/truth and telling whatever blatant lies the audience desires to hear.
If your definition of "work a crowd" = spewing overt white supremacist rhetoric to white supremacists voters.
Then yes Trump is very talented at working a crowd.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | April 23, 2019 7:09 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 149 | April 23, 2019 7:15 PM |
R144, left that one out out of politeness. But that’s probably the real one.
People will vote for a cantaloupe if they like it. That’s another reason, and probably the main one. So they don’t like the failing candidates as well, evidently.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | April 23, 2019 7:17 PM |
I inherited a bankrupt DNC. Obama wasted all the money.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | April 23, 2019 7:18 PM |
Just like white women, gay white men are considered minorities. Mayor Pete is also a diversity candidate if we are being completely honest.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | April 23, 2019 7:29 PM |
R152 While technically true; I'm not sure that people really buy that.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | April 23, 2019 7:34 PM |
Mayor Pete is a man married to another man. He's a minority. Also, all of these comments from gay men about how America won't elect a gay president further illustrates that he is a minority.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | April 23, 2019 7:59 PM |
R162, the comments I read by people attacking him describe him as a “white man.” As in, white men are ineligible to run for the Presidency because it’s Kamala’s turn. I don’t see anyone else’s supporters that are so vehement.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | April 23, 2019 8:06 PM |

he needs to become a mass debator
by Anonymous | reply 157 | April 23, 2019 8:35 PM |
The fact that Pete has prepared lines, well thought out, for expected questions, means he’s smart enough to be prepared. It’s a qualification, not a disqualification.
Anybody who can’t do similar should be disqualified.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | April 23, 2019 8:52 PM |
Donald Trump might be the only politician who doesn't adequately prepare before speaking in public. Most, however, prepare a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | April 23, 2019 9:59 PM |
Smart and good, I say Warren and Pete. Rest are meh.
Biden's a fool. Bernie is nasty. Kamala is calculating. Cory is closeted. Kristen is mean. The rest I don't remember. And that's the problem with Beto: vague.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | April 23, 2019 10:48 PM |
Beto should have done a town hall with the others. It made him seem like the other were serious and he wasn’t. People would like to hear more details from him.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | April 23, 2019 10:54 PM |
I really like Pete - I am a little worried that Chasten is coming off too fem and that will be what makes it hard for some to vote for Pete that might otherwise be able to if looking at two masculine men together.

by Anonymous | reply 168 | April 23, 2019 11:32 PM |
Warren shot herself in the foot with that DNA test bullshit. And doing it right before the midterms pissed a lot of the establishment Dems off.
Also that reparations bs she’s bringing up will turn off white voters. It doesn’t poll well at all across ages and political affiliations. Any democrat going into the general with that as part of their campaign can kiss any hope of winning the presidency away.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | April 23, 2019 11:44 PM |
I don’t even want Warren as Senator anymore, with her stupid budget busting ideas.

The Dems will lose with reparations talk and transkids talk/policies
by Anonymous | reply 171 | April 23, 2019 11:56 PM |
This is what it boils down to:
Blacks: I want reparations. If you won’t give them to me, I won’t vote for you.
Everyone else in America: I hate reparations. If you give them to blacks I won’t vote for you.
Native Americans: If you’re going to be giving out reparations... *cough cough*
Blacks: I don’t care. Nobody deserves reparations except us.
Now what?

R171 the latest is Boston Bomber voting
by Anonymous | reply 173 | April 24, 2019 12:03 AM |
Yes, R173, definitely. Stupid! What a brilliant, winning position.
Reparations talk and transkids talk/policies and the Boston Bomber voting
Do they want to lose? Is it because they are rich and want Trump's tax cuts? Is it because they get Wall Street money and will do nothing about healthcare and widening economic inequality/misery/job loss etc.

by Anonymous | reply 175 | April 24, 2019 12:11 AM |
That’s a great talking point for Republicans, although last night outraged were attacking anyone that didn’t agree with St. Bernard.
I can even see that as a Republican attack ad:
“Democrats want the Boston Bomber to vote! (Film footage of one orange-jumpsuited infamous murderer and rapist after another). Do you want these votes cancelling yours out? Are these the people you want deciding your family’s future? Stop them! “
Bernie just walked right into it, but of course he doesn’t care.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | April 24, 2019 12:11 AM |
R175, there may be some white SJWs that want reparations, but when it comes down to it, I doubt they’re going to boycott the nominee over it. Maybe stay home or vote for Bernie, who probably won’t be the nominee again.
It’s really hard for me to take people seriously that have all these extremist views and think every single one of them is a deal breaker. “Free ice cream or I won’t vote! Free sammiches or I won’t vote! Open all the prison doors and let everyone out, I am against all prisons!” I actually read that last one today. These people are either Russian trolls or the stupidest people that ever existed.

I'm really dismayed at all the gay male vitriol directed at Warren.
She's gutsy, smart, and tough as nails. Petey's the next best thing to a born-again Xtian, Kamala slept her way up (Willie admits it!), Beto is pretty but vapid, Bernie's issues are best left unsaid, Biden is decrepit (but less so than Bernie), and nobody knows any of the other candidates.
It's a shame the way you guys hate women. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Warren:
Debt forgiveness for college debt
Wealth tax, on income already subject to income tax, to pay for affordable housing
Reparations
Instead, how about this:
Raise the inheritance tax from 0% to 5% on estates over $5 million. Index it so billionaires pay far more, maybe 70%.
Repeal the other Trump tax cuts.
Allocate a third to a half of that new government tax income to deficit reduction
Then allocate the remaining money towards tuition and housing help. But in neither case, should it be completely free. People need to contribute, when they get subsidies.

Tired of people who are hostile to all possible mentions of God or religion claiming “they’re all the same.” Are Jerry Falwell and Dr Martin Luther King Jr really just the same? Franklin Graham and Gandhi? Spoiler: NO.
If you’re not smart enough to realize that just because somebody believes in God, it doesn’t make them automatically evil, you have no powers of discernment. There’s a broad spectrum of people that believe in God and/or were raised in a religion of some kind. On one end is Hitler, the other end is Jesus. If you want to sit there and argue that Jesus and Hitler are of equal value, you’re an idiot.
That’s like the people who said they weren’t voting because “Hillary and Trump are exactly the same.” And they’re idiots too.
