by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 22, 2019 10:15 PM |
This thing is going to twist and turn some more. Mayor Pete's record on race is getting a closer look now-- it's the typical cycle, someone is built up as the Messiah and then he or she is torn down. We'll see if he can survive it. Beto just needs to hang in there.
I'm not totally sure Beto's voters overlap with Pete's all that much. Some, yes, but not totally. I'd like to see more analysis of that.
I also see that Beto is doing it really differently-- where Pete is doing a lot of national media to raise his name recognition, Beto is staying low-key, just going to tons of small voter meetups, knocking on doors, riding around in that van. And he's going to general election states like WI, MI, and VA, not just the first four early states. (VA is on Super Tuesday, so there's that, too.) Beto is playing a long game and he'll have the money to do it.
The dark horse is Elizabeth Warren. Slow and steady, and those policy proposals are the real deal. Pete and Beto don't have much like that yet.

After IA and NH, the race moves South and as Hilary demonstrated in 2016, whoever carries the Black vote in the South wins the nomination. The number of delegates is insurmountable. This is why reparations is rearing its ugly head.

It won't be easy for the Democrats to win Texas -- it's probably not going to happen for another two election cycles. Democrats need to improve their voter registration and infrastructure in Texas to a greater extent than exists now.
Hillary did have a good result in 2016 -- she only lost by 9 points, which was an improvement on Obama's 2012 performance.
2016 was the best margin the Dems had in Texas since Bill Clinton gave Bob Dole a good run in 1996.

by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 23, 2019 10:47 AM |
Perhaps, but again, in a field this crowded some early winnowing-out is going to be inevitable. Otherwise there's just too many candidates to maintain the interest of the press and the public. No one has the mental energy or desire to select among 20 candidates on a ballot. It may be unfortunate, and it may be unfair, but a little culling of the herd is going to be necessary.

He's not stupid, he's certainly sincere, but he has got to centre himself and let go some of the theatrics. He went on a one man likability strategy against Ted Cruz, who is awful, and it almost worked. But that's not enough for the big game.

R67, on the contrary, right now we are in the midst of the critical invisible primary. The news networks will decide which of the five million candidates are worthy of having on the stage, but who knows, they might have a kid's table debate with the more minor players. This will probably be determined by polling. It will be interesting to see which ones get invited to the earliest debates.
One wonders if Biden and Sanders will benefit from the Trump Effect -- when there are lots of candidates, whomever can grab the news media attention will suck all the oxygen away from everyone else. Trump did this by being outrageous. How will Bernie or Joe do the same?

I think Beto is considered to be a “centrist” because he’s a Democrat in Texas. Even people who don’t know anything about him would assume he has to be.

In fairness, Bernie didn't have a job until he was 40 y.o.

"According to The Washington Post, O’Rourke and his wife reported a total income of $370,412 in 2017, the most recent year for which they released a return. Plugging that figure into a Pew Research Center tax calculator means that the O’Rourke family is well within the top 10 percent of income earners in El Paso, Texas. There’s no reason to begrudge their wealth, particularly when it’s earned. Yet, the O’Rourkes reported only $1,166 of charitable giving that year — a total, the Post also notes, that constitutes “one-third of 1 percent” of the family’s income.
The O’Rourkes, apparently, are not among the more generous Americans; $1,166 is a surprisingly small sum for anyone of means, let alone a policymaker whose net worth was about $9 million in 2015, ranking him 51st out of 435 members in the House of Representatives in terms of wealth. And it’s appallingly small for a presidential candidate whose platform includes all sorts of progressive economic programming that would increase taxes on middle-class incomes, such as a $15 minimum wage and Medicare for All.
I’m not the only person who has noticed this disconnect. At a campaign event in Virginia on Tuesday, a student asked O’Rourke, [bold]“Why, as someone who earns seven times the amount of income as (her sister), a recent college graduate, does, (O’Rourke) gives less in charitable donations … ?”[/bold]
In reply, the former El Paso congressman pointed first to his public service, then hinted that he and his wife didn’t keep comprehensive records of many of their donations. [bold]But it wasn’t just bad accounting, O’Rourke continued. His generosity is exhibited by his gift of self. “I’m doing everything I can right now,” he said, “spending this time with you, not with our kiddos, not back home in El Paso, because I want to sacrifice everything to make sure that we meet this moment of truth with everything that we’ve got.”
The crux of his defense, it seems, is that his decision to run for president is his true charity.[/bold]

Mayor Pete has unseated him.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | April 27, 2019 4:52 PM |
Kind of pathetic. And the money he "earns" is family money. In-laws are filthy rich.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | April 27, 2019 5:00 PM |
Only 15% of people of 18-29 years of age came out to vote in 2018. Beto is doomed in Texas. Just sad.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | April 27, 2019 5:05 PM |
I'm retired, living on savings and Social Security until I tap my IRA in two or three years (or maybe five if new legislation passes). In 2018 I had an AGI of $14,400.
I didn't include them all because I don't have receipts for them all and I still deducted more in charitable contributions than did the O'Rourkes.
And I can't deduct the $100 I donated to his Senate race.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | April 27, 2019 5:09 PM |
I'm not sure how much Mayor Pete unseated him as Beto unseated himself. The guy comes across as arrogant in a clueless way. He's Trudeau the younger, maximum dose.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | April 27, 2019 5:12 PM |
Beto & wife are worth $9 million. In-Laws are worth $500 million -$1 billion based on estimates.
Beto insinuates gratifying his ego by running for President, while neglecting his kids, is a charitable contribution, so he doesn’t have to make actual charitable contributions.
Then says the solution to not enough good nutritional foods (presumably for the poor) is high end restaurants with fresh local foods.
Who are the people that like this guy?

He comes across as a complete airhead. I'm not surprised Mayor Pete (at least for now) mopped the floor with him.

Mayor Pete is much smarter and more authentic than Robert.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | April 27, 2019 5:20 PM |
R137 Totally agree And When asked how he would handle Trump, Mayor Pete said, “I grew up gay in Indiana, I know how to handle a bully.” And a gay guy can mop up a diva drama queen in the debates as well.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | April 27, 2019 5:46 PM |
He’s perfect as an empty suit. Beto is no more dumber ( far less so in fact ) than the current orange ignoramus.
And at least he’s not too old and senile like Biden or Sanders.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | April 27, 2019 5:48 PM |
This is no joke, but I had to check the news to confirm that Beto announced his candidacy in mid-March. I was out of the country so that may be why I missed it. All this time I had no idea because I've been focused on Mayor Pete's rise.
BTW, I've seen the full list of candidates, RepEric Swalwell wins the most fuckable award in my book.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | April 27, 2019 6:12 PM |
I laugh every time I see people on DL ask for a Pete/Beto ticket, or Beto/Pete. As if someone, as accomplished as Mayor Pete, should saddle the ticket with a trust fund hippie over worthy companions like Warren or Harris.
Pete seems to always be working or striving for the next challenge. Beto gives me Selina Meyer, fine for Senator but a disaster as a President or Veep.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | April 27, 2019 6:30 PM |
Agreed R140 Would also give mayor Pete silver And Beto bronze
by Anonymous | reply 142 | April 27, 2019 6:33 PM |
Reading that crap at R127 makes me actually hate him. Asshole. You know that right now he's googling to try to find out if it's definitely too late to challenge Cornyn. Fucking Dems messed this Texas chance up royally. Beto running for President and a stinking Castro brother running against Cornyn? Genius. Beto's ego at the bottom of it all.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | April 27, 2019 6:36 PM |
I agree, r143, also I can't wait for the Casto brothers to disappear.
I think this Mayor Pete sets himself apart from the others because he has a better education, runs a city (not that impressive though), is a gay man, and served in the military. Being gay is a big deal. Being a veteran is rare in the Democratic field (minus Biden). He really sets himself beyond the pack. What does Beto bring?
by Anonymous | reply 144 | April 27, 2019 6:42 PM |
Well said R144 And I’ll vote for the guy who ran a city, got re-elected with 80%, over the guy who bancrupted four companies and brags about not paying contractora for services rendered.

His campaign add shows him at some campaign rally sweaty as hell. Who are they trying to entice with that, as their first image?
I sweat at the first sign of heat, but I wouldn't that biological function plastered on the front page of my campaign website.

Oprah and Annie Leibovitz must feel like complete muppets right now. They thought they had fingers on the zeitgeist, jumping early on the wagon, but he’s turned out to be a complete waste of their times.

Keep in mind that Trudeau, whatever his flaws, is still a very successful politician.
Trudeau became the Prime Minister of Canada, so he has already achieved the top spot in Canada. He may or may not get reelected this year, but he's far ahead of Beto.

Another Washington Post reporter who was at that same event had a different take on the "farm to table" thing: "Beto gets a question about nutrition; he has a very handy series of answers based on conversations with people in food deserts, says farm bill should factor in nutrition more than it does."
by Anonymous | reply 154 | April 28, 2019 10:19 AM |
r154 great, so another reason for them to increase prices? Why not talk about the food that the gov purchases to waste or change the rules on the type of food that can be purchased through food stamps? HSA accounts have stipulations on the items that can be covered, so the technology is out there. Once that occurs food marts will follow this trend to ensure that they can maintain the WIC funds.
Finally, this is where Michelle's healthy lunch initiative could have been helpful. Children should only be fed healthy balanced meals. Parents or their kids don't like it, then they should find a job or the money to bring their own lunch. When you are eating off of the government or paying for a government meal, you get what you get.
Beto's answer was not fleshed out.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | April 28, 2019 1:39 PM |
WIC foods should be expanded to encourage more fruits and vegetables. Look in the signs in the market some time. It’s geared to benefit meat and dairy farmers, not to feed people properly.

WTF: I saw a sign in the window of a convenience store saying an 11" pizza for $7.99 was "WIC Eligible." I've got nothing against pizza (OK, maybe not a pizza from 7-11) but how is that healthy?

Isn't Beto's answer regarding charitable contributions similar to something Mitt! said when he was running? I'm going to try to find it.

by Anonymous | reply 163 | May 1, 2019 2:54 AM |
Beto’s advance people did no advertising for the event. Then they did it on a Friday night when students are going out. They interviewed students who were actually there on campus at the time, and they said there was no signage and they had no idea Beto was on campus.
His advance people must be terrible. But I do think Pete got a lot of the Beto momentum.
